Maybe this is why the Raiders are pursuing Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb?
ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting that Oakland quarterback JaMarcus Russell recently weighed in at 290 pounds. That’s a good weight for a tackle, but a very bad weight for a quarterback.
There was a previous report that Russell weighed 271 pounds. However, the fact that Oakland coach Tom Cable was reluctant to talk about Russell’s weight-loss progress at the NFL owners meetings this week, likely means Russell never weighed in at 271 pounds.
It was disclosed this week the Raiders are in hot pursuit of McNabb. Oakland wouldn’t be trying to acquire McNabb if it thought Russell, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2007 draft, was doing all the right things to reclaim his starting job.
I maintain that Russell’s biggest problem is his poor football fundamentals, but weighing 290 pounds is not doing Russell any favors.
