Around SBN: Nevin Shapiro Vows To Bring Down Miami

Draft talk with Kiper/McShay

http://espn.go.com/espnradio/player?rd=1#/podcenter/?id=5002416&autoplay=1&callsign=ESPNRADIO

Star-divide

1.     Dez Bryant - I disagree with this pick now that it is reported that he needs to be BABY SAT.  Yes he is talented but not even close to Brandon Marshall.

2.     Rolando McClain - Agree that he isn't a ELITE LB.  Sure he is good but is he worth the 11th Pick???  I don't think so.  I would rather have Dan Williams or Joe Haden.

3.    Dan Williams - Kiper says NT is one of the hardest postions to fill and Williams is a great choice for Miami.

I still think that I would rather have Dan Williams or Joe Haden than Rolando McClain for Denver.

Haden is my pick if he's there....

If not I’d be okay with McClain or Williams, but would rather trade down for Pouncey

Starter at #1

With the 11th pick Broncos need someone who can start and contribute now. All you have to do is look at the past and see what Al Wilson meant to Broncos Defense. I believe that Rolando McClain is of the same mold & character and will make Denver’s Defense top notch immediately. With Martindale as our DC I can’t help think that he will convince McD to draft McClain at #11. I seriously doubt McD will waste a #1 11th pick on someone who won’t start, he will trade down before he has to compromise his plan. Signing Jamal Williams was IMO to teach Fields, Baker, and Thomas at NT. Haden would be a nice pick but where will he start? We have A. Smith already waiting in the wings at CB. I think if McClain is gone at our 11th pick we trade down and pick up one of the following; Vlad Ducasse-G/C,Mike Lupati-G, Bruce Campbell-OL, Trent Williams-T, DeMaryius Thomas-WR. This draft will go a long way to improve the offense which I believe is McD’s top priority. Just my opinion.

I love McClain and wouldn't be disappointed...

But after seeing some comments from our medical experts here at MHR, I"m not sure the Crohn’s is something that I’d risk at pick 11. Before that came out I was 100% on his bandwagon, but now I’m not so sure.

I also don’t care if they don’t start right away. I’m more interested into picking up a player who will be an impact player 3-5 years from now as opposed to trying to fill a hole for next year. I’m all for BPA. If that happens to be McClain then so be it.

by Kgrone on Mar 18, 2010 7:35 PM MDT up reply actions

Take my word for it . . .

Not taking McClain because he has Crohn’s is like not taking him because he might have a knee injury in the future. The fact that he has joints that MIGHT be injured at any time represents a greater risk to his future ability than his inflammatory bowel disease. He’s been diagnosed for years and it certainly hasn’t kept from playing at a high level in college. There is no reason to believe that will change in the pros.

Any “medical expert” who tells you otherwise has a screw loose.

by Halfdanish on Mar 18, 2010 8:59 PM MDT up reply actions

It's not the same at all.

Crohn’s disease is a chronic incurable inflammatory condition characterized by repeated bowel problems. There are treatments which can help control the disease but these are potent immunosuppressive drugs which are not conducive to a professional athlete’s conditioning or safety. The odds that he will have an episode of disease placing him on IR is high, and it can’t be assumed that his previous course of illness will continue. The only two NFL players with Crohn’s were Rolf Benirschke and David Garrard both of whom were diagnosed after they were drafted. Both missed significant time and required surgery which in Benirschke’s case was life threatening. The odds are very different for an unanticipated knee injury. So your statement

“There is no reason to believe that will change in the pros.”
is erroneous and countered by known medical statistics. Since he currently has active disease at the pro day by his own admission, he has a 70% chance of continued active disease for the next 12 months. Those aren’t good odds. Many lay people refuse to heed the advice of health care providers for various reasons, but any team ignoring advice on McClain are the ones who have a screw loose.

3 to 5 years

Kgrone, I’d agree with you if he’s a 2nd to 4th round pick most contracts offered to 1st & 2nd rounders are for 4 to 6 years. But, if your #1 pick is making 30M plus with a 17m guarantee most owners are not waiting for high draft pick to be ready in 3 years. Hence the reason Broncos may want to trade down to #17 to #24 and still get the player they covet. Unless one of the top 10 falls to Broncos and if the player they have targeted is still available who would it be? I think at #11 if McClain, Bulaga, Ducasse are still there they will draft one of them. I hope McClain is the next Al Wilson for Broncos.

I may have worded that poorly...

I don’t want 1st rounders to wait 3 years before playing by any means. What I’m saying is that I don’t want to draft to fill a hole for next year and reach for a player with less upside than others available.

I think Ayers is a good pick to back this up, as long as he improves this year (which I think he will). He made an impact in this year, but wasn’t unbelievable by any means. I think he’ll improve this year and by year 3 will be an absolute beast. I agree we don’t want to tie up that kind of money for a bench warmer. Obviously I want our top picks to make an immediate impact, I’m just not worried about it if it takes them a year to ‘get it’.

Fill holes in free agency, and draft BPA who has the most upside. There’s not a position that I would be upset if we spent our 1st rounder on as long as the guy has trremendous potential (any safety not named Berry might be a downer).

Bryan Bulaga

Would be an excellent pick. He can start at any Offensive line position Day 1. Would be a great fit for Denver at Left Guard and could step into replace Clady or Harris if either were to get injured. Don’t get caught up thinking inside the box look at the players strengths and weakness and ask yourself how they can help Denver.

Hayden...

Would love to get him, get Champ’s replacement before he is gone. One year under Champ is worth a lifetime under most cornerbacks.

by northoftheborder on Mar 18, 2010 8:06 PM MDT reply actions

Ditto

You beat me to it. The more I think about it, Hayden SHOULD give us the best value. I’d say lockdown or “Elite Cornerbacks” are even harder to find than nose tackles. Learning from Bailey sure wouldn’t hurt him either!

Al Wilson isn't a reasonable simile

The 3-4 ILB isn’t the same position as MLB in a 4-3. While leadership is always a positive, to consider drafting an MLB as somehow akin to looking for an ILB overstates the case.

Merriman

why not just get RFA MARRIMAN from SD and then draft Haden?

Nose Tackle is so tempting. Jamal Williams can’t have more than 2-3 years in him. But right now, with no Andra Davis, we don’t even have an NFL-starter quality ILB to team with D.J. Williams.

Ok, I decided we can’t take Dan Williams, because that would be too many Williamses.

The Broncos

Don’t want the drama Queen of San Diego!!! Don’t know if anyone saw last night on NFL Live but Kiper and McShay (and forget which one) had the Broncos taking S Earl Thomas from Texas! What do you all feel about that pick??

by KaliforniaTide on Mar 19, 2010 5:56 AM MDT reply actions

We would not get hurt by taking Thomas

Earl Thomas or Eric Berry

While I like Williams, I don’t think he projects well as a NT, I think he is really more suited to a DT in a 4-3 and I think he may be a bit undersized to be an effective NT in this scheme. I would say Berry or Thomas and then draft Cam Thomas in the 2nd round to play NT.

Haggan is moving to ILB

They looked at him for that slot last offseason, and from the comments by Ayers it looks very likely that they’ll move him in and consider other options for the OLB. Ayers will be taking more reps at that slot. We also have an unknown quality in Baraka Atkins. No word yet on Darrell Reid’s progress.

It all starts with the lines

by Doc Bear on Mar 19, 2010 11:18 AM MDT reply actions

Yeah, that's about it.

Mario had a few reps at ILB last year and he’ll probably be the one to replace Davis. I still hope we take a ILB in the draft somewhere along the line.
