Free Agency Night Number two OPEN THREAD
Hey all, I just thought this was such a great success last night, we could all benefit by keeping each other posted, interacting, and doing it again.
The Broncos brought in J.J. Arrington, Nathan Jones, and Justin Bannan today. It seems like Jones and Arrington will make an impact in a more limited role, but Bannan is fully expected to be our starting nose tackle.
It was also reported that on the other side of the line, we brought in Tony Pashos and Rex Hadnot for visits. Reports were that Hadnot was close to a deal with the Broncos, but that nothing was imminent. Seems like the dude should take the deal to be our starting center...
Pashos would likely have been used in a much more limited role, and there were reports he would test the free agent waters some more with Washington. Such a large man likely would not be a great fit in the zone blocking scheme Big Mike is likely to employ out east, but Pashos has his reasons (cold, hard cash).
The Broncos are also said to be interested in (and one of two finalists for) former Patriots DL Jarvis Green and former Ravens DL Dwan Edwards. Both would be very nice additions.
Let the open thread begin!

Bigger. Better?
I like the addition of Bannan. Denver’s D needs to find a way to stop the run. But with the high altitude, I wonder if bigger is going to be better. At least Bannan played in Colorado prior to signing with the Broncos. He knows what he’s in for.
I agree troy
I’ve heard that Bannan is a very underrated player. Even Greg Rosenthall over at PFT thought it was a nice, cap friendly add. Mike Lombardi called it his value pick of the day on NFLN. McX is a smart machine

Sayre, You're the Draft Guy
If Seattle takes BMarsh and if we get the 6th pick – do we keep it or do we trade it away? If we keep it, does Xanders, Kidd, and McD take a QB?
Depends
The 1st round I’m digging if we get 6 is McClain and Dez Bryant. I could easily see them taking Bradford if St. Louis foolishly passes on him. Last word was St. Louis wanted McCoy, but who knows. They are stupid.
Not that McCoy’s not good…I would lean towards McClain, Bradford almost for sure if he falls, or trade down.

If we were going to draft a QB,
why haven’t we released Simms? I’d like to see all our quarterbacks with another year in the system. Including Simms.

I asked John the same question yesterday
just because we dont have to yet. Options options options is what he stressed me ;). They can release him anytime

I would say we haven’t dropped Simms just in case the option for a better QB doesn’t show itself. There’s no guarantee that we would pick up another pick, and I would guess that there are other priorities over QB if we don’t get another pick. Therefore, I believe it is probably the safe/smart move to keep Simms until we don’t need him.
Not usually
I was involved with a few cases where that wasn’t true, but with athletes, failure to acclimatize is relatively rare

What up with the Nathan Jones pick up?
I thought we addressed our secondary depth in last years draft and free agency.
I love it
With Ty Law out, we had a void at CB. Tony Carter will compete in camp with Barrett, in all likelihood, for the final DB spot. Jones can play CB and S, and he is also a valuable STer too.

With all of our starters over 30...
…we face a ot of retirements or skill downturns over the next two to three years. We’ll need a DB or two every year for the next two to three years to keep up. (We failed to stagger ages in the past, and are paying for it now).
Plus, not every new guy will work out, so we can’t really bring in guys at the rate we expect to lose them. We need to build a pool now. The SAFs last year (plus Smith) helped, but we also plugged in some vets to keep us afloat.
Jones isn’t spectacular, but he’s solid and dependable. He’ll buy us some time during the DBs transition until we can bring up a young class of talent. I think it was a good move.

absolutely BUT
all this mediocre talent we’re looking at. How about a star or two please? Where’s Pat spending his money these days?
by Whidbey Bronco on Mar 6, 2010 12:51 AM MST up reply actions
How do you know if these guys are mediocre talent
Some people just amaze me. Bannan was stuck behind arguably the best NT in the league and when he had to step in they did not miss a beat. Maybe the guy needed a chance to prove himself.
What Star or Two do you want? There really are not stars in FA this year because of the CBA. We did not really sign any stars but Dawkins last year and we signed some really good players last year. You do not always need Stars to win games. How many stars did NO defense have this year besides Shaper. Their Front 7 had no big names but they got the job done. People and their love for the stars.
by gnarlybroncodude on Mar 6, 2010 1:08 AM MST up reply actions
Here' what I'm thinking.
It is a two step approach.
First, instead of signing major stars (which cost a lot, and mean less money and talent for other positions), I think the team is going for an approach that says “We will not go for stars at any position, but we won’t have weak players at any spot either”.
The next step is the best part. Despite not going for big names (which means we spread the talent around the team), we are STILL going to have players that emerge as stars. Remember that Marshall wasn’t a starter when he came to Denver, and one never knows how a draft pick will turn out. Also, FAs can radicaly change their quality of play from one team to the next, depending on system, coaching style, and fellow players.
For my two cents, I think Bannan and Jones are both very good players. They may not be stars, but they are also both well above average. If Jones doesn’t start, it is because he behind Bailey and Goodman. But he’s good enough to be a starter. Bannan played behind Ngata, so he didn’t get many chances. Still, when he HAS played he’s looked really good. I expect him to start right away. Arrington is the only guy I give a mixed grade to. He’s very good at what he does (screens, returns), but I question his health and his ability to run the gut. He may be a situational player for us, and besides, even if he doesn’t work out, the risk and contract are on the low side.
Don’t get me wrong; it IS thrilling to get a star. Dawkins is a great example. But it may be better to get two or three guys for longer, each of whom plays very well. Once the team has ne real weaknesses, then we can shoot for major players (in my opinion). The hard part to keep in mind is that this approach doesn’t mean that we won’t have stars. It just means that the stars will emerge from inside the team instead of being brought in.

Player development
McDaniels brought in teachers across the board when coaching personnel was hired. It makes sense to me that the second year under these coaches will see significant improvement across the board in player development as well. EVERYONE was new to virtually EVERYTHING last year so the potential for everyone to improve is quite high. Some of the players, like Chris Baker and Alphonso Smith, may leapfrog last year’s performance as there is no way one can avoid the fact they were learning an entirely new system AND were rookies.
Personally, I cannot way to see the effects of teaching, time, and the addition of new depth throughout the team. Come on training camp, sigh!

I love that idea, Osgood is a beast for sure. If we lose Marshall, I think he can replace him as our big target receiver, just 80% as good.
Just thought that I'd chime in
Osgood is a great special teams player (NOT a returner, though) but he’s not a WR. Big or not, he doesn’t have the hands. I think that he had all of 1 catch last year, and that was emergency duty. Good player, but not what people think that he is.

My overall take.
No spectacular pick ups, but all of them solid. No bad moves.
1) Arrington RB – a receiving RB, he is best used in screens and STs returns. Doesn’t solve our short yardage issues, could be a health risk. If he stays healthy, I think he does well for us spelling either of our starters. If he can pick up his pass blocking skills, he could get much more time. (C+)
2) Bannon DE – I expect Bannon to play at LDE (though he is versatile). Solid run stopper, and can take up space to assist the LBs. (B)
3) Jones CB – Not a ball hawker, so he won’t excite fans with INTs. However, he’ll keep plays in front of him, and make solid tackles. Makes very few mistakes. Dependable. Buys the Broncos time to build up a pool of young talent at the DB positions. (B)

I agree with all your grades
though I’d almost be inclined to either grade Arrington slightly higher, or give that one an incomplete. I’m assuming he’s healthy now, and if he is he may be a steal. But we want to see how he looks first. I like the other guys a lot.

I'll be thrilled if we score "B" at every move the rest of FA.
We don’t have to spend wildly, or to get big names to be good this year. As long as we bring in good players who are reliable at what they do, and get rid of weaknesses, we can field a very good team.

I think most people see him at NT.
Unless other changes come (draft and FA, both of which are likely), right now I would see him at LDE. He’s a natural run stopper, and McBean is more a keeper than Peterson. Bannan is also able to play NT and DE indifferently. Of our three current DLmen, I think Fields and McBean are safest.
I wouldn’t bet the house on it. It just looks that way to me so far. (I’m still proud of out-smarting the MSM on other pre-season moves, such as the move of DJ from ROLB to RILB).

If part of this move for Bannan won’t also allow us to ship fields off to Miami for a pick. Otherwise I think you’re right about him playing LDE.
Scheffler update
An update from his agent’s point of view, on KDVR. Is it just me or does his agent, yep, Bus Cook, sound like a total whiner here?
“It is what it is. I am not still sure whether they want Tony or not. Obviously they don’t value him the way they value their other guys. Elvis Dumervil, Kyle Orton and Brandon Marshall were all drafted lower than my client, but tendered at a higher level,” said Cook.
Maybe it’s because, I don’t know, Dumervil, Orton and Marshall have all been far more productive starters? Who cares where he was drafted? Should the Broncos have paid Marcus Nash more too?

Shannon Sharpe revolutionized the TE positioned and made it really sexy. When you add the Tony “the tiger” Gonzolez, Dallas Clark and Jason Whitten to the mix and we get all worked up over TEs. so what are the estimated figures???
CentSports free 10 cents to bet with Better than Fantasy Football, pick'em!!
Get Hadnot!!!
Winners and Losers of Day 1 of FA
Winners:
1) Chicago Bears
- Julius Peppers and Chester Taylor were huge gets for the Bears. A premier pass rusher and a solid rotation back from a division rival. The only thing they didn’t address was their woeful O-line. Good luck C. Taylor running behind that line.
2) (tie) Miami Dolphins/N.Y. Giants
- Dolphins pick up a great ILB in Dansby, maybe allowing McClain to slide on down to 11…and the Giants solidified their secondary with Rolle. Possibly doesn’t speak well for the health of Kenny Phillips.
3) you guessed it…Denver BRONCOS!!!
- Justin Bannan and Nate Jones were solid pick ups. Bannan can help a rush defense that faltered around the end of the year, and Jones will replace aging Ty Law and push Alphonso Smith for the nickel-corner job.
Losers:
1) Arizona Cardinals
- Having lost the middle of their defense in Karlos Dansby and Antrel Rolle, and possibly losing Rolle’s replacement in Matt Ware, plus the trade of Anquan Boldin, the Cardinals have the look of a team that is rebuilding, even though they were in the Super Bowl 2 yrs ago.
2) Detroit Lions
- Having given Nate Burleson #1 WR money, signing Kyle Vanden Bosch, and trading for Corey Williams, some might think that they had a good FA period. I’m not buying it. It’s almost as if players go to Detroit and their playing careers take the same type of dive as GM stock. They better not mess up that #2 pick, because if they can’t join the rest of the NFL by the end of the 2010 season, maybe the Commish should really think about contraction.
Anyhow, that’s my view of Day 1.

He was fed to the wolves a lot as a rookie, then got hurt and was replaced by Warner. It is very possible he actually learned sometohing sitting on the bench the lsat few years….
Or, he learned nothing, has no running game to keep teams from teeing off on him, and a defense that will put him in repeated bad situations… yep, could get ugly.

So teams are allowed to spend what they want — on both the low end and the high end. But next year, who knows. We don’t even know if there will be football in 2011.
If the NFL goes the way of the NHL, it’s likely that a lowered cap will be put in place. Big spending this year, could handicap a team for many years to come.
I like Denver’s approach. I have since Josh and Brian came on board.
The Bears
They need Offensive Line, and unfortunately this free agent class is weak. These three signings will mask the fact that they will largely have to neglect adding a good, talented offensive lineman this offseason. They will be 3rd place again, barring injuries to the Vikes and Packers.

Not sure I would agree with the Chicago being in the winners column...
Lots of big money talent does not neccessarily lend itself to a winning season… or even getting better for that matter. Those guys had bigger holes to fill, and they still have those exact same holes.
I say they spent alot… got big names… and might have cost themselves big time.

Personally, I think they won in FA because of who they got, and who they took away from their division rivals...
But, that doesn’t mean that they’ll be any good. C***** can’t throw picks to Peppers on Sundays, only in practice…lol
"I got a ring, too. It says Love. Think about THAT."

I do not think the Bears are winners
because they still need a lot of help on the Oline and at WR. They have so many holes. Peppers is nice but he is also 30. I have always liked Chester Taylor

I'm just saying that the Bears won the FA period first day, not that they are going to run the NFL for years to come.

Why do the Bears need help out WR
And dos that mean Denver is going to need help as well? Once Marshall is gone our WR corps isnt going to look that pretty..

You sure?
Chicago doesn’t have much at WR, right now, and they didn’t sign any big name receiver in FA. Their first pick in the draft is in round 3. So, idk…
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Bus is a D Bag
Tendering scheffler with a lower pick only helps his client attract interest from other teams. Bus should quit his job as an agent and take up tv journalism. Spin doctor at work, and no I am not refering to the 90s grundge band. Actually, it’s not even a good strategy, Bus should be singing the Broncos praises to make other teams worried we are working to re-sign scheffler. Like I said, what a d bag.

marshall trade possibilities
Why not get our 14 back from Seattle and a third or fourth rounder instead of the 6th pick? It will be cheaper in the long run and could provide more flexibility to trade down if necessary.
by FtCoNative on Mar 5, 2010 8:59 PM MST via mobile reply actions
That's more likely
though they don’t have a third this year, so a future pick or a fourth and fifth seem more likely. Maybe a player since it seems McD would want a proven player in exchange as well as a high draft pick.

looked like he had a pretty decent season too.
3rd leading tackler on the Phins this season
By the way
I don’t get all the hate being laid on Alphonso Smith. He was drafted high—not his fault by the way—and he was hobbled fairly early in the season with an injury. Before that I thought he looked pretty good playing nickel. I say give him a chance. My guess is that the CB signing today had less to do with Smith and more to do with Champ entering the last year of his contract and Goodman being over 30.

This is a fantastic point. Jones was not brought in to take Smith’s job…This year. He was brought in for depth as well as insurance if Champ is not retained next year.

+100 for logic to OB & UD
Most people don’t stop and consider the fact that the trade terms under which Alphonso Smith was obtained is irrelevant to how he developed. The fact that people cite the trade terms for disliking him as a player reveals the irrational nature of their opinion.

Alphonso may indeed end up a bust, but then again, he could end up all-pro. Time will offer the answer and all of our opinionating will not change that. Of course, supporting his development and giving him a reasonable opportunity to prove himself is our job, if one is a true Bronco fan.

Interesting enough
According to ESPNs point value chart. #6 is worth 1600. #14 is worth 1100. Difference of 500 points. pick #40 is worth 500. So there you go #14 and #40 or #6.

I said this drunkenly
Its going to happen. Drunken logic is NEVER wrong.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
Owens is DONE
The guy cant catch a cold anymore.
Have you seen how many drops he’s had the past 2 years in DAL and BUF?
FootballOutsiders did an essay, I think in one of their Prospectus’ on signs a WR is just about finished. A big increase in drops is the #1 indicator. 30-something WRs will be scooting along at 1000yard seasons, have a year with a big number of drops, and fall off the cliff from there on out. The sample included C.Carter, J. Rice, and even our very own Rod Smith.
We shouldn’t touch TO with a 10-foot pole.
Moss did the same thing
In Oakland.
And then BOOM.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
Actually he didn't....
I could be wrong, but I don’t think that is true. He never had the big increase in drops from his previous rate.
Yes, he had lowered production overall, but that isn’t the indicator… it is very partricularly about drop-rate. And in any case, Randy Moss at the time was in his late 20s, not 30s. The indicator is about age decline, so its not surprising that the younger player still has multiple years left. TO is a dinasaur at this point.
I get the feeling some player don't want to compete for a job.
When Mcdaniels tells them that every position will be a competative, the look for an easier way/job. I think that turned Cutler off also, but its the right way to do things.

I'd be livid.
I think that’s jsut what Clayton reported though.
what sense does that make?
There is a first round tender on Marshall…wtf would Seattle think we’d accept less than that? What’s the point
this happens all the time
Teams put a first round tender on a guy and than they negotiate. Last years Cassel had a 1st round tender on him and i believe he went for a 2nd

A 2nd and a 4th?
You figure it this way: IF Seattle wants to sign Marshall, they HAVE to surrender the 6th overall pick unless Denver agrees to a trade. Would you trade the 6th pick for the 40th and 104th? Never. Never ever.

Because real world trades...
…almost never reflect real world value. Because Denver apparently made him an insane offer and he turned it down. Because Denver has made nice an all in public, but they realize that bringing back a guy they had to suspend twice in one season might be viewed as a little hypocritical in the locker room, where team first and all that is stressed.
I’m not saying necessarily agree with it, but I don’t think the idea that Denver simply wants to cut ties is given enough weight around here.

What's the oint of placing a tender on somebody
if people call you and try to get you to give it up for less…if we wanted a second we would have placed a second on him
It can be a way to start the bidding process.
The tender says we should get a 1st rounder, but it seems to me that we as fans (myself included) over-inflate the trade value of players when it comes to draft picks. Is Marshall a great WR? Sure. On the other hand, he has a knack for getting in trouble (and not just legal – remember his fight with the TV and the torn tendon?), and is a problem in the locker room and on the field (the glove incident nearly cost us a TD). While nobody should blame Marshall for what some thug did to Darrent, it is worth noting that Marshall made bad decisions even on that night. In the end, I really admire Marshall as a receiver; as an overall player with the big picture I wouldn’t give up a first round pick for him.
I think the Broncos made a shrewd move by starting the bidding at a first round offer. Remember, this is a business and the team will get what they can. If they get less, it won’t be for lack of trying.

I don't know that how much money you make is a big deal....
Players know that there are other players who make more money. A guy who makes $20k/year looks at a guy making 50k and thinks he has it made. I don’t know if you’d find many people making $50k that aren’t looking to increase their income.
To me it’s the same thing but on a larger scale. We can look at someone making $3mil and say they’ve got it made, and that that’s so much money that there’s no difference between $3mil and $5mil. Well, the difference in my mind is $2million dollars a year. Whether they’re making millions or not, people see that as $2 million dollars a year.
I understand the frustration of guys making tons of money complaining about money, but at the same time I’d be looking to maximize my salary as well.

hoping he can break that INT record next year, he was so close last year

I still will be happy when they lose,
however won’t really be to into it anymore until they play us. Although, he still doesn’t have anyone to throw to.

Don't forget folks
John Clayton is the source.
The same John Clayton who last weekend on “The Huddle” said he thought Trent Cole would be ok as the Bills QB. Funny, I thought he played DE for Philadelphia and maybe Edwards was the QB for Buffalo.
He never did correct himself and don’t forget he is also the Dean of FU-thanks Joe
The QB position is set.
Yeah, I never really put much weight on what he has to say.

They re-signed Stephen Neal too.

No, he filled in at NT due to injury of starter and did a good job.
Normally he played DE.
That’s how I read it.

rotoworld says he's played NT as a fill-in roll, will most likely be
in the rotation in the front three…..you sold on him as a NT and not needing to draft one in the first 2 rounds Sayre? ie Williams.
Ok, hypothetical. Say we get #6 from Seahawks...this is who I want
Eric Berry and Rolando McClain. Instant Defense.
Not sure Berry lasts that long, but I could see many of those first 5 teams snatching QBs and Linemen

Wasn't it our offense that sucked last year?
haha

This is why I would be pissed off if we drafted Dez Bryant. ;-)

If Baker isn't working out, I'd want Dan Williams at 11
Not instant D – long term D. Williams, Dwan Edwards and Bannan makes my mouth water. Of course, I’d be perfectly happy with Berry, but the more I’ve studied McClain, the more I wonder. The coverage issues bother me. How are you on them?
Don't say rebuild - say reload...
Bannan is 30
I do not know how long term he will be.

If we trade back from 6 and 11..
We could have 2 late first rounders.. Odrick, Iupati
And two more to add to our second rounder.. Demarius Thomas, Pouncey and Spikes..
I can dream can’t I?
You're right, gnarly, and that's one more thing that comes into it for me
Again – I wish that I had any info on Baker, PDX and/or Powell. The development or lack of it by any or all of the three would have a huge effect on who we’d expect to look at in the draft or later in FA

I have a feeling its going to be a quiet night...
I’m out fellas. Baby will be waking up in less than 5 hours – if i am lucky. ;-)

We're gunna have to fill that void though,
good point Sayre, while Orton can be accurate, ALOT of his balls were way off the mark that Marshall had to adjust for with those massive strong hands. ( he had the dropsies too, I know). But Orton to me benifited more from Marshall then the other way around. Big whole to fill.

Good opening day for the Broncos- Justin Bannan, Nathan Jones. But the best news is that teams are very interested in Brandon Marshall.
I can’t wait to hear what teams are very interested and what that means.
I can't think of any senarios where I want the Beast gone...
A #6 pick sounds juicy…but …..geeezzz….I want B-Marsh!
Are you NOT entertained!?!? -Maximus
i want the 6th
the beast is done in denver. Time to move on.

Anybody here that wants to catch me up? What’s happening right now? Anybody meeting with the Broncos?
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
everything you probably expected
Supposedly Rex Hadnot is holed up in Denver trying to sign. I expect Marshall to be gone within the next week or so if not any earlier.

Anybody else looking at our OC (rex)? or does it sound like a lock?

From Klis: DP
The Broncos did offer Marshall a multiyear contract last summer worth approximately $9.5 million a season, according to two NFL sources.
Marshall rejected the proposal because the contract structure had relatively little money upfront, and also because the receiver preferred to play elsewhere.
Seattle may be where.
