What I think about the Brandon Marshall situation

9 things:

1. He is a very good, but not great, wide receiver.
2. He would make the Broncos better next year than any rookie wide receiver, even if that rookie wideout will be a great wide receiver in the long run.
3. Marshall will not be happy until he gets a long term contract.
4. Marshall may only agree to a contract that pays him like a great receiver.
5. Marshall may not want to play in Denver (and may not play as well in Denver) as he would somewhere else due to off-field issues here.
6. Another team may be willing to pay Marshall like a great receiver.
7. Marshall's trade value is whatever someone will give up for him and should be considered totally independent of what his expected on-field value would be if he remained on the Broncos.
8. The Broncos shouldn't pay Marshall like a great receiver.
9. If 4 and/or 5, it is in the long term best interests of the Broncos for Marshall to play somewhere else, even if what the Broncos get back is less than the on-field value Marshall would be expected to provide if he was kept. Otherwise, they should sign him to a reasonable long-term contract. I would not bring him back on the tender.
