Shawn Andrews
The Eagles released OG Shawn Andrews yesterday. It broke today. Andrews is an outstanding 27 year old Guard (1 Pro Bowl). He is about 6'5" 330#. He has had some back problems and has fought despression. As usual it has been mentioned that if he is on the right team he could be an impact player for several years out. Does anyone have anymore info on him. I have seen him play and he is a very good O-line man. Any thoughts?

Wats up my Bronco Boyz .................
U guys were right on the money with the Bucky and Dawk signings last year which i must admit still hurt 4 me. Now as for Andrews im gonna make it really simple…………..AVOID HIM AS IF HE WERE A FUKIN LEPER LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In all seriousness tho this is a really sad and sobering example how fast things can change in the NFL. At one point i can actually say without being biased that he was easily top 3 for guards in the league, and then he hurt his back and that was it, he never recovered. He never had the drive or the push 2 get himself back on the field at his former pro bowl level. We even brought his older brother Stacey in from the Bungles to help him be more stable and maybe motivate him, never happened and by week 4 i think he was deactivated 4 the year. This is such a sad example of an extremely talented young man who just didnt want 2 play football anymore.

He was an absolute MONSTER @ Arkansas. I watched him for years!
He would knock down wall! No exaggeration! Houston Nutt (Ex ARk Coach) had a knack for finding these huge, badass Olineman. Of course, that’s because he was a “Run 1st” coach.
Andrews has had a bad back for a few years as mentioned, and issues w/Mgmt. But IF he was healthy, and in the right frame of mind, he could anchor a starting role for years to come…BUT the issues and injuries come with the package.

depends
i think it depends what are draft strategy is. i think they cut a middle LB so they draft one in McClain and the cut the center so they move up or use the Bmarsh trade to grab Pauncey. it just makes to much sense to not pick these guys if available. the take over right away as starters and upgrade over what we had last year.
I just hope the correlation....
isn’t cut the middle LB and draft one with the idea he will start in his rookie year. Same for center. I am ok with drafting these positions, just not with expectation to start this year.
I say take a chance on Andrews if the price tag is low enough.

True
Bad idea to expect a rookie to start. If he comes in and takes the starting position things are that much better.
Derek Anderson is just as much a probowl quarterback as Jay Cutler
I agree with the exceptions of the OT and LB positions
If the history of recent drafts tells us anything, then it’s reasonable to expect (highly drafted) rookies to not only start but preform well.
For instance at LB;
Brian Cushing
Clay Matthews
Jerod Mayo, ILB
Patrick Willis, ILB
Should we as fans expect them to start? No, but the recent history suggests that LB and OT who played the position in college can step into an NFL roster and perform. Which, is why it wouldn’t shock me if the plan to replace Andra Davis was Rolando McClain. Twice in recent years a ILB has been drafted into a 3-4 defense and both (Willis and Mayo) became DROY. In addition, the last 7, (SEVEN!) DROYs have been LBs. That tells me it’s a position that coming out of college can have an impact in the pros right away.

Yes. But no sure thing.....
our last year first round pick, Ayers, is a direct example of this administration picking a 1st round LB that could not crack the starting lineup the first year.

You just can't draft with starter expectations....except for QB
I hope McD is smart enough to continue to blend veterans w/rookies to get a nice blend of talent today vs potential tomorrow. IF Shawn was healthy, believe me, he is massive, strong, and has a nasty disposition. He’d start this year and many more IF IF IF his back is good and mind is strong! But tha’s “IF”?

Even then
You will have to expect poor QB play. All three 1st round rookie qb’s last year was in the 60’s in their qb ratings. It is still wise to sect a qb in the 1st round and let him sit a year or two. See Aaron Rodgers.

yeah the major issue is the injury.
it might be worth the risk though

Heres' his scouting report...FYI
Scouting Report
Assets A huge man with great bulk and lower-body strength. An outstanding drive blocker who can push defenders around. Won’t lose a matchup when he’s latched on. Moves well in the open field for a man his size.
Flaws Slow off the snap and slow to react at times. Can get burned on the outside as a pass-protector. Has some conditioning issues.
Career Potential Pro Bowler.

wow!
we did it with clady and dj williams! with the 11th pick you can for sure expect to start. you must if your paying that kind of money. also with pauncey centers just don’t go in the first round for nothing. mcclain and pauncey should start right away or at least expect them to
While that is true
What if Denver went into that draft thinking Moss was going to be their starter. The truth is there is enough players in the first round that are busts or slow developers to be cautious of them.
Derek Anderson is just as much a probowl quarterback as Jay Cutler
What ever happened to
Denver’s 1993 #11 overall pick Dan Williams?
Derek Anderson is just as much a probowl quarterback as Jay Cutler
3ns
Good ol’ Dan Williams ‘eh? I remember him – out of Toledo if I’m not mistaken! Think it was one decent season and bust…. Sadly, it happens, and will do so again. Hopefully just not this year….
The Eagles made Andrews a #1 pick if I remember correctly, and to release him at this stage of the year, means they have decided that the prospect of a favourable outcome is bleak. They’ve had him in their organisation for years, and if they don’t know him, his body and his character, then why should we be lobbying to pick him up? Are we turning into the Raiders? A refugee camp for all outcasts and castoffs?? Think about it people, we need quality, and quality usually costs in all walks of life. In the NFL, that means a high, costly draft pick, or a top free agent. They all come at a price, my friends!!
I’d like to see us trade down from #11 to about #21, pick up Pouncey and then grab John Jerry in the 2nd or 3rd. That would set our OL for years. But I don’t see us going for Andrews, and given the psychological resume he’s presenting, I doubt very many other teams will chase him either. Maybe a year out of football would aid his body and mind. I wish him well, and the rest of you a Happy St Patrick’s from Northern Ireland!!
You also assume these guys would be available...
if this was McD’s plan and they were not available, we’d be in serious jeopardy. I don’t think McD is banking on those guys being available to draft and them both being ready to start.

I respectfully..........
Disagree, I don’t think there is any way McDaniels is thinking that he will draft a center and a guard in this years draft expecting them to start. You don’t go into the draft without options at every position. He either has an internal option already on the roster or prospects in free agency he hasn’t explored yet. No way he is naive enough to think he is gonna draft starters at multiple positions. Just my opinion.
no
im saying if mcclain is there take him. i think it makes a lot of sense to trade up for pauncey. i wouldn’t be mad though if we didn’t just makes sense.
The Eagles are not set on their offensive line. They don’t have the luxury of cutting pro-bowl caliber players.
So what does Andrews getting cut tell us? He is unhealthy, unmotivated, or depressed. My guess is that his back is in terrible shape, and the Eagles know this. I would love to say pick him up and roll the dice, but we don’t need to take the risk if the Iggles weren’t willing to do the same.
That's why they give these guys
physicals before they sign them. It wouldn’t surprise me if the McX team hasn’t already done some investigative work on him. If he is brought to Denver it will be interview and physical. If they think he will work out they offer him a contract. But like I said If he is even brought here.
Well, I understand we give them physicals. I really don’t think Andrews will get much of a look from us. He doesn’t fit our player profile in any way, shape, or form… other than his physical attributes, obviously.
Like I said, if he was in any shape to contribute, the Eagles wouldn’t have let him go. They can’t afford to lose good linemen, herego, if he was still good he’d still be there.
Between his injuries, his lack of commitment to the game, and his depression issues I think McDaniels watched the news of Andrews release from the Eagles roll across the ticker tape on the bottom of the screen and went back to drinking coffee.
This says it better than
I did. This is what I was trying to say.

it's a fairly low risk and potentially extremely high reward add
make it happen McX!!!

Well put bailey disciple!
It’s low risk ($$$) but could pay dividends later? If he’s potentially better @ OG than what we have, grab him. IF he’s not due to his injuries, then leave him alone! We’ve already seen the case of guy we really wanted, (Dwan Edwards) but didnt offer the kinda money he was wanting due to a spinal fusion in his neck. Ultimately Buffalo was willing to take the risk because they have a greater need. They put up the money hoping he is who they hope he is….we obviously thought Jarvis Green was a better pick with less risk and worth the money. It’s alwasy about risk/reward. I must say I was very dissappointed we didnt get Edwards. Dude’s a strong DE!
"Attitude reflects Leadership" Hogblog...aka KSM
And...I dont want McClain!
He’s too risky…he played behind the “butt end” of a mountain so he was constantly shielded from assault by opposing Olineman. Plus with his condition what it is, and the level of physicality going up exponentially, I just think he’s not woth top 10 $$$$. Go with Dan Williams at #11, or trade down for Jerry Hughes, Mike Iupati, Demaryous Thomas, Maukice Pouncey…..at say 18 or lower?
"Attitude reflects Leadership" Hogblog...aka KSM
This would be a nice add for us
If for nothing else, the competition he would bring to the position. We don’t have any depth on the interior line really. We have Seth Olsen, who I love, Hochstein who is just okay, and a bunch of guys who have never played before. I say bring him in for a look if nothing else.
A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is drudgery. But a vision with a plan can change the world.
IDK
Between the injuries, the back surgery, battling depression and the questions about his commitment, Andrews seems like a pretty big risk. I’m sure another team desperate for OL help will pay a handsome fee for his services (Washington, I’m looking in your direction…).
STAY AWAY!
I live 45 minutes outside of Philly, so naturally we get a lot of Eagles coverage around here. I just want to say, STAY AWAY from Shawn Andrews. This guy is crazy, and he has basically not played since 2007. He gets mysterious injuries left and right, which have sidelined him in all but 2 games in the last 2 seasons. Plus, no Eagles reporters ever seemed to know what was wrong with him, which leads me to believe there was something strange going on. The reports of his injuries were always conflicting, and at some point he was allegedly battling depression. If i’m not mistaking, he at one time was “seriously considering” retirement, but the Eagles managed to talk him out of it. In my opinion, Shawn has some much deeper problems to work out than anybody really knows.

Dawkins and Buckhalter
are guys that McX should ask about Andrews’ character.
My position is that if those two guys endorse bringing him in, then he should be brought in. Maybe he just needs a vote of confidence from a coach and organization and a change of scenery. who (among us) really knows?

Good point on having a few guys that might have some inside knowledge of the situation. Maybe the 300+ days of sunshine in Colorado will help his outlook (although therapy and medication are usually a better bet).
If he comes cheap and we can structure a contract that allows us to dump him without taking a big hit we should go for it. We need to sign some Oline guys before the draft, even if it’s only insurance and we cut them in the roster purges. I don’t want to be still looking for several guys after the draft when we will seem even more desperate for bodies than we allready are.

i think the eagles traded up for this guy, right in front of us. i was crushed because that meant they were taking steven jackson before we could. Then they took andrews instead and i started to dance, calling people and partying for about ten minutes knowing we got that beast of a back……i dont blame dj
luckily im a bronco and a blazer fan......#52 is family
As we have witnessed already McD is being very meticulous in his OLine selection, so I wouldn't put my hopes on him.
McD attacked the problems right away on the DLine, but has been cautious along the OLine. This might tell us one thing…He either has his eye on a couple of draft pick, feels he has the players in house (Fry, McChesney, Batiste and Seth), or he hasn’t found that special player yet that will eliminate the problems we had. Those three things are what McD is looking at right now and trying to put together that special OLine for Kyle and the offense…
he seems confident in Seth. no clue if he is comfortable with Fry.
My guess is that he is going to draft a G/C and put whichever of Seth and the rookie snaps the ball better at C.
