NFL Network's Mike Lombardi reports that free agent NT Jamal Williams is already in Denver on Monday to take a physical.
Williams has a meeting with the Saints lined up for later in the week, but the Broncos may not let him make it that far. The 34-year-old is close to Denver line coach Wayne Nunnelly from their time together in San Diego.
What do you all think? Personally, I am not too fond of washed up, old, defensive lineman. We Bronco fans all remember how well those kind of free agents worked out for us in the past...

if the price is right
I’m good with having depth, especially with his injury history recently. He has been a beast when he’s healthy.
I'm glad we had this talk. -- TJ Johnson
When healthy...
Not many guys can absorb a double team like Jamal Williams. He only played one game last year, and the year before that he had one of his better seasons as a pro, so I wouldn’t quite call him washed up. If he’s healthy he will make an impact. This is a smart move if we make it.
A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is drudgery. But a vision with a plan can change the world.
McD is making clear this offseason...
…that he wants lots of different players rotating in on our defensive line. He probably felt like our defensive line wore out last year, and we need to be able to rotate players better.
I’m all for this. That being said, based on speculation on Edwards and Hadnot, we may not be willing to pay players coming off of injuries as much as they want.
also based on last years free agency/draft, seems to me like Dan Williams is looking more and more like a strong possibility :)

Tim:
In answer to your question, I like it – in favor of it. Your point is a strong one, very valid on the old regime’s approach and track record of free agency. I try to not compare this management with the old management. Brian Dawkins is a great example of “old”, “washed up” guys working out. I’m def open to the idea of an upgrade at NT.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!
Time out...
It’s better than that. I’m pretty stoked that we’re going to sign him. He’s better than made out to be. No doubt people will line up to say yes once he’s signed.

Jamal Williams reminds me a lot of Kenny Peterson, or even Dawk in a way...
washed up to their old teams, and considered “too old” or something similar, but in reality, they just need new scenery and a fresh start. Dawkins changed the entire landscape of “old” to me. All of a sudden, that guy that once was considered “washed up” just got himself into the Pro Bowl again by smashing fools all over the field.

also, Lombardi suddenly has appeared as having the best source within the Broncos organization. if you watch him on NFLN, he gets excited and talks a lot more when they start talking about the Broncos
It appears so as he's the only one saying the Bengals won't pay and the Broncos aren't negotiating BM

Lombardi is a Stud
because, of course, he is a fellow Italian and he’s one of the few MSM members to treat the Broncos fairly. It’s nice to see that there’s a different perspective than those from hacks like John Clayton

He vibes being a big time McD fan.
He went toe – to- toe with Dukes during the combine, but Dukes wasn’t bright enough to realize he was getting handed his head.
Dukes…that dude gets my goat like no other.

hahaha, I like how you didn't say "he put up his dukes against Jamie Dukes"
That was a terrible show, by the way. Put up your dukes lasted like 6 weeks. Then they just made it a segment on NFLN so that Jamie didn’t feel as bad about himself.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

I know it's mostly a media story when people do it
but can we all chip in and buy a billboard to fire Jamie Dukes that can be displayed outside the NFLN studios?

I will let McX decide
if he is worth signing, but I don’t feel too good about damaged goods. Now Green, yes let’s sign that big boy.

This seems like a no brainer...
…if Williams has realistic contract demands. I’d hate to see crazy money thrown at him, but Denver’s run defense is automatically better every snap he can take.

I'd rather have the NEXT Jamal Williams.
But, if the price is right and he still has some gas left in the tank, he’ll do short term.

It's hard to explain how much I love the strategy of building depth
I know that comparisons to the old management are becoming taboo, but it’s nice to see depth be a focus, rather than a casualty of big-ticket, cap-busting signings.
Signing older guys works just fine for where the team, is, too — they have shorter contracts that will come up once the home-grown replacements are in place. It’s wonderful how this stuff comes together

man..
how good would, Bannan, Williams and Green be as a free agency d line class..
by HorseStance on Mar 8, 2010 3:39 PM MST via mobile reply actions
I love the depth
I’m waiting for the physical – this is a guy who has had more surgeries than sunflowers have seeds. That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have a year or two left, but there is a serious reason that SD let him go shop around. I appreciate the Nunnely link, and if he can pass the physical, he’ll come in and take up a lot of space fast. He’s slowed, and as several fans have noted, he’s most likely to be essentially a rotational player. Is that a bad thing? Heck no. I’m more excited about Green, and I hope that we can work that one out.
And I am beginning to like the Dan Williams call. Not convinced, yet – the O line issues are also major – but starting to lean that way.
Don't say rebuild - say reload...
What does this do
to the rotation up front…..throw out some hypothetical scenarios people. Let’s be saucy and assume we sign both Green and Williams.
Green Williams McBean
Does Fields move over to DE or Marcus Thomas…..what about Baker?
Also
While the situations aren’t the same, remember that one of the best two-gappers in NFL history (Ted Washington, once a Bronco) played until he was like 73 years old*.
*Slight exaggeration, possibly.

I would rather have Green if we can only have one,
BUT, if he passes the physical, he would be part of the rotation maybe when we have the other team backed up on the goal line and we need a fresh big body to get a push. If he played 30% of the time I would assume he’d be good to go and a good addition. I think it all hangs on that physical, make sure we take along look at those knees and that repaired bicep!!!
On a side note
does anyone recall at the end of the season McD saying that the staff would get down to business and try to identify the reasons for the season going down the crapper. Judging by the teams FA activity thus far, it looks like they’ve definitely identified a problem area.
Jarvis Green is scheduled to arrive in Colorado at 10:30pm tonight for his complete visit with the Broncos tomorrow.
If anyone missed it..
Here is an article about Jarvis Green and his approach to free agency this year..
Jarvis Green takes his time looking for right fit
Seems like if he is coming to see us he is serious about playing here.
Jamal Willians,
Would be a great pickup for run stoping, and then rotate out on passing plays. If he is healthy again I’d say he has a lot more in the tank that he is being given create for by SD.
Also, if Green is healthy and we can get him signed we just added great depth to our line without having to worry if a rookie can fill the spot or not.
Both look like great short time deals to me.

we could end up with oldest, hungriest and meanest D-line in the NFL……..

"Hope sees the invisible, feels the intangible and achieves the impossible."
pair that with the oldest, meanest, hungriest secondary..
just need a couple of old, mean linebackers.. and then SB here we come.. lol
SD releases him to resign him
and Denver beats them to the punch. That would be a nice story line, if the guy can still plug the hole.
"All we're trying to do is win the *********** game!" -- Josh MF McDaniels tearing into his offensive line after three false starts in the red zone. The tirade turned the tide of the game, and the Broncos dominated from that point on.
That would be something huh?
I have no problem with him as NT just as long as he still has it and is healthy too because I know he was out all of last year.

Wish I was more optimistic....
But I believe we’d have much better off with Dwan Edwards along w/Justin Bannan. Then add on Jamal for rotational depth at Walmart prices given his age. I hate to sound negative, but at 28 yrs old, I really thought we were on to a good situation with Edwards…?
Oh well, that chapter’s done…on to Jarvis Green? OMG, not another Jarvis…

Seattle?
I think Lombardi was talking about the Seahawks being active in free agency and that the Seahawks were bringing in Watson for a visit.
Looking forward to the second year in McDaniels system! Royal will tear it up! GUARANTEED!!

Fat fingers on an Ipod
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
It was supposed to be a reference to the signing of Sam Adams the first time Denver tried to switch to a 3-4 under Jim Bates.
Dude was huge and had been a stud at NT, but he had no more gas in the tank by the time he got to Denver.
Didn’t even finish the season.
And that’s my concern about Williams. When big DL’s go downhill, they go fast. It’s possible that he has one or two good years left, but I think if we base our expectations on past performance, we’ll be sorely disappointed.
Could be, and that's why my excitement for this is tempered.....
But he also had a very dominant season before this last one that was lost to injury. To this point we haven’t seen a drop off in his play, only an injury that cost him 15 games. I’m hopeful he has another 2-3 years, and at worst he can help mentor some of the younger guys.
I'm hopeful too
Though what we have seen is the tendency for players of his age and body type to hit the wall.
I reeeeeally hope I’m wrong.
Well . . .
Personally, I am not too fond of washed up, old, defensive lineman. We Bronco fans all remember how well those kind of free agents worked out for us in the past…
You mean like the Browncos, Tim? Ekuban served the Broncos quite well, and Myers was good depth, while Courtney Brown was a guy loaded with talent who succumbed only to his knee problems. Moreover, last year’s additions, while not a gaggle of superstars, still added to an upgrade in the line. Fields was more than solid.
I think FAs generally have worked out fairly well . . .
BILLY THOMPSON GOT SHAFTED!!
Guys, i got the Watson info from a Broncos fan site on twitter, however i cant find any info to confirm
He may have heard Browns, not Broncos
http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/Wilson-Patriots-taking-trips.html
there is more about Green visiting the Broncos and Watson visiting Seahawks/Browns
Bleeding Orange & Blue in The Netherlands
That was what I was thinking with my earlier post...
Other free agent DLs might have worked out, but in terms of body type and role, Jamal Williams really resembles Sam Adams.
I think Williams would be a hindrance..kind of
in a no huddle situation….hard to get a guy that big out quickly… We got burned by that a few times last year.
But I do like the move! Nobody’s mentioned yet that we would get the inside dish on SD, and he would be extra motivated 2 games each year :)
Green coming in also makes me happy! Our lines could very well be repaired when the draft begins.
