Broncos extend Qualifying Offers to five players, Elvis Dumervil gets 1st/3rd Round Tender

The Denver Broncos have tendered qualifying offers to five players who will be restricted free agents at the start of the 2010 league year on Friday.

Outside linebacker/defensive end Elvis Dumervil was tendered with a first and third-round draft choice while guard Chris Kuper, wide receiver Brandon Marshall and quarterback Kyle Orton each were tendered with a first-round draft choice. Tight end Tony Scheffler was given an original round tender (second round).

"Tendering these restricted free agents was a step we took to solidify our roster during these uncertain times with a group of players who are valued a great deal by the Broncos," General Manager Brian Xanders said. "Our ultimate goal as an organization remains to acquire and keep players who give us the best chance to win.

"These are all high-quality football players, and we look forward to their contributions during the 2010 season and beyond."

This gives the Broncos

a good chance to get exactly what they want in exchange for Marshall. I hope we keep him though.

THIS ... if I were BM I'd feel disrespected. If I were a team in need of a WR I'd jump at the near sure thing that BM is and give up the 1st rounder.

Are they really going to play it cheap and push Marshall into a corner? He’s an uppity kid with tremendous talent, who’s been trying to be humble… McX is trying to make a point here. I strongly disagree with this move.

I understand that BM got himself into this mess or I’d really be upset. Still think it’s the wrong way to handle this.

BTW I get tired of hearing about the poor economy. I’m making more money than I ever have and so is the NFL. The owners may be trying to make a statement here in the midst of the negotiations… hopefully that’ll keep certain players from taking offense. In this case though. …they couldn’t add the third rounder in there for a guy with three 100 catch seasons in a row? Sounds foolish.

I still have to wonder

if this is not a case of letting the other teams define what fair market value is for these 5, which Denver will then turn around and match.

Makes sense in light of a probable no CBA in 2010 and no football in 2011.

by Brian Shrout on Mar 3, 2010 2:16 PM MST reply actions

From a business sense

that may be exactly what is going on. Without a new labor contract in place, in addition to the economy still going nowhere, owners may not be willing to extent themselves very far monetarily at this point without some sort of indirect guidance. This will help to see exactly how other teams value the tendered players if at all.

Marshall

If Denver was serious about keeping marshall I’d think they’d put a 1st and 3rd but this sounds like “Lets Make a Deal!!!”

on the other hand,

If you REALLY think about it, with this deep of a draft are ANY teams willing to give up a first? I mean Marshall is GREAT! as a Denver WR, but…..Most teams that MIGHT give up a first already have their good WR situation…..I think tendering a 1st is exactly the right move, either we get bryant…..two great 1st rounders, or we end up matching or beating whatever else is offered.

Agree

About it being a great move. Just for the fact that it brings more teams to the table. If I were another team I’d rather have Marshall than the far majority of players in the draft and I probably could pay him the same amount of money.

It brings more teams,

and it gives us a chance to pay the lowest possible amount, think of it like bartering. We can match what ever is offered if we want.. if the price goes too high and what is offered in return is too good to refuse given Marshall’s history then we pull the trigger.

Seems like the Broncos hold all the cards in this situation.

by HorseStance on Mar 3, 2010 2:55 PM MST up reply actions

Disagree

Brandon Marshall’s proven skill trumps ANY college prospect period.

Because they’re prospect.

Its like if I told you hey I’ll give you $500,000 or you could flip a coin for $750,000.

What would you do? And honestly the odds of a player coming out of College and being 30% better than Brandon Marshall is probably alot more than 2:1.

Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?

Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?

by ChristianL on Mar 3, 2010 4:49 PM MST up reply actions

right but........

A. I won’t argue against his proven skill…..but when clutch time came, where was marshall? Wearing his fumbleMits (yes inc pass mits but I like my other term better)

B. Also, you are right that not many players come out in their rookie year as Marshall caliber…..but I can see plenty that have that much or greater potential, with more class. A player becomes unruly when he is allowed to get that way. McD would be able (Most likely) to keep a players Acumen at a higher level than Marshal’s.

C. I am stealing this point but its a valid one…….now we can see where other teams are going to set the BAR on him….and then tell him “this is what you are worth to them….here is what we are going to give you.”

So overall I don’t see any other way around it than…..this is a great decision.

Looks like there could be a lot of 1-year contracts out there with the whole CBA thing still up in the air.

I get the feeling that the tenders were to keep the players in place, while deals were being worked out — a process which has been delayed and complicated by the whole CBA situation.

Okay... I answered my own question.

Here is what rotoworld.com had to say:

The Broncos will not tender DL Le Kevin Smith, making him an unrestricted free agent.
“The Kevin” is free to sign with the highest bidder at 12AM ET Thursday night. The Broncos thought they had a potential five-technique starter when they acquired Smith (and a seventh-rounder) for a fifth-round pick from the Pats last August. Instead, Smith was a non-factor and Denver got swindled. Mar. 3 – 5:13 pm est.

So… RW thinks that Hoodie Sr. “swindled” Hoodie Jr. … interesting…

I'm talking about if you're Baltimore

You gotta give him a contract if you’re going to get him… my point was what possible incentive does another team have to offer more than a 1st? They just need to negotiate with Bmarsh and offer enough so that the Broncos don’t match

So forgive my ignorance...

But is this correct?
So some team tenders a contract to BMarsh (who must accept the tender). At this point the Broncos either match the offer or lose BMarsh in favor of a first round pick. If Denver does match the offer, then Marshall becomes a Bronco and no other team can tender an offer, correct? Marshall is a Bronco at the terms established, unless they trade him at that contract level. So the ball is really in Marshall’s court (or hands, I should say, to be metaphorically apt), and he only gets one shot to leave via free agency, and so the more suitors who aren’t scared off by the collateral price tag the better for him, right?
The only way the tender level established by the Broncos bears on Marshall’s salary is if nobody tenders an offer, so I would hope that Brandon is happy with McX’s decision as it makes it less likely that he’ll have to settle for a limited contract with the Broncs.
This doesn’t mean that the Broncos are any more likely to lose Marshall, necessarily, though it does open the door to more interest, which could generate more sign-and-trade opportunities. I think that McX decided that the market for Marshall wasn’t likely to be all that lively at a first and a third, and that they can live with the prospect of losing Marshall for a first (all of which I agree with). Makes sense to me—unless I’m missing something, which is definitely possible…

The only thing you got wrong

From what I understand is that Marshall doesn’t have to accept a tender from another team. He is free to negotiate his best deal but if Denver matches his contract from the other team then he is a Denver Bronco.

Therefore

A team might have a signed contract and still make a trade because they don’t want Denver to match their offer.

This was the second move that had me a little surprised. There may be a method to this alleged madness.

Most people (specifically, here, at MHR) have predicted more than just a first round tender for Marshall’s services. I, personally, was surprised at how soon Wiegman was let go. Since Wiegman was cut, and didn’t bow out on his own, I would have to assume that McD already had a plan in place as to his replacement. In Marshall’s case, Maybe a trading partner has already been identified.

I can’t wait to see how this plays out.

how do you guys think B marsh's tender compare to Ray Edwards?

Both are players that are fairly highly valued, possibly not living up to their potential, asking for expensive contracts, have had problems in the past, and are young.
Both get 1st round tenders, even though a lot of people expected 1st and 3rd for both.
I know they play completely different positions, but DE is highly valued, and after his monster performance in the playoffs, he could be in high demand.

I am curious to see what happens with Edwards
