Trading Down in the Draft
There seem to be a lot of Mocks on the site which see the Broncos trade down in order to get either Iupati or Pouncey. I like this idea in order to get more picks and draft a player in a position of need. However how easy would it be to trade down in this draft? Are there the type of players that are significantly better than others in the same position within this draft that could fall out of the top 10 and warrant a team to draft up? Also I just wonder why the other 10 teams picking ahead of the Broncos would not want to do the same and prevent any suitors for the 11th pick?

All we can hope for is that a team above us is targeting a certain player like Spiller and know he wont get to them, I hope so!!
I see it for sure
I totally see Seattle over-paying to get what they think they want. If they dont take a OT at #6, they will package #14 pick, their #40 (2nd rd), #101 (4th rd) and an offensive lineman.
Pete Carroll falls in love with players and will over pay.

forgot what Seattle gets...
We would give up #11 (to get ahead of SF) and Marshall.

Additional trades after that too...
I see us trading down multiple times and getting about 6-7 picks in the 1st 4 rds.

The biggest name will be Jimmy Clausen
There should be at least five or six teams vying for his services in the first round. Think Jay Cutler in 2006. The Broncos were not a team ANYONE suspected to be looking at a QB that early in the draft, and they traded up (and traded A LOT) to get Cutler. The 2006 is easily the best draft the Broncos have seen in the last 10 years, and likely the whole NFL.
This year’s draft is similarly filled chock full with talent. Clausen is not a top ten lock. In fact, smart money right now says he falls to the Broncos’ pick at 11. That selection automatically becomes trade bait. Not to mention they will probably be looking at guys like C.J. Spiller, Joe Haden, Rolando McClain, possibly Dan Williams, and maybe an elite OT or two.

That said
I don’t necessarily think they are trading down in hopes of Pouncey or Iupati. They have shown a vested interest in the OTHER C/G’s in this draft like Vlad Ducasse, J.D. Walton, and Matt Tennant as far as we know. I think the Broncos will go BPA in the first round, probably regardless of where they pick.
If Pouncey or Iupati so happen to be the BPA on their board at that point in time, then so be it. My top target for them if they trade down right now is Golden Tate, who fits everything this offense and coaching staff is looking for in a wide receiver. He solidifies our depth at the position, and he gives us a legitimate option if Marshall is gone.
I think trading down also allows us to select Dez Bryant later in the first round if we so choose. Bryant’s stock is free falling right now. There was even one analyst who thought he could fall out of the first round, but there’s no way he gets past the Jets at 29. The Broncos could theoretically trade down to the 22nd pick with the New England Patriots and still nab Bryant at a reduced price, AND an extra second round pick with which to select a lineman or two of their choosing. Trading down makes a ton of sense right now.
If there is no trade down, my top target is Joe Haden. We will be SOOOO fortunate if he falls out of the top ten, and right now it appears as though he will. UF’s pro day is today, so he could improve his 40 time, and likely will, but I think he is still a legitimate option at 11.

Haden just ran a high 4.3, low 4.4 in the 40 at UF Pro Day
I’m hoping he falls to 11

I don't want Bryant in any round. To many question marks. If we are going to draft Bryant, why not just keep Marshall?
C'mon draft! I am ever the optimist! What a fun time of year!

pay is set for next 4-5 yrs while B Marsh gets
gets huge contract after this yr. Not a Bryant fan right now, but I see why they are not comparing apples and apples.

Someone recently posted a list of guys that we tried out last year...
In terms of position, it correlated very well with the positions we drafted but in some cases we drafted people at those positions who we didn’t try out privately. What I take from the interest shown in Ducasse, Walton, Tennant etc is that they are definitley targetting G and C in the draft.
I suspect that the guys brought in are (for want of a better word) “fringe” players-of-interest. By that I mean that Denver is not 100% sure if they fit the system or not, so they bring them in for a better look. I suspect that they already have a short lisrt of players that they are confident fit their system and don’t need to see them more closely and reveal their hand. I hope guys like Pouncey are on it but we will probably never know.
we have a trade to announce...
no way McD holds onto the 11th….stockpile picks for this year and next makes the most sense imo. the talent runs deep in this draft no reason to overpay one guy.
