Hot Tub Time Machine - What could/could not have been....

Over the weekend, I went and saw "Hot Tub Time Machine" (the movie where four jokers go back to 1986 through the magic of a... ahem).  As it was starting I leaned over to my buddy, a Packers fan, and said "1986?  The Broncos are goin' to the Superbowl!"  Of course I didn't actually think that they'd reference it.  Shock and amazement, the Broncos and The Drive actually play a moderately important role in the movie!   Of course if you haven't seen the movie and don't want the Bronco-ness spoiled you should stop reading now.  In fact, stop reading now and go watch the movie than resume reading after the jump.  It's a darn funny movie and it has a little Bronco goodness in it.... win win... kinda...

In the movie a couple of the jokers are in a bar and they look up and lo and behold it's the Cleveland/Denver game - The Drive on TV. Nevermind the fact that The Drive took place in January of 1987 and not in 1986....  but hey who pays attention to that stuff anyway.  One of the jokers, played wonderfully by the Daily Show's Rob Corddry decides to use his knowledge of the game for financial gain and starts betting with others in the bar about the outcome.  However, because they altered the past during their visit, things don't go as they did back in Cleveland on that fateful day. First, the pass that Elway scores on is to Sammy Winder and not Marc Jackson... Second, because of an errant squirrel Sammy doesn't catch the ball and the Browns go on to Pasadena to play the Giants in SB XXI... Lastly, the footage they have of Sammy dropping the ball is embarrassingly so not footage of a Bronco (kind of looked like a Cornhusker - White helmet and red jersey).

What was and what could have been if that had happened?

Say the Broncos lost "The Drive" and the Browns went on to SB XXI as the movie suggests... Would you be comfortable giving up The Drive to erase the first of 3 embarrassing SB losses? (20-39)  Would the Browns have fared better against the Giants that year than we did?  Would Elway's rep have been tarnished to a point where later in his career he'd have been shipped (as though getting schellacked in the SB didn't tarnish it at that point...)  Without the Drive there would have been no embarrassing defeat in Pasadena.  What other things would be different?

Personally, I'm glad it all worked out the way it did.  The Drive is a classic...  Even though we had our hearts ripped out in crushing losses in the SB, it was all worth it when we finally won against Green Bay (at least that was what I told my Packer fan buddy....).  The win against the Falcons was pretty awesome too...
