why not Brandstater ???
Jus tcurious,, why has Brandstater not had the chance? hes a tall mobile QB, hes has accurate short to mid passes,, hes lacking the long ball, but McDs plays are all short passes any way!!! McD had a hard-on for Cassel and this Brandstater guy kinda is built like him and is more mobile!!! i am not a fan of Casshole but if thats what McD wants then there he is..... im just wondering,, im a Bronco Fan stuck in Kansas, so i dont get to watch much preseason training camps and see all the articles and stuff on Brand stater

I don't see the acquisition of Quinn
as a message that Brandstater should pack his bags. I actually think Tom has a bright future with us.
Committing random acts of Brandon since 2006...
My thoughts exactly
While many people want drafted QB’s to start right off the bat, but with Brandstater I believe he will make a great developmental QB, and the next few seasons could be quite good for him.
My emptiness says it doesn't care.

McDaniels and his philosophy of quarterback development is what is important.
Not whether we feel Brandstater should be starting or even #2. Typically when a rookie quarterback comes to the nfl he is given time to learn the system and get his fundamentals down, just handing over the keys to the starting job has more to it than we see or know. McD knows what he wants and if he feels like Brandstater has the goods to start then he probably will.
It will take time
as bfree mentioned above, it will take time for him to get his shot. Just because he hasn’t played yet doesn’t mean he isnt getting looked at.
He will get his reps in training camp and OTAs, but this season will belong to Kyle Orton no matter what Quinn and Brandstater do…. however if Orton doesnt ellevate his game then it could be wide open with Orton heading to FA next year.
It will be interesting to see if Orton struggles in the preseason like he did last year, will there be any wavering from the coaching staff. Either way it’s Orton’s job to lose and that’s probaly why he is getting to conditioning on friday
I believe McD will announce his choice during Training Camp
and that will be his man. I don’t foresee pre season changing his mind unless Kyle is injured or something.

Stability
Is quite important for McD as well as a team.
My emptiness says it doesn't care.

Faulty logic
The assumption that Brandstater has not had a chance because he has not started a game or played much is faulty logic. The fact that he is still on the team and is still developing tells me that he is getting a chance. There is a lot more happening with a team than what is seen during a game. The guy who is not “getting a chance” is a guy that is cut from the team.
I agree
Brandstater did look good in limited pre-season role he had that doesn’t mean he’s ready to handle the Ferrari. McD has great quarterback credentials, and told New England when Tom went down we’ll be just fine with Cassel and he was right. I trust his logic with the development of Brandstater, pickup of Quinn and I think we all could see the need for Simms release. No need to call Cassel a Casshole it just makes you look childish!
CASSHOLE
sorry buddy if it makes me sound childish,, but i have reffered to him as that , ever since he went to KC,, 99% of all my friends are Chiefs fans,, and have their own lil nicknames for my broncos, so i have nicknames for their QUEEFS !!!!
and you meant “sound” childish. not “look” unless my webcam is on

C'mon draft! I am ever the optimist! What a fun time of year!

SHHHH
no one is supposed to remember that!!!
Nor does anyone really know.....
it is a “he said, she said” situation. It is just that most around here believe the coach’s version of the story.

IMO
McD wanted Cassel and asked what it would take to get him,,, cause i dont think NE would call McD and ask if he wanted to trade Cutler for Cassel,, i heard that Denver wasnt going to give up a 1st round pick for him that NE wanted,, when pioli found out, he offered his early 2nd rounder

IMO...
the truth is likely somewhere in the middle of the two camps. It is not unreasonable to think that Cutler and his agent were spinning it and it is not unreasonable to think a coach and front office would also spin the story to make them look better. I’m just amazed that anybody would completely believe one side when the only evidence is that “he said it so it must be true”.
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
Was it according to Bill Belichek
that the rumors about McDaniels wanting Cassel started AFTER the KC trade?
I’m not sure but I don’t think it was a he said she said, since a third party (Detroit? Tampa Bay?) was reported to have called McD throwing it out there. I could be wrong but if I remember correctly that was the line until the MSM got a hold of it at which time it bacame the 800 pound gorilla.
The QB position is set.

I actually can't remember all of it.....
I was just taking it all with a grain of salt. I would ask somebody for the chronology, but I fear at this point, the chronology of events would have the same bias as the person reporting it (which could favor either side).
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
from my understanding a 3rd team called JMD interested in Cutler . They proposed they get Cutler we get Cassell and the pats get the 3rd teams pick
I dont think he ever said yes or no but instead told them he would call them back about it because he was entertaining free agents that week and they never spoke again but the conversation was leaked .
Thats just how I understood it to go down .
But if I remember correctly...
it was our front office that said a team called about trading for Cassell…..if another team owned up to making the call, then I will agree that is how it started. I just don’t recall another team owning up to it….just analysts claiming it was one side or the other…but I could be wrong. After that though, there was a whooooooole bunch of “he said, she said” between the two sides about who was trying to call who to smooth things over.
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
and
in the grand scheme of things it doesn’t matter anymore
2011
I believe that is the year when will see Brandstater and Quinn battle for the starting spot. Till then lets hope Orton and the Broncos have a successful year, then we trade him for a second round pick.:)

Even when Simms was obviously failing...
McDaniels lacked the faith in Tom Bra…….. to put him in the game. As far as I know that’s the only reason to suspect any lack of faith in his ability.
With that said, the kid was a rookie in a complex system, and pushing him out there too soon might have done him more harm than good in the long run.
I haven’t see any evidence that Tom Bra…….. isn’t on track to compete for a starting job in 2011/ 2012. At least from what the fans see, he’s done everything one could expect.
He couldn’t put Brandstater in — if he did, barring injury, he would not be permitted to put Simms or Orton into the game.
The game was still winnable, you can’t put a player who has zero real game experience in at that point.
by Todd Jewell on Mar 17, 2010 10:46 AM MDT up reply actions
Couldn't
I would trust Simms of Brandstater because of his experience, It didn’t turn out well but you tend to trust your experienced QB over a rookie.
My emptiness says it doesn't care.
by Topher Doll on Mar 17, 2010 11:31 AM MDT up reply actions
To Clarify...
I was just posting the only reason why someone might believe McDaniels doesn’t think Tom Bra…….. can be successful in the league.
I didn’t say it was a particularly good reason.
53 man roster......
The fact that the broncos put Brandstater on the active 53 says it all to me. If they felt he did not have a chance to start they would have put him on the practice squad. The did not want to risk another team snatching him away from us alla Hixon a couple years ago.
by FootballguruCoreyS. on Mar 17, 2010 10:37 AM MDT reply actions
Curtis Painter was put on the active roster too.

McD brought Quinn to go head to head w/Orton
Brandstater wasnt even a thought! He’s developing as he should. He’ll be the PS QB this year, and continue to watch Quinn vs Orton (The Rally in Dove Valley part II). Get your popcorn…things are gonna heat up quickly.
"Attitude reflects Leadership" Hogblog...aka KSM
You sure love yourself some Quinn
I, along with everybody else would embrace Quinn if he were to win out – but this is not the Orton/Simms situation again. This is not Orton takes the 1st team reps, then Simms, then Orton. This is Orton – coming in as the starter, getting starter reps and Quinn having to prove himself in far fewer snaps than Simms was given last offseason. My prediction – this “Rally” ends with the same result as last season’s (assuming there really is an open competions – which all signs point to not being the case.)
Makes sense
Why waste reps when you can continue to help Orton improve.
My emptiness says it doesn't care.
BTW
I like Brandstater a lot – but he’ll be the one competing most directly for Quinn. He has to prove himself in that competition before thinking about the starter’s job and even then – unlikely until 2011 at the earliest – most likely 2012.
Too early to tell
I think the Quinn trade is interesting but, for now, see it mostly as an opportunity to upgrade. i don’t see it as a move to replace Orton as the starter this year.
If Orton is replaced this year it is more likely IMO to be Brandstater that does so because he has had a year in the system. It would mean that he has progressed significantly and is regarded as having a big upside. However, i don’t expect that to happening.
Since IMO QB success in this system (if not everywhere) is based more on the ability to become comfortable with the terminology, to have mastered the basics of footwork and throwing motions, and to make quick reads and quick decisions under pressure, I think we’ll have to see who eventually climbs to the top.
Orton has improved IMO in all the most important areas and with a better OL should be more effective in the longer throws if the pocket doesn’t collapse so far on top of him and if the running game is a more effective deterrent to defensive pass pressure.
TO has some skills, seems to be learning the terminology and basics, and is said to be smart (finished a masters in his five years at college). IQ smart however doesn’t always mean the "quick smart" or "speed intelligence" required in the NFL (McD’s "smart" player). I, however, personally like his chances to rise to the top.
Quinn is an unknown in my mind. That he hasn’t had much success in Cleveland may or may not be significant. It may be beside-the-point in McD’s mind and he’s had some experience developing QBs. However, since he’s new he has a lot of learning to do (being in Weiss’ system is also IMO beside-the-point). He is regarded as mobile, but that’s not apparently essential (i.e. Tom Brady and Peyton Manning). Increased pocket mobility can be learned to some extent by learning basic footwork (again both Brady and Manning). We’ll have to see what his “quick smarts” are like.
Which means, for me, it’s too early to tell what will fall out.
A final consideration – with the increased number of injuries at all positions, I think having three pretty reliable QBs might prove to be a good idea.

Stick around during Training Camp EnoreBmunSyawle
Last year I did some TC journal reports for the benefit of the out of town members.(Check my post history) I plan on doing it again this year too.
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
Good to hear, Kirk
I loved your stuff from last TC – can’t wait! We’ve had more folks going and writing it up each season – great to see
It all starts with the lines
NICE!!!
Those were GREAT reports too KK…Stuck in California, I really appreciated them!

TriAd
I think McD is doing what they did in NE. We now have 3 quality QB’s and if McD can find yet another QB that will improve the team he will not hesitate to change the QB’s. I like the fact McD has a plan and is adding better talent to improve the team and willing to work with them long range.
oc60
Take a step back and look at what you are saying. Everyone here thinks that even though he has never even been a BACKUP, some 6th rounder will be the next great QB. Do you all know how often late round QBs do nothing?
San Francisco fans don’t pretend Nate Davis will be great.
Colts fans don’t pretend Painter will be great.
Giants fans don’t think that Bomar will be great.
C’mon now.

I don't think this is a big deal....
look at all of the mock drafts and comments about how some of them will be playing immediately and be stewards for the next N years. These guys aren’t even in the NFL yet. It’s just what we fans do.
