Boldin, Hadnot Rumours....

Here's a couple of rumours swirling around over at National Football Post.com about Anquan Boldin adn Rex Hadnot. According to these sources, the Patriots are close to sealing a deal for Boldin (makes sense with all their 2nd round armoury) and the Broncos appear to be close to extracting that all important autograph from Mr Hadnot. Here are the respective sites....

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Source-Hadnot-getting-closer-in-Denver.html

Should we get involved in the Boldin deal, now that it looks like the market for BMarsh is starting to take off? And is Rex Hadnot - what a great name incidentally - the best solution for out interior line??

Adam Schefter reports

Baltimore and KC are are in the running too.

Evening Higgy!

Yeah, just read that. I would like us to get involved in those sweepstakes if we are, as it would appear, on the verge of losing BMarsh, whether its the Hawks or another yet unidentified team. Thanks.

by MileHighMan on Mar 5, 2010 2:44 PM MST up reply actions

yup

I’d hate to see Boldin at KC. They’d have numerous options with Boldin, Bowe, and Charles. Could be troublesome if they improve on the O-Line.

by higgyhoops12 on Mar 5, 2010 2:50 PM MST up reply actions

I'd wanna steer clear of Boldin

Seems like a nice player, but not sure if he’s woth a big financial commitment. He’s very injury prone and can be a bit of a ‘me’ guy (not that most WR’s aren’t, I guess).

Just seems like we’d be getting an older, more banged up version of Marshall.

With Haley in KC, I’d say that he knows just how to use Boldin and that that’s a great move for the Chiefs, but if he busts there & Cassel doesn’t markedly improve, those fans are gonan burn Haley & Pioli at the stake. They need to work on their O-line and defense in a big way, so throwing money at a player that relies on a QB who relies on an O-line is a bold move.

Boldin seems like a really good fit for B-More and could help that offense take a step towards a being more consistent and more dangerous group (although I think Flacco’s a bit overrated and Ray Rice is vastly underrated).

Yeah, points well made and noted.

I think the link with Todd Haley could be a distinct threat, and that three headed monster could be quite scary, considering what just one of them did to us in Wk17!

And whilst many were predicting the Ravens would get involved in the BMarsh sweepstakes, you have to admire Ozzie – why waste a perfectly good 1st round pick when a second rounder could bring in someone of a close enough level to BMarsh, in the shape of Boldin. Nice post sir!

Sorry, no link but came from cbs sports.

Also schefter just tweeted that Ravens are close to a deal with boldin and that the eagles released will witherspoon

Just read that. Looks like a plain and simple dogfight between the Ravens and the Chiefs then…. playoff team vs. ex-coach…..

Well, certainly can’t knock the Lions for their initial efforts can we? Not sure an older, albeit productive, RB was what most people would have pegged them for. Still, sometimes it pays to think outside the box, and this should certainly help take more pressure off young Stafford. Believe they picked up DT Corey Williams for a low round pick. Not sure how he went last season, but I seem to recall his name being bandied around many fanposts. Seems like reasonably good business. Not like them!! Thanks.

by MileHighMan on Mar 5, 2010 3:43 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah,

Seems as if the Lions are trying to get out of the cellar this year. Williams, VandenBosh, and possibly Suh would sure be a good start on the Dline and then pairing TJ with Kevin Smith. Hmmmm

Yep, and then you have Calvin Johnson, Bryant Johnson and Nate Burleson split out, with Pettigrew at TE. Seems to me that a solid OL is all they really need to be set on offense. On D, I’d like to see how DT Sammie Lee Hill pans out. I sort of hoped we’d have picked him up in last year’s draft, but it wasn’t to be. A man mountain, a behemoth. If they can tighten up their O line, and pick up a couple of DBs (did Dre Bly go back there?) to accompany that great rookie FS (whose name escapes me), they could cause a few surprises. And as you say, if they can pick up a Suh or a McCoy, which looks likely, that’ll only strengthen the case further. Interesting times for the Lions and their long-suffering fans. Hope it goes well for them.

Bare with me...

But if Denver isn’t in the running (yet anyway) for Boldin or Walter two things come to mind.

1. They must have found SEVERAL receivers in the draft that they really like. I say several because the draft is pure chaos and you can’t go in thinking you’re going to be able to get any specific player. I don’t know if Bryant made himself any more of a value at The Combine – especially as a #11 year. I’ve said in past posts that I like LaFell, Decker, and Hodge as replacements.

2. Is Marshall REALLY gone? I have zero problem with him leaving, especially for a tasty package (I prefer #14 and a player over #6, but I’d really like a 2nd rounder and several players or later draft picks) But what about this. Marshall obviously has a number in his head and it doesn’t match Denver’s. Could the Broncos be putting Marshall on the market just so that the rest of the league can put a price tag on him that they could beat so long as it’s under THEIR number? I don’t think so. I, like most of you, think Marshall is gone, but it’s interesting to consider.

by Vortex7 on Mar 5, 2010 4:03 PM MST reply actions

Vortex

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, those two WRs would be preference if we were to dip into the market. Honestly think Walter could be the reincarnation of Eddie Mac! And I accept both of your arguments, and I don’t see Bryant having done anything to merit such a high pick. Lot of quality receivers this year. As for the tactics employed by Denver in respect of Marshall’s tender, I read a fanpost here the other night which provided a great analysis. Basically, by tendering a 1st, the Broncos kept as many teams as possible in the mix. Then, rather than us determine his market value, the competing teams would do that. If someone bites, we get a minimum of a 1st rounder, and if no-one bites, we have ourselves a gamebreaker at a fraction of the cost had we employed the franchise tag on him. The article suggested that he would get something like a 14% increase on his pay if he remained with the Broncos. Essentially, the front office has been very canny in this one, and seems to have played it very well. Hope that makes some sense. Still leaves a huge void – and hence my preference would be to have us at least in the mix for Boldin.

by MileHighMan on Mar 5, 2010 4:16 PM MST up reply actions

I liked Sammie

I didn’t want him for Denver, but I thought a lot of the man. Huge and agile, but struggled with double teams (hence his move to DE from NT) and had trouble against stronger competition. Still – great metrics, project player who could turn out well. He also once pulled an man from a burning house and was upset when the media got a hold of it – he said that he just hoped that someone would do it for his dad, and that it was no big thing. Great young man.

Looks lIke Boldin’s a Raven. Arizona receives a late 3rd and a late 4th, while Baltimore receives Boldin and a late 5th.

I didn’t think he’d come that cheap

That’s another notch in the Ozzie Newsome bedpost of good deals! Really think we may have missed a trick there. I’d have given those picks up in a heartbeat. Oh well, plenty of fish in the sea, and all that! On the flipside, Arizona have some serious issues – Warner’s retirement, Dansby and Rolle likely heading for the exit, and now Boldin….maybe why some people are tipping the 49ers for the NFC West. I’m going to the game at Wembley in October. Can’t wait. The only other time I’ve seen the Broncos live was in Superbowl XXXII, so hoping for a similar outcome.

Don’t laugh, I remember him carving us up pretty good in that snowy game at Invesco a few years back. And let’s be honest, who is our BQ – Chris Simms? All heart (and spleen, sorry, couldn’t resist that!) and no skills.

by MileHighMan on Mar 5, 2010 4:34 PM MST up reply actions

The price that Boldin was dealt for

should indicate to us all the weakness in the WR market these days….people just don’t want to pay hefty prices for these guys….seriously if Boldin is worth a late third how can we reasonable expect more than a first for Marshall?

by T.Dot_Bronco on Mar 5, 2010 4:29 PM MST reply actions

T.Dot

Thanks for the post, and you’re right. If we can wangle a 1st out of someone, be it Seattle or whomever, then we should grab it and bank it straight away. Wonder if we’ll maybe look at someone like a Kassim Osgood (versatile ST player) or a Malcolm Floyd (big body like BMarsh, plus hurting a division rival always goes down well with the fanbase!). Any other WR options out there, or should we simply look to the draft to replace BMarsh if/when he departs?

by MileHighMan on Mar 5, 2010 4:37 PM MST up reply actions

Adam

Yeah, you’re right. That’s too pricey…Osgood is a UFA though, so that might be a thought… Don’t know why we’re panicking anyway…this is Day One of free agency. Recession? What recession!? Thanks for your comments.

by MileHighMan on Mar 5, 2010 5:09 PM MST up reply actions

I really don't know how to replace Marshall

Our needs at WR include a big body possession guy (assuming Marshall is gone) and a burner. Dez Bryant may be another Marshall on and off the field, and if true is not the answer McD is looking for. I honestly would have like to have seen the Broncos go after Boldin but since that’s not happening I don’t have any answers.

by T.Dot_Bronco on Mar 5, 2010 5:07 PM MST up reply actions

T.Dot

You and me both. The Ravens really have gotten themselves a bargain there. What the hell were the Cardinals thinking?? He really would have softened the likely blow of losing BMarsh. Despite his injury last year, he still finished with 84 receptions and over 1,000 yards, so to all those naysayers, I think you could realistically have had a pretty good exchange there. But I guess you can’t sign everyone. Speaking of which, the ’skins and Uncle Mike are very quiet….apart from a few minor in-house retentions….

by MileHighMan on Mar 5, 2010 5:13 PM MST up reply actions

I like Demaryius Thomas from GT. Big body at 6’3", 229 lbs and he’s a burner. Supposively he ran a 4.4 before he broke his foot.

by higgyhoops12 on Mar 5, 2010 5:44 PM MST up reply actions

Higgy

Yeah, I don’t get to see much college football here in Britain, but I’ve read a good bit about him, and he doesn’t seem to bring the baggage that Bryant does. Pity about the foot injury mind you. Certainly an option worth considering with our 2nd or possibly 3rd pick??

by MileHighMan on Mar 5, 2010 6:02 PM MST up reply actions

don’t think he’ll be around in the 3rd but definately the late first or early 2nd.
