ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that the Bengals have contemplated pursuing restricted free agent Brandon Marshall.

No visit is scheduled yet, and Marshall was in Seattle over the weekend. However, Schefter's report suggests that Cincinnati is serious about making the potential move. Marshall fits the profile for a franchise that loves to give players second, third, and even fourth chances, and the Bengals' No. 21 overall draft choice would likely be enough to consummate a trade.

**UPDATE** According to Bengals beat writer Joe Reedy, an ESPN report about the team's interest in restricted free agent Brandon Marshall is "mostly a smokescreen."

"Meant to drive up the price with Seattle," Reedy tweeted Sunday. The Bengals could really use a play-making wideout to book end Chad Ochocinco, but it appears they're not as interested as ESPN's Adam Schefter made it seem. The Seahawks continue to be the front-runners in the Marshall bidding.

Pretty bold of a Cincy beat writer to go up against Schefter! This is some serious drama folks!

I think he's worth more than a 21....

But Pouncey would be a nice consolation prize.

Interesting.

Regardless of what everyone else around here thinks, I still wouldn’t be happy about losing our best playmaker for only the 21st pick in the draft.

At this point, I just hope he sticks around if all we get for the man is 1 pick…

Franchise tag

the team can still control him with the franchise tag next season. If he plays this year under the tender and he plays next season under the franchise tag with no off-field problems or major injuries on the field….. then he would more then likely be in line for a contract extension from the broncos. Or at the very least he will have the same if not much higher value to other teams.
The only way he would get away for nothing is if he doesnt something over the top stupid and destroys all his value.

by DW76 on Mar 7, 2010 4:52 PM MST up reply actions

Is the franchise tag not part of the current CBA?

I agree with your point, I’m just curious if we can assume that the franchise tag will be around next year.

by Kgrone on Mar 7, 2010 4:53 PM MST up reply actions

Good point

This is uncharted territory. There are no rules for next year, basically. It will be whatever they agree on later. I would certainly think franchise tags will still be around, but no opinion there is better than another. Crazy year

Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

by Alex on Mar 7, 2010 4:58 PM MST up reply actions

Agreed...

But at the same time there are advantages to him being gone. If the team captains really did ask for him to be benched the last game of the year, then there is some value in him being gone as well. I’d like to get a 1st and 3rd and I think he’s worth it, but it doesn’t appear that teams are gonna pony up at this point.

by Kgrone on Mar 7, 2010 4:44 PM MST up reply actions

And do you think the current stables of receivers....

without Marshall is going to get it done? I don’t.

I think it is a big assumption that gettting rid of BM...

will lead to a good O and D line.

"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!

by bonaire on Mar 7, 2010 4:52 PM MST up reply actions

Can't disagree....

I think BM is on the way out anyway. I also think that WR is one of the least important positions on a team. I may get flamed for that, but if I could pick any position to have an impact player at, I think WR might be ahead of only K and P.

I think BM is gone at some point, anyhow, and if we lose him I would rather put the compensation towards the lines rather than trying to replace him.

by Kgrone on Mar 7, 2010 4:55 PM MST up reply actions

Well I can't argue....

that a top notch O-line and D-line win football games and can make average players at other positions look better than average. I just don’t see us improving by getting rid of BM.

"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!

by bonaire on Mar 7, 2010 4:57 PM MST up reply actions

Sure...

And my reply at the top of this post stated that I think he’s worth more than a 21. Just that a Pouncey (or Iupati, but I think he’ll be gone) would help lessen the sting of losing BM. I’d rather keep him for on field production, but I also don’t want a guy who throws a fit the last week of the season with the playoffs on the line (Scheff should be cut before brought back imo also) is maybe not someone we want on the team. If I can get decent compensation for him then I will choose to find the silver lining, and be excited about other possibilities.

by Kgrone on Mar 7, 2010 5:00 PM MST up reply actions

I couldn't agree more

Football starts on the lines. The more solid our O line, the better our running game becomes. Which means, the less we NEED and RELY on BM. The guy is a top WR obviously. I don’t about all of this top 3 or 5 or whatever, but yeah, he’s a stud. I support whatever McDaniels decides to do to make the Denver Broncos better.

by atwaterlegend on Mar 7, 2010 4:53 PM MST up reply actions

And the simple fact...

that he doesn’t want to be here. His nephew plays football at Mullen High School in Denver and they just sold his condo. Could just be coincidence I suppose. Its still pretty early. Teams will start coming around. Denver is in a win, win situation here.

For a reason that I can't really put a finger on,

I really like their coach. Pretty sure it has something to do with watching Hard Knocks on HBO. Either way, they def have a history of working with trouble. I think he’s more than a 21… opps… Kgrone just said that. Too bad we can’t decide what offer we take. Interest will pick up pretty soon, as always, once UFA’s are picked clean.

The more buyers....the more the bounty!!!!!

This could turn into a negotiations bonanza! But, I do NOT want Iupati! Dude’s overvalued and there’s much better potential and value in rounds 3-5. We need STUDs at skill positions…..LB/DT/S/WR/RB/QB….

by Hogblog on Mar 7, 2010 5:01 PM MST reply actions

be careful about more buyers

The idea of more buyers can also work against the Broncos. It is a very thin line they are walking, because a team like the Bengals can choose to bypass negotiations by just signing him to an offer and forfeighting the 21st pick.
At some point demand may push his value about that 21st pick, and the Bengals could decide to just put an end to everything by signing an offer

by DW76 on Mar 7, 2010 5:05 PM MST up reply actions

I dont know if that's an option

The contract offer will obviously include guarenteed money, and the moment they match the offer I am assuming they will be stuck with the guarenteed portion of the contract. If that is true, then there is no chance they will pay 15-20 million for the right to trade him for better compensation

by DW76 on Mar 7, 2010 5:09 PM MST up reply actions

If we can trade his rights...

Could we not trade the right to match? You could be right, but I would assume that until he is signed to a new contract (not just an offer sheet) that his rights could be traded.

by Kgrone on Mar 7, 2010 5:10 PM MST up reply actions

my understanding of it

Is that, when he gets signed to the offer sheet. At that very moment he is essentially under contract, and the only thing left to decide is if it will be for that contract with the broncos or for that deal with another team (who thus forfeits their first round pick.)

Don’t quote me on that

competition is a good thing for the Broncos, however I believe when they chose the first round tender, they thought the competition would be limited to 1-3 teams. If 3 or 4 teams get involved in this, then there is potential for his value to go past the 21st pick (or the lowest pick in the first round of the teams involved) and at that point it would be better if they had the first and third round tender on him.

by DW76 on Mar 7, 2010 5:14 PM MST up reply actions

You could be right....

I’d be interested to find out…not sure where to go, though.

by Kgrone on Mar 7, 2010 5:15 PM MST up reply actions

im not sure either

i suppose i shouldnt be suprised given the Bengals risk taking on character, but i am still a little suprised that there name is being put into the Marshall sweepstakes. With ochocinco having demanded a new deal for 2 years now, and there shift towards being a power running team and playing great defense. I thought they would be more likely to go another route for finding a WR…… I was expecting to hear their name in connection with Sheffler instead of Marshall

by DW76 on Mar 7, 2010 5:19 PM MST up reply actions

then we just keep him. no problem. we have made it pretty clear we’d be willing to keep him if nobody pays enough. even if that isn’t true, that has to be in the back of Seattle’s minds right now.

by black_knight101 on Mar 7, 2010 5:10 PM MST up reply actions

I like Iupati, but wouldn't be against players at other positions....

I just know that Iupatie and Pouncey figure to go late 1st in a lot of mocks I"ve seen, and those are players I like. I’m not sure who else is in that range, but I’d absolutely be for a DL LB or CB if there’s good value. I think we’re set at S for now, so unless there’s a steal I’d rather avoid S and RB.

Cmon Seattle...better PONY-UP now

IF you snooze, you may lose! And you know what, there’s more teams out there with higher 1st rounders than Cincy who are watching from the sidelines just waiting for a chance to throw into this game. In a few days, your #6 pick may seem like a bargain?

by Whidbey Bronco on Mar 7, 2010 8:08 PM MST up reply actions

i’m hopeful this is the sentiment right now. the broncos should start blitzing rumors that they are getting tons of calls but aren’t listening to any of them, which might force the Seahawks to act quickly while he is in Seattle.

by black_knight101 on Mar 7, 2010 5:09 PM MST up reply actions

I think that if Cincinnati is serious, they'd better get on their horse and make a deal.

I expect SF to be a player – they would like a complement to Crabtree and Davis for Smith to throw to. GB could use another big target as well. Seattle was really window shopping. They have way too many needs. Probably thinking something for nothing. That ain’t gonna fly with this deal.

Sayre, you mentioned Demaryius Thomas – I will bet McXanders will be interested in him. Also Jacoby Ford. If we don’t add more OL in the FA, we will draft 2 OL guys – early rounds.

Thanks, Sayre.

The fact that this Cincy beat writer is calling out Schefter is preposterous

though Schefter DID cover the Broncos before, I do NOT believe him to be conspiring with Denver to get top dollar trade value for BMarsh. THat would be a major hit to his credibility, and ESPN may even dismiss him over it if he lied about something like that.

could be a case

of the Bengals saying it is a “smokescreen” to the beat writer in an effort to buy them more time, and more importantly to keep his value from going up. Lombardi said on NFLN today, that this is one large game of poker…. I would compare it to chess, and potentially compare the beat writer to the bengals setting up a pawn. However i would just be basing that on Schefter’s credibility

Could be some guys trying to make a name for himself.....

If Cin doesn’t get Marshall it will all be played out like they were never in it and he looks like he was on top of his game. (we don’t know much about which suitors were left out in the Cutler trade because that usually doesn’t come out). Even if there’s interest, it’s unlikely that CIN gets BM. If they do get him then he rips the CIN FO and says they’re morons and he got bad info. It’s a low risk gamble to get his name out there.

I’ll take Schefter’s word over anyone out there.

Actually Reedy tends to know a lot about the Bengals

He’s pretty pathetic with the rest the league, but he does seem to have an inside track to the Bengals — probably more than Schefter, I’d think. Reedy thinks that the two WRs that the Bengals are looking at are TO and Antonio Bryant.

That said, this may also be a smokescreen from the Bengals, since they don’t like to rush things in free agency. Saying they’re not interested will keep Seattle from panicking and pulling the trigger faster. But if Marshall does decide to come to Cincinnati, someone give him my phone number: I’m looking to sell my house :-)

by DCJ on Mar 7, 2010 6:02 PM MST reply actions

Schefter

is the best INSIDER for NFL info and I so I trust he is right when he says the Bengals are interested in BM. I follow Adam on twitter also because he usually has info before anyone else (Jay Glazer is great also) and I am going to watch the NFL draft on ESPN instead of the NFL Network simply because Adam works for ESPN now.
I have no doubt we will get great value for BM because Marshall and his agent can talk to teams until April 15th so that is still about 5 weeks away and I think at least one team will bite on Marshall between now and then that gets us a top 20 pick in the first round.

The fact that they are unwilling to hear trades, maybe they just want someone else to do the negotiating so they dont have to worry about offending Marshall with too low of an offer

Shaun Hill

49ers signed Carr to backup/compete with Alex Smith. This is supposed to lead to the cutting of Shaun Hill, is it just me or would Hill be an upgrade to Chris Simms? Neither of them would beat out Orton in my opinion, but Hill would come in probably cheaper than what Simms is making right now. And if we are signing a backup QB just based on how many spleens they have you would have to go with Hill :)

It would definitely have an impact on the ongoing negotiations for FA’s. I’d like to get some word on Edwards. I mean if things were going well we’d have heard something right? This would the definition of irony...

…since the Bengals have been historically tight with money. The idea that they would part with the coin Marshall craves and the 21st pick in the draft seems like a reach. They value elite receivers so much that they essentially told Chad Ochocinco in his prime that he was welcome to kiss their tiger stripped butts.

I’d say Scheffter is throwing spaghetti once again. Its nothing new.

ON BARGAINING

I won’t attempt a full treatment here but I wanted to point out that information is notoriously unreliable in this area. Teams who would be interested in Marshall have a material interest in appearing not to be interested, and, as reported above, smokescreens (i.e., reports of interested teams) can be disseminated to drive up Marshall’s value. Moreover, reports within the media are extraordinarily unreliable because declaring one’s bargaining position is counterproductive to that position, so no team will tell a reporter of their interest in a FA because it would hurt their interests. And the report of a smokescreen also falls into this area since the Bengel reporter wouldn’t know the truth and the team would lie to him in any case. We can say that if the Bengels have an interest then they wouldn’t want it to be known, so the smokescreen report could itself be a smokescreen.

no goats, no glory.
