Whose Running the D

Ill admit it, i heard Jamie (dumb***) Dukes talk about Wink Martindale last night! He's got me worried. I know he's dumb and hates the Broncos but he is right Nolan was good and we let him go. I hope the FO knows what they are doing. I hope Martindale can call a 3-4 as well as Nolan. Dukes was saying that there are only a had full of guys that can call a good 3-4 and we just let him go. My one argument was that those last 4-6 games the D looked like crap. But on the same hand was it cuz Mcdaniels got more involved or that our lack of depth allowed some of our older guys to get burned out? Someone make me feel better!

:p

Because Nolan was leaving in a year anyway. Wink is, presumably, here for the long haul. Might as well get it done and cement this defense’s identity now instead of later.
And about Nolan and McD not seeing eye to eye… it’s because McD wanted to blitz more, but Nolan didn’t agree. Guess what Wink has in store? Yup, more aggression. Now the head coach has a DC with whom he’s on the same page, and one the players respect immensely.

I like what we have coming… harder, faster, and more aggressive than an angry Indian cobra (and trust me, you don’t want to see an angry Indian cobra…)

(…but if you do, just check YouTube for the snake handler “training” his baby.)

To add to TB's comment

Martindale was here last year also, so there will be a smooth transition for the players. The nomenclature stays the same and everyone is familiar and comfortable with one another. With the bulk we just signed, I am expecting a definite improvement on the overall Defense, and the Run Defense in particular.

We're fine

McD got rid of Nolan because he only rushed the QB through our secondary. McD wanted more frontline push into the backfield. Wink beefed up the Raiders D. And he understands how to penetrate the backfield with the guy on their knuckles! We’ll be fine!

by valas40 on Mar 17, 2010 1:29 PM MDT reply actions

It was mutual

Nolan was not pushed out, he wanted to go, and McD, I think, kinda wanted him to go as well. That crap about us just ‘letting him go’ and that he was canned is inaccurate. Once again Dukes proves his ignorance about the team.

It takes neither courage nor intelligence to cheer for a team only when that team wins. The true test of a fan's mettle is the same as it is for a player: Were you there when you were needed?

I am comfortable with Wink, and excited to see what he can with this talented D of ours.

One reason I am comfortable with Wink, is that the players like him, respect him, and want him to lead their defense. They know the man, they’ve worked with the man, and they WANT him their. When we have Hall of Famer’s like Dawkins and Bailey saying this things, I can only help but be excited about it as well.

Another thing I like about it, is that Wink had a chance to learn under Nolan last season. He saw what Nolan did with the team, and he probably saw what went wrong at the halfway point for us.

I also like the juevos on Wink. After Nolan and McD decided to part ways, Wink went into McD’s office and told him, in no uncertain terms that he was ready for it and wanted the d-coordinator job. McD said, “Yup!”.

Since Nolan isn’t staying, I’m really happy about the promotion from within.
Hopefully Wink will do well and we can stop the one and done DC revolving door.

Wink attack

I am concerned about Wink’s health. From looking at his photo it looks like he is 1 burritto away from a heart attack or stroke!

by LAbroncfan on Mar 17, 2010 6:45 PM MDT up reply actions

I hope this helps.

First, Nolan is a very good DC. He turned our program around from the ’07 and ’08 disasters and gave us a great run for the first part of the ’09 season.

We saw a program that created blitzes from around the LBing corps, and stopped runners in their tracks. But as the season wore on, I think our players wore down. Nolan did what he could, but he didn’t have a lot to work with. He patched things together, and gave us a better than even chance of havong a good defense. Few DCs could have turned around the program like he did.

Nolan didn’t seem like he wanted to be in Denver long term. I suspect that he wanted to head east, and that’s ok.

So now the question is, do we bring in an outside with a lot of experience, or bring in a new guy. COnsider Denver’s position – we’ve changed DCs every year for years. McDaniels is making a smart move, and giving our team consistency. By promoting from within, we keep the language, the playbook, and (for the most part) the system.

Also bear in mind that we have already brought in three FAs to address the DL. Even if one or two are busts (and I doubt that) we’ll see some improvement if even one position improves. Consider also that we don’t have the brutal schedule of last year. I think the defense will be reasonably good this year.

And trust your gut. Dukes doesn’t know what he’s talking about. I’ve written this for years – any DC can run a 3-4. There is really no such thing as a 4-3 or 3-4 coach. I ran a 4-3, and prefered it. But if I went to a program that had the right fit for a 3-4, the adjustments would be minimal. Martindale HAS been coaching in a 3-4 system, so Dukes’ comments are void anyway.

I’m with you, anything Dukes says I’ll assume the opposite is true. That guy can’t be any smarter than my grade school friend who used to consistently run through screen and/or glass doors without seeing them.

IF you honestly listen to them, you really need to rethink your programing priority. Taking there insights to heart is like havinag Dr.Jack Kevorkian telling Dr James Andrews how to repair knees and shoulders. I mean c’mon….really?

yes!

i feel better already. great points i didn’t realize the part of nolan only blitzing with secondary and lb’s. i agree that doesn’t make a ton of sense. i think the corp of D-linemen we got this year is going to help a ton.

a lot like what we did last year with the secondary. bring in proven free agents and then draft some young talent to learn from them. im excited.

Jaimee Jaimee Jaimee

First it was how stupid the Broncos were for firing MS, then it was how stupid we were for letting go of the best QB to ever play the game, then how stupid we were with B. Marsh and now how stupid we were to get rid of Nolan. Maybe just maybe the only stupid thing here is Jaimee Dukes. Yep, thats it.

by johnnyurrotten on Mar 17, 2010 2:43 PM MDT reply actions   1 recs

Wink

First of all I am really excited about him. I read somewhere he is connected to the Ryan defensive tree. He is built somewhat like them. I have always thought the Ryans knew their D-fensive stuff. I love aggressive defense, if I never saw prevent again it would be to soon. The recommendation from the all pros is good but it makes me a little nervous knowing some of the same guys, Bailey for sure, recommended Slowik. Jamie Dukes stinks on every level concerning the Broncos – my favorite interview is when #80 kept showing him his super bowl rings.

by pastordan on Mar 17, 2010 3:48 PM MDT reply actions

Dukes? Oh, my....

Please, don’t let him concern you. He’s never shown much to be concerned about, on the field or off.

Moving on to people with higher IQs….Nolan implemented McD’s defense, and I may have missed any discussion of that if it has come up. Martindale will do so as well. While there were some disagreements on game day defensive play-calling, Nolan seemed to want to move back east. He’s a class gentleman and I wish him well

Wink Martindale has earned a shot at DC. It’s clearly true that Nolan didn’t have enough to work with. Once the defensive scheme’s weaknesses were exposed, everyone we played was able to perform better against the Broncos. Most of that was personnel – McD was also said to want to be more aggressive than the choices in the second half of the season. There was very little defensive talent left when Shanahan was fired – this is, and was, more than a 1 year job. some of the more negative commenters seem to have ignored that fact. FA seems to be going well in that respect – Bannan, J. Williams and J. Green are all quality players. Health will always be a factor, and is especially important with Williams history of injury, but even so, Nate Jones, Bannan and Green are all good choices. I like J-Will a lot, but he has a habit of dealing with injuries at this stage of his career. Martindale has more to work with than Nolan did, and hopefully we’ll have more to work with each year.

I don’t know that you’d place Martindale on the Ryan coaching tree. His work at Western Kentucky was excellent, his work with Oakland (which is, I believe, where the ‘tree’ issue comes from) was superb and he himself was an all-state linebacker at the HS level. He also coached at that level before moving on, 1st to Notre Dame and then to University of Cincinnati. He has a wealth of experiences and has given Denver good reason to promote him. No matter who came in, they would be brought in to teach and execute McD’s defense. After the defensive lotteries under Mike Shanahan, this is a welcome change. I’m looking forward to 2010

It all starts with the lines

I think the “Ryan tree” thing came from a story that Klis did at the Super Bowl, where Martindale himself claimed a branch (evidently when he was going out to dinner with Rex, unless I misread the setup). I should go look for it, but it’s St. Patrick’s Day and I’m drinking a Guinness.

I do believe one of the Ryans was either the coach or DC at Western Kentucky…

Yup - fair point

But the point was that the players aren’t necessarily the guys who know best.

Agreed, they are in too close a working relationship with the coach to have a completely objective viewpoint.

Wink was/is part of the Ryan Coaching Tree...

It was from an article written during the Probowl where Wink and Rex met at a local diner for breakfast. In the article, it chronicalled the extent of their association with Buddy, Rex, and Rob during their coaching days back in W Kentucky and wink working wih Rob in Oakland. When questioning Rex about Wink he said Wink has been part of the family for years and YES, Wink both knows and intimately undrstands the complexities of Buddy’s famous “46” defense. Whew…. That’s all I remember. Wink has an excellent resume’. I’m glad he was promoted to DC.

Let me ask you this question? Who do you believe...Champ Bailey or Jamie Dukes?

Don’t answer it, because I know the answer already. We as fans don’t have the previledge of knowing exactly what went on behind closed doors at Dove Valley and I am fairly confident that Dukes doesn’t either. So, we are all left to wonder why Mike Nolan left for Miami…Right? OK…We do know this much, Nolan has ties there or near by and may have wanted to slide on down there or McD was dissatisified with his coaching. I have my suspicions, but I’ll keep them to myself. Nunnely and Martindale (who were here in the defensive system) are back and Martindale is now the defensive coordinator, a position he is well qualified in. So that isn’t a problem. It seems kind of funny that Nolan, Peterson and Davis were showed the door doesn’t it. Again, we dont have access to Dove Valley so anyhting we say or do is pure speculation. The Denver broncos come first and anybody who thinks or shows different will be out the back door…Jamie Dukes couldn’t be a pimple on Don Martindale’s rear-end…So why even get all excited about anything he says?

by bfree2bronc on Mar 17, 2010 9:53 PM MDT reply actions

D will be better this year- If Nolan doesn't want to be hear then the get the @#$# out!

McD wants people who buy into the system Nolan didn’t want to be and Wink does, good. Thats sweet that Wink was part of the Ryan Tree, Didn’t know that.
Jamie Dukes and Rod Woodson= Together they are horrible and apart they quite as bad. Both seem to be Broncos bashers most likely because of Cutlergate.

by Marvel Man on Mar 18, 2010 6:28 AM MDT reply actions

I wouldn't get that upset about Nolan leaving, Dukes is the instigator in this discussion.

The relationship between Nolan and McDaniels may or may not have been strained, I don’t know. Because there could be 100 different reasons why Nolan isn’t in Denver anymore. What if Nolan and McD had a mutual agreement that he would come in and revamp the defense and move on. Maybe his original plan was to go to Miami before McD coaxed him into rebuilding the fledgling defense before he left. We can sit here and conjecture any scenario we want, but it doesn’t make it truth and that’s all Jamie Dukes is doing, conjuring up a report in hopes we believe. The problem with that is, we’ve caught Dukes is lies before, so we can’t really believe a word he says…Right? I won’t anyway and when I watch NFLnetwork I keep in mind that part of this show is football’s WWE…
