VOTE TO KEEP BRANDON MARSHALL [poll]
VOTE TO KEEP BRANDON MARSHALL [Poll]
Why trading Brandon Marshall now would be a mistake.
First things first a little background; Marshall reminds me of Lionel Taylor one of my favorite Bronco players from the early 60's because of his extraordinary ability to make those one handed receptions and going up high to snag passes in mid-air. There have been many good receivers don't get me wrong but Taylor was extraordinary and I put Marshall in that extraordinaire category. I suspect the majority of the MHR members have never heard of or seen Lionel Taylor play he was a Bronco from the early 60's. The first player with100 pass receptions in a single season in professional football. Many of the spectacular one handed catches were his specialty. He lead the league in receptions at least four times during his career, and Team MVP several times. Now Brandon Marshall has 100+ catches 3-straight seasons along with Wes Welker of the Colts and with one more 100+ receptions either could set or tie the standard for consecutive 100+ receptions in 4-straight seasons for NFL record books. Marshall set a single game record with 21 catches against the Colts in 2009 breaking T.O's nine year old record set in 2001, said another way extraordinary - "freak or beast" unstoppable. Strange he has not lead the league in receptions but I see him leading the league this year if he stays with the Broncos. As a Bronco's fan I'm rooting for Marshall to remain in Orange & Blue. We had the "3 Omigos", "Ed McCaffrey, and Rod Smith " to name a few but none are comparable to Brandon Marshall - "The Beast." Marshall is not a one-year wonder he is a proven talent and not replaceable. Look at the many 1st and 2nd round draft picks who have come and gone or who are just ordinary in the NFL. The success rate is not very good when drafting WR’s in the first two rounds. I think less than 30% met or exceed their expectations as a high draft pick. Ask Shanahan about drafting receivers in the first two rounds.
When the CBA expires in 2011 teams will have no salary cap restrictions. Without the agreement Marshall will still be the property of the Denver Broncos through 2011 and the bidding war for his talent will reach extraordinary levels for the 2012 season. I believe we have to use the leverage so Broncos can receive what Marshall’s really worth if Broncos decides to trade him. We should not settle for anything less than #1 pick anything less will set the franchise back trying to replace him. I believe Marshall will be worth more next season and I believe we can put another tag on him. Who knows maybe by next season there could be a change of heart on both sides it's worth the extra effort to keep the Beast. Yes, it’s easy to say trade him get rid of him but, I say let’s put forth that extraordinary effort and keep Brandon Marshall and if we have to hire a firm to help Brandon with his issue’s it’s the right thing to do Coach McDaniels.
Dez Bryant looks to be a another big time WR but, the road he’s on suggest otherwise a potential problem how many more workouts will he cancel or postpone? I see another repeat in long contract delays and reporting late to TC. He's not a proven player yet in the NFL e.g. look what took place with SF 49ers last season with Michael Crabtree a hold-out and finally receiving top 5 salary, and for what 48 catches and 625 yards not exactly top 5 value. Look at what happen with Cleveland and Braylon Edwards supposedly the best receiver coming out of college in years and he was a bust in Cleveland he was the 3rd player taken in 2005.
Here’s the biggest reason we need to keep Brandon. Was Eddie Royal a one year wonder? If we lose Brandon Marshall and Eddie Royal repeats his performance from the 2009 season, the Broncos offense will be in big trouble. I believe in 2nd chances and I know Marshall has had more than his share but the fact is he’s young and in-mature person who needs help and understanding. Think back to the 2008 season when the combine numbers for Royal & Marshall 195 catches and 2,345 yards. Last season: 128 catches and 1,465 yards 16% drop-off way too much. I keep asking myself if Eddie Royal was one year wonder going in the opposite direction when comparing him to Sean Jackson of the Eagles I’m hoping not. I seriously doubt Royal and Gaffney could match even the 128 catch total this coming season if Brandon Marshall is not on the team. We need to keep our 1-play-maker in Orange & Blue and that is Brandon Marshall. Not a time to give up on an extraordinary talent that’s taken 46 years to find. This is a good time to give that extraordinary effort to help Marshall and show support for him. After watching the movie "Blindside" I feel the Bronco's community should reach out and give Brandon Marshall that helping hand one last time because he is an extraordinary player the likes of whom we might not see again. It’s been 11-years since we last rooted for Terrell Davis the last extraordinary player. In fact there’s only three I put in that offensive category; Taylor, Elway, and Davis.
I vote to keep Brandon Marshall and tie up his services for the next 3 to 5-years with a new contract with clauses to protect the investment and let him keep doing the thing he does best creating excitement on the football field. It’s a fact the Broncos are better team with Marshall than without him I can't mention that enough. I can't imagine going for another 10-years looking for that elusive #1 receiver. In the 50 years I've been a Bronco's fan the Lionel Taylor, Rod Smith and Brandon Marshall only come along once or twice in a life time. How long have we waited and to think Shanahan drafted him in the 4th round as the 119th player. I remember the comment Champ Bailey made about Marshall in his first training camp "how did he last till the 4th round" "he's a freak player." Actually, we are lucky to have him I know there will be many fans in total disagreement but it's just another view point from a Bronco's fan who has watched players come and go through Denver to become super stars with other teams. I think Brandon Marshall and his agent must realize how other teams view him. Hopefully, Brandon Marshall can now see how important the Broncos are to his career and how important Marshall is to the Broncos success.
Some info: 2005 to 2009 had 19 first and 23 second round picks at WR:
Brandon Marshall #119th 4th round pick career 307 receptions avg. 82 3,710 yards [ 4 seasons]
Chad Ochocino 36th overall 2nd round pick; 684 receptions avg. 76 9,952 yards [9 seasons]
Steve Smith 74th overall 3rd round pick; 574 receptions avg. 64 8,330 yards [9 seasons]
Braylon Edwards 3rd overall first round pick; 273 receptions avg. 45 4,238 yards [6 seasons]
Wes Welker CFA 442 receptions avg. 74 4,809 yards [6 seasons]
Ted Ginn-jr 9th overall first round pick; 118 receptions avg. 39 1,664 yards [3 seasons]
Steve Smith* 51st overall second round pick; 172 receptions avg. 57 1,857 yards [3 seasons]
Calvin Johnson 2nd overall first round pick; 193 receptions avg. 64 3,071 yards [3 seasons]
Troy Williamson 7th overall first round pick; 87 receptions avg. 29 1,131 yards [4 seasons]
Mike Williams 10th overall first round pick; 37 receptions avg. 17 449 yards [4 seasons]
Darius Heyward-Bey 7th overall first round pick; 9 receptions 124 yards [first season]
Eric Crabtree 10th overall first round pick; 48 receptions 625 yards [first season]
Rod Smith CFA retired after 13 seasons; 849 avg. 65 receptions 11,389 yards
If trading is the final decision Broncos make here's a trade I think is fair: Brandon Marshall to Seahawks for their #6 pick + 4th round and swap our #11 pick for Seattle's 14th.

Based on what other teams seem willing to offer at this point
we should keep him and sign him to a deal with as little guaranteed money as he will possibly let us.
but if someone offers something good, trade him.

Goodbye BM...it's been interesting? Not really!
Grow up!
"Attitude reflects Leadership" Hogblog...aka KSM
He has already shown a pattern
of among other things just being kinda of a pouter, no matter how good a player he is. Pouters are just going to be disruptive if things aren’t going their way. And a 2.5 million dollar tender isn’t going to go Marshall’s way. I also just see Brandon as a guy who if it isn’t one thing with him it will be another, just my opinion.
As a Chargers fan I hope the Broncos trade him even for a #1
The odds of finding a comparable talent equate to me winning betting about 5 numbers on a roulette wheel. Good Luck
IMO
I tend to agree
that keeping him would be great if he will sign a contract that gives him big bucks only if he performs, stays out of trouble, and plays every game. I don’t want him to be able to say he has an injury when he doesn’t just so he can sit out of practice. However, there is no way he’ll sign such a deal, given his history of mistrust with the Broncos medical staff. He’ll always say they are pushing him too hard to play, with no concern for his health.

Que sera sera.
At this point I don’t care. I trust the Broncos will make the best decision they can given the circumstances. If that means keeping him, so be it. If that means trading him, they will get the value they think they can get for him and we are free of his antics.

It's not up to me.
If McD chooses to trade I can get behind that if we get what you mentioned above. Just for the record though I think he will take a high 2nd and that to me isn’t enough. I’m not in the lockrroom with him though. Sharpe was an ass too and we all loved him.
Sharpe didn't have legal issues that could have gotten him suspended for 8 games at any time
nor was he the cancer that Marshall is

Entirely depends on 1) the offer and 2)..
what Mashall truly wants. The first I can judge when I hear the offer; I’m not up for just getting rid of him for less than reasonable value, and HE IS A VERY GOOD PLAYER. The second portion, ie what Marshall truly wants, is inside Marshall himself, and I can’t judge it. I can say this….. IF his problems stem from the DWill tragedy, I want what’s best for Marshall. If NOT and he still wants out, I think it is best for the team if we get a good offer. If he truly wants to stay, we should be able to get a deal done. I am not of the belief that McD is trying to intentionally or unintentionally drive him away.

I voted other because I'm still kind of undecided
This is a player who puts up great numbers, sure, but after he got his 100 catches, seemed to mail it in. He dropped at least 3 easy passes in the Philly game, and then didn’t want to practice because it was too cold before the KC game. That was a slap in the face to each and every one of his teammates. Who knows if his own teammates even want him back?
I think I’m leaning towards letting him go for whatever we can get.
It takes neither courage nor intelligence to cheer for a team only when that team wins. The true test of a fan's mettle is the same as it is for a player: Were you there when you were needed?
aka Solace
I'd like to keep him
But I’m not sure if that will happen. If we’re not going to give him an offer that he wants, then trade him now so we can get something ouf of him, otherwise, he’ll walk next year and we won’t get any compensation for him.
He’s saying the right things to try and turn this situation around. I don’t think he’ll be a distraction to the team if he gets paid. All his shennanigans last year were because he felt he wasn’t getting paid enough for his value. Fine, there’s a going rate for receivers of his caliber, so pay him. I think he’s matured enough that his off the field antics will not be an issue. A lot of that stuff happened early in his career and the frequency of those occurrances had diminished exponentially over time, i.e. they’re getting fewer and farther between. He’s engaged to be married so hoepfully that’ll ground him a little more. I hope he has a kid because there’s nothing is more humbling than realizing that something so fragile and defenseless depends on you to take care of it.
I think it could also be good for McDaniels because it’ll show that he’s not the hard assed-doesn’t put up with anything-I’m the boss-cross me and you’ll regret it-it’s my way or the highway-type of coach. Coache’s need to command respect and authority, but they also need to show compassion and leniency.
GO BRONCOS!!!
Your right........
….throwing a childish temper tantrum at an NFL practice and having veterans request you be benched for a season finale is a definite indication of maturing.
For the third year in a row Denver fans are left hoping that Marshall will mature. Here’s hoping we don’t get to find out first hand the same disappointment we’ve had the previous two.

Counting down the minutes until he's traded
Literally.
No posession WR in the NFL is worth more than $7-8 million a year and Marshall is looking for much more than that.
You want that kind of money, you’d better be three things 1) A gamebreaker. Marshall has only cracked th Top-40 for plays longer than 20 yards once; this year he was 39th. His average of 11.1 yards per catch puts him in the company of Dallas Clark and Wes Welker, two other possession recievers. 2) Score TDs. Only once in his career has he had double digit TDs, this year with 10. 3) Reliable. For the third straight year in a row Marshall was Top-5 in drops. Of course, anyone knowing his off-field issues knows he’s an unreliable person; begging the question can he ever become reliable on the field when he’s not personally?
100 catches proves nothing more than Marshall has been target more than anyone the last three years. Ironically with Orton he had his best season. First time in his career he wasn’t targeted 200+ times. Less drops, more TDs, etc…..yet, I would still trade him at a moments notice. It would be very hard for any NFL team to justify making Marshall a top paid WR, when his “impressive” production is simply due to a vast quantity of opportunities. Nothing else about his production is “Top-5”. More so investing that amount of money in such a risky asset long term is quite a leap of faith. Nothing about Marshall’s history, production and personality gives me confidence in him as a long-term asset.

Well said.
Yesterday, someone on MHR stated that Marshall was the best receiver in the NFL. Not the best possession receiver, not the best young receiver. Just the best receiver. This kind of blew my mind, because….
Randy Moss
Reggie Wayne
Andre Johnson
Larry Fitzgerald
Greg Jennings
Wes Welker
All seem better to me without any kind of argument whatsoever. And then you go down to those who are probably better, although somebody who’s good with words might try to convince you otherwise:
Santonio Holmes
Miles Austin
Donald Driver
DeSean Jackson
Sidney Rice
Vincent Jackson
Calvin Johnson
And then you get to people who are a wash with B-Marsh in terms of talent and production
Chad Ochocinco (old version)
Steve Smith (New York version)
Anquan Boldin
Marques Colston
Roddy White
Robert Meacham
Hines Ward
Derrick Mason
And then you ask how many other wideouts looks like they could be pretty good possession receivers with a few more reps. And you see that you could probably grab those guys for $0.25 on the dollar. Man, oh man, does a first-round pick look like highway robbery for Marshall.
Brandon Marshall is undisputably a 5 star elite athlete with a 2 1/2 star attitude.
Marshall could be the driving force on the Broncos team with an attitude of team first and selflessness. I don’t know if Brandon is capable of that in his heart. Giving him a huge contract could be the deciding factor and then again it could lead to further disruption of the team. One side of me wants Brandon to get the cash and play to win where the other side of me wants to move on and restructure the team with him. Only time will tell.
I view investing money in Brandon
like investing money in beachfront property in Somalia.
Sure it’s the beach, but who cares when you’re guaranteed to overpay for it and history suggests it’ll all go to hell sooner or later.
"You can make mistakes, but you are not a failure until you blame others for those mistakes." -John Wooden
Andre and Fitz are the only receivers that are hands down better than BM....
The others you could make an argument for, but most are aging, and don’t have much time left. Marshall is an elite talent (by no means the best in the league, but elite all the same) who is just now entering his prime. He’s absolutely a top 10 receiver, and in my opinion he’s easily top 5, with a lot more years ahead of him than the rest I’d put on that list.
With that being said, if we rid ourselves of him I wouldn’t be overly disappointed. I don’t want to lose him for pennies on the dollar (a first round pick is pennies on the dollar), but I do think there’s a silver lining if he’s not around next year.

We will see what happens
I’d like to keep Brandon I really would but I would also like to hear what Brian Dawkins Champ Bailey and the rest of the Locker Room Leadership have to say! If they don’t want the lad then I don’t either! Last season it was about Jay Cutler this season its about Brandon Marshall. I can’t wait for an off season where the only thing I hear is “The DENVER BRONCOS…” To me it speaks volumes about Brandon when all is quiet on the mile high front and he has to have a PR firm put his name back in the headlines. Let me hear BDawk and Champ’s opinions and then I will give you my answer on him staying!
Davis and Sharpe to the Hall!

Great point about the team leaders...
Since McD did ask the team leaders about the DC change, I would bet the house that McD ‘knows’ the feeling of the locker room.
Just my thoughts:
I’m undecided.
Still, I think BMarsh’s legal problems are quietly going away. His last arrest was very nearly 13 months ago. What he’s been since then is simply a Diva Wide-Receiver, but there are plenty of those out there. He certainly puts up the numbers, and his Diva-like behavior might be cured (or, at least, subdued) by a decent payday.
I’d like to see the Broncos draw him up a nice contract that has fat incentives for staying out of trouble. If he won’t sign something like that, then we should cut him loose.
A talent like that is hard to replace but, in the long run, it might be better for both sides if neither side will agree on his worth as a player.

I'm with you
If he can shape up and care about the team (which he has proven he can do – that list of team and personal goals that he submitted to Roger Goodell last season…. He just needs to maintain that mentality game to game as well throughout the season.
If he would realize the business aspect of what a RISK he poses to any team, given his history, I’m sure he would not mind a contract with said stipulations.
Maybe he truly would like to retire a Bronco – that’s the biggest thing to me, as a fan, I want the players on the Broncos to be glad to be Broncos – 100%, not just if the money’s good. Anyway, a lot of things’d be nice if we’re going into that subject LoL.
First team to three consecutive SB wins!!!! and then some, right? I think four and someone else oughtta have a 'fair' shot ( =

Rod Smith
As Rod Smith said of BM early in his career – if he can keep his nose clean he could be a game changer, one of the best.
Like others, I’ve grown weary of Marshall’s antics at times but he frankly, bluntly brings another dimension to our offense that we need. While Orton will continue to improve it will be a substantial improvement with BM as opposed to missing BM.
While I’m only going off my gut on this, I think BM will flourish under McDaniels. I know there were rough spots. But again, just my gut.
We need BM. BM needs the Broncos. Great offense for him.

This
^^ +1
As I’ve said several times, it would be a shame if the team that stood by Marshall through thick and thin, and helped him grow as a player and a man, was not the same team to reap the rewards of an at-long-last matured Brandon Marshall. I want him here. If he stays and becomes the guy we all want him to be, he can prove to the world he has overcome his past. If he goes elsewhere, I wouldn’t harbor any ill will, but it will be a real shame.
"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.

This situation is not a simple thing.
I don’t think that saying trade him or keep him can really characterize the reality of this situation. The problem seems to be whether retaining Marshall or not is going to make the Broncos as a team better. If we can improve by trading him then I say do it. However if we can’t trade him for any type of equal value then I would say keep him around, but only if he is viewed within the locker room as an asset. The bottom line for me is simply to do what is best for the Denver Broncos and not the selfish individuals who can’t seem to see how blessed they are to be playing football for a living.

I voted trade him just for the mere sanity of the team.
Brandon could become a saint and lead the team to glory I really believe that, but he hasn’t shown he wants to do that yet.
Hard to say...
I really want a happy BM back next year, but I don’t see it. I also would not give him up for nothing. Trading him for a 2nd is, in my mind, completely asinine!! Like Cutler, he has the ability to be the best in the league in the next few years, but they’ve both gotta get their act together.
I agree bfree2bronc
We as fans talk about wanting to have a “star” player, but the real question which seems to be still unanswered is does Marshall truly want to be a “team” player, I think all players have egos to different extents, but the fact is that I believe Marshall can’t and won’t ever be able to take the focus off of him and be a team leader and not a team disrupter, unfortunately that’s just how some players make up is no matter how much we as fans want to or believe they can/will change.
