Broncos sign DL Justin Bannan and CB Nathan Jones
The Denver Broncos on Friday agreed to terms with unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Justin Bannan and cornerback Nathan Jones, it was announced. As per club policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.
"We are excited with these two additions and expect Justin Bannan and Nathan Jones to make positive contributions to the Broncos both on the field and in the locker room," Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. "Justin will fit into our scheme very well, and having played his college ball at Colorado, he's thrilled to return to this state as a Bronco. Nathan's versatility in the secondary will make us better. He is a quality player who is eager to compete and make an impact on this team."
General Manager Brian Xanders added, "Besides being a quality football player who is versatile, tough and smart, Justin Bannan is a quality person. He is the type of player we are looking for as we build our football team. Nathan Jones has experience playing outside cornerback, nickel cornerback and safety. He makes plays on defense and has been a core contributor on special teams."
Bannan (6-foot-3, 310 pounds) is a ninth-year defensive lineman who played for Baltimore during the last four years after spending his first four NFL seasons with Buffalo. He was selected by the Bills in the fifth round (139th overall) of the 2002 NFL Draft from the University of Colorado.
In 113 career regular-season games (27 starts), Bannan has posted 230 tackles (138 solo), 5.5 sacks (28.5 yds.), one interception, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He also has registered 12 tackles (10 solo) in five postseason games (2 starts).
During the 2009 season, Bannan played all 16 games for the second consecutive season and registered 37 tackles (23 solo) for the Ravens. He also appeared in both postseason contests for Baltimore, contributing one solo tackle.
Bannan started a career-high 15 games and appeared in all 16 contests for the Ravens in 2008, totaling a personal-best 56 tackles (30 solo), one sack, one interception and three pass breakups. His play helped Baltimore rank second in the NFL in total defense and third in the league against the run.
A four-year starter at Colorado, Bannan attended Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, Calif., and was born on April 18, 1979.
Jones (5-foot-10, 185 pounds) is a seventh-year cornerback who appeared in every game during the last two seasons with Miami after spending his first four NFL seasons with Dallas. He was selected by the Cowboys in the seventh round (205th overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft from Rutgers University.
In 83 career regular-season games (7 starts), Jones has totaled 104 tackles (91 solo), six sacks (34 yds.), three interceptions, 13 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He owns 53 career tackles on special teams and has returned 10 kickoffs for 178 yards (17.8 avg.).
The cornerback also has appeared in three playoff games for his career, registering two defensive tackles, four special-teams tackles and two kickoff returns for 45 yards (22.5 avg.).
Last season, Jones appeared in all 16 games for the Dolphins and registered career highs in games started (5), tackles (35), pass breakups (10), special-teams tackles (19) and forced fumbles (2). Jones, whose 19 special-teams tackles tied for 10th in the NFL, also added one sack with Miami in 2009.
A four-year letterwinner at Rutgers, Jones attended Fanwood High School in Scotch Plains, N.J., and was born on June 15, 1982.

Thanks for the update
That’s great to see, D-line and CB. I’m wondering what we’re going to draft now.
Great work by the Broncos!
Bannon is a big and versatile player. Folks will have good arguments on where he belongs (DE or NT), but I see him as a run stopping DE, probably better on the left side. I think he has an excellent chance to start, or to rotate frequently at the very least.
Jones is a solid CB, and underrated (in my opinion). While he won’t dazzle the fans with multiple interceptions, he is a solid tackler and keeps plays in front of him. He won’t replace Bailey (who would?), but he’ll keep the secondary alive while we prepare for upcoming retirements.

Agree
MSM has him as starting NT but I see him as an equal to Fields and not an upgrade. At LDE, he is an upgrade over McBean. If McBean goes to RDE, he will be an upgrade over Peterson.

Good thinking.
I agree. I see Bannon at LDE, with McBean moving to RDE. Fields stands pat.
This could change with further FA moves and the draft, but for now I think you are correct.

With this signing
Do you think we will make another move to sign Dwan Edwards? If we did, which of those three do you think he would push out for a starting job?
Hey kiddies.... I have Internet candy in my van...
we need so many
they would all have a place, even if we get Dwan and draft a guy. We were shorthanded last year, which was part of our late season problem.

Agree with Jeremy
I think we are going to shoot for a bigger line, and also a need to rotate. No matter how many guys we have (and who officialy starts), I think more than 3 DLmen would see significant starting time.

McBean was not really all that bad last year
He was pretty good against the run but was no so much against the pass. It was also his first full year as a starter. He looked pretty good to me. I know one thing the best player is going to play. It does not matter how much money you make with McDaniels

Does Anybody
have an update on how the negotiations are going with Rednot. Who are the other players that we have visiting?
In all seriousness though
Not sure.. reports where saying we where close to a deal with him, now no news.
Dwan Edwards came for a visit and is now visiting seattle, not sure if he didn’t like what was offered here or he just wants to see whats available elsewhere.
This is a huge victory for day one
Good update

Concerned about Hadnot
a few hours ago it was said we were close to a deal….haven’t heard a follow up.
keep up the hope
i have not heard of Hadnot lining up other visits so we should just be crunching out the figures

Think he was visiting the 'skins aswell though not sure..
they seem to be after c & g aswell in FA. :-(
Keep Fields at NT
He did a great job there and line Bannan up at Defensive Guard…if that’s what we want to call the Denver 52.
i would let them duke it out in the offseason
and once decided move the other to the outside (defensive guard)

Kudo’s to Brian Xanders and Keith Kidd, the Pro Personnel Director that finds these type players.
Yes McD too because he interviews them.
kudos+++ for recognizing Kidd's contribution
Keith Kidd
Director of Player Personnel
Keith Kidd is in his 15th year working in the NFL in 2009 and begins his first year as the Denver Broncos’ director of pro personnel. A member of the personnel department that helped build the New England Patriots’ back-to-back Super Bowl-champion teams from 2003-04, Kidd joined the Broncos on Feb. 20, 2009.
Kidd gained 14 years of experience in the NFL with New England (2002-04), Cleveland (1999-2001) and Arizona (1991-98). He spent the last three seasons as an NFL analyst for ESPN’s scouting organization, Scouts Inc., and also wrote columns for ESPN.com.
As assistant director of pro personnel with the Patriots from 2002-04, Kidd worked with Head Coach Bill Belichick and personnel director Scott Pioli, helping the club to back-to-back Super Bowl wins during the 2003 and ‘04 seasons (XXXVIII and XXXIX). New England owned the best overall record (43-11 / .796) in the NFL during that three-year period and won a league-record 21 consecutive games from 2003-04.
Kidd was part of the Browns’ re-entry into the NFL in 1999 as their director of pro personnel and worked in that capacity through the 2001 season. He oversaw the scouting of NFL players as well as the advance scouting of each upcoming opponent for Cleveland while assisting with the signing of free agents and negotiating of player contracts.
Before joining the Browns, Kidd spent eight years with the Cardinals’ scouting department from 1991-98 and also handled additional responsibilities for the club during that time.
He began his career as a graduate assistant at his alma mater, Eastern Kentucky University, in 1987 and worked at the school through the ‘88 campaign. He spent 1989-90 as a graduate assistant at Arizona State University, where he worked with the Sun Devils’ defensive backs.
Born in Richmond, Ky., Kidd is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky with a master’s degree in sports administration and a bachelor’s degree in physical education.
His father, Roy, spent 39 seasons as the head coach for EKU from 1964-2002 and was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. Roy Kidd retired in 2002 with the sixth-most wins (314 / 314-124-8 overall record) of any coach in Division I or Division I-AA history. Eastern Kentucky’s football stadium and its conference’s annual coach of the year award are named in his honor.
Keith and his wife, Laura, have one son, Kody.

Coach
has said he wants competition at every position in camp…nothing surprising by this move… guys, studs and potentials, have to earn it. I love that approach. I would love to see Phonz do well, but if he can’t handle the competition, then may the best player win.
Committing random acts of Brandon since 2006...
no Dwan in favor of Green?
i doubt we would sign both, so does us not aggressively signing Dwan perhaps mean that our negotiations with jarvis Green are going well?

Good pickups Denver.
Welcome to Denver Bannan and Jones. A big run-stuffing DL is what we need. Now I hope we don’t let Hadnot leave town without a deal.

Should point out only $4 million of that is guaranteed.
Rest is in incentives, though some maybe easily attainable.

I love the incentive laden contract
Well done in my opinion. Let them know the money is there, they just have to work for it.

From pft
The broncos also hosted 49ers offensive tackle Tony Pashos on Friday, but he has not yet signed a contract.
Think the ’skins may have been after him also..
What ever happened to
Pashos? He looked like a nice big bodied guard with decent skill (ie upgrade over Hochstein)

McD coached against them twice a year
I’m sure he’s evaluated them fairly closely by now and like what he’s seen.
"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.

He said that he chose defensive guys who he struggled to game plan for
Don't say rebuild - say reload...
Something to keep in mind...
Paying Nathan Jones 3.5m/yr? We owe Bailey a huge bonus and will pay him 13m this year….Does this sound reasonable? Is Champ for sale? Redskins cut Smoot, shanny loves Champ? Along with Nathan Jones, we have Tony Carter, A Smith…it sounds a little suspect? Nobody said Ty Law isn’t coming back either….? Just thinking??
"Attitude reflects Leadership" Hogblog...aka KSM
That would concern me
Champ, Marshall, Cutler all gone? I don’t know. Marshall and Cutler I understand. The Skins probably wouldn’t give up 4 for Champ, so I wouldn’t trade him for anyone else on their roster. He is too valuable.

I thought I read
today that the Broncos would honor the rest of Champs contract…I suppose that isn’t a guarantee that they won’t trade him though
The Lloyd resigning strikes me as interesting
the dude was inactive for what 15-16 weeks last year and that merits resigning? It’s a possible indication that the Broncos have no intention of keeping Marshall or at the very least covering themselves in the event they lose him
he played well though
I like what I saw on the rare occasion that I saw it. And it only made his inactivity more curious.
no goats, no glory.
I don't know much about the player
but I’m excited about the enthusiasm towards him….If he’s liked around here, there’s probably a good reason
Off topic: Scheffler
An update from his agent’s point of view, on KDVR. Is it just me or does his agent, yep, Bus Cook, sound like a total whiner here?
"It is what it is. I am not still sure whether they want Tony or not. Obviously they don’t value him the way they value their other guys. Elvis Dumervil, Kyle Orton and Brandon Marshall were all drafted lower than my client, but tendered at a higher level," said Cook.
Maybe it’s because, I don’t know, Dumervil, Orton and Marshall have all been far more productive starters? Who cares where he was drafted? Should the Broncos have paid Marcus Nash more too?
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants country, and damned proud of it.
Bus Cook...
The comment reflects on him perfectly. I doubt he realizes how foolish his comment sounded.

Being the Utahn I am
and judging by how much I’ve watched Brigham Young’s Dennis Pitta, I think he’ d be an excellent replacement for Scheffler if Bus Crook ensures Tony leaves Denver. Check out his Combine workout yourselves if you’re unconvinced.

now i would be really disappointed if that is all we got for marshall
