Starting QB for 2010
I have noticed some controversy regarding who will start for the Denver Broncos this season at the QB position.I have a few thoughts, and thought I would share them...
As many of you know, I am an avid Kyle Orton supporter. That being said I also believe he will start this season barring injury. I won't provide with all the reason I support Kyle Orton, if you want details look at previous posts. Suffice it to say I believe he did well last year, and will continue to improve.
Now, as for do I believe Brady Quinn has a chance to take the job? I hate to say it but yes. He was a first round draft pick for a variety of reasons, and all those reasons still exist. He has tons of potential, and in a team with some talent, I believe he can be successful. Cleveland had very little talent, and traded away most of what they did have. Hopefully he will become an excellent QB, and in my opinion if he does not win the starting job, yet plays well when he does play, will be solid trade bait for a struggling team at the position in a year or 2.
Now the heart of the matter... Who will start? who should start? who is more talented? In my opinion K.O. has the upperhand by being familiar with the system, and his experience. I believe unless Quinn works very hard, and can be very familiar with the playbook prior to training camp, Orton will win the starting job unless he either gets hurt, or has a huge drop in play. As far as talent, I believe they are both talented young men, and solid quarterbacks, however I believe Quinn has the edge on talent. Which means he may be making a push for the position late 2010 but most likely 2011.
I don't care who starts, only that whoever is on the field gives us the greatest opportunity to win. Start Brady Quinn if he has a better chance, Start K.O. if he does... I am okay if McDaniels starts Brandstater if he is the one who will help us reach the playoffs. McDaniels seems to have an ego (IMO) and benching K.O. would make it appear that he felt the Cutler trade was a mistake. I don't think he wants to do that, however, he is also very intelligent (again IMO) and I honestly believe he will put the best player on the field, regardless of whether is makes him looks stupid. How many people, including some right here on MHR, says he was an idiot for benching Marsh and Sheff when the playoffs were still a possibility?
Give me 22 guys on the field, who all want to win, win as a team, and stomp the Raiders, and I will be a happy camper...

Being 'rational' is a philosophical doctrine holding that 'reason' is the source of knowledge and the arbiter of truth.
It would be illogical to believe Kyle Orton doesn’t hold the knowledge and fundamentals to start in the nfl or on the Denver broncos. He has proven he has the ability to start for two total different system orientated offenses, with the Bears and the Broncos. Kyle’s selection for the Bears was a bad pick for them as his skill-set doesn’t fit their scheme, i.e., run first and let the defense keep the game close. Kyle’s Purdue offense was the direct opposite of the Bears and his future with them was doomed from the start. McDaniels during the Cutler debacle already knew the tanglibles Kyle possessed that made him successful at Purdue could be used in in own system with proficiency. That’s something the Bears failed to realize and squandered their lifes saving on ‘franchise’ type quarterback (Cutler) who they figured could make them look good in a non-quarterback favorable system.
What has Kyle done since coming to Denver? Well in his first year at really being in a system more to his liking he threw for nearly 4000 yards, TD/INT ratio is +2/1 and his rating is nearly 90. Not bad in an intirely different system and scheme he was indocrinated in for 5 years, in a quarterback unfriendly system. Not too bad and something even McDaniels seems to be pleased with, because he did say he was starting in 2010. That shows me that the HC has confidence that Kyle can run this offense and be very effective in it. First thing that has to happen is to upgrade the OLine which has been addressed in some ways already with acquistions of McChesney, Fry, Seth and Batise. There will be more players brought in from the draft, we can all agree on that. The rookie (Moreno) runningback is not a rookie anymore and he will be expected to do a lot better than he did, plus we added 3 at that position, Arrington, Ball and Hall. Building an offense around your quarterback is the best way to success, along with having a strong defense that keeps you in the game. In all honesty with reasoning, we should be better this year with a year under the system.
Does that mean that Kyle Orton is automatically handed the keys to the starter? No. Kyle will have to ultimately make that decision in his own mind, we as fans can’t make it up for him. That would be illogical thinking if we or anybody else makes an assmption that Kyle will not be our starter and our FUTURE! He has to decide that and all we can do is wait and watch. Being stupid isn’t a God given talent, it is the life long negative attitude we have formed in our minds. It can be eleviated by knowledge and understanding, by taking the logical route in life, by having patience to perceive the truth. Kyle Orton is our starter and our future as far as I know. Until I have been told differently by someone more knowledgable and smarter than I am. I refuse to be stupid!
Oh yeah, Brady Quinn . . . I forgot he was even there…

A man does what he has to do, and sometimes it’s not what I believe he should do. There’s no reason to use up energy hating him for it. Shoot him if you have to, but don’t hate him.

Is KO our starting QB? At the moment, yes. Does he deserve to be? At the moment, yes. Does he need to improve on last year, yes. Will he improve this year?, my crystal ball says yes. Will he be the only person on the field?, no. Will the rest of the offense improve from last season, the ouija board spelled out yes. Does that assure we will make the playoffs?, my magic eight ball says, its possible. Will BradyQ help the team?, the rune stones say yes. Will BradyQ start?, the tarot cards say no. Luckily I’m not superstitious.

I'm sure McD has an ego
but I don’t think it will play in the decision of who to start at QB or any other postion for that matter.
Also, I believe Marshall was “injured” so couldn’t or wouldn’t play whether he was benched or not.
As for Scheffler his contribution to the team on the field did not outweigh his contribution or lack thereof in the locker room IMHO.
The QB position is set.
Haha
McD does have and ego, but most coaches do, I guess we could try and bring Favre out of retirement to humble him like he did Childress. I also agree the reason McD “benched” Marshall was because he wasn’t going to play anyways, so it was more of a symbolic move than anything else.
My emptiness says it doesn't care.
