Mile High Report 2010 Free Agency Open Thread #2

Look right here for the latest news and info on the Bronco's Free Agency moves, as well as an up-to-date front page recap as we go along.

  • San Francisco offensive tackle Tony Pashos, Miami cornerback Nathan Jones will vist the Broncos later today

  • According to league source, Eagles free agent pass rusher Jason Babin on radar of Redskins, Broncos and Jaguars.  Redskins apparently serious.

  • Rumor from a league source: Brandon Marshall, who's not expected to be bid on by Ravens, is of interest to the Seahawks.

  • Ravens' FA defensive lineman Justin Bannan to visit Broncos, they are setting something up with DE Dwan Edwards, per source.

  • Cleveland Browns free agent offensive lineman Rex Hadnot to visit the Denver Broncos later today, per a league source.

  • Chargers get a 2011 third-round pick that turns to a second-round pick based on Antonio Cromartie's play time and the Jets performance.
  • Lions will acquire DT Corey Williams in trade.
  • Would Jake Delhomme tickle your fancy?  Well, he's been released, so maybe we could consider him for a Simms replacement. Since he is still owed $12.7 mil by the Panthers, maybe we get him for a freebie?
  •  Chargers release NT Jamal Williams.  Interested?
  • DB Dunta Robinson headed to Atlanta?
  • Michael Lombardi of NFP says the Bears could be the early leaders for Julius Peppers.  And it is confirmed, Bears get first shot at Peppers...
  •  LB Carlos Dansby  will be visiting with the Dolphins.  Didn't take long for them to take the lead there...
  •  Also, be absolutely sure to add John Bena's MileHighReport Twitter if you aren't following him already.  And since John has to sleep (not often mind you, since he is a polyphasic sleeper), consider adding Styg as well, as we forge into the wee hours of the night. See you all on the other side!

e Denver Broncos have set up a free agent visit with Baltimore Ravens veteran defensive lineman Justin Bannan, per a league source.

Bannan is a valuable, gritty interior lineman who has been productive for the Ravens in a rotation with Kelly Gregg and Haloti Ngata.

Bannan went to the University of Colorado.

Per a source, the Broncos are also going after Ravens free agent defensive lineman Dwan Edwards and are trying to set up a visit with the former Oregon State standout.

love the focus on point of attack
Early on, #Broncos linked to DE Jason Babin, DL Justin Bannan and DE Dwan Edwards

We’ll need a center, but with Hadnot, Denver’s still probably looking center via the draft at some point. Just maybe not Pouncey.

Add one or 2 of those guys & focus on a NT later maybe?

I can make and send phone calls with no problem and I never drop calls

It is never going to go to Verizon because Verizon does not support GSM and does not use sim cards. Verizon Uses CDMA technology that does not work with the iPhone. Apple would have to completely rebuild the phone for it to work on Verizon. You will be waiting forever. AT&T has very good service everywhere I go. You are probably someone who believes those Verizon commercials that are completely inaccurate. Verizon is a joke

I work in IT. That’s how I feed my family.

All my opinions of cell phones and cell phone networks are based of personal experience trial and error. I’ve tried AT&T’s service and it blows…dropped calls, bad reception.

I don’t have those problems with Verizon ever….in the middle of BFE CO, KS, WA state. It just doesn’t compare. Sign me up as a believer in the commercials becasuse they jive with what I’ve seen first hand.

Yea Verizon paid a bunch of money to give service to people in the

the middle of nowhere. Shitty business move. Lets pay millions of dollars to give service to an area that 100 people line in. They are not getting a return on that investment. Go to pretty much every major city and AT&Ts service is just fine.

Oh and by the way I am not the biggest fan of AT&T as a company but their Cell service gets a bad rap when its not really that bad.

Also I was talking about only the phone and not the network. As a phone the iphone is far superior in every way over the blackberry

    Not in my experience

I’ll trust my eyes, my ears, and my hands over your typing all day every day. My verizon service works EVERYWHERE…middle of nowhere, Denver, Seattle, you name it and I get reception.

...and there you lost any IT credence I was gonna give you

PCs serve a purpose (gaming). Apples serve an overpriced purpose…or did. Now pretty much any media-arts superiority they had (through 3rd-party proprietary hardware…in addition to their own) has been caught up to by the PC world. At least in the digital media editing (music) I use.

Basically, if you don’t play video games, and you don’t do graphic design, and you don’t have to stay compatible with the other people, you’re best off (saving money) building a system yourself and using linux.

    Dude I know Computers

everyone has their Preference. I used to swear by PCs until I got my first Mac. My PC used to always breakdown. My Mac always works and I never have issues. Oh and I do work in sales but not selling computers

by gnarlybroncodude on Mar 4, 2010 11:42 PM MST up reply actions

no I meant in sales in general...

I don’t have a preference. I use what works best for what I need. If I had the time to figure out linux on my netbook then I’d use it there—instead I just….acquire….the software I need.

    On what you brought up:
PCs tend to break more, sure. The fix is always fairly easy though, and even if its hardware you’re looking at max $200 fix. Macs are slightly (again, I worked in IT for a bit) more reliable, but if they do break you need a apple-certified guy to fix it. And all their hardware’s proprietary, so if it’s a hardware issue and you’re past warranty enjoy paying an arm and a leg for a new one.

Because Montana has no professional sports, I gotta support the land of my birth.

I also do not know any Graphic Design people

that use PCs. PC have a few areas where they are better. I personally think Apple is better. If I am in Graphic Design, Music Industry, Movies, things of these nature there is no way I own a PC

by gnarlybroncodude on Mar 4, 2010 11:44 PM MST up reply actions

    That was my point.

PCs=required for gaming. Not required for anything else.
Macs=required for graphic design. Not required for anything else.
If you don’t need one of the above, you’ll be best off going the linux route. Or will be in a decade or so, at any rate :p

And that in my medium of choice (music) there’s now enough processing/RAM power in computers thanks to dual/quad core and really cheap, massive amounts of RAM that PCs can handle mixing and mastering…which is awesome because I don’t want to shell out a few grand just for a machine with Protools+required sound card.

But the proprietary-ness is what’s always made me mad with Apple. DRM in the iTunes store, using an OS based on an open source concept (Unix) yet never being open themselves, and the price point that comes with the brand (I paid $800 in fall ‘08 to upgrade my computer to better than a Mac Pro that would cost $3500 right now…and you can’t even GET my graphics card).

    It's Pashos

A strong, hard-nosed tackle, Tony Pashos added both experience and depth to the offensive line. He joined the 49ers after spending 4 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens (2003-06) and 2 seasons with the Jacksonville Jaguars (2007-08).

From the 9ers site. Only started 1 game last year tho.

"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.

    Pashos scouting report

Tony Pashos has been a huge, dominant tackle. So why wasn’t he drafted higher? Slow feet that won’t allow him to block blitzing corners, safeties, and linebackers. So Baltimore will slide him over to Guard and Tony Pashos will be a dominant pass blocking Guard, who needs to work on his run blocking skills and won’t be seen leading many screens. It is possible Tony Pashos could play Right Tackle in the NFL.

    45 minutes ago from @Ravensinsider...

OWINGS MILLS, Md. — The Denver Broncos have set up a free agent visit with Baltimore Ravens veteran defensive lineman Justin Bannan, per a league source.

Bannan is a valuable, gritty interior lineman who has been productive for the Ravens in a rotation with Kelly Gregg and Haloti Ngata.

Bannan went to the University of Colorado.

Per a source, the Broncos are also going after Ravens free agent defensive lineman Dwan Edwards and are trying to set up a visit with the former Oregon State standout.

well if last year was any indication

we signed a bunch of RBs and DBs, and then drafted a RB and DBs early.

    I would

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:01 AM MST up reply actions

Morgan can play anywhere from the

outside shoulder of the center out. His first step is the best in the draft and makes him an immediate contributor on DL, which is tough to find. I like Williams too, but Morgan is rarer.

you can never have enough pass rushers

by gnarlybroncodude on Mar 5, 2010 12:06 AM MST up reply actions

but we’d be paying 1st round money for depth? That’d mean Dumervil, Ayers, and Graham or Morgan are all getting significant money.

by gnarlybroncodude on Mar 5, 2010 12:10 AM MST up reply actions

He played between 277 and 282 at GT

That is also the biggest he seems to get, and I doubt he carries much more on that frame even with development. It is the one less than ideal thing about him, but as a tchnician he plays better than bigger guys. he is an attacking type of player for a 3-4, who can be moved all along the line. If he is a selection by the Broncos it will say a lot about how they want the DL to perform.

I think he weighed in at the combine at 272…

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:05 AM MST up reply actions

    I love Brandon Graham

I think he is going to be a better version of Lamar Woodley. Dude has a nonstop motor. That performance he put in at the senior bowl was just amazing. He a solid regular season also. Dude is going to be coveted by 3-4 teams. Graham with be a 1st round pick for sure

by gnarlybroncodude on Mar 5, 2010 12:08 AM MST up reply actions

    I think

if we are going to target Graham, then we trade down right before the Patriots and snag him up. He really does have a motor that resembles the energizer bunny.

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:11 AM MST up reply actions

I'm not disagreeing with you or the scouting reports

and I like Graham as well, but from my own scouting, and some other scouts I have talked to, Morgan is ranked highly, even for 3-4 teams, despite his less than 300lb weight.

His explosiveness is the best in the draft, and if he slips, I think it will be like with Moreno last year, the Broncos won’t pass up on something that only comes around once in a while….

    I would say

Guard later in the draft. ILB, WR, CB and probably still a DLine. We will still need young guys to replace the vets we are signing in a few years

by gnarlybroncodude on Mar 5, 2010 12:01 AM MST up reply actions

    my opinion

I think that alot of those signings are to increase competition and add flexibility to the draft. you never want to go into a draft “desperately needing” a certain position.

I don’t think anything we do in FA will necessarily mean one thing or another for the draft.
With the depth of this draft, I wouldn’t be suprised if McD/X prefer to trade down to all other options

by DW76 on Mar 5, 2010 12:00 AM MST reply actions

    I agree

but I also disagree. I think it increases competition and flexibility, but look at the free agents we picked up last year. McD loves to use verterans. Most of the players we got on defense in last years free agency started or were big contributers during the year.

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:04 AM MST up reply actions

    oh for sure

And you will see again this year that some of these veterans he brings in will have a big role, but that will be due alot to the fact that rookies just generally dont make a major impact in their first year.
Signing a guy like Dwan Edwards wont change Denver’s plan to draft a DE, because they knew that there was an excellent chance the rookie wasnt going to make a major impact this year. If the guy they want is there and they feel he is a better player then say a WR in round 2 that they are also interested in….. I believe they will go with the DE over the WR, as oppose to saying: “well we got Dwan, so we can reach a bit for this receiver.”

by DW76 on Mar 5, 2010 12:09 AM MST up reply actions

    I here you

I understand what you mean. You’re right. Those free agents won’t make us reach for anybody. But I do think that getting Hadnot will make The Broncos move Center a little bit lower on the list of needs. Instead of aiming for a C in round two maybe they go for DL in line 2 instead.

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:16 AM MST up reply actions

    yah i agree

with the depth of this draft, they have a very good chance of landing a solid starter with that second round pick

Panthers released DT Maake Kemoeatu, who tore his tore Achilles in late July. Kemoeatu is expected to be ready for training camp.

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:25 AM MST reply actions

eh, 2008 he had 31 tackles, 2 passes deflected, and 1 FF. Looks like a big run stuffer though

by higgyhoops12 on Mar 5, 2010 12:27 AM MST up reply actions

    I know

he doesn’t have impressive stats, but we have a need in run protection. Could add depth

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:29 AM MST up reply actions

    Looks like

Shanny is going hard after Babbin. He could snag him up from us

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:28 AM MST reply actions

    Babbin is no loss.

    agreed

Babbin would not be much more than rotation most likely

    That's my guess as well.

I wonder if competing with the Broncos to get Babin fires him up a little…

    Maybe

the debate for Babin makes them sign a ridiculous contract haha

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:32 AM MST up reply actions

    Bruce Allen is apparently

squelching big name deals for the Redskins. He talked about wanting them to do a better job of looking for value… not by coincidence they end up targetting a player that McX is targetting. Last year our FAs were the definition of value.

    Speed of the Tender deals

are the deals involving picks expected to move pretty slow this year? I would love to know what we are getting for Marshall sooner rather than later

the general idea behind the tenders

is to slow the movement of tendered players to a crawl. Patience is a must.

    My Guess

is that we deal Marshall in the next 2 weeks. That’s just my personal opinion though

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:36 AM MST up reply actions

    hopefully..

by the end of tomorrow he’ll be a seahawk!

    two weeks is tolerable

i just dont want to wait til draft day and have all the teams jumping on tendered players during the draft. although that would be exciting in its own right

by zclayro on Mar 5, 2010 12:38 AM MST up reply actions

    I would

not be happy to have to wait all the way to draft day, but McD seemed to trade Cutler pretty quickly last year so i don’t expect THAT long of a wake with Marshall

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:40 AM MST up reply actions

It could be tomorrow, it could be right before the draft...

I agree, would love to know whats going on, but patience is a must this year haha

    Still

No word from Dwan? Were we able to set up a visit?

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:45 AM MST reply actions

does he have any other visits lined up?

it would be hard to think that many teams would let him leave town unsigned after working him out

    FA running backs

so if you could choose from mid tier running backs, who do you like? i would really like to bring one in to town, atleast for camp

    Faulk isn't

gonna leave New England. I wouldn’t mind picking up Fargas.

by Nick Cast on Mar 5, 2010 12:58 AM MST up reply actions

we already signed J.J. Arrington today

so with Hillis, Buck, Moreno and like 2 or 3 RB’s on future contracts, I dont see the need for more camp fodder… I’d rather add more DL/OL signings for competition in camp.

would like it if he would give us a discounted price

he might have to wear two helmets though, one more concussion he is goners

    I think

if he plays a reduced 3rd down role that he will be fine. If nothing else he could be the mentor to Moreno. His experience could be invaluable. Sort of like the experience Dawkins shares with McBath and Bruton

    Dwan

would be a very nice pick up. McD really knows what we need to improve on. He is getting right on the O-Line and D-Line. I like where we are going so far

    So for those still around..

those players we’re visiting with.. were they all backups? or starters?

Bleeding Orange & Blue in The Netherlands

by BroncosNL on Mar 5, 2010 1:20 AM MST reply actions

Those 5 guys appear to be some very good potential additions.

We need 2 more guys in the DL rotation. Thomas, Fields, McBean and Baker of the 7 look like real keepers. Peterson and Holliday will be on the bubble should we sign both Bannan and Edwards. I expect us to look strongly at Powell and Pedesaux (sp).

Even if we sign both Hadnot and Pashos, we need more. I could easily see Walton at #45 and another OG/OT or Olsen at #80. Both of these draft picks are versatile and can play both OC and OG. However, Kirk Morrison – ILB – from the Raiders for a #3 pick looks enticing. Martindale surely would be familiar with him and if he is traded for, should be a contributor.

    Exciting stuff.

I just checked the website.. we also still have J’Vonne Parker (6’5, 338) on the roster. He was injured all year, wonder how long his contract was, and if he’s a FA or still on the team
