What I don't like about mock drafts.
I always find it interesting what people think so I like looking at mock drafts. But sometimes I feel people pick players whom they like but not considering if they are an upgrade over the players they will replace. So after the jump I'm going to list the 50 non-ST players that I believe would be on the 53 man roster and I would like to see people make a mock draft showing the player they like and who that person would replace. Thank You
Offense
QB 3
Orton, Brandstater, FA or draftee
TE 3
Graham, Quinn, Branson
RB 4
Moreno, Buckhalter, arrington, Hillis
WR 6
Marshall, Royal, Gaffney, Stokeley, Lloyd, McKinley
C 2
Fry, FA or draftee
G 4
Kuper, Hochstein, Olsen, FA or draftee
T 3
Clady, Harris, Polumbus
Defense
DL 7
Williams, Bannon, McBean, Fields, Thomas, Green, Baker
LB 8
Doom, Ayers, Davis, Williams, Haggan, Reid, Woodyard, Larson
CB 5
Bailey, Goodman, Smith, Jones, Carter
S 5
Dawkins, Hill, McBath, Bruton Barrett
I know I didn't list Sheffler because I think he will not be on the team next year conversely I left Marshall on the list because I think he will be on the team.

Can't count on Reid as he a surgery on done once before on a player.
Who knows where he will be come opening day. The linebackers have to be grouped in two separate units because the OLB’s and the ILB’s have different functions. We need a ILBer, Guard, Center. wide receiver, cornerback and quarterback. In that order as best as I feel anyway…
So you will be fine with,
Denver cutting Woodyard. Because rookies including 1st rounders may not be able to start at the beginning of the year. So there is a need to have Williams and Davis on the team and Larson is to valuable in to many areas to let go.
CB you would see Carter go because there is too much invested in the other 4.
G,C, WR, QB no controversies there.

This is a good idea
I will use it in my next mock, so make sure I reference this.
I think something I failed to address in mock ver. 22 was the DE/OLB position. Darrell Reid might not make it out of camp, and could very well start the season on the PUP. The more logical thing would be a cheap FA alternative, but I think that should have been a position I addressed in the draft.
Looking at your list, positions that need veteran upgrades are at OL (all positions, yikes!), DE/OLB, WR. I would be fine having a rookie start at ILB, WR, OG. That means if we trade Marshall, we can’t go wrong with two first round picks, choosing from two of Bryant, McClain, and Iupati assuming all are there.
I cannot wait for the draft, though I’m a little sad it’s stretched out over three days, that will help our process. Give us more time to think. Re-adjust our boards. I’d love to see the change in quality of drafts over time with this new method.
A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is drudgery. But a vision with a plan can change the world.
Rookie starters
I don’t have a problem with rookie starters either. ie. Ryan Clady. At ILB we are talking about taking Davis’ position. If someone comes in and clearly outplays davis in preseason, they will start. But, if it is close I think Davis will start. My reasoning is Davis is a deadweight backup. Meaning he can only play 1 position, isn’t a special teams player, and isn’t someone to develope. So if McClain starts, Davis is gone. IMO But if McClain is drafted and is developed into a starter then Woodyard is gone or you take a player from another position.
At OG, I don’t think there is a starter to develope a player behind or risk losing a fan favorite. Hochstein is Like backup Gaurd, Fullback, Tight end which is what makes him valuable but I don’t see him starting next year.
WR I believe your good or not there is not much to developing players at this position, so if they win the starting job let them do it.

Davis has been playing special teams
I didn’t see him there later in the season, so they may have replaced him, but one of his selling points was that both he and Haggan didn’t like coming off the field and stayed in on STs. Don’t let that distract you – I loved this article. Everything that we can do to interject a little reality into the mocks is great. It would also be good to add players’ specific uses in the Denver systems, as far as we can develop that. Good article, rec’d and appreciated!
It all starts with the lines
Don't forget to replace Jarvis Moss
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
Also
Not all draft picks are immediate replacements. Some picks are for the future.
Nice conversation, like where your heads at. Rec'd
Orton, Brandstater, FA or draftee
I’m on the fence here. It doesn’t look like we’re targeting a QB in FA, and drafting one seems more likely as it would give young Brandstater a chance to take the #2 spot. Coach sounds to at least be very open to the idea of TB backing up KO, er that’s what it sounded like to me.
That said, Chris Simms is still an issue. We all think Simms should be gone. But I’m not entirely convinced that McD isn’t willing to give him another chance. Like it or not, I really can’t think of a better option to guard against Orton’s ankles and TB’s youth. Aside from a QB in the top-ten of the draft, we couldn’t really expect a draft choice to be ready to play or take the #2 spot early on, so we might just be better served to keep Simms – depending on guaranteed money and roster bonus due date.
Moving on, I’d say Hillis is on the bubble. Center now becomes an absolute priority; No reason to believe Fry can start, leaving us with no sure starter. Did Hadnot ever sign with a team? If not, I def bet that we buy one of the top center/guards in the draft and just hope he’s ready to start right away.
Nine offensive linemen seems a little overkill, but I think your numbers are right on. We could drop a bubble -guy in TC once we’re confident in the new guys we brought in.
I might get shot for this, but I see Moss, Thomas and Baker completely expendable on DLine, Same with Reid at linebacker. Andra Davis was only signed through this year, so regardless of McClain v no McClain… We’ll need to make a decision there. The backups we have would be a substantial downgrade, even the fan favorite Spencer Larsen. I would hope we tackle that position now, rather go into crisis management next year like we’re at with OC this year.
Champ Bailey could be on the bubble. My guess is that he’s the kind of person who would renegotiate his contract and take the home-town discount, provided he feels we’re on the way to a a SB soon. I could see him leaving though, and I certainly could see us safeguarding against that by drafting another corner, or even two.
The point I’m making at CB isn’t about giving up on Phonz or ignoring Carter. But the team has such little faith in them that they went out to get Ty Law off the streets last year to play nickle. They again brought in a nickle this year. Without faith in Smith or Carter, we only have three servicable corners. We need to bring in another one, especially considering the possibility of Champ leaving.
Good luck with the Redskins Mr. Mike! I'll be watching and cheering for a non-Bronco team for the first time in my life. Well, except when they play the Broncos!

- Experienced backup QBs should be chomping at the bit ready to take over the starting position given the chance. An experienced QB that comes in and falls on his face when given the chance is a cancer on a team. Lets put it this way, Simms is the least player in the entire NFL that i would want to see on Denver’s 2011 53 man roster.
- Hillis is on the bubble. McD only keeps 4 RBs and Hillis is #4 right now. Buck and Arrington are older and Denver needs youth with more potential than what Hillis has.
- 9OL is a lot but Hochstein is more of a jack of all trades. This is an area of needed developement is why I put the # at 9. There might be a need to keep more players at another position and this is where I see it being taken from.
- Moss is gone. Denver chose to protect Baker to develope him last year. I’d say he’s staying. Thomas might get traded if there are no injuries and Denver feel it can upgrade the position with a player in the draft.
- I can understand what your saying about CBs and that is the way it looks. I’m just not convinced that the way it looks is the way it is. Smith looked real good in the first game ot two and then i don’t know what happened. But he showed he has the physical skills to play in the NFL. The same could be said about Carter except instead of the first game or two, it would be the last game or two. So maybe 1 Corner in the draft but, I doubt it. IMO

I just assumed that each point was equally as important, so you meant to do it.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

PS
Linebacker is a need to develope Inside as well as Out. I wouldn’t be surprised to lose Reid and Woodyard. Larson is #1 FB as well as backup LB and special teams Ace so I don’t see him leaving.

Great Idea!
It’s worth consideration, that’s for sure!

Roster implications are the most important part of a mock draft..
As EJ said in his roster evaluations post..
I encourage all of you, especially those particularly interested in the offseason, to go back to this step in the process and become reacquainted with the foundation of our team. It feels as though, with every mock draft and all the other rumored roster moves, we become further detached from that which should most inform and temper our speculation.
Excellant post and much needed advice.
If it can effect the many mocks stuck on favorite players and positions not even needed. Most won’t even use the jump after being asked a thousand times though. Rec’d.
