"Profile"! Don't Profile Me Ya' Bum! Brady Quinn
We Bronco fans often sit back and dream of that special player on our team who can make the difference between going to the big party or just going home empty handed. what fair minded young man doesn't think about things like that? I know I do, and those chances for team glory don't just hang around on trees, they are born. Seeing that they aren't born every day, I guess we'll have to dream a little more...
Brayden Tyler "Brady"/"Brady Bunch" Quinn came riding into town yesterday afternoon with the same dreams in the back of his mind. Brady was born in Columbus, Ohio on October 27, 1984 and went to Dublin Coffman High School in Dublin, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus. Sound familiar? Sure it does, he's another Ohio product known for it's ability to produce football players. While at Dublin Coffman Brady's football team ranked sixth on the Detroit Free Press "Best of the Midwest" team and was listed at number 20 on ESPN's list of the nation's top 100 players as a preparatory student.Quinn threw for 2,200 yards and 21 touchdowns, posting a 9-4 record with which Coffman reached the Division I state finals in 2001 as a junior. In his senior year of 2002, he threw for 2,149 yards and 35 touchdowns with only four interceptions while also rushing for 108 yards and six touchdowns.
The Dublin Coffman "Shamrocks" quarterbacked by Quinn played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Texas. Brady was named the Columbus Dispatch and Ohio Capital Conference Offensive Player of the Year and was an All-State choice. Besides playing football Brady was also named an All-Conference player in baseball as a junior and lettered three times. He was also a member of Young Life, the Rock Solid Club and Who's Who Among America High School Students.
Recruitment to Brady came by way of mouth and in the fall of 2002, then-Notre Dame head coach Tyrone Willingham offered Quinn a scholarship, acting on a tip from fellow recruit Chinedum Ndukwe's father.
Brady Quinn's college days~
Brady Quinn's career took off under the tutelage of Coach Willingham at the University of Notre Dame and ended up under Head Coach Charlie Weis (now Offensive Coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs) where he broke nearly ever quarterback record in the schools history.
During the 2005 College Football season, Quinn completed 292 of 450 pass attempts for 3,919 yards and 32 touchdowns statistically making him one of the year's top performing QBs in NCAA Div. I-A college football. He finished the season 5th in total offense, 7th in pass efficiency, 7th in points responsible for, 6th in passing, 3rd in total passing yards, and 3rd in passing yards per game
During that year Notre Dame's Fighting Irish finished ranked 4th passing in the nation. Charlie Weis has been credited with the development of Quinn and his breaking 36 school records. There were ten career records, twelve single-season records, four single-game records and ten miscellaneous records broken by Quinn throughout those four years, including the record for career pass attempts with 1,602, completions with 929, yards-per-game with 239.6, touchdown passes with 95, and the Irish's lowest interception percentage with 2.43. Quinn won 29 games as a starter at Notre Dame, tied with Ron Powlus and Tom Clementsfor the most in school history. On the downside, his 17 losses are the most in school history, one more than Powlus' 16 losses, and are markedly more than Clements' 5 losses. Quinn ranks in the top ten in NCAA Division I history in career pass attempts (ranked seventh), passing yards (ranked tenth) and touchdown passes (ranked ninth).
Most people think about Brady Quinn as a competitor. He has always been determined and willing to give his all. His parents in Dublin, Ohio, Robin and Ty, raised him to be focused and to strive for all of his goals. “My parents have made the biggest influence on my life. I hate to admit it, but each day I will catch myself doing something just like them.”
Walking around campus you would never know how fierce a competitor he is, known for being the gentleman at school and off he offers this exclamation for it;
Quinn is also a strong Christian. “God has made a huge impact on my life and helped me through so many struggles,” he said of a topic to which he continually returned. In three words he describes himself as “a good Christian.” He continued by saying, “I try to live a good Christian life as much as possible. Christianity helps with the leadership roll that I believe quarterbacks need.”
Being strong spiritually isn't his only trait he holds, he is 6'4" (1.93 meters) tall and weighs in at 231 pounds (105 kilograms). Brady's football ability is helped by the fact that in addition to his athleticism, he is quite strong. He can bench press 350 pounds (160 kg), squat 475 pounds (215 kg) and also holds a Black Belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
While attending Notre Dame he majored in finances and political science and is described as a quiet, gentlemanly individual who would ultimately like to be an attorney. He was employed part-time by a Columbus, Ohio law office during the summer of 2005. Brady received pressure as soon as he arrived at Notre dame on field and off the field as it is already hard to hold up the prestigious Fighting Irish tradition. Going to Notre Dame has made him focus on studying and doing homework just like any other student at the university. In the future, after graduation, Quinn aspires to go to law school and become the attorney he has always dreamed of being.

At the end of his college career, Brady anxiously anticipated the draft where some had projected him being taken in the top 10. he was even being labeled as "The Franchise Quarterback" with comparison in the mold of Carson Palmer. Then the Combines came around and Brady would be there..But nursing a knee injury sustained during the Sugar Bowl, Quinn bypassed the drills and just held interviews..For much of his senior season, Quinn was considered a lock to be the No. 1 pick in the 2007 draft, but his prospects have been downgraded since he threw his last pass in a losing effort against Louisiana State in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 3. Mel Kiper of Espn had this to say;
“Quinn is not the talk of the draft,” Mel Kiper Jr., the ESPN draft expert, said this week in a teleconference. “In fact, he’s lost momentum, so if he goes ninth, I think he should be happy.”
We've all seen what one game can do for an athlete's career. I mean we have afour-year starter at Notre Dame, where he threw for 11,762 yards and 95 touchdowns, what more could you ask for out of a guy? One glaring reason why Brady Quinn's draft status suddenly dropped off may have been the result of skipping out on going to the Senior Bowl. Rather choosing to let his ailing knee recover on the advise of noted orthopedic surgeon James Andrews.
Quinn did hold a private workout in March before the draft though and here are his results from that;
| Name | Position | Height | Weight | 40 Time | Misc. Notes |
| Brady Quinn | QB | 6-3 | 232 | 4.73 | Actually a tenth faster in his 40 than JaMarcus Russell, which seems a bit odd. Notched a 36-inch vertical and a 9-foot-7 broad jump. Ran the short shuttle in 4.22 and the 3-cone drill in 6.79. Looked great in all the drills. Should be back in the top 5, if not the top 3. |
| Derek Landri | DT | 6-2 | 288 | 5.00 | Benched 225 lbs. 26 times. Had a 32-inch vertical. |
Come draft day Brady Quinn was in attendance and was really thinking he would drop from the number 1 spot down to the 3rd pick, where he figured the Cleveland Browns would take him...“I think economically that would be a good situation right now with them drafting in the third spot.” Quinn said. “But I’m not biased toward any team. Whatever team I go to play for, I’m going to be happy to play for.”
The Oakland Raiders had the first pick of that draft and with all eyes on Quinn, the tRaiders picked JaMarcus Russell, the tall quarterback out of LSU. Brady's heart began to pound just a little harder...Next up was the Detroit Lions and they selected Calvin Johnson the WR out of Georgia Tech. OK...[hands wringing together, beads of sweat starting to appear on forehead], the Browns are up now! Then came the announcement, The Cleveland Browns with the 3rd pick select...Joe Thomas OT Wisconsin...Brady's eyes lit up and he almost rose to his feet only to realize that it wasn't his name being called! Pained, sitting through pick after pick and growing more and more like he maybe should have stayed in bed on this day...Then, at the 22nd pick the Cleveland Browns selected him. His walk to the podium would cause some to question his motives...especially a fellow alumnus Joe Theismann;
Following the draft, Quinn was criticized by Joe Theismann in a radio interview, claiming that Quinn looked "unprofessional" when he was on stage following his name being called. Theismann was bothered by the appearance of Quinn's hair and the fact that he was chewing gum. Quinn responded by saying that he apologizes to "anyone, obviously, who is a Notre Dame alum, or for those fans who thought I wasn't being very business like," saying that he was there for a long time and that the last thing that he thought of after his name was called was whether he was chewing gum or straightening his tie. "I was just trying to get on stage as fast as possible and get that Browns jersey in my hand," Quinn said.
Sure the kid was disappointed and maybe rightly so, but after all it is the Cleveland Browns were talking about. I have wondered if the Brown didn't already promise him that they would take him at #3? Just a thought, and as a result of it Quinn would do a little holding out himself...
After an initial holdout, Quinn signed a five-year deal with the Browns worth a reported $20.2 million, with $7.5 million guaranteed and up to $30 million in incentives. However, his 10-day absence from training camp all but ensured he would not win the Browns' starting job during his rookie season.
For what it's worth I won't indulge in his 3 year stint in Cleveland, not because I don't think it's worth mentioning, it's just that I have as much respect for that organization that I do for the tRaiders. Brady Quinn's a Bronco now and I'll treat him the respect I treat all Bronco players...Until they show me different. So, what we have here is a well chiseled model figure of an athlete ready to prove his worth in Blue and Orange. The "Brady Bunch" as he was referred to in college has all of the tools necessary to make a fine quarterback in the NFL and if one coach could help him achieve his goals, it would be Coach McDaniels.
Brady Quinn will be our starting quarterback of the future...At least Adam Schefter seems to think so...And if he is, will we call him..."The Mighty Quinn"? I'll leave that up to you! #10 LIVES!!!

My honest opinion of this young man raised a couple of notches after doing this reseach.
Listening on the radio today Adam Schefter did say he thinks Brady Quinn could one day carry the load of the Denver offense…I hold that opinion now as well…Thanks guys for all of the support you give to MHR and your comment or arguments are welcome…Don’t forget to sign up for Mock Sunday brought to you by MHR’s own ejruiz.
If Quinn ever wins the starting QB position, it will not end well.
Just sayin’… I don’t think he will ever be worth snot in this league. I know some of you are thinking, “how could I bad talk our precious Broncos?” I am hear to say , you don’t have to drink the cool-aid, and if you do and don’t like the taste, you can spit it out. There is not anything wrong with not going along with everything McX does. It is good to have a free mind and think for yourself.
I excpect nothing less than a Superbowl championship from McX within 3 years or get the h—- out of town. I want wins! I don’t care who likes you in the locker room, win the division, win a playoff game, then win the Superbowl. From where I am sitting, it McX looks like a 16 year old that has been given the keys to the Ferrari. I don’t like the moves he has been making. Never trade talent and heart for good looks. Good looks doesn’t win games.
Ferrari
With all due respect. McX was handed the keys to a Chevy Chevette. With last years changes, this years off season, and depending on how we fair in the draft. We might be upgraded to a Vette. But Ferrari? Good looks do not win games, your right! But either would Simms EVER!

Hold up hoss! I'm just portraying the man, not promoting him...LOL
I like to profile players to see where they come from in terms of attitude, character, athleticism, intelligence and football skills. To me Brady Quinn carries all of those attributes and some, but saying he will ever be something we will crown and put on a pedestal like John Elway would be laughable. Not knowing has some curiousity involved in it, at least for me. To be honest, I never dreamed that McDaniels had his eye on him. Taking 11 long years of Shanahan was an enduring feat for all of us and I like you never want to go through that again. 13-3 Baby!!! Until wwe ain’t!

A comment like that from you two makes me proud and honored...Thanks a milliion guys.
I wanted to show everyone the man behind the model body. I am not falling all over him and it’s a wait and see for me, but he seems to be an upgrade from Simms. I still have the same outlook for Orton, vut he did impress me more than once last year.
And it is well deserved...Great job Bill

This may be old news, but over on Adam Schefter's Twitter Andra Davis has a visit to the Bills Monday and Tuesday.
I hope he gets on somewhere.
I'm still on the Rolando McClain band wagon if we stand pat at #11
He would be an immediate upgrade at the insde position with the skills to make an impact.

Nice Profile

Great work in this Quinn profile bfree,
lots of things I knew and lots that I didn’t. I don’t believe his play in Cleveland is a good example of what he might be capable of. Certainly has developed some bad habits from there that will need to be changed. So I’m in a wait ans see mode. Kyle is our starting QB until he’s not and I’m good with that for now. I do want to see a better offense this year that’s for certain, but, that includes better play calling and overall play by all the offense not just the QB. I do think Quinn will start a couple of games this year, seems Orton has a knack for getting hurt at some point during the season, but, again that’s just my opinion.

I learn alot from doing them KB and thanks for the comment. I really got excited about, but didn’t elaborate to much on, was his black belt in Jiu-Jitzui. I have piddled with the grappling hold submission self defense and find it very affective without all of the blood from punches…LOL
You aren't the only one who has learned a lot from them.
I really enjoyed Tales from the SunnySide and I really enjoy Profile! Don’t Profile Me Ya Bum!
The Jiu-Jitzui excites me. Maybe we can see him rear naked choke Shawn Merriman or sweep the leg or something like that. That would put a huge smile on my face. lol

Thanks bchiper and that's me too (wait and see)..
I believe his career was muddled by the lack of talent in Cleveland and poor coaching. They have made a right move by acquiring Mike Holgren and he has done pretty much what Shanny is doing in Washington and what McDaniels did here last year and that’s dismantle a bad wheel and change it. Now Quinn get his chance to make something of his life and career…A fresh start, so to speak.
Rubin Mehenti of channel 2 news is confirming what I stated from my own observations of Cleveland...
To me, the jury is still out on whether Brady Quinn will ever become worthy of his first round draft status. He is just 3-9 in 12 career starts. Though, that, in my estimation, is far too small a sample size to have an accurate gauge of his ability at the professional level. Playing for one of the NFL’s worst teams further clouds his true skills. However, I do believe that this was a good move for Josh McDaniels.
They are the tRaiders of the AFCNorth!
shocked
I am absolutely shocked that 80% believe Brady Quinn will be our starter within 2 to 3 years. people actually think he is better than KO? I don’t see that AT ALL right now, and I don’t think there is any reason to think Quinn has an upside greater than that of TB or anyone else we might draft in the next couple years. I can’t believe that failure in Cleveland was entirely due to the Brown’s overall lack of a good program…Stafford looked a whole lot better last year than Quinn ever did with an even worse program. People thought Quinn had potential coming out of college? Same with Jamarcus. Quinn isn’t accurate on the short passes that this system uses. For all his other deficiencies, KO is.
First of all this post is a 'profile' of the player not a sudden urge on my part to hand him the keys to Dove Valley...
And I say this without hesitation or malace, Brady Quinn in a Cleveland Brown offense was destined for doom from the moment they called his name at #22. The Browns organization (was until now anyway) had very little to offer Quinn in terms of helping him develop to his strengths and potential. Please understand that that may change with the regime change, but that’s a wait and see drama that I won’t hold my breath for. They have destroyed any quarterback to show up over there since Bernie Kosar and for the life of me I can’t judge Brady Quinn’s inadequacies on his talents. Now that he will be given true quarterback instructions he has a chance to prove the naysayers wrong. Will he do that? Only time will tell and after all he is still young enough to get to the point we and the team want him to. One last thing and I hope it might settle any indifferences people against him and that is, the talent level he had to throw to in Cleveland was ridiculously subpar for anyone to be successful. I sincerely hope Kyle Orton puts everybody to rest with who they think should be the starter and that could happen this season. Thanks for joining in MountainBronco.
great points, big sky bro
I can’t compare Quinn to Stafford, who was easily a #1 pick. But I will say that his upside is better than TB’s due mainly to his vast experience in the system. Did it help him as a Brown? Not much. Will the accuracy thing be for real once he gets coached up in Denver? Too early to say. He struggled early last year, but he came on strong toward the end of the season and his collegiate stats should not leave us bereft of hope.
Don’t see him beating out KO anytime soon. But all you want in a backup QB is a guy who can put together four games during the season when your first stringer goes down. In the right situation, I think BQ is entirely capable of that. (imo)

I agree with you bm.
We’ve learned from McDaniels’ brief history that he love a competive spirit and made the right decision by naming Kyle the starting quarterback last year. He didn’t fool around with it, he made quite clear who the man was and I like that in a coach. Over at Cleveland the head coach Mancini let the players basically decide who was going to start. Kind of makes you wonder who was really in charge over there, the coach or the players. When it get’s down to throwing a dart at a picture on the wall to see who plays or not is a pretty sad organization. Here in Denver we have a coach that won’t put up with whining and carrying on, which is a plus and he stops anyone from thinking there might be a quarterback controversy (especially the MSM) so the players can concentrate on their work. Man, I like this McDaniels. Don’t you?

I’ve been totally bummed out since the news of Hillis and two picks for Quinn, someone I’ve never liked in any way. But life moves on, and I’ll try to adjust to reality. Your profile will help. But as an anti-Quinn person, I have to wonder at this comment by him – why would he hate to admit that he does things like his parents? Sounds assinine. Okay, I’ll stop now.

I think what he meant to say was, the influence on his life is due to their way of raising him as a child.
At least thats what I get out of it, just like my attitude and work ethic is due to my parent’s influences on me. With little money to spend and the humble surrounding I grew up in make me thankful for what I have. The way I see it, if Brady Quinn somehow becomes our starting quarterback (and that would be saying something imo) I’ll stand behind him 100%…At least while he wears Blue&Orange. Thanks Bradley and here’s to the future of our beloved team…
Sure that's what he meant
But why does he hate to admit it? Seems like a lame thing to say. Okay, I’ll really really stop stop now now. I mean it. (Must duct tape hand!)
Thanks again, bfree, for a real good article.

My favorite western.
Bet you couldn’t get even a child actor to do that final scene nowadays- they would tone it down like the girl at the end of Pale Rider yelling “Preacher”…rip off if I ever saw one.
Ha Ha yeah ain't that the truth...
Watching Open Range last night for umteenth time I was thinking…Why don’t they make more westerns…I get pretty tired of watching the Virginian and Gun Smoke every day…HEH!!!
Appaloosa which came out in the past few years wasn't bad
I hear you on the Westerns Bfree, their timeless message has been neglected as of late. Stories of independence and self-reliance…. I look around and I see a lot of people who aren’t hearing that message.

Well, thank you doc and that is a compliment I hold high...
I’ve been working on a Justin Bannan profile as well. Hope to have it ready in a day or so..
A very nice profile bfree2bronc.
I haven’t been real enthusiastic about Quinn, but I’ll reserve judgment until I see what a coach with real attention to detail can do for him. If anyone can teach him the nuances of the pro game it’s McD. He has very good lateral movement and quickness which is one advantage over Orton that may make a difference in the long run. Maybe the Cleveland experience is just something he needs to separate from to blossom.

Good stuff, bfree - way thorough
I remember that draft day very clearly, down to the Theismann chewing gum thing. I tend to agree with this post from Deadspin, entitled Bad Sign for Brady Quinn: He’s Taking Joe Theismann Seriously:
Brady Quinn’s dreams had just been peed on for 4½ straight hours before finding out he was going to be spending his career in the high-fashion mecca of Cleveland … I thought we could all forgive him if he looked a bit disheveled. Joe Theismann could not.
…
Anyway, Brady Quinn took it to heart … and cut his hair before showing up to Browns minicamp. I personally don’t feel like the length of his hair will be much of a deciding factor in how good he turns out to be. Listening to Joe Theismann, though … that can’t be a positive indicator.
Can’t argue with that. ; )

Great find bm and thank you..
I don’t really know what it was that turned teams off to him unless it was skipping the Senior Bowl. It’s kind of funny how that happens and how the MSM can make you or break you, in his case it looks like they succeeded. The same thing may happen to Jimmy Clausen and Sam Bradford too. Not so much for Bradford I don’t believe, but the pressure is on Clausen. And what bothers me about the Brady situation is that they all have lots of film on him and others. So what is it that really holds them down? I wish I had the answer to that question. Heck Clausen may fall in our laps and it will be interesting to see how McD handles it. merely for the amusement of it if nothing else.
by bfree2bronc on Mar 16, 2010 10:42 PM MDT up reply actions
had the same thought
I have a hard time seeing McD passing on Clausen, but our OL really needs more attention in my mind.

Yeah and that's the beauty of the draft...Not knowing until it happens.
I put my trust in McDaniels to make sound decisions and select the best player to help the team be a champion. I’m not a person who blasts authority with every move made, I’ll let them hang themselves like Shanny did. But your right, I think McDaniels would have a hard time letting him go by.
Nice article bfree
Articles like this always help us identify more with the Broncos which is what fans do.
Doesn’t mean, like you say, that you’re trying to judge their chances of success.
Since IMO QB success in this system (if not everywhere) is based more on the ability to make quick reads and quick decisions under pressure, I think we’ll have to see who climbs to the top.
Orton has improved and with a better OL should be more effective in the longer throws if the pocket doesn’t collapse so far and if the running game is a more effective deterrent.
TO has some skills and is said to be smart (finished a masters in his five years at college). IQ smart doesn’t always mean the “quick smart” or “speed intelligence” required in the NFL (McD’s “smart” player). I personally like his chances to rise to the top.
Quinn is an unknown in my mind. Is mobile, but that’s not apparently essential (i.e. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning). Increased pocket mobility can be learned to some extent (again both Brady and Manning).
Finally, with the increased number of injuries at all positions, I think having three pretty reliable QBs might prove to be a good idea.
by ivanthenotsobad on Mar 17, 2010 2:37 PM MDT reply actions
Thank you ivan and I appreciate your response
Not sure who you are referring to with"TO", but my suspicions lead me to believe you aren’t talking about Terrell Owens. But, if we are comparing Tom Brandstater to either Brady Quinn or Kyle Orton, then I would have to say Tom is (maybe not light years away) nowhere near either one of the fore mentioned league as far as competitive levels. Tom, and I say this with respect, needs a lot more development before he can be declared anything other than a 3rd string quarterback at this time. Since we don’t have an opportunity to tell how Brandstater is coming along in his development, we have to assume that he, for one is still on the roster and two, he is developing slowly in McD’s playbook system and scheme. Which is good in my opinion, because unlike Shanahan’s theory of throwing them to the wolves (Cutler), McD see’s fit to bring him along slow and methodical where he can get every ounce of production out of him. I am glad of that and hope somewhere down the line of development that Tom will be our starter in the future, because afterall that’s what he was drafted for wasn’t it? And with the injuries a team has to juggle around, we might have 3 qualified quarterbacks able and ready to step in and take over. McD is a genius in my honest opnion…

Bill...Well said regarding TommyB.
I agree with this (almost) exactly…I am thinking (hoping) that McD will spend some additional quality time w/ TB this off-season and pre-season…McD will want to know how TB responds to the chance for increased responsibility and the opportunity to show if his development will justify a continuance of McD’s investment of time and effort…I am of the opinion that Tom will respond well to the challenge and I am looking forward to watch it…As you would say, “time will tell!”

The trade for Quinn is a reflection of his forte
and love for the quarterback position. Any head coach with any salt would want an above average to great quarterback with two near equal backups in emergency situations. This move on McD’s part just shows us his desire to win on all fronts and his knowledge of what it takes to get there. That’s what I admire of Coach McDaniels.
