Boost for DL....!

http://sports.espn.go.com/boston/nfl/news/story?id=4979830

ESPN - and Adam Schefter - are reporting that the Broncos have signed two defensive linemen - Jarvis Green, formerly of the Patriots, and DT Jamal Williams, previously of the Chargers. I hope the brains trust see more in these re-treads than I do. I remain to be convinced...

Anybody have any more information on the status of Rex Hadnot and Dwan Edwards? Any team picked up their tabs yet? Last I heard, Hadnot was visiting the Cards, but was being offered a reserve/backup role. Surely he'd be looking at a starter role in Denver as a center....?

In terms of AFC West rivals, a couple of reports rumours have Thomas Jones signing with the Chiefs, and LT to visit with the Vikes.

LOL! Maybe we should just sign as many AFC West waivers as possible….no, forget that. That would include Javon Walker…..!

Yeah – just messin’! Former players – with the notable exception of Shannon Sharpe – are like ex-girlfriends. You don’t go back….!

I like the moves.

I consider today (and last week) an upgrade, and did not expect to achieve the total amount of upgrade we are seeing in just single FA season. I anticipate further upgrades in the next few seasons until we have the best YOUNG DL, but we needed to have solid depth immediately. (BTW, I am not part of braintrust).
I am still hoping Hadnot comes back to us, but options in OL seem limited in FA.

Glad to hear you’re not a paid up member of Project McX!

As I said though, I think both players are re-treads, arguably less so in the case of Williams – especially if he can get, and more importantly, keep healthy. Green only started for the Pats cos they traded Seymour. He’s always struck me as an above average reserve, nothing more I’m sad to say. If so, I think you’d have to project him as your starting NT, wouldn’t you?

Given the rotation we now have – Ronnie Fields, Justin Bannan (think this may be a very good pickup), Jamal Williams, Ryan McBean, Marcus Thomas and Chris Baker – it would also send out some subliminal messages that we may not be too active in drafting a DL, which would be a shame given the depth of the draft this year at that position. I quite fancy the idea of Dan Williams. But on the flipside, maybe we’re going to go for McClain, or dare I say it, a QB??? The moves – and only time will tell if they are successful – certainly give us some flexibility in the draft. I hope to be proved wrong about the draft strategy…. Thanks for posting guys.

Sorry, deleted a bit there without rearranging the sentence – meant to say I’d have to favour Williams as the likely starter. Sorry for the confusion….

by MileHighMan on Mar 9, 2010 4:48 PM MST up reply actions

Yeah, Williams likely the starter, and "retreads" is harsh but technically accurate.

My point is the upgrade. Takes time to get to the top. The DL depth will give a chance to keep him (Williams) fresh, he may be rotated more than a typical “starter”. Overall, I am going to judge the DL by performance of the unit, not the accumulation of grades of the individuals. I like the depth and versatility of our DL as of today, but feel the age factor means we should not pass on a top DL prospect in the draft. If we want to reach the top and STAY there, we need highly productive YOUNG players in the trenches; you don’t usually find these at an affordable price on FA.
So, I like the moves, but don’t view this as a finished product. If football is played 2011, and if we do well enough in 2010 with the players we have accumulated, I would hope to see the next few years focus on accumulating the draft picks needed to get the youth and talent all along the DL and OL. Eventually “retreads” as can serve as depth. I just don’t see that as possible this season. You get that one highly attractive player and the rest of the positions of need are stuck with “retreads” or “knock-offs”. I suppose I view last years Haynesworth deal and this years Peppers deal in that manner. Overall, I think we are nearer in beliefs than it might first have appeared, but I view it as a necessary evil. Of course, I AM getting old; maybe I have just lost that “rush-to-accomplish-it-now” feeling.

Know the age thing….the big 4-0 in June……still, one silver lining is that the wife has already secured tickets for the Broncos game at Wembley at Hallowe’en! As I said to BShrout, I think perhaps I’ve been a bit hasty in dissing the Jamal and Jarvis deals. Let’s see how it pans out. Thanks for the comments.

Not sure I'm in agreement with
Green only started for the Pats cos they traded Seymour. He’s always struck me as an above average reserve, nothing more I’m sad to say.

Over the last 3 years Green was on the field for:

09 — 321/941 defensive plays (34%) which was 1st on the team in terms of playing time.
08 — 389/920 defensive plays (42%) which was 3rd on the team behind Seymour (1st) and Warren (2nd)
07 — 782/933 defensive plays (84%) which was 2nd on the team behind Warren; Seymour was 3rd.

We live in an age when instant gratification isn't fast enough

that's crazy that 09 was his lowest percentage of defensive plays but highest on the team in pt

Because Montana has no professional sports, I gotta support the land of my birth.

Socrates was once executed for 'trolling'.
^Needs explaining: don't call someone asking uncomfortable, slightly antagonistic questions trolls. In all odds they probably just want to learn. It's real easy to differentiate a 'Socratic' post from a trolling one (unless you're a resident of WCG).
^Needs further explaining: I have yet to post anything on WCG, don't worry, I'm not trying to rationalize anything I've done. I've just lurked over there and man, they are the model of post-peloponnesian war Athens.

suggests he does best if playing well rested???

Roatation and situational substitution surely would be possible with the group we have accumulated.

Well, the stats tend to back you up, and make it difficult to argue. Maybe I am being harsh…and maybe we’re getting some real value there….. After reading the overnight comments and letting them sink in, I’m coming round to the revamped D-line. Woody Paige seems to like it too, but I’m not sure if that’s a vote of confidence or not. Still, if the dual aim was to beef up and get players familiar with the 3-4 in, it’s mission accomplished. Perhaps more credit is due to the front office. Good points made sir. Thanks.

Rex Hadnot

Ultimately, if the Broncos haven’t signed a C by the time he makes his decision, I think he will accept the Broncos’ offer. He started as a guard in Cleveland, and likely as you said would be looking at a reserve role in Arizona. I think with his injury history the Broncos were unwilling to give him the up front money he wanted, and he will realize that his market is not going to be as high as he anticipated. That he turned down a starting job in the first place raises questions to me, but ultimately I think he ends up in Denver at a price he may not have anticipated originally.

A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is drudgery. But a vision with a plan can change the world.
