Sending Them Off the Right Way

The offseason is in full swing and so is the axe. Guys are getting cut, traded, signed, tagged, tendered, yada yada yada.

So, how are we, as fans, supposed to react? I'm not a dictator, so I can't enforce a reaction from you. If you don't react the way that I want, I can't come after you with intense military force and bring a swift end to your life or anything like that.

So, what is this post about? Well, over the last few days, there have been a plethora of different reactions after hearing of player transactions. When Chris Simms was cut, he was called a piece of trash, a particular piece of excrement, and so on. When Hillis was traded for Brady Quinn, some were excited about it and others hated it. Obviously, these varying responses are opinions, which are unique to each person.

However, as we get ready to jump to the meat of this post, let's keep in mind that respect should be at the heart of every opinion, with very few exceptions.

Star-divide

This morning, there was a post that embodied the heart of this topic. It was deleted because the post came across as a bit antagonistic, but there was a ton of passion in the poster's words. I quite enjoyed the post, not for the tone, but for the passion. One particular quote that jumped out at me was the following:

"Anyone that tells me Peyton Hillis did not have what it takes to be a Denver Bronco does not know much about football, in my opinion."

Well, according to the post, I may not know much about football, but Peyton Hillis was pretty good trade bait for the Browns. Before I continue, let's be absolutely clear that Hillis was a guy who has 397 career yards on 81 carries in 26 games. That is exactly 3.11 carries per game. So, essentially, over the last 2 years, he has touched it 3 times per game. Keep in mind, this season, he touched it only 13 times. So, under the new McD regime, he touched it less than once per game.

In 2008, he was only called upon when we had every RB and their mother on injured reserve. This year, he couldn't beat out LaMont Jordan for the 3rd spot on the depth chart. Now, don't get me wrong. I love me some Hillis. He plays tough and he makes for some pretty good Hillis/Norris jokes. However, for the Broncos, he didn't give us a constant powerful presence last season. You can't help out the team very much from the bench. Hillis needed a fresh start on a team that will utilize his power more than we will. The Browns are that team. In return, the Broncos got a young former first round backup QB who has the potential of being a starter if given some more time in this system.

As much as it pains me to say it, I don't think that Peyton Hillis would ever be the starting RB in Denver. We may as well get good value and give him to a team where he would be utilized. I do wish him the best of luck in Cleveland, though.

Anyways, this post isn't supposed to be entirely about Peyton Hillis. It isn't supposed to be "entirely" about any player. The reason I shared that with you is that we, as MHR members, are a part of a very brilliant community. John's challenge to us has always been "provide a solution". Well, I want to encourage you all to "give justification". Sure, you may say "Good riddance Chris Simms" or "Simms is a piece of trash", but why?

I'm not going to sit here and defend Chris Simms. He wasn't a very good quarterback for us, last season. However, I didn't (and I won't) say "Good riddance", "Simms is a piece of trash" or anything of the sort because, as a human being, he deserves respect and thanks for the time he spent with the Denver Broncos. It wasn't a successful season for Chris Simms, but he did give the fans, the coaches, and the organization his time, sweat, blood, and effort. I don't know if he gave his tears. That's not for me to know or discuss. Anyways, Chris Simms gave us a year of his life. The guy studied and competed for an entire year. Regardless of whether or not he had major surgery a few years ago, this guy tried to the best of his abilities to get on the field and win games for us. That deserves respect, IMO, and doesn't warrant being ridiculed, as a person.

In the case of Peyton Hillis, he deserves our respect, too. The guy was our saving grace in 2008 before he was injured. Thus began the Hillis/Norris jokes. For example, "Peyton Hillis doesn't sleep, he waits."

Anyways, there have been differing opinions about whether or not it was the right move to get rid of him. IMO, I think it was a great deal for the Broncos. Whether or not you agree, is up to you (and I'm sure that there will be more discussions in the comment section). The important thing we take away from this is that Peyton, like Chris, gave all he had to the Broncos. He spent 2 seasons with us and worked his tail off. The Rumblin' Redneck was a fan favorite.

So, what does this all mean? Even though these guys are no longer with the Broncos, they deserve our utmost respect for the time and energy they gave to the Denver Broncos and the fans. Although they may not have been the most productive, they did all they could for the Broncos, didn't get in any off the field incidents, didn't complain, didn't quit and didn't attack the fans. As fans, I feel it is prudent to give respect to those who give it to us. By doing some of the things that I listed above, they respected and did right by Broncos fans.

If a player didn't do right by us, then trust me, I'd be the first in line to bash him. Simms and Hillis weren't pro bowl or HOF talents, but neither of them deserve to be called trash or pieces of excrement.

As we go forward, through off season cuts, trades, etc., let's keep in mind what each player has done for us. We don't have to cheer for them, since they are on another team, but we don't have to personally bash them, either. If that player was a member of MHR and you said "member x is a piece of (blank)" you would probably get flagged or worse. Right? Just assume that the player in question is a member of MHR and post/comment accordingly. Again, it's up to you to form your own opinion about how to send a player off. Personally, I just feel that respect and thanks are the best ways to move on from one situation to the next. Yes, that means you, Derek Anderson......

While I absolute laud your perspective and comments...

there are those who enjoy being inflammatory and have no intention of justifying comments. By all means we should promote constructive criticism, underlining the word constructive. However, I personally would like an “Ignore button” for those deemed as unwilling/unable to post in functional and constructive way. One particular irritant for me is two or more of these types holding what amounts to be a telephone conversation (dominating a significant string of posts) to the point of excluding others from their conversation. It’s like hearing an overly loud and boorish person talking about their personal lives on a cell phone. Sigh, I guess this the way of the world nowadays.

It is important to note that this poster highly values this site and its efforts to monitor and encourage quality participation. My thanks for your efforts Kentucky, yours and all other responsible for producing and excellent site!

SBNation & MHR's version of an "Ignore Button"

Is the right to choose “Flag” option from the Actions button at the end of the comment/post.

by Brian Shrout on Mar 16, 2010 9:37 AM MDT up reply actions

There's a big difference between Ignore and Flag

Many of the posters that I would choose to ignore do not violate any guidelines and therefore do not warrant being flagged. Many other forums have the Ignore functionality so it’s not like it’s real advanced functionality. It’s not a big deal but it’s definitely a reasonable request.

We actually have the ability to ignore the small text.

If you click the bold text, then the small text will disappear. This way, if you see a drawn out comment and know you don’t want to read it because the bold part is already turning you off, just click the bold and everything else will disappear.

You can open and close it as you please.

Now I’m going to click on your bold! Just kidding. But it is a great way to get rid of comments that aren’t helpful in one way or another, so if you go back to that post you can get through the comments quicker.

I wish the best for both of those guys...

But I don’t think Simms will ever be successful in the nfl. I say that because of his post traumatic stress injuries he has now…I don’t believe he will ever get that hit out of the back of his head. Great post and I agree with you 100%, but when it comes to other teams especially teams in our division, I say stick a fork in them and make sure they are done!

Completely agree
He wasn’t a very good quarterback for us, last season. However, I didn’t (and I won’t) say “Good riddance”, “Simms is a piece of trash” or anything of the sort because, as a human being, he deserves respect and thanks for the time he spent with the Denver Broncos.

I would also like to add that (if any of you are like me), there is no way that I could perform half as well as Simms did. I think I would have personally wet myself if I were thrown into a NFL game staring down 300+ lb. linemen whose job was to specifically hit me as hard as they could. No Thanks!

As for Hillis, I hate to see him go, but he wasn’t a fit for the new regime and I’m happy to see that he’ll get a chance in a system that fits him better.

Absolutely DBF. (I agree so much that I was tempted to bold "absolutely", but I didn't want it to seem that I was yelling.)
I think I would have personally wet myself if I were thrown into a NFL game staring down 300+ lb.

Throwing in what bfree said about Chris Simms being shell shocked from his traumatic injuries and there is no way I would ever want to step back behind center. I could not agree more, DBF. Simms had the guts (no pun intended) to come back out and try it again. That probably was weighing on his mind when he was taking snaps. One thing that nobody can ever call this guy is a coward. He gets a big Mile High Salute from me, even though he didn’t perform very well in 2009. Best of luck, Chris.

I’m just thrilled Simms was cut.

Same way I was thrilled when we cut Webster and Manuel last offseason.

My satisfaction comes from knowing Denver is better without these players. What Simms does from here is up to him.

Chris, may I suggest the broadcast booth to replace your Bronco hating father.

We’re good like that.

I agree with him though. I mean, I wish Simms well, I hope he makes it as a solid backup on another team – maybe even a starter. But he did cost us 2 games last year and I do get some of the hate directed toward him.

I’d like to take Chris Collinsworth and Phil Simms and put them on an endless cruise to nowhere, myself.

I hate that it was silenced.

The post that was deleted was a post by a very passionate fan. He stood on his courage of convictions, and stated what he believed. He was merely letting people know that being upset with the Broncos Organization and disagreeing with them did not mean you were not a Broncos fan. He had been to every game since ,85, I think. he spoke from his heart, and that I respect forever.

His historical knowledge was awesome, and the administration of this site chose to squelch it as opposed to let a fan speak his mind. Who knows, maybe more of us would have admitted that we felt just like him. Things get Censored out of fear, and it seems that if you don’t drink the kool-ade, your opinion is offensive. If only we all had the courage of convictions to speak from the heart like he did, this world would be a better place.

No chance for a “spirited” conversation about football, as the admin squashed it. Do you realize what might have been learned from a man who has been to that many games personally? the TV does not show everything going on on the field. His insight could change alot of opinions. But, we will never know, because certain opinions are not allowed (we know, we know). Oh, well.

I am sure I will get roasted for this post, but I am willing to stand in the heat, and stand for what I believe to be right. I did not agree with everything he said, but was very interested in the debate that never followed due to squelching.

  Oh, well…..Go Broncos.

No, I don't think you'll be roasted kybm.

I don’t know that it’s fair to say “the admin squashed it”. In order for a post to get deleted, there have to have been other members that flagged it. John isn’t going to just say “well, I don’t like this opinion so I’ll use the giant delete button on my desk and it will be gone.” The post probably rubbed a number of people the wrong way, they flagged it and reached John’s magic number and it was gone. It’s not that the MHR staff is going out of their way to suppress opinions. The community does have a say in all of this. John has told us all of this before. If members flag a post and the number of flags reaches a certain “magic number”, then it is deleted.

That member is always welcome to present his opinions, again. However, maybe next time it will be in a manner that doesn’t attack many of the members here. I agree with you, in that I didn’t agree with everything he said, but he was passionate, for sure, and I respect that.

It does relate to this post, in a way. It’s great to have opinions, but there is a way to present them without attacking or belittling another person. That post was a great example of that, I believe.

Thanks for bringing this up, kybm.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

From what I understand about deletions

The only way John will delete a post or a comment is if a large number of the members flag it as being inappropriate as determined by the MHR Code of Conduct.

We live in an age when instant gratification isn't fast enough

by Brian Shrout on Mar 16, 2010 12:10 PM MDT up reply actions

I am aware of the code of conduct...

But I also believe we ought to be a little more tolerant and hear what is being said. if we were to “take the meat and leave the bones” so to speak, there was an awesome chance and opening to hear what a passioned fan had to say.

Flags are thrown a little quickly these days. I just am not convinced it was right this time. This is football talk. Football is a contact sport that carries a rare dedication among it’s fans. Anyone can scream “foul”, but only a brother that understands can let a friend (fellow fan) vent. Hard issues are not like wine, they do not get better with time. He spoke his heart, and no one can deny that (even Benna mentioned his passionate words). I have not flagged anyone on here with the exception of foul and abusive language (porkchops little brother got on with porkchops log-in and thought he’d be funny). I love spirited debate (see code of conduct), Despite what everyone may think, there is a split in the fan base. Some are loving it, other are hating it, and some try to keep the delicate balance in check. In all things though, they are ALL Bronco fans!!! McD has made questionable calls, the football I’ve seen has NOT been BRONCOS ball (as I know it). However, I also have no choice, but to sit back and go along for the ride, because I AM A FAN, and there is no where I (nor he) would rather be. That is love and dedication! That is a trait that seems to be fading in Bronco Mania (no more rocking mile high? are you serious?)But he got flagged, and deleted. Just seems left of center, that’s all.

A bit.

There wasn’t anything included in his article about having an antagonistic tone, though. That would have been ironic. The article, itself, invited flags just because of its tone. It was almost trollish in the way that it came after MHR. If it didn’t have those parts, then I don’t think it would have been flagged.

Certainly, the antagonistic tone aside, there was a lot of good stuff in there. I don’t think people flagged it because it talked bad about McD or anything like that, I think they flagged it because it talked bad about MHR.

This is a great post about behaving with dignity and class. While several players did not perform as well as we (and they) would have hoped, they do not deserve to be belittled or insulted. Too often we, as fans, cross the line from supporting our team to “blaming” the team for not living up to our lofty expectations. Our dismay is a function of our irrational belief that the Bronco’s should be in the Super Bowl each and every year. Easier to boo than admit we were mistaken in our belief.

We sometimes confuse passion with anger in these forums, though; passion is always allowed. Anger at the result of a sporting event? Not so much……. unless your a British soccer fan……….

While it has been pointed out here that his coverage skills were less than hoped thus putting DJ into coverage more often than would have been preferred, I thought he was a heck of a football player and would have liked to have seen him stay. I have read that he was a positive influence in the locker room as well, and of course we never saw him in the headlines or police blotters.

Xs and Os – As SIL he came out on passing downs, presumably to allow a nickle back cover the TE, and presumably to allow the SOL to rush the passer when bringing heat from the strong side, but wouldn’t the SS normally be responsible for the TE, or the SOL if the WOL is rushing?

I remember one his sacks against Cincy’s Carson Palmer where Doom was coming from the strong side and Andra came right up the gut between center and right guard – his blitz timing was impeccable.

Reportedly he’s signed with the Bills – they’re getting a darn good football player.

Well, there I go trying to make a joke again,

and it comes out like that. It’s sarcasm. I know you get it, KB, but for those who don’t know me, I’m not being serious here. I wish there was a delete button sometimes. I write more retractions than I do comments these days.

The South Stands

I’ve been a Broncos fan my entire life. Born and raised in the greatest city in the world! As a child I remember going to games with my Grandparents. They had tickets in “The South Stands” and I always remember the exhilaration of being a part of the chaos.

There was so much passion there! Big burly dudes with bigger tattoos and bright orange shirts; screaming for the opponent’s blood! But amongst the fierceness, there was always a respect. A respect for the people around you — a respect for the other Broncos’ Fans! Respect for the team. People didn’t boo a QB in the preseason. Sure, there were Raiders fans that were dumb enough to show up and talk trash and Broncos fans that defended their home with insightful jabs and witty retorts. But at the end of the game, the fans would pat the losers on back and tell them, “Good game. Maybe next time.” And snicker…

Maybe I was wearing orange colored glasses. Maybe it was just a different time. But I like to think that Broncos’ Fans are still classy. I’d like to think that Denver still knows how to get loud, without getting hateful. That we now how to get mad, without getting small.

I see MHR as a place to cultivate that spirit. A place to grow respect while we each learn more about the game, our team, and each other.

To all the men that fought for us on the field last year and beyond. Thank you. And thanks for the great post kentuckybronco.

love this comment, troy

thank you!

"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.

Sign and Dump

I am getting a little wary of the sign and dump trend of the Broncos to get players in free agency and dump contributors from last year. I know the NFL is a business, but I would sure rather watch players compete on the field than on the free agent fantasy chart.

If I played for the Broncos, I would be wary of hearing how valuable I was to the team, then have a signing and a dump follow shortly thereafter. I understand in with getting Quinn at a cheap price and Simms just not being the QB he was, but it wasn’t a very smooth transition, IMHO. I guess it is just a different era now.

I think

the sign and dump trend is due to the continuous but incremental upgrade needed when starting so low on the talent level. You can’t go out and sign all the top talent the same year; the initial financing needed would be too high. When we have reached a level of consistent quality across the team, I doubt the “trend” will continue.

This is a point so many overlook.

We’ve been very deficient in talent after years of questionable personnel decisions. It stands to reason there will be turnover especially with a new coach implementing new systems and ideas of what player fits his mold. Continuous improvement at each position is the ideal. If there’s an upgrade available why wouldn’t you make it?
