Broncos re-sign Matt Prater

The Broncos remained busy on Tuesday, signing one of their own after bringing in two defensive linemen earlier in the day.  The team came to term with K Matt Prater on a contract to keep him with the Broncos for 2010.  Prater was a great story among what turned into a disappointing season for the Broncos.

Field Goals PAT
G 0-19 20-29 30-39 40-49 50+ FGM FGA PCT XPM XPA PCT pts
2009 - Matt Prater 16 0 - 0 14 - 14 6 - 8 8 - 10 2 - 3 30 35 85.7% 32 32 100.0% 122

Prater has yet to miss a kick in the 4th quarter in his 2 seasons as Broncos kicker, quite a feat itself.  Prater came a long way in 2009 from a intrasquad scrimmage at Invesco Field in August when the kicker was resoundingly booed after missing a couple of field goals.

Prater's 2009, at a glance -

Star-divide

Was 2-of-2 on field goals at Cin. (9/13), including a 50-yarder in the third quarter-his fifth field goal of 50 or more yards in his career... Made all three field goal attempts at Oak (9/27) while sending all six of his kickoffs into the end zone. (3 TBs)... Made a game-winning 41-yard field goal in overtime vs. N.E. (10/11)... Connected on all four field goal attempts (26, 32, 47, 24) vs. NYG (11/26) and sent all seven kickoffs into the end zone, resulting in five touchbacks. His 14 points scored and five touchbacks were both career highs... Tied his career high with 14 points (3/3 FG, 5/5 PAT) at K.C. (12/6).

Agree

Great news on Prater! Doom deserves a contract. The last article I read in the D.Post he is not very happy with the way the Broncos are handling his situation.

Up from 73.5% from 2008.

He also has improved on 40-49 yds. from the 5-11 he was in 2008.

Prater is the Moneyshot

Big pickups/resigns today… Does anyone know if there are anymore visits scheduled this week? I’d be completely satisfied with this free agency period, but Im just curious if we are going to pick up an OLman.. thanks!

Expected Points - Stats Dude?

After reading all of Dude’s stat analysis’ based on expected points, I would hazard a guess that this resigning would be worth around 50-60 expected points for the 2010 season just on touchbacks, let alone FGs.

I like the beef signed and/or agreed to for the DL today, but this is probably much bigger from an expected points standpoint. I like Rock and Roll! Put another dime in the jukebox baby!

Just for one year?

“… to keep him with the Broncos for 2010”. If I read it correctly, he got a one-year deal. This is strange. I sure hope it is more then that

I need to spend more days away from the internet...

This was a great day for the team, and I also hope that we try and lock up Prater to more than just one year at a time…

Nice move…I like Prater and think he is doing a solid job

Ironic

Atlanta casts off Prater for poor FG kicking…. he comes here, and gets a little mentoring from Elam, who then departs for Atlanta. Now Elam’s retired (I presume), and we appear to have a solid kicker right when we need it. Sweet! Here’s to many successful seasons in Orange and Blue, Matt!

Nice!

Remember when he was such a point of contention during preseason? He was put out there as just one more piece of evidence that McD was in over his head.

Well, I've changed my sig now, but I'd like to run with the gist of it...

Phooey to the people that booed him and called him a bum before the season started, and phooey to the people that called McD an idiot for not releasing him.

Nice to see you coming back, Matt!
