I’m happy and excited for Brandon to have an opportunity to do something that he’s wanted to do," McDaniels said. "And I’m also excited about the opportunities that we’re going to be presented here in the coming week with the draft and continuing to build our team and our roster the way that we want to do it.

Daniel Graham quotes:
"I’m not quite sure how the future would have been if he was around and how it would have affected everything."
"It seemed like he really wanted to get out of here," Graham said. "He wanted to go somewhere where he felt he was going to be happy, and he didn’t feel like that would be here in Denver."
And my favorite -
"I know looking from the outside it’s hard to understand what’s going on, especially when you lose players the caliber we’ve lost in the past couple of years, but it is the ultimate team sport," Graham said. "Not one player is going to win the Super Bowl for us."
I especially like the first part of that last quote – "I know looking from the outside it’s hard to understand what’s going on…
So my question to all of you who think McD forced him out – what benefit do you gain from keeping a player who doesn’t want to be there in the final year of their contract? Sure we might’ve franchise tagged him last season, but to what end? He wanted out. He packed up his locker at the end of the season.
He wanted out – McD simply obliged.
More than high profile players, more than highlight reels, more than anything else I want to see players who want to be Denver Broncos.
Because when you have a team that wants to be there and wants to play hard for their coach you find yourself winning games and maybe even a few Superbowls.
If these players want out – let them go. Why would you place so much emphasis on players who may or may not care about winning as much as getting paid when you KNOW that all Josh cares about is winning. Its tied to his success and his money, but more importantly I believe its tied to his character. You don’t get to where McDaniel’s is at his age by not being motivated. Pat Bowlen is not Al Davis and McDaniel’s is not Lane Kiffin.
He was good enough to lead the most prolific offense in football history. Why is he not good enough you lead your Denver Broncos?

agree ...
I’ve never understand the backlash against McD with this situation.
I mean if you say get the President job at McDonalds and your job is to turn the franchise around and you have a person there that doesn’t want to be there and is snickering and undermining what you are trying to do – you get rid of them, no matter how good they may be.
One person/player can’t win .. but that one person sure can lose.
I tend to think
That fans get attached to players and trust me I understand. So when people buy jerseys and become fans its like a piece of the team is leaving.
We want to have players that do well in fantasy football and make highlight reels, but like DG said – football is the ultimate team game.
It sucks losing a talent like Marshall’s and even Cutler’s, but they only played one role each out of eleven.
I mean, I hate to make parallels to basketball, but in a sport where ONE player can make a gigantic impact the LA Lakers lost the NBA Finals with arguably the most dominant starting lineup in basketball history – Shaq, Kobe, Payton, Malone, and Fisher.
Four of those players will be in the hall of fame within my lifetime.
But they still lost.
Its all about the team and the players who are speaking up are the ones who seemingly want to win the most. I’m fine with that but I guess some people don’t think we can get there.
And that falls on Josh’s shoulders.
I think if we can nab one very good player and 2 other solid starters in this draft we’re playoff contenders. Call me crazy, but I think Orton and Knowshon go crazy this year. And that will be on McD, too.
On a side note I have a couple of lists:
2001
Troy Brown 101 1199 11.9 60 5
David Patten 51 749 14.7 91 4
2003
Deion Branch 57 803 14.1 66 3
Troy Brown 40 472 11.8 82 4
2004
David Givens 56 874 15.6 50 3
David Patten 44 800 18.2 48 7
These are the top 2 WRs each year the Pats one the SB.
This list is the 2009 Broncos:
B. Marshall 101 1120 11.1 75 10
Jabar Gaffney 54 732 13.6 49 2
Marshall’s numbers look EXACTLY like Troy Brown’s in 2001, but with 2x as many TDs.
I think we can get along without Marshall. I’ll go out on a limb and say Gaffney can carry the load. He had 88 targets to Marshall’s 154.
Marshall’s catch % is about 66%.
Gaffney’s is 61%
Gaffney definitely benefited from Marshall’s presence though, so these numbers may be a moot point. I still think we go WR in the draft, but not first round and maybe not even 2nd.

I so often enjoy your posts I’m glad you enjoyed one of mine.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
Quit the bowing and scraping
He was good enough to lead the most prolific offense in football history. Why is he not good enough you lead your Denver Broncos?
He did it with one of the best QBs in the NFL and perhaps the greatest WR in NFL history. He has nothing even close here. McD is not God, and cannot do great things with journeymen. No, he isn’t good enough and he’s proving himself incompetent.
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and then used against you.
I'm not saying
The reason the offense was prolific was because of him.
I’m saying he was entrusted with the reigns and he did not dissapoint.
It has nothing to do with what that offense did, but if you think for one second that Belichic had no idea what he had at the end of the 2004 season when he promoted McDaniel’s you’re off your rocker.
I don’t expect that sort of return out of our current crop, but please try and take what I said in context. I never said he was responsible. I just said he was good enough to lead it.
Can you really argue that point?

Great post. My favorite part was, “more than anything else I want to see players who want to be Denver Broncos.” That’s the very reason Cutler’s jersey is still hanging upside down over my stairs.

Same
Its in my drawer. I almost gave it to a Bears fan, but when I remembered how I felt when I got that jersey.
To watch him force his way out was like a punch to the solarplexis.
That jersey is a reminder to get only the greats jerseys.

I quoted you in my sig over on Broncos Forums
I quoted this:

I also gave you a rec.

BILLY THOMPSON GOT SHAFTED!!
Great post Christian and Rec'd...
Marshall’s comments were good too.
He had nothing but positive things to say about Denver and McD. Sometimes things wind their natural course and are done…this was a positive for both parties and I wish BM well.
Those that cant coach, compete!
Failing to plan is planning to fail.
All I want is 53 Rod Smiths. Is that asking too much????
"Peyton Hillis didn’t rip the sleeves off his jersey, they flew off out of fear."

I hold no ill-will toward Brandon Marshall. I’ve been frustrated with him for some time, but I know his heart wasn’t in Denver.
It just frustrates me to no end that all these storylines playing out are placed right on McD’s shoulders. Cutler wanted out before McD, Marshall was probably going to be traded before McD, but now its all his fault.
And all I see in Josh’s is genuine passion and a desire to win.
I’m glad nobody holds me to such high standards in my first year of anything, but at least you know Bronco fans are passionate.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
Passion for the Broncos is somthing I think all of us have.
However when it leads to name calling I feel that it is misdirected. There is no need for that. I can also easily remember the resentment towards Dan Reeves in his first year or two as head coach of the Bronco’s. People didn’t want him to bring Georgia drawl and his “Dallas Cowboy” or “Texas” way of doing things. Most of that changed as soon as they started winning but there are still some fans out there who don’t like Dan Reeves to this day. As I said in a earlier fan post we need to exercise patience when it comes to the “youngsters” and to my way of thinking that includes the head coach and GM.
I could have been a Rhodes Scholar, except for my grades.

Not to mention the Saints this year:
M. Colston 70 1074 15.3 9
D. Henderson 51 804 15.8 2
As I recall, in 2005 while we had Rod Smith – he was in the twilight of his career. Then, we had Ashlie Lelie:
Rod Smith 85 1105 13.0 6
Ashley Lelie 42 770 18.0 1
Not “Beast” type catches. But those teams won. I just think we have too many members who give our offense an immediate “pathetic” mark because Marshall is gone. Watching Marshall play was fun – but our pass offense keyed on him too much. Yeah, he had catches – but they didn’t equate to wins.

Its the AVG
That we’re lacking.
Brandon Marshall’s average yardage is a very average 11.
Colston and Henderson were both up at 15.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
Excellent point that I should have addressed. Take the Indy game. 21 catches at around 9.5 yards per clip.

Indeed
Thats why I always get into arguments about Marshall being a deep threat.
His ability to break tackles is what gives me the chance to go all the way, but he’s not an over the shoulder guy like the Desean Jacksons of the world.
He’s an elite possession reciever with big YAC implications due to his size and ability, but while he catches EVERYTHING its typically not for a large gain.
I’m not trying to take anything away from him. I’m just saying our YPR average needs to go up.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
Gives HIM
I never have a chance to go all the way.
In the NFL that is.
Why does Madden suck at ranking the Broncos so much?
I disagree with you saying "EVERYTHING"
his 2nd year he only caught a little more than 50% of the passes thrown his way.

Are you on the rise? Are you falling down?

No head coach should have to put up with a premadonna, even if he says he isn't one.
Last year in training camp was the last straw for me and this will be my last ever comment on Marshall, his kicking the ball boys ball away to make him go chase it was an immature act for a grown man. This organization is better than that and to say the Broncos are all of a sudden a worser team is ludicrous. I believe the team can focus now on the future and winning. Daniel Graham’s comment speaks volumes of Marshall presense in the locker room and on the field and I believe he was being a little too kind with his choice of words. Distractions cause confusion and confusion causes failure. Good bye me first, hello TEAM…
