Horse Tracks - 3/17/10 - Happy St. Patrick's Day!
One of the first real signs of spring to me - St. Patrick's Day. The sun always seems to shine a bit brighter today, and it is a welcome change from the cold and gray. It also is another milestone as we head full-steam towards the NFL Draft. Of course, all eyes are in Florida today for the Gaters' Pro Day. To me, these Pro Days, especially for quarterbacks, has become a big waste of time. While scouts have the ability to get players in other positions to do the drills they are looking for, QBs are treated different. With millions on the line, agents have a big influence on what the players do and don't do. So either way, for me at least, the Pro Day wouldn't change my mind on a prospect. I believe what I see on Saturday's.

The Sunday before the trading deadline, I reported that the Browns were interested in trading defensive end/linebacker Kamerion Wimbley. With pro days now in full swing, big-time names and programs routinely take center stage, making it easy to miss top performances from some mid-level prospects. With fresh start in Denver, Quinn could have chance to flourish
The recent spin of the NFL's quarterbacking merry-go-round reminded me of a phone call I received about a month before the 2007 draft from an angry Charlie Weis. It didn't matter that we had collaborated on a book about his coaching career a year earlier. Weis wanted me to know, in a way that he would communicate displeasure over an official's call, that my mock draft for NFL.com had a glaring omission in the top five: Brady Quinn.

LaDainian Tomlinson wants to cap his career with a Super Bowl ring. He believes the New York Jets can help him deliver on that dream.

Lions QB Stafford enjoys having input into offseason moves
Every NFL quarterback would like his team to add more offensive weapons. Matthew Stafford is doing something about it.
Tebow's workout likely won't have any impact on draft status
Tim Tebow's well-publicized makeover has created quite a stir in the scouting community, but will do little to impact his draft status across the league. Teams that were fond of Tebow prior to the change will remain enamored with him due to his extraordinary intangibles and leadership skills. On the other hand, teams that regard the former Heisman Trophy winner lightly will continue to have issues with his skills as a passer.

Thanks for the tracks John
March has been full of good news for the Broncos. It’s almost a shame that things are slowing down again.
well it may be St. Paddies Day
but it will be amateur night at bars all over the country. Good Morning and thanks for the Horse Tracks John.

Thanks for the news John!

Slight disagreement John.
For the most part, I think the Combine and Pro Days are completely worthless. They should probably represent less than 5% of a players evaluation. However, there is a certain utility to them for at least the following reasons:
1. A Pro Day is very important to a player who was injured or could not perform at the Combine.
2. A Pro Day is especially important to someone like Tim Tebow because of his unique circumstances. Obviously, it will be scripted, but Tebow has said that he will reject the advice of his agent and stay after his Pro Day workout to throw for any team that asks him. There is utility in this for potential suitors.
3. Throwing to your own receivers with practiced routes is more realistic than throwing to unknown receivers running cold, unfamiliar routes.
4. Measurables, though often overrated, do have SOME value. Do they not?
I see what your saying...
But like the combine, measurables, in a perfect scenario, in perfect conditions, in shorts and a t-shirt, do little for me. The games on Saturday mean more. Just my opinion, but the fact Joe Haden ran a 4.58 at the combine, then came back to run a 4.41 at his pro day does little to change my opinion of him either way….
Your points are valid, however.

One thing...
I do think is important, however, is how a guy takes care of his body during the downtime. If a guy comes to the combine, or shows up for his Pro Day out of shape, that is a huge red flag. It would be like us showing up at a job interview, unshaven, hair disheveled, smelling of alcohol. A red flag.
If a guy can’t stay in shape with millions on the line, what kind of player will he be when he gets those millions??

Depends upon the job I suppose...

SBNation just ate my post...
cause I forgot it consumes html-like formats for breakfast… Anyway, replace the “.” above with your own rude comment about sportswriters and fifths of whiskey before breakfast…
swg777 prospects can run 4.00/40 and that would be something to look at, but the split times are more important of how scouts evaluate a players skills.

Former Broncos cornerback Charles Dimry
I interviewed Dimry about a year ago regarding training players for the Combine. He now runs one of the Combine prep programs, among other things, and I asked him about his thoughts in terms of the utility of the Combine. His reply was thoughtful. He pointed out that many players who are caught in systems that don’t show their abilities off can gain attention through the Combine and Pro Days. He also said that in his own experience, the main drills that we think of – the vertical leap, 40, bench, etc – are limited in value, but that they are much like testing a student on basic skill levels. The positional drills are much more important when looking at the player’s overall value, and with that combined info, you can then go back to film and understand what you are seeing much more clearly.
I realized from that the value of the Combine/Pro Day lies in giving players a chance to show why you should look more closely at the film, and how it can enhance your understanding of what you might be seeing in a player who seems borderline. You can also recognize why a system was or wasn’t a good measure of the player’s skillset. It changed how I viewed the process.
It all starts with the lines
Interesting what the Jets GM said
I read that as “Yes we are looking, but if the price is not right we will stick with what we have”

Thanks for the tracks John,
I heard on another site where the Broncos and Josh Barrett came to terms on a contract. Do you have anything on that? And as for barnes he looks like a great prospect, along with several others in this draft. Taking Dez bryant in the 11th spot would be a reach imo, especially in this draft.
Barrett was an Exclusive Rights FA..
Just like Prater. His signing was nothing more than a formality….
