Denver Broncos release QB Chris Simms

The Denver Broncos released QB Chris Simms today, one day after acquiring QB Brady Quinn in a trade with the Cleveland Browns.  Simms struggled in his opportunity to run the Broncos offense last season - in the 2nd half of a 27-17 loss to the Washington Redskins, and a 1st Quarter meltdown against the San Diego Chargers at home.

This is hardly a surprise.  The Broncos are allowing Simms to become available as early as possible so that he might find another team.  Chris Simms is truly one of the good guys, but you have to wonder if he'll ever get back to the form he had as the starting quarterback in Tampa.

Feel bad for him

he was a good guy, but the writing was on the wall. I never bought McD when he said Simms has a future with the team. He showed he doesn’t have it anymore. Too bad. Good luck to him in the future.

They have a future until….well they don’t

It's a rough business

but the lack of a quality backup QB last year probably cost the team a playoff berth. I think Simms just needs more time to regain his skills.

by rocko1 on Mar 15, 2010 1:37 PM MDT up reply actions

I agree.

Orton was playing his butt off when he went down against Washington. We should have won that game, and I like to think we would have with Orton in the whole game. And, I think we would have had a much better shot at beating SD a second time had Simms (and the D) not allowed us to get so far in the hole. Optimistically, We could have been 10-6 had Simms been able to play the backup role well.

sounds like you’re shifting blame to someone that had literally no impact on the fact that you paid a hefty premium on tickets.

There were a lot of disappointed fans at Mile High that day. By your logic every time the Broncos lose the fans should blame themselves instead of the players that the tickets directly pay their salary.

You’re blaming Simms for the SD loss, when he only played 3 series and the score was a manageable 13-0 when he was replaced?

Good luck finding another team

It will need to be one without video tape, scouts, or a medical staff. Or football personnel. Speaking of, any accountability for the Broncos on signing this stiff in the first place?

by Bob in Boulder on Mar 15, 2010 1:42 PM MDT reply actions

No, they can have those things...

… they just need to have only pre-2009 materials.

In Tampa, Simms actually looked like he was coming along as a decent, but not great, NFL starter. Then he had his horrible injury, lost a year, and never really recovered his timing, etc.

but I’m not surprised at all that he was brought in by Denver at the time… he was brought in as a backup to Jay Cutler… given the tape of him pre-2009, and even with an expected regression from the injury, that seemed like a decent bet.

you’re always so cranky Bob… try smiling once in awhile. It makes life much easier to get through.

I Agree

We need to restore class to being a fan of the Denver Broncos. There were many times last year that I wanted to call our young coach many names, but reason prevailed and I am usually an adult. Let’s not kick a former Bronco, especially when he is down.

On the other hand, if Phil Simms decides to be a super-critical announcer next year, then I will be the first to rip him apart.

I agree and I always try to be a Broncos fan with class. Nevertheless, I’m so glad Chris Simms is gone. In terms of playing on the football field, he’s about as close to worthless as you can get. He just didn’t have the physical stamina or skills to play pro football anymore. I would thing that would be a very tough thing to come to terms with. He did the best he could, given what he underwent, imo.

It's not love

it’s respect, guy. He wasn’t a great pro QB. He is what he is. But he still worked hard to pick the system up — he and Orton were constantly huddled and quizzing each other. I’ll respect the contribution, however small, thank you.

fair point about the physical stamina though

Guess I was reflecting on the rehabilitation from his injury and how it seemed to affect his game, both mentally and physically. When you’re out of the game that long, i can’t imagine it’s easy to get back in, especially if you weren’t much of a playmaker to begin with.

As for all of you that are making jokes at his expense, you should wish you had the courage to get back up after a life threatening situation and get as far as he did. It’s one thing to be excited about the future, but it’s quite another to be spiteful to Simms. Regardless of how he did or didn’t perform last year, he was a part of the Broncos family for a year. He should be treated with as much respect as he showed the city of Denver and Broncos fans everywhere.

And thanks for saying 'couldn't care less'

Everyone always says ‘could care less’, which is the complete opposite of what they’re trying to say.

Just bugs me. Sort of like Phil Simms. LOL

I'm in agreement

It also bothers me when people say, “I could care less” almost as much as I want to punch the air when people say, “a whole nother”

I Thought I'd Accentuate the Positives

brethren, so here goes. If it weren’t for Simms’ horrendous performance against the Redskins, we would have never known how valuable Kyle Orton is and can be to this team. Always look for the silver lining.

now that you mention it..

I am SO glad we melted down and got embarrassed in front of the whole country. That was a valuable loss.

Lol jk. But really, we didn’t need PROOF that orton was better than simms. Pretty sure we all knew that from the beginning

This

is true. The Orton haters were quiet for at least 24 hours.

Not John Clayton!!!

But I digress

The QB position is set.

Clayton deserves our sympathy

because he reminds us of a love child of Carol Channing and Al Davis.

I may need therapy after picturing that.

We signed him for like 3 million, right?

How much money are the Broncos on the hook for Simms after releasing him? ANyone know about the financial end of it?

Now we have solid backup QB depth in BQ

ORTON IS AND SHOULD BE THE STARTER. I DON’T WANT TO HEAR DIFFERENTLY.

by skithebert on Mar 15, 2010 6:30 PM MDT reply actions

but if Quinn wins the starting job, would you trust McD’s decision? that’s what’s important
as of now, I agree that Orton is the starter

I wish him all the best

His career was hit hard with that ruptured spleen and I really hope he gets back to where he was with the Bucs.

Never been a Simms fan

But I respect his toughness and strength trying to come back after such a major injury. I wish him well in his future efforts.

by DCJ on Mar 15, 2010 7:35 PM MDT reply actions

Finally

I honestly cant remember a worse performing backup in decades. Though he played less than 4 quarters in regular games this year, he was terrible in those performances. Brandenstater would have been better as the #2 QB, but I suppose the Coaching Staff had to play Simms to justify the investment. Partially thats a true statement, but he never was intended to be a Starter when the team picked him up. When I heard about the news of Quinn, my first thought was “Good, we get rid of Simms”, and thats a true statement too.
