Horse Tracks - 3/30/10 - Vacation Cometh

Horse_tracks_new_logo_medium

Good Morning Broncos Country.  I have to admit, my mind is elsewhere.  In a couple days I will be loading up the family truckster and heading south on the parenting pilgrimage known as DisneyWorld.  Sure, for most the 15+ hour drive would be, well, a drag.  I am actually looking forward to it in a twisted, morbid sort of way - perhaps I like self-mutilation.  No, I think giving my girls a chance to see just how BIG this wonderful country of ours actually is - while spending quality time in close quarters - is a must.  That, and dozens of DVD's, coloring books, snacks, drinks and air-freshener.   Perhaps the best part - to me anyway - is the fact there will be a shuttle launch on April 5th.  It has always been on my bucket-list to see a launch, but with the program due to be halted this year I was beginning to think it would never happen.  Luck, as it turns out, might be on my side.  If anyone knows a secret place to check it out, let me know.  Anyway, I'll be doing my best to keep up with the day-to-day here on MHR, but if I seem distant, well, it is because I will be.  I have the best team in blogging backing me up, so I know MHR won't slip.  On to the Tracks!

2010 NFL Draft Preview: Wide Receiver
In the weeks leading up to the 2010 NFL Draft, DenverBroncos.com will take a look at the draft prospects position by position.

Bradford strengthens grip on NFL draft's top slot with impressive workout - The Denver Post
It wasn't difficult to talk to somebody who attended Sam Bradford's workout Monday in Norman, Okla., because many of the NFL's power brokers and personnel executives made their way to the 63-pass affair.

Raiders in hot pursuit of QB McNabb - The Denver Post
Philadelphia stalwart Donovan McNabb will wear the black and silver of the Oakland Raiders next season if the teams can finalize a deal that is nearly in place, according to ESPN.

Star-divide

No McNabb deal? Let’s just wait and see | National Football Post
Despite last week’s breathless anticipation about a pending trade of Donovan McNabb by the Eagles, we can all back away, at least for the moment. Nothing to see here. Step away from the scene.

Landing an internship in sports | National Football Post
If you want to work in sports, the best way to start is by landing an internship. It’s a productive path: Six interns who worked for me went on to careers in sports.

Tight end fight night | National Football Post
Competition level, production, postseason workouts and injury concerns all seem to play a major role every year when evaluating prospects for the NFL Draft. Today, the National Football Post takes a look at two of the nation’s top tight ends -- Oklahoma’s Jermaine Gresham and Arizona’s Rob Gronkowski -- and breaks them down to determine who has the better NFL potential.

Did everyone over-hype Sam Bradford's workout? | National Football Post
It was hard not to notice the impact of Sam Bradford’s pro day Monday down in Norman, Okla. — or the post-workout hype that surrounded this event like the opening night of the NFL Draft.

Source: Tuihalamaka visits Ravens | National Football Post
University of Arizona linebacker Vuna Tuihalamaka visited the Baltimore Ravens on Monday.

Raiders in the lead for McNabb trade? | National Football Post
Is veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb bound for the Oakland Raiders?

Steve Smith would like Panthers to find a No. 1 receiver | National Football Post
The Carolina Panthers wide receiver has gone from saying that the team needs to go out and find a complementary wide receiver for him to something else. He says the Panthers need to find someone to replace him in his role as a No. 1 and let him be the "other guy."

Source: Eagles, Cardinals to work out Mitchell | National Football Post
Arizona Wildcats defensive tackle Earl Mitchell has upcoming workouts scheduled with the Philadelphia Eagles and Arizona Cardinals, according to a league source.

Bucs holding out hope on Crowell, Bradley | National Football Post
At least the budget-minded Tampa Bay Buccaneers didn’t chase Angelo Crowell with a fistful of cash this time around.

Bradford shoulders pressure, is near perfect with passes in workout
After a record-setting college career that landed Sam Bradford a Heisman Trophy, one giant question loomed over his prospects of becoming the No. 1 overall pick in next month's NFL draft.

No more rookie excuses: This group must produce results in 2010
While sitting with New York Giants coach Tom Coughlin at the NFL Annual Meeting last week, I asked him about his young receivers' emergence last season and, based on what he has seen of them, if he believes they'll continue to improve. For the most part, Coughlin gave the stock answer of, "There's a long way to go; they're not as refined as they should be," but they'll get better.

Weaver wants McNabb to remain in Philadelphia - NFL.com
At this point, who knows what will happen with Donovan McNabb and whether or not the Eagles will trade him? But if the quarterback does indeed prefer to remain in Philadelphia, it doesn’t hurt to have some of his teammates speak up in support.

If we tell you the secret places, they won't be secret anymore!

:) Seriously, though, if you are going to see a shuttle launch, as long as you get on the coast somewhere close to the Cape (Titusville, Cocoa, Cocoa Beach, Port St. John, etc.) you will be good. You go there thinking you’ll witness something that everyone should get a chance to see, maybe like Old Faithful or something of that nature, but you come away with a sense of awe that you wouldn’t have expected. You’ll know what I mean when you feel it. Yup, feel it. From miles away. And a night launch is whole other ball of wax. Imagine sunrise happening in about half a second. Make sure you tune the radio to a station that is covering the launch and listen to what they are saying. The altitudes and speeds that it hits in such short amounts of time are amazing. Hopefully someone will come along with a good location to head to, though.

Enjoy Disney. You picked both a good and bad time to go. Good because it can quickly become The Sweatiest Place on Earth in summer and the forecast for the next week or so is pretty good (only hitting about 80 over the weekend with unseasonably cool lows in the upper-50’s), but bad because it’s spring break (long lines).

I saw a shuttle launch, totally by accident, from Orlando.

I’ve always wanted to see a shuttle launch, so for me, seeing it was the highlight of our family vacation in Orlando. We flew into Tampa, stayed the night, then drove a rental car to Orlando the next day. Just as we were entering Orlando, the freeway became a parking lot, so we switched the radio to AM for any traffic information. The station that scanned first was talking about a shuttle launch, so we listened, and just after the countdown to liftoff, we saw it going up. All the way from Orlando! The amazing thing is that if it weren’t for the traffic jam, we would have missed it completely because it turned out our exit was the next one up.

Shuttle Launch

If you are going to Kennedy Space Center for the shuttle launch, they have tours of course, but also check out the following in nearby Cocoa Beach (where I Dream of Jeannie was filmed):

Ron Jon’s and neighboring Cocoa Beach Surf Club for dazzling beach wares (a tourist must), as well as the nearby discount beach shops

Cocoa Beach Pier for some quality beach time

Fish House for good food and low prices (corner of A1A and Route 520

Bizzarro Pizza (a local chain of good pizza) and

Harvey’s for fresh orange juice by the jug and related citrus products on A1A near Ron Jon’s.

Its a nice day trip from Orlando.

Have a nice trip.

Snowing up here this morning

Florida sounds happy. Have a fantastic time!

"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.

McNabb will make them harder to beat

he beat us last year and he is not Russell. of course, even Russell got wins over last all too feequently. this move will make Oaklland better, unfortunately for us (not calling them Faiders because fading became our specialty last 2 years)

by si_ice on Mar 30, 2010 8:33 AM MDT via mobile reply actions

agree...

McNabb could make the Raiders a mediocre team rather than a bad one. And I actually like McNabb, so might have to give them some respect… well, maybe not ;-)

Disney Tips

If you’re going to the parks on Easter Sunday get there as early as you can. All the parks get packed on Easter Sunday and have been known to reach full capacity. Your best bet is on this day to go to Epcot because it’s a pretty big park and can spread out the crowds a little better.

If there is a wait for an attraction longer than 40 minutes get a fastpass or make a note to do that ride in the early morning. The major attractions like Dumbo and Peter Pan are best done right as Magic Kingdom opens. Depending on how old your kids are and what kind of thrill junkies your family is there’s also some great thrill rides especially Tower of Terror and Rock N’ Roller Coaster.

Of course my favorite ride is in Magic Kingdom. What else would it be for someone named RMT than Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.

Have fun.

McNab and the Faders

Can you imagine being McNab, coming from a Super Bowl contender to the Raiders? As long as Mathusla is in charge of that team we have no long term worries. At best the Faders can only be a “flash in the pan”.

About the Launch

I saw one by accident while outside of Gainesville in August. I’m not sure how the visibility is from Orlando, but I do imagine you can see it. While we were in G-ville it was amazing how the ENTIRE eastern horizon looked like it was day time. The one thing I can say is it’s way more beautiful to see, and photograph with a body of water between you and the launch. I guess it just all depends whether or not you’re planning on going to launch site or watching it from a distance. Have fun!

by JALefor on Mar 30, 2010 10:15 AM MDT reply actions

Gainesville is pretty far from the cape...

so imagine how it is up close. :) You can see it from Orlando just fine, but if you drive the 30-45 minutes to the coast, you can feel it.

I wonder what McNabb must have done to Reid

to make him trade him to the Raiders?

Enjoy the trip, John.

Make sure that if you go to McDonalds, you don’t leave the bags on the floor of your hotel room. From what I’ve heard, they make their bags much more slippery in Orlando than they do elsewhere. We wouldn’t want you to slip on one and put your hand through a television or anything like that.

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.
