A three-year starter at Boston College, Tennant started 41 consecutive games at center for the Eagles. A Rimington Trophy finalist this past season, Tennant had a strong performance at the Senior Bowl and showcased his athleticism and strength at the Scouting Combine by running a 5.16 in the 40 and benching 225 pounds 27 times. At 6-foot-5, 300 pounds, Tennant figures to be in the late second, early third round mix in this year’s draft.

Dangit John

I was just about to post this. Your just too good. I like this a lot. Personally, I thought we were going to bring in a guy like Tennant. I like him and he would bring a big sigh of relief to that position. The biggest news we might take from this is, if we are targeting Tennant in the 2nd/3rd then who are we really targeting in the 1st…hmmmm

BPA

Best player available. I’d be hard-pressed to come up with an area of this team that couldn’t use an upgrade if a player fell to the Broncos at #11…

I would like

to order the Eric Berry safety special with a side of Joe Haden Soup.

HA! No way Berry is there at our pick.

I believe...

That is exactly the way it is set up now. Taking the BPA is always a smart move and one that will most likely pay off in the long run. Which is the best way to go if not the only way. Thanks for the information John!

Might be a stupid question...

But is there any other centers than Tom Nalen from Boston College that have had succes in Denver? :)

by Jebbins on Mar 15, 2010 1:38 PM MDT up reply actions

John, I beleive the McD/GMX phrase is BPAPON

Best Player Available at Position of Need. I do not think they take Joe Haden because of Phonze or Eric Berry because of McBath.
IMO trade down if possible. If not then take OL/DL BPA.

by DLMyers on Mar 15, 2010 4:23 PM MDT up reply actions

You may be right there

Our O-line and ILB positions are the most urgent needs, now that we have shored up our D-line, improved the backup QB spot, and brought in some CB help.

Rolando McClain

Some teams will shy away because he has Crohn’s, but he would be a steal at #11.

by Hobnail_Boot on Mar 15, 2010 1:44 PM MDT up reply actions

And McX isn't shy in drafting someone high

as evidenced by the ‘09 draft. So despite his condition, with his skillset added to great intangibles such as a quiet off-field demeanor and obvious on-field leadership skills, I don’t see how the Broncos will pass on him easily – even at #11 overall.

With Andra Davis moving on, we need an ILB that can play 3 downs and be ready to play in week 1. The journeymen that we have in place can’t fill that role, unless Griesen does something surprising. Larsen’s better off blocking in the running game and helping out on special teams. Woodyard may or may not fill this role and even if he should start, I see him as depth and ST help at this point, so we have a glaring need at the ILB position.

Sean Weatherspoon may or may not be a good fit, especially since he’s and OLB. Brandon Spikes has a temper and so I doubt McX are high on him. Good alternatives may include guys like Koa Misi, Jamar Chaney, and Pat Angerer. I’d end my list right there, based on what I’ve heard and read about them.

But McClain clearly is the best LB coming out of the draft and hopefully, his health will never be an issue. I also love the fact that he played in the same system in college, so that has to be an advantage.

Interesting

I like when the Broncos take a Center from BC. That tends to work out well.

by Chibronx on Mar 15, 2010 12:56 PM MDT reply actions

I like Tennant more than Pouncey

altough, I like Dalton over Pouncey as well. Selecting Tennant in the 2nd or 3rd, if he lasts that long would be a big plus. Going for BPA at 11 just makes sense overall.

Me too

I really like Tennant. This is good news.

Broncos have had some pretty good past success with Boston College centers, too. :-)

If the bronco's like him..

they will take him in the second..

After last year i think we have all learn’t that they are not afraid of drafting who they like a little early.. cough Richard Quinn cough

Everybody's got an opinion on Tennant and Pouncey

Regardless, most, if not all, professional sports sites regard him as the 2nd highest rated center in the draft. I realize OC’s don’t go early often. I realize midlle offensive linemen are oftend taken in middle rounds. And I totally get the BPA idea and the “don’t reach” rule.

Whatevs.

Provided we have the same situation entering the draft as we do today, no way we wait until late 2nd/early 3rd to take a middle offensive lineman. Becuase if whoever that mid-round pick turns out to be doesn’t immediately start, then we’re likely looking at a no name guy like Fry starting along side a 4th rounder from last year with virtually no playing time.

I don’t doubt we’re looking at Tennant. But whether it’s him or not, we can’t wait until the third round to address our biggest need.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Mar 15, 2010 2:30 PM MDT reply actions

While

I do agree with you. Last year, our greatest need was the defensive line and I’m sure plenty of people said the same thing your saying. Look how last year turned out. I’m not dismissing your theory because like I said, I do agree with you. We need to address the Center position and early.

by Nick Cast on Mar 15, 2010 2:38 PM MDT up reply actions

The difference is that last year we at least had somebody to fill in

We took guys like Ronald Fields out of FA and had some added depth. We’ve got zero OC’s except for Dustin Fry, a guy who spent his two years in the NFL bouncing around from the Rams to the Browns to the Panthers to us. Could he work. Sure. Why not? Should we count on him, our only center, to immediately and competently start this year? Um, no.

Seth Olsen might start, might not. But the point is, we don’t just lack starters, we have a collosal lack of quality depth from right to left.

The whole idea of draft-and-develop, don’t draft for need, don’t count on rookies to start, don’t reach, don’t fart in church, etc… All of that goes out the window when you’re desperate. And while I’ll be the first to admit my faith in McDaniels and the FA moves of both this year and last, I’ll also be the first to admit we’re absolutely desperate. Offensive line was A weak link last year, it reamains virtually untouched, and it reamains THE weakest link.

Obviously future FA and/or trades could change this scenario between now and then, aside from that, we’ll need multiple offensive lineman in the draft, and we’ll need to get the first one within the first two rounds.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Mar 15, 2010 2:58 PM MDT up reply actions

Opps, three years

Fry was drafted in ’07, but has only played in four games, zero starts.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Mar 15, 2010 2:59 PM MDT up reply actions

elvislex, sorry to belabor the point -

when I posed the question in my post below about if Fry had played in a shotgun offense before, it was sort of as an afterthought. Sorry.

Do you remember the team and what offensive schemes that they ran? Might help us evaluate whether we need an upgrade over him for OC.
Thanks.

by Blackknigh on Mar 15, 2010 3:13 PM MDT up reply actions

I don't know much about him, but I listed his prior teams above

I sort of just see him as I have seen guys like Chris Baker and Marcus Thomas… prospects that you hope for but don’t plan around. But no, sorry, I can’t really help with details of systems he’s played in.

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

we aren’t desperate yet, Mawae is still out there

by black_knight101 on Mar 15, 2010 3:46 PM MDT up reply actions

Mawae is a small upgrade from Weigmann. They are about the same size. Infact I think Weigmann has a stronger upper body.
No to Mawae.

Just above the comments section and below the message is a listing of articles. One is by Tim Lynch: "Draftivus: Who should be Center?"

There is good info on Tennant, Cook from New Mexico and Eric Olson from ND.

The center handles the ball each play. If you want to run the shotgun, better have a center who has snapped in that scheme for awhile.

elvisalex, do you know if Fry worked in this kind of offense? He may not have if he played only 4 games. Thanks.

Just doing the undercenter snap would seriously hamper our offense – I think.

I am glad that they brought Tennant in. I hope that they look at a couple of others. I also like JD Walton…and Pouncey – but he will be gone in the 20’s of Rd #1.

If Harris is healthy, it makes our OL work easier. If not, our #11 pick may be for a Williams but not for Trent and not for Dan.

Thanks, John.

It appears that

McX may be looking at Ducasse and Tennant to draft. Does anyone think they are slated towards the 45th pick? Or would one of them make it to 80? (or wherever that selection is)

also word that we are working out J.D. Walton:

Not a bad thing

I was more excited about Walton than Tennant at first, but Walton comes from a primarily ZB system, so his background doesn’t make him an immediate fit. It would hold him back from being an immediate contributor, which is what the team needs going into 2010.

On the bright side, if he possesses enough potential to play man in our system, then great. He’s certainly young enough to add a new skillset, so in that case, more power to him.

Alex Mack

also came from a zoneblock system with the Golden Bears, but when you are as good as these guys, the pigeon hole just doesn’t fit. He was able to come in and contribute his rookie season, and Cleveland hasn’t looked back.

Mack 6’4" 311
Walton 6’3" 300

I think Walton has a great shot at contributing almost anywhere, and with his strength, leadership, and versatility (can play guard, just like Mack) I think he would make a particularly good Bronco…

Walton

If the Broncos select him, I’ll support it. That move would indicate to me that they see potential and hopefully someone that can start right away.

He did impress in the Senior Bowl, especially when he put Dan Williams on his back in practice. That has to count for something, right?

Does anyone have insight on Fry?
