Restricted free agent Tony Scheffler is still "likely to be traded," according to the Denver Post. Scheffler doesn't fit in coach Josh McDaniels' system and the two clashed often last season. Even though McDaniels has said that the talented pass-catching tight end could be back in 2010, no one is buying it. Look for Scheffler to be dealt in exchange for a mid-round pick.

Rotoworld

Not sure where they got this information as the source they quoted mentions nothing about Scheffler being traded for a mid round pick. However, a 4th rounder is about what I see him valued at and I would be quite happy with that deal.

You gotta think that Shanny would be interested for a 4th rnd pick

Why. The Redskins have two good TEs and one of them is younger than Scheff.

In my opinion.

by McGeorge on Mar 9, 2010 10:36 AM MST up reply actions

Bingo!

It makes no sense for the Skins to pull the trigger on this trade for two reasons: 1) already set at TE and 2) they only have 5 picks in this year’s draft and have to address their OL.

IDK

1) Perhaps b/c he likes what Scheff brings to the table
2) Most teams carry 3 TE’s
3) His #1 TE is coming off a major ankle injury (break) that landed him on IR
4) Shanny’s made stranger moves in the past than something like this

touche' with Number 3.

Cooley is straight hurt and….being in the DC Area….its all we have heard about for a while. but…I think it IS possible for Shanny to go after shef….but I see a trade not pics if the skins only have 5. Shanny loves to draft.

The key word being "interested"

While I don’t see it as a likely landing spot for Scheff given that Wash only has 5 picks and they have many holes to fill with TE not being among them, I do think that Scheff’s falling price will garner some interest from Shanny.

Here’s a scenario to ponder: If Cooley has any enough trade value still (due to his injury) perhaps Shanny would consider giving a 4th for Scheff and then trading Cooley for a 2nd. If you’re Shanny would you rather have Scheff, Fred Davis, & a 2nd or Cooley, Davis, & a 4th? With Shanny, nothing is outside the realm of possibility.

3rd round at least

I think think tony is at least worth 3rd rounder in this years draft. If it were up to me I’d trade for a 3rd in 2010 and a 5th in 2011. And if nothing goes our way then just keep him.

I’d be shocked if we got anything better than a 6th for Scheff.

Some team is going need to sign him to a new deal.

My guess, we trade Tony in a few weeks for a 6th rounder.

In my opinion.

5th or 6th in 2010.

Maybe a 4th or 5th in 2011.

No way we get a good pick for this “the player”.

i think that might be low

a lot of people around here think he is worth a 2nd! ok maybe he has a lot of talent but not proven at all. i think we should get at least a 5th and hopefully a 4th

There is a reason the Bears want to dump Olsen

and sign Manumaleuna. Martz does not utilize the TE in his passing game. Strictly blocking….Olsen isn’t a blocker and Sheffler not much better.

So we trade...

Scheffler to some team for a pick and trade that pick for Olsen.

I’d love to have Olsen.

Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?

Why, so we can’t throw him the ball? We don’t need another pass catching TE. Scheff is one of those and a good one at that.

We need another WR in case Royal sucks again.

In my opinion.

how come we couldn't get a 5th for him last year and now people say 4th?

You could get Olsen/Clark for just as cheap. There’s too many catching (non-blocking) TE’s on the market if you ask me to expect anything more than a 7th for him.

Why would

we be ok getting anything less than his tender?
I mean we obviously did that for a reason

Right but that only feeds into my question

Why did we Tender him at all instead of straight trade talks or whatever? Why Tender him higher than we expect? I guess I just don’t understand the process because it looks to me like….(if we aren’t going to get a 2nd) that McD wants to keep him…

I don’t know what would be best for the team, but….why tender 2nd rnd. if we can’t get higher than a 4th? we could have just straight up offered him up for a 4th or 5th couldn’t we?

if we didn’t tender him, he would be an unrestricted free agent and we get nothing

a 2nd round tender [his draft slot] is the lowest we could tender him at

Running my errands...

…I was getting a chuckle trying to visualize Bus Cook trying to sell an 2nd round offer sheet for Tony Scheffler. Here you’ve got that Cutler/Marshall mentality, without even a sniff of the actual talent or production. I’m sure he is a hot commodity.

My guess is a Seneca Wallace type deal. 2011 conditional. A 6th this year would be a coup.

But, correct me if I’m wrong, I don’t think Denver can flat out release him, as the tender comes with the provision that it be offered with the good-faith intent of employment.

"We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars."-- Oscar Wilde

by PredominantlyOrange on Mar 9, 2010 11:25 AM MST reply actions

Dumb Question....maybe

I’m not sure if I understand correctly or not but doesn’t the player have to sign the tender before Denver can actually explore trade options other than a team signing the player and Denver either matching or not? I’m thinking back to last year when Julius Peppers wanted out of Carolina but didn’t sign an offer so they couldn’t explore trade options. Maybe that was a different situation I’m not sure but with all these RFA and all this discussion talking trades got me thinking and wondering if these guys haven’t signed their offer can Denver even explore trading them?

by golfsnow on Mar 9, 2010 11:51 AM MST reply actions

The Broncos still own their rights, even if they do not have them signed to a contract

Denver can trade their rights to another team. The other team would then sign them to a long term deal.

Ooops

Sorry I hit enter instead of the Tab key. So that must be the difference in a RFA and a team using the “Franchise Tag” on an UFA. Thanks for the information.

by golfsnow on Mar 9, 2010 1:11 PM MST up reply actions

players can be traded once they sign their tender

The Broncos can also grant permission for Cook to shop Scheffler to other teams. I believe Peppers was trying to exert pressure on Carolina by making it hard for them to sign UFAs, which he could do by refusing to sign his tender. They still had to set aside cap room even though they couldn’t trade him until he signed. I covered this issue at that time so I remember some of the details. It seemed like an odd strategy but it did hamstring their FA signings. It was odd because he wanted a trade, although he may have wanted one on his terms. The exclusive (versus non-exclusive) franchise tag prevented him from conducting his own negotiations with whoever he wanted.

Nobody cares whether Scheffler talks to other teams so there are no issues present such as tampering. He’s free to sign an offer sheet because he’s not tagged with the franchise tag. I see they changed the NE tag afterwards, but you’re correct about his not signing his tender initially and how it affected the team.

no goats, no glory.

by Colinski on Mar 9, 2010 7:02 PM MST up reply actions

Wait a minute, you guys are insane.....

Scheffler was a higher pick than Doom or BM…..

If we can get a 1st for BM or Doom then why couldn’t we get one for Scheff?

Me and Bus were just talking about this over lunch……

Anyway, I suppose if we can’t get a 1st then a 4th seems about right. Honestly, I’d rather cut the guy than have him back. Anyone who quits on the season while we’re still in the playoff race is not a player I want in the locker room.

by Kgrone on Mar 9, 2010 11:56 AM MST reply actions

Sorry...

Maybe I didn’t word it well enough…was making a play on Cook’s comments that he couldn’t believe Scheff was tendered lower than BM and Doom….

I agree he’s gone some way or another and good riddance. If I’m making decisions I have no place on my team for a guy who ’can’t wait for the season to be over" when the team’s still in the playoff hunt. If we can’t get a pick I say cut him straight out.
