Tony Scheffler traded to Lions in 3-team deal
Tony Scheffler has been traded to the Detroit Lions in a 3-team deal that saw the Lions send LB Ernie Sims to Philadelphia and a 5th Round draft pick comes to Denver. The pick is Philadelphia's - #137 overall - via Cleveland.
The Broncos now have 6 picks in the Top-137 and are back in the 5th Round. They had originally traded away their 5th Round pick last summer to acquire LeKevin Smith from the Patriots.
The Lions get Scheffler, a talented pass-catching TE and a 7th Round pick from Denver.

Question is
What did the Eagles have to give up for Sims? I wouldn’t be shocked if this is a higher pick than any of us anticipate

I hope so too, Sayre. My day would be officially made if we found a way to get a 2nd for him, I’d still be excited with 70 though….

Makes me wonder what really goes on between player and staff behind closed doors….

So long Tony!
Sorry to see the all that potential leave; however, as has been pointed out by many, he never really put it all together and was not a good fit in the current system.
Whatever we get (I too hope it is at least a 3!), the importance of this draft just keeps getting bigger and bigger. We need some talent ASAP! I can think of about 7 positions (out of 22) that should not be up for grabs!

That's a good deal for the Lions.
and a bad deal for the Broncos (but a deal that had to be done anyway) Scheffler’s quite simply worth more to the lions than he is to the Broncos. I’m happy to get a 5th rounder for him, but the lions could end up getting an excellent pass-catching talent, if all works out for Scheffler (ie. injury, attitude, etc.)

A potentially good TE who will be an UFA next year
It’s not like he’s been to the pro bowl or anything. he’s talented and I wish him well in his homestate, maybe he’ll be more motivated than he was in Denver. I’m happy to get a 5th in a very deep draft. Heck, it could be the rare trade that benefits all three sides.

yeah, but scheffler's almost worthless to Denver, so getting anything for him is technically a profit
I loved the guy’s upside as much as anyone else, but c’mon – he was injured every year and never bothered to work on blocking. He’s just a large WR who lines up next to the tackle. not that there’s anything wrong with that – but that’s not what McD needs in his system.

A 5th round pick in a super deep draft
and one of the first picks of the 5th round for that matter. Is a hell of a lot different than a 7th rounder. Detroit now has 7 of those. Good luck to ‘em there. Honestly I don’t know what people expected here. The guy’s going to be a UFA next year. He’s been a disappointment in Denver. Maybe he’ll be motivated all over again in his home state. But I don’t know if people are seeing the full picture here. This is a really deep draft and Denver has a lot of needs. Scheffler wanted out. He would’ve been gone for nothing after next season, or possibly before this season as a cut.

Not great value, but something. It’s hard to say we lost in a deal where we traded away a player with no future in Denver.
It is what it is. Hopefully we make a good pick in round 5.

Well said.
Not to mention the reputation bonus for McDaniels. Sure, he’s not winning any popularity contests with the MSM, but I bet the players are loving him. He pulled the strings he had to and sent all of the high-profile players where they wanted to go. Cutler – CHI, Marshall – MIA, Scheffler – DET. We may or may not reap the benefits now, but they will come.
Jarvis Green had his heart set on Denver since our game against them in week 5 because of McDaniels player-coach relationships. I like this. This stuff is important to players, and players are the guys winning us games. This trade didn’t garner very good value, but it was an acceptable tradeoff considering the situation; which you covered well in your comment.

Just drafting Matthew Stafford, who is a heck of a player. He showed some amazing guts last year against Cleveland. They were sitting at the bottom of the barrel before, but they’re on the upswing. Now they’ve got Pettigrew, Scheffler, Calvin Johnson, Matt Stafford. That passing game is starting to look pretty good. If they can get some decent blocking for the QB they’ll be no worse of a package than the 2008 Broncos, hahaha. Scheff should fit right in.

is not going to happen when you’re talking about an injury riddlef TE. If you’re trading a 3rd for a player with potential, it’d better be a healthy QB or something of that value.
And don’t discount a 5th round pick either. There’s usually some interior O-line help to be found in round 5.

Yeah the value could have been better… but McDaniels is keeping his current players happy. This is a business world, and they know that sometimes teams have to deal away players for financial reasons or whatever. But the guys coming into Training Camp will work that much harder to make the final roster knowing that they’ll likely get traded somewhere bearable if not desireable.
Its important that the players want to play for you, McDaniels is covering that here.

A high 5th rd pick is equal to a 4th rd pick (and in this draft, 4th rd players are as good as 3rd players). we obviously have a player in mind. I predict its Armanti Edwards we use on that pick. Great job. The 7th rd is a total crapshoot.

basically, he's saying
A. He (kimbertr) has been saying we would get poor value for Sheffler.
B. Considering what poor value we got for Brandon Marshall
C. And especially considering what value has been gotten for other receivers in trade
kimbertr
I agree with everything you just said to the extent that it was communicated verbatim via keyboard except where you insinuated that it would not be good but not so much because that has moved on and we are all on the same page with several exceptions since it has been from the beginning when the whole scenario became a possibility even if certainty was the term used to describe when it all took place and everyone noticed that they were seriously alone in thinking that value could be had even if it weren’t there to be offered when they took it to the bank and approached Detroit after a serious BM could be made.

It was probably the best deal we could get. I’m sure we would have gotten more if we could have. I was hoping for a fourth but a tight end who can’t block and has attitude concerns isn’t that valuable. I had a HS football coach friend who went to training camp last year and said he didn’t like Scheffler because he was lazy in every practice he attended. So I am glad we got SOMETHING for him. How can anyone expect to get higher than a 5th for Scheffler?
Brandon Marshall- An elite WR went for two 2nd round picks.
Anquan Boldin- An elite WR went for a 3rd and a 4th
Santonio Holmes- A very good WR went for a 5th!
I just did not see how anyone thought we could net a 2nd or even a 3rd round pick for Scheffler in this trade market.
A pass catching tight end earned a 5th round pick. Makes perfect sense to me.

Don't get me wrong
I like having picks in the draft but we’re talking about a 7th round pick here. While for every Hillis/Barrett/Monsanto Popes you end up with more Blake Schlueter, Paul Ernster, Brandon Miree, Clint Mitchell, Ahmad Galloway, Chris Young, Leroy Fields, Justin Swift types.
The draft is a total crapshoot and if giving up that 7th was the difference in us getting that 5th, I’d MUCH rather take our chances at the top of the 5th than the middle of the 7th.
A little rudeness and disrespect can elevate a meaningless interaction to a battle of wills and add drama to an otherwise dull day.

Not really, he didn’t get a 5th, He was the difference between a 7th and a 5th. Trading Scheff gave us a 5th this year instead of a 7th. I think we could have done better.
Fix the line, Moreno will be fine.
The 3rd pick in the 5th round is of tremendously higher value then a 7th round pick.
Scheffler did not fit the system. He was not used. End of story. Other teams recognized this, and we received fair value for a pass catching tight end.

Yep.....
I was just about to post the same thing. How can folks be mad that we got a 5th for sheffler and a 7th. Everyone keeps saying how deep this draft is, so why not move up into the 5th round?? what kind of guys can we get there? Torrell troup, maybe micah johnson, those type of guys……looks good to me.
Can we stop the 'talented player' BS...
I mean, really, the guy didn’t fit the offense, for better or worse. No one’s fault. He gets to play in Detroit and the Broncos can continue to obtain players that fit what they want to do instead of shoe-horning unhappy players into a scheme that doesn’t fit them….
We must avoid over-valuing the Broncos talent.

The ‘Original Round’ tender. I just see a ton of over-valuing going on. For Scheffler and a 7th(#220 overall) the Broncos moved to the top of the 5th Round – and have a higher pick than the Steelers got for a Super Bowl MVP… Not too shabby

Good points, I just responded to Bfree’s post below, where he made the excellent point that we could have just cut him. The more I think about it, most teams probably would have just cut the guy and moved on, we let him hang around, did the leg work, and got something positive out of it. I guess that’s better than nothing.
Fix the line, Moreno will be fine.
I love the move for a disgruntled player who didn't fit our system/scheme...
We could of cut him and not get anything. This will give us an opportunity to get a value in a high 5th where most are gone by 220 and you might as well get the same player/talent in UCFA. We didn’t get shafted, we got value for a disgruntled player. Great job McX!

Couldn't tender him for less
So because of the tender they got something for him but because of the money involved in the tender they get less for him. Moving up from the 7th to the 5th was probably fair value of scheff and his overpriced tender.

#6 in the 5th round
It won’t be noticed by many but the placement is important.
There are only 4 compensatory picks at the end of the 3rd and 4th – ( 3 ) at the end of the 3rd and ( 1 ) at the end of the 4th. That means we’re getting a high 5th rounder ( #137), whereas the placement of our 7th rounder — @ 13th in the 7th / #220 — is pushed back because of the high number of compensatory picks at the end of the 5th and 6th rounds — ( 6 ) comp. picks at the end of the 5th and ( 6 ) comp.s and the end of the 6th.
There’s a lot of value in the range where we’re picking (#137). I had been a little ticked that we were going to miss out on all the prospects in that range.
The late rounds, the 6th and 7th, aren’t much more helpful than the UDFAs. Signing bonuses for late round picks are larger than that for UDFAs. It may sound trivial but teams don’t like to give away money to likely cuts, and there’s a significant difference between the signing bonuses — albeit not overly large. For instance, Brandstater was paid a $124,000 signing bonus for a QB taken in the 6th (#174).
Players don’t make much for attending camp. In fact, it’s startling how little they make. They make their money for playing in the regular season, so the signing bonus money is the biggest chunk of a what late round picks (who are eventually cut) make. It’s also therefore a regrettable waste to the teams.

Show us where.
It's better than cutting the guy and he get's to go to a team where he might wish the season is over in October!
So we gave up our 7th round pick and received a 5th. That’s a little value for Scheffler in this deep draft. That 5th may be our new Center…

Its another
broncos pick because of the failed CBA. Scheffler would have been gone for nothing if the CBA rules didn’t change. So far the changes in the CBA has benefitted Denver. I just wonder what RFA’s they might have picked up if the old rules were still in effect.

You mean our 3rd leading receiver?
He caught more balls for more yards than Stokely. He caught for more yards and more TD’s than Royal. Games where he didn’t play, we had atrocious play from TE’s catching the ball. If you have a QB with limited passing ability, a good Pass Catching TE can be your best friend.
If you can’t figure out how to get good value, then figure out how to make him happy.
Except
that McD’s offense doesn’t use TEs for receiving. They need to be blockers and as much as I loved Scheff, he was not a good blocker.

McD's Offense used him enough for receiving...
For him to be our 3rd leading receiver last year. that is the point. The offense didn’t feature him and he was second on the depth chart…but still pulled in 416 yards and a couple TD’s.
And for the record, Shannon Sharpe couldn’t block for crap, and I would give up our first 4 picks from last year to have 1 of him.
Shannon Sharpe
was in a different system that didn’t require him to block.

Yeah...I don't care
Shanny was the one who brought in Dan Graham. For every Shannon Sharpe, we have had a blocking TE to compliment him. If McD isn’t smart enough to use a Fast TE with good hands, then he isn’t a very good play caller.
I’m sorry, with a QB like Orton, a TE slant should be bread and butter for the offense.
You act like all of our TE production just went out the door
We can still run a TE slant can’t we? Scheff was as good as gone, if not this year then next year for sure. This way we get at least some value for him. What’s not to like about that?
"He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp-posts... for support rather than illumination."
- Andrew Lang (1844-1912)
We can, but who will do it?
Did you watch Graham drop those balls against KC? If you look at the stats from last year, Sheff had 31 catches for 416 yards and 2 TD’s. Graham had 28 catches (not too far off right?) for 289 yards and 0 TD’s.
Maybe McD will get someone with that 5th pick this year who will turn into a HOF player. More likely, he will chose someone who will not be on the team by next year.
My problem is that a disgruntled Tony Sheffler playing in a system that supposedly can’t use his talents for a coach that didn’t particularly like him, still was our 3rd leading receiver. I don’t think either Graham or Quinn is the type of player to take up that slack.
This week, we traded away our #1 and #3 receivers. We got decent compensation for Marshall, but I don’t believe that a 5th rounder is worth giving up that short term production from Sheff.
just my opinion.
This is more about getting rid of a lockerroom cancer
A player that quit on his team and didn;t want to be hear. A player who verbally expressed his desire for our season to be over while we were in a playoff race with games left to be played.
If we didn’t trade Scheff now he would have been cut. There’s no way he is a problem for us throughout all of 2010 and then he walks as a UFA. It’s best to get wahat we could get for him. In this market, that was a high 5th rnd pick.
Just my opinion.

You are right. The first site I found that on had him at 0.
I stand corrected.
Remember this
Every year teams lose players in Free agency, with no compensation. If it were any year but this year, with it being the final year of the cba, there would be no restricted free agents, and we wouldn’t have gotten anything for Scheffler or Marshall. They both would have walked, signed big contracts with other teams, end of story. Forget how much we lost. Neither one of those players were players we wanted on our team. In normal years, we have cut our losses, let the players move on, and gotten nothing. This year, the cards fell in our favor and we got a 5 and two 2nds. Not too shabby.

We did...The DB was trying to get the dropped ball
Don’t get me wrong, I love Dan Graham as a blocking TE. My point is that I am a huge fan of the pass catching TE. I am even a bigger fan of a pass catching TE in an offense with a QB that has a suspect arm. Graham ain’t one. Quinn ain’t one. Nobody that we pick up in the draft will be as good as Sheff for at least 2 years.
Even if he is gone after next season, I think he could have really helped us to avoid a rough offensive season in 2010.
Our new #1,2 receivers for next year caught 93 balls for a little over 1000 yards, combined. #3 is a runningback.
Graham
When drafted was considered a receiving TE. I will be glad to see Graham as the receiving TE and Quinn the blocking TE.
Derek Anderson is just as much a probowl quarterback as Jay Cutler
Good point
Just because he’s a good blocker doesn’t mean he’s not a good receiving TE.

True, though he was never able to break through as a receiver
Either here in Denver or in that other system…somewhere in New England I think.
I doubt you will see any change in his play this year.
Let's put some things in perspective
All that has been said about blocking, attitude, etc is true.
However, Scheffler & Graham’s production, other than in terms of total yardage were not all that different.
Scheffler caught 31 out of 50 passes (62%) for 416 yards, with 168 yards coming after the catch and scored 2 touchdowns.
Graham caught 28 out of 42 passes (67%) for 289 yards with 164 yards coming after the catch and scored 1 touchdown.
Scheffler generated 19 first downs, Graham 14.
In your response to your comment about “Games where he [Scheffler] didn’t play,” Scheffler only missed 1 game — the final one versus Kansas City. He was active for the other 15. In those 15 games, he had more yards and/or catches than Graham 7 times. In the other 8 games, Graham had more catches and/or yards than Scheffler.
I’m inclined to believe that we will see a far smaller drop off in TE receiving production than many people are predicting.

See ya Scheff!
I like this deal. I was hoping for a 4th rounder for him and the third pick in the 5th is pretty close to the 4th round. I don’t mind having to give up the 7th in order to make it happen either. We could have very well just flat out relased Scheff as he wasn’t happy here and doesn’t fit what we want in our TE’s in our scheme.

TE in late rounds?
I wonder if we go this route or just look at the UDFA’s this year for some depth? Who was the kid we took from Arkansas State?
I’m not sure on the schools, but are you talking about Marquez Branson?
Fix the line, Moreno will be fine.
His only knock that I know of is, he's only 6'2 but that should hamper him in our scheme if he can block and catch too.
Seems like blocking is more important in this system.
by bfree2bronc on Apr 19, 2010 10:31 AM MDT up reply actions
It certainly is. But even with that in mind, both the tight ends on this roster are capable of catching. Graham is more than adequate with catching, and I don’t think we would have picked up Quinn if we weren’t sure that he could catch too. He was used primarily as a blocker in college, that’s their scheme as well, but I’ve heard multiple reports of Quinn having pretty solid ability and athleticism when it comes to catching.
I also think he proved he is athletic when he batted down that fake-punt last year.
Fix the line, Moreno will be fine.
Marquez has the size
to play at the Possession WR spot.

I’m not worried about Quinn, Ayers or Moreno. One guy that I think will shock us with big time play is McBath. I see something in this kid that I can’t explain but have a feeling he he is going to over shadow some of the other rookies.

Richard Quinn caught 12 balls in College.
Total.
For about 130 yards.
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=170976
He was NOT brought here to catch the ball.
Let us keep that production in context.
At the University of North Carolina when he played they had very weak O-line and under whelming QB options. Yet, they had tremendous WRs, like Hakeem Nicks.
Thus the TEs such as Quinn were used to help the poor O-line give the QBs time to find Nicks and Co. Yes, he’s a better blocker than catcher, but it’s not his fault that skill was never developed in college.
Let’s not act like he can’t catch the ball, just because the eternally unhealthy, but good receiver Scheffler is gone.

McD’s evaluation of Quinn at last years combine. Wish I had a link. But, McD was impressed with Quinn’s pass catching ability.

That is all well and good
But the fact remains that the man has caught 12 footballs in a game situation since High School.
Lots of players look good at the combine.
I have no problem bringing him into the fold to be a blocking TE, lets just not pretend that he is some breakout receiver waiting to happen.
Let's also not pretend like it's a skill
that can’t be developed.
Who knows, if utilized in the passing game for the first time since High School he may just surprise. Not really his fault he hasn’t played for TE friendly offenses.
"You can make mistakes, but you are not a failure until you blame others for those mistakes." -John Wooden
Quinn was brought to Denver to block and receive
Please go back and read the info around his draft. Randall has this one right. Quinn struggled to pick up routes and formations last year, but given that his college didn’t really use a receiving TE, that’s not surprising. He, like most, has the offseason, OTAs and TC to learn the system. He caught the ball well at Combine and in TC. His receiving skills will take longer to develop, but he was also rated as the #2 blocking TE in last year’s draft.
Complaining about his college’s TE system is pointless. It doesn’t represent his skill or lack of it – the WRs were excellent, the QB limited and Quinn would have been gone by our next pick had we not traded 2 3rd round pick for the last pick in the 2nd and a 4th. The 4th got Seth Olsen, a piece that we obviously needed, given the guard/center play last year.
It all starts with the lines
Okay...what exactly is wrong with being a blocking TE?
Aside from trying to justify a 2nd round pick, what is wrong with letting the kid be good at what he is good at? I have looked back at his draft information and everything that I read points to 2 things.
- is that he is a natural blocker. Quick Feet (blocking), good speed and strength allow him to be superb blocker. Has a natural understanding of leverage and positioning.
- is that he lacks speed, quickness and route running ability in the passing game. Adequate hands, but without the ability to make separation from the defender.
Call me a pessimist, but I just don’t see a guy who was basically a Tackle in College turning into a pass catching TE. Has it ever happened? I don’t remember it. The NFL is a really hard place to develop a skill that you don’t already have.
As far as the Combine and Training Camp…I just don’t care. The common thing about his College experience and his NFL experience is that he doesn’t catch passes in game situations. There are lots of guys who can look good in passing drills, but there is a lot more to the game than can be seen in practice or at the county fair that is the NFL Combine.
I would love to be proven wrong, I just don’t believe it will happen.
Nothing is wrong with being a blocking TE
Except that they can be found bagging groceries as UFAs, their worth is about a 5th round pick- ham sandwhich. Now a good pass catching TE, thats different.
Calling Manumaleuna a blocking TE is an insult to him
He plays full back, H back, and TE. By playing so many position he can actually save a roster spot on the gameday roster
You would love to be proven wrong
yet you insist on taking his college production out of context and citing it as if that proves he can’t be a decent NFL pass-catching as well as blocking TE. He wasn’t going to catch many passes at North Carolina regardless of his potential as a receiver because of the situation there, which others have pointed out and which you have persistently ignored.

They traded Sims for a guy they can try out at TE for a reasonable sum. If he does well they’ll probably offer him an extension next year, and since he apparently wants to be in Detroit they’ll be in a good bargaining position vis a vis other teams. And he’s insurance in case Pettigrew doesn’t bounce back from his injury.

Nice deal...
Remember, this is the guy that said he wished the season was over after we got beat in a very close game against one of the best teams in football in week 16 when playoff hopes were still alive. If you’re trying to build a team, a guy like this gets shipped regardless. I would have liked to see McD cut him then, but MdD’s brash, but not that brash. Plus, as John points out, he didn’t fit the system, he was a backup, he was unhappy with the club and the club was unhappy with him. Not exactly great bargaining position. For those of you expecting a third rounder and throwing around the word “swindled” , pass the pipe.

It always amuses me when a team trades for a bust and refers to him as a "starter".
for example, when detroit traded for George Foster a couple of years back, they made note of the fact that he had started something like 30 games in the last two years – without noting that those last two were both healthy scratches and the only reason why he started as much as he did was that he was a #1 pick! you can’t NOT start someone you’re paying that much money to!

This deal is a stark reminder of two important truths when talking about the draft....
1) Fans over value players that are on the block and 2) The draft holds the possibility for mass dissapointment when talking about trades/players drafted.
Why should we?
When the DP says the team is reportedly asking for a 3rd round pick, why should we expect a 5th?

we dont need a top flier TE
because TEs dont get used much by McD.
This will give Quinn a chance to get on the field more, and we also have Branson on the practice squad.
Maybe we’ll add another TE in the last few rounds, but Im not counting on it right now.

so here we are. Wish him luck back in his home state. The Broncos are doing Scheff and Marshall favors in the sense of trading them back to their home lands, and in Scheffler’s case it might be a good fit. But he wasn’t a fit in Denver anymore, was a disappointment, and it’s a high 5th round pick which as others have pointed out is in a very deep draft.

This isn't THAT bad a trade...
San Antonio Holmes and Ted Ginn Jr. both went for only 5th rounders, the trade market is rough these days. Tony Scheffler was also very unhappy in Denver, he now returns to his hometown, and is "relieved". Obviously the Broncos wanted more in return, but because everyone knew Scheffler wanted out, his trade value probably dropped. The only thing I don’t like about the trade is we had to give up a pick.
Having a bunch of draft picks is kind nice.
Would rather have a 5th than a 7th though
and look at it this way. The Lions now have FOUR 7th round picks. Good luck trying to dump those off.

We already used it to get a deal done
We just used our 7th round pick to move up to a 5th. That 5th now has more value than the 7th if we need to package it together to move up again.
Owning the Patriots since September 9, 1960
UCFA probably costs more
Just off the top of my head, UCFAs can sign with anyone, I would think that some teams would have to fork out a little more to get one versus a guy we control the rights to (until the next draft anyways, but who holds out as a 7th round pick anyways?).
Owning the Patriots since September 9, 1960
It's possible that a UCFA costs more for the broncos, for other teams they're cheaper
The Broncos have a history of handing out $20k signing bonuses to UCFA’s, whereas a lot of teams will not hand out any signing bonus at all. Not sure how much bonus a 7th rounder gets, but I doubt it’s as much or more than $20k.
Personally, I think this is money well spent – you’ll notice that certain teams routinely target and grab 3-5 UCFA’s immediatly after the draft, and those same teams often end up seeing a contribution from those same players later in the season.
Belief is accepting something because you’ve been convinced to do so, whether you like it or not. Faith is accepting something because you want to accept it.

Seems like the Lions were antsy here.
Draft rd contract verses CFA contract, not to mention draft picks may have not smoked crack in the last 2 months, where UCFA’s probably smoke it just to get by…

"what's the difference between a UDFA and a 7th rounder?"
A — mostly signing bonus money. UDFAs get to pick their destination, which makes for a much better fit.
no goats, no glory.
where they go
They go where they can play and get paid. We recruited the top UDFA crop last year (based on PFW’s rankings), which may have been partly the result of our paying more to UDFAs in signing bonuses. Some teams pay virtually no signing bonuses to UDFAs. The other thing in our favor was the perception that there was an opportunity here.
http://www.milehighreport.com/2009/4/26/854399/2009-nfl-draft-open-thread-college
Putting relatively more money into attracting UDFAs makes a lot of sense. Teams don’t like wasting the signing bonuses of draftees who have virtually no shot at a roster spot but UDFAs are paid far smaller bonuses, and a slightly larger bonus can be the deciding factor in signing them. IMO — our willingness to part with late picks last year in order to sign ‘good fits’ (McKinley, Brandstater) reflects the superfluous nature of late picks.
Ideally, from both a player talent and financial point of view, we’d be better off if we ignored the late rounds (6 & 7) and emphasized the UDFAs. Moreover, there are very few late picks and many UDFAs. We’d often be well-served if we used the bonus money we waste on late rounders and used it instead to lure UDFAs.
A critical factor in these decisions is roster openings. The current bubble positions are: ( 1 ) – OT, ( 1 ) – OG, ( 1 ) – OC, ( 1 ) – WR, ( 1 ) – TE, ( 1 ) – RB, ( 1?) – NT, ( 1 ) – ILB, ( 1 ) – OLB, ( 1 ) – CB. Draftees need to either be at one of those positions or be an upgrade candidate. UDFA’s can provide competition at full positions, and they also provide developmental depth for important positions that can’t carry added players.
no goats, no glory.

Actually, I think DET is moving the right direction
Schwartz seems like a good coach, and with Millen gone, they have an opportunity to turn it around.
Megatron is a stud. They have some other talented youngsters at QB, TE, and RB that could be interesting. Their trenches are a mess, but Schwartz comes from Tennessee which has consistently good trench players, so I give him a better than average chance of turning that around, assuming DET has enough patience to let him develop some players.
Its a 3-5 year job to turn Detroit around, but given how bad they were, my guess is they’ll give Schwartz the time to implement his system before pulling the plug. Whether it works or not, I think is primarily dependent on their QB not being a total failure, but he looked as good as you’d expect a rookie project to look… at least he didn’t scream immediate bust to me, and showed the potential to be serviceable.
Getting rid of Millen is a right direction for any team.

Bad trade
First one this offseason really. Even if Scheffler was not going to fit in the system we should have been able to get a 5th round pick for his talent level.
Seriously, if LeKevin Smith is worth a 5th, then Scheffler sure is.
Other than that we won’t be drafting a TE unless there is really a stud TE sitting there a round or two after our FO thinks he should have been picked. For now I am more than happy to go in with what we have at TE and since we use them more for blocking than lots of pass plays we can just throw the backup tackle on the end of the line if we want a “3 TE” set. And truthfully that feels like a better option.

and then reevaluate what you think Scheffler would have netted. Sure, we all would have liked a 4th rounder instead of a 5th. But look at what former 1st rounder Ted Ginn, or proven wideout Santonio Holmes (who has baggage, no doubt), netted; also a 5th rounder. It’s not like Scheffler has done a whole lot in his career. He’s talented but talent doesn’t equate to actual trade value. And especially not ths year.
There's no need to fear, Underdog is here! / Broncos/Dodgers/Lakers fan in Niners/Raiders/Giants/Warriors country, and damned proud of it.
the difference between Scheffler and le Kevin Smith is, Smith fits the system, Scheff doesn't.
I got decent value for a guy who would have been cut anyway…Boldin, Marshall, Holmes and Ginn weren’t going to get cut, they were going to get traded… Big difference, if he would of fit our system i am pretty sure he would still be here. Just like Sims above, maybe he didn’t fit the system with the Lions. he was a first rd #9 pick and may do well in Philly. Not every player will look good in every system and that is just something we all must understand and live with.

Interesting path our 5th has gone
Didn’t we trade it for Hochstein and a 6th, then trade the second pick back for LK Smith? Hochstein is versatile, if not that talented, and LK will be interesting with his knee working. Now we have the 5th back for Scheffler, who wasn’t going to walk on the field anyway
Scheffler made a public fuss about the Cutler issue, claimed to come on board and then was identified by Dawk and the other captains as part of the problem with commitment among the players. I hope he gives his next team a better effort than he did the Broncos this year.

Wow, really a lot less than I expected
I was hoping for two fith rounders, seems more of McDaniels wanting to get scheff out more than him wanting value for him. Again, I am sad to se Sheff leave, but I understand why it had to be done.

Let's all think about who we could get in the 5th
Sheff is gone. He woulda been an UFA next year anyway, so we get nothing or we get to move up to the early 5th. So let’s think of what kind of guys we could get in the 5th. My vote: MLB – Micah Johnson
thats a great pick, I know the Eagles were looking at him
"I don't have to worry about the Washington Redskins, I have to worry about the Philadelphia Eagles."- Andy Reid
I think every team with a good offensive minded HC
Is looking at this guy, MCD, Andy Reid, Mike Mcarthy, Sean peyton, I dont think belichek because he’ll never want to take brady off the field, which why i also dont see tebow going there

Yeah I did, I was starting to feel bad for Warren- I kind of wanted to go with it
But Micah has a lot of upside. I can see him doing well on the next level, like how Foku steped up for us this year

System or Doghouse?
Plenty of comments about Tony S not fitting the system, well, anybody remember the wide open passes dropped by the guy that “fits the system” in the last game of the season. Pitifull. Seems just as likely that Tony just found his way into the doghouse and was not coming out. My question is, was he ever in Shanny’s doghouse? Not that I remember. It was easy to see how No. 6 could get on a coach’s nerves. But this really surprised me.
saying that you want the season to be over with
and that you didn’t want to play in the last game will get you in the doghouse right away.
He wasn’t just in McD’s doghouse. He was in Champ’s, Dawkins’, Orton’s, Graham’s and D.J. William’s doghouse too.

got it, but
I understand the story about benching him before the last game, but when did it start? Seems like it started with the Cutler trade and Tony being Cutler’s favorite target. I’m just wondering if anybody knows if the backstory goes back any further. Right now we have all got to be cheering for Quinn, and I don’t mean Brady. At the end of the year D. Graham couldn’t catch a cold.
My biggest problem with the trio of trades (Cutler, Marshall, Scheff)....
is that we only received one NFL player (Orton) and the rest just draft picks. I’m just not in love with draft picks like most on our board.

so I guess I should say we also got Quinn as another NFL player if I include Hillis.
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
For Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler and a seventh..
we got 2 firsts, 2 seconds, a third, a fifth and Kyle Orton. Its great value.
Not to me.....
draft picks just don’t turn out frequently enough to be considered great value. Only time will tell but even if some of the draft picks turn out, it sets us back a couple of years as they will likely not show their worth for a few years. Getting back proven NFL players can pay dividends much quicker…..but player-for-player trades are unfortunately rare in the NFL.
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
I see your point, but...
economics comes into play as well. Dont break the bank for me first guys when you are installing a team first concept. Those guys were not on board, so we got what we could. To me, its a lot. Like him or not, Orton had a better year than Cutler. The picks give us more shots at drafting well. You hit some, you miss some but the more bullets you have the better chance you have of hitting. This team has quite a few holes. At the end of the day, the big picture is what matters. Like you said, time will tell.

Saw it mentioned above
Someone was wondering who I thought our 5th round pick would be…My guestimate would be Armanti Edwards, the WR/RS from Appalachian State. I think the Broncos could line him up at QB, RB, WR, KR, or PR. Scheffler and a 7th for Armanti Edwards. Mark it down! :)

Don't know
But he was an electrifying playmaker. I don’t think there is any correlation between the two players. Edwards ran his forty in the low 4.4’s, and he is much smaller than Tebow. I think he will be drafted as a Josh Cribbs type

Mostly does their wildcat though, If we get Tebow I see him playing in that role… Althought the idea of edwards in motion taking handoffs from tebow is exciting but i dont think you can draft 2 guys who are going to play the same kind of versatile role, although edwards is more of a reciever…
Im rambling arent I?

"Peyton Hillis didn’t rip the sleeves off his jersey, they flew off out of fear."

Lining Tebow up in the shotgun on short yardage would be fun,
but other than that, I don’t see him as an immediate weopon on offense this year. If McD is convinced he’s the QB of the future, then he should bring him in.
Edwards is probably the smartest (he’s very bright acidemically, but I’m talking football smarts here), athletic, clutch, versitile player in this year’s draft. If he’s still on the board in the fifth round, he has to be the pick. He’s everything McD says he wants in a player. I actually wouldn’t be suprised if we go for him in the third or fourth and add some depth at offensive tackle with this new fifth round pick.
Won't bow. Don't know how.
Sigh....
I gotta admit, I come to MHR at times to be “talked off the ledge”…I have not always agreed with moves made by Coach McD, and I have been slow to warm to Orton….but somehow the fan base at MHR seems so upbeat and positive about the moves and decisions, and I come away thinking it will be alright…
This trade, essentially taking a talented if underutilized tight end and parlaying it into a jump from the 7th to the 5th round of the draft seems like a charitable contribution….can it really be spun otherwise? Sure, he was disgruntled, sure he was not the right fit, but you’d think we could do better…
I have been willing to ride along as the talent redistribution takes hold…Cutler, Marshall, Scheefler and others out, and yes we can argue how many good draft picks we have and how deep this draft is….but that places HUGE pressure on this moment…we can ill afford any draft busts….in fact we need to convert this talent outshipping to impact players or else McDaniels starts to look like he has over reached…..the next week will begin the most important chapter in the McD narrative…if he drafts well, we can exhale…and then if those picks actually make an impact, he can and should be congratulated for having such a clear vision and purpose….but come September, October, and November….if the new puzzle pieces fail to bring success, or at least a clear path toward success, I wonder how it will all be received…that seems like an awful lot is riding on this draft….has any one team EVER had a draft so successful? I am just not sure…my greatest fear remains, Josh McDaniels is destined to be a great NFL coach…I just wonder if it will be in Denver….
What if you don't know Jack....but Jack knows you?
There are also stopgaps out there
Specifically at wide receiver and tight end. The Broncos could always kick the ol’ tires on Terrell Owens…

Hugo, all of that offensive talent never finished higher than 16th in the NFL in scoring. Sixteenth! And that was for a coach whose playbook they fit. What exactly has been lost?
The Brian Griese-era Broncos consistently scored far more than the Cutler-Marshall-Scheffler teams. But people couldnt’ get Griese out of town fast enough, and nobody pines away for that offense. But the pass-wacky 2007-2008 teams, even though they were bad at scoring…. those are the teams nobody can get over. I get it: Those teams were riveting. But they weren’t good, they were just potentially good.

The difference was the O-line.
Guys like Olandis Gary and Mike Anderson weren’t nessicarily better runners than Knowson. late-career Rod Smith and Ed McCaffery / Ashley Lelie weren’t better than Marshall and Royal and greise was not a better QB than Orton the difference is that the O-line was better 10 years ago. I don’t know if it was better talent, a better sceme, or possibly that back then zone blocking was more effective becuase the league hadn’t caught up to it, but back then the offense was able to control the pace of the game and control the clock. that’s not something that you can say for the last 4 seasons.

I actually am not pining for anything other than progress…like him or not, Cutler was the QB of the moment, as was Plummer before him, Griese before him…I am a Broncos fan….I saw flaws in all of these guys, but you used that phrase…“potentially good” which applied to the team fielded in Shanahan’s last year….I was ready to see Shanny go, and wasn’t entirely sold on Cutler, but describing a team as potentially good was simimlar to a team I watched in San Francisco led by a mid round QB from Notre Dame that went like 2-12….the rap was that team had potential…which made it exciting, and it paid off because that team went on to actually win several Super Bowls…I am sorry, I am NOT an Orton hater, but I am not sure the team this team is about to rise ot the top UNLESS McDaniels pulls off an epic draft, fills some gaping holes, and whips the whole thing into a cohesive unit in 12 -18 months time….right now, their potential lies in the fact that with a good draft they good be better…but I think if anything, they played up to or perhaps over their potential last year….

"value"
It hard to get “value” for a player whom you don’t value (and other teams know this). Scheffler did not fit our scheme, cannot block and was suspended for attitude problems. We would have had to cut him because did not want to play for the Broncos. McD did a good job to get a high fifth for him.

Wow
Judging by the comments MCX has never made a bad trade yet. Regardless of if Sheffler fit Denvers system or not he fit SOMEONE’s system and therefore had more value then a th round draft pick. This WAS a bad trade.
FOr all the people ripping on the Lions their new regime just fleeced another team into getting a ready to play player. They also got 3 draft picks for a useless Roy Williams and had by far the best draft of last year (which admittedly should happen when you have the first pick in this trade).

I'd agree with that - with one exception
I didn’t like LeKevin Smith for a 5th rounder last year (and IIRC he’s been cut so it looks like I’m right). but I like all of McD’s trades other than that.
and as for calling Sheffler a ready to play player…. well, you’ve got to admit he’s had some injuries. what good is being ready to play now if he doesn’t make it through the season? look, I’m not trying to insult Scheffer, I think he’s a great receiver, with a ton of potential. I wanted him to realize that potential here as much as anyone else. But he’s injury plagued, plain and simple.

7th round vs 5th round
Here is the last couple years of 5th round and 7th round picks for the broncos.
2009: 5th-Kenny Mckinley, 7th- Blacke Schlueter
2008: 5th- Carlton Powell, Ryan Torain, 7th- Peyton Hillis, Josh Barrett
2007: None
2006: 5th- Chris Kuper
2005: 7th – Paul Ernster
2004: 5th- Jeff Shoate, 7th Matt Mauck, Brandon Miree, Badlee Van Pelt
So it doesn’t look like we will get much of anything other than Hillis in the 7th round the last couple of years. Other than Kuper though we have not done to well in the 5th either. I am not sure why people are having such a fit over losing the 7th rounder in this trade.
What about the Patsies' 5th and 7th rounders?
I know it’s a stretch, but if McD follows the Pats way….

You damn well better have a good draft…I mean c’mon. And I dsagree with you that we got fleeced. But they did get utility, where we got potential. And the Roy Williams deal is mostly why Marshall went for a 2nd, not a 1st. Jerry Jones’s desire to change his team w/o TO has ultimately reset the value scale for trading WR’s in the NFL. Yeah, I know we all read about the JETS and the their 1st pick…but it didnt happen?

What nagging injury didn’t Scheffler have? Surprises he wasn’t a giant scap.
BTW, Brandon started Day 1 in Detroit until he tore his ACL. That’s more of a sample size than we’ve gotten from Tony Scheffler in 4 years. Scheffler didn’t beat out Dan Graham under two different coaches. So at least Brandon has started.

Again,
they have a 1st round pick who is a better blocker and younger player in Brandon Pettigrew.
The thought that Scheffler is gonna start is a little bit misguided. He’s gonna have to beat out Casey Fitzsimmons for the BACK-UP spot.
Brandon Pettigrew is the Detriot Lions starting TE.

Brandon Pettigrew is hurt. Even if he does start when healthy Detroit runs lots of two tight end sets. Detroit gets a player who should contribute. Denver gets a player who probably sits on the practice squad for two years.
offensive coordinator Scott Linehan loves using two tight ends; in Minnesota he made it work well with Jermaine Wiggins and Jim Kleinsasser. So I think this move was independent of Pettigrew’s long-term status

However
getting a pratice squad player is better than letting scheffler walk after we cut him after the draft… Jonnie Knox was 5th round pick last year The Broncos could get some value out of this pick
keep in mind, Scheffler's value is different to different teams.
In Denver, Scheffler didn’t get much action and wasn’t going to get much next year either. He wasn’t happy, and the coach wasn’t happy with him. in Detroit, He’ll get more action, and will likely be happier (healthier is a different question). This deal is a win-win.

The thing about Scheff...
…is that he had a pretty reasonable number of targets, he was heavily featured a fair share of game plans, he posted his most career starts, and he was heavily used in the redzone (though without much success). Yet the guy still wasn’t happy. The reason for his discontent will forever be open to speculation (personality conflict, didn’t like to block, resented Cutlergate, etc), but I don’t know why some people figure Denver should have held him hostage. He’s never been the type of player you keep captive at all costs.
Take away the hype (or stop pretending that tools automatically translate to potential), and we basically just got a 5th rounder for Jeb Putzier with attitude issues. That’s a good thing in most circles.

How to dismantle a team....
I don’t know what Kool-Aid most of the peeps on this site have been drinking, but McHoodie has done NOTHING positive since he’s become coach of the Broncos. We were the #2 offense in the league two years ago with a franchise talent at QB and one of the best #1 receivers in the league just starting to come into their own and we ship ‘em out, good call. Young franchise QB’s and #1 receivers are a dime a dozen, right!?! Then we sign Mike Nolan who only improves our D and team as a whole and he bails because he can’t get along with McDouche. Isn’t it your job as a head coach to coach different players and personalities and make it work!?! It seems like McD is a “dick-tater” who goes by the ‘ol “my way or the highway approach” and it’s destroying a once promising team. While we’re at it why don’t we get rid of Dumervil as well, I’m sure we could get at least a 4th-or 5th rounder!?! As for draft picks; yeah, we have a bevy of picks, but McD hasn’t shown he can draft a lick, and even if we do get some quality players, they still won’t have the impact Marshall, Cutler, or even Scheff had for at least a couple seasons. It just seems like we were a few players away from being a really strong team and we just imploded the entire thing. I wonder what vets like Champ and Orton think about these moves, I would be PISSED, but I’m sure you know that already. For anyone who disagrees with me, please, indulge me and give me a reason for optimism because it looks like we’re right back in “re-building” mode and we’re a long way from sniffing the playoffs anytime soon.

Not to mention
…that this guy is brand new and has only written 1 post ever.
Oops, I mentioned it.
Obvious troll.
Trying to watch Devs games at 4pm is a PitA.
Consider this...
Mcdaniels has a very specific blueprint in his mind for what he believes it will take to build a winning franchise year in and year out. Many of the components he inherited did not fit his blueprint ie a QB who can’t read coverage, a TE who can’t block and unfortunately a me-first WR.
You can certainly question the blueprint and are entitled to denounce, mispronounce and specualte negatively at will. That’s the really cool part about this site. As long as you can make valid points that are supported with somne form of logic you can usually get a robust conversation in play. The Mc name calling is generally frowned upon though as it is usually an indicator of an extreme bias and the inability to consider other peoples perspectives.
For the most part the consensus here seems to be that Mcdaniels is not an idiot, does have a very specific plan in mind to build a team and are willing to give him 3 years to to see if it’s a good plan. Considering his football background i’d be reluctant to make definitive statements as they may be hard to take back later. For every single point you make in your post there is a valid and substantiated counterpoint. Take Scheffler for example, some believe that he was an awesome TE worth at least a 3rd round pick, The problem is 31 other teams disagree.

I have lost track
of how many times I have read this ignorant nonsense about us being the #2 offense in the league in 2008. Do you really consider yards more important than points? In terms of the latter we were 16th, not 2nd, and from the 4th week onward we were actually in the bottom 10, 27th I think. GET OVER IT. It was an exciting offense, but it was piss poor when it came to converting yards into points. Can you say “poor in clutch situations”? I can. And McDaniels’ supposed track record of not being able to draft well spans how many drafts and how much preparation time? That’s right, one draft and about four months. Naturally, you forgot to mention his savvy free-agent pickups because that somehow doesn’t fit your point. As for your insulting reference to McD’s name you can shove it. I’m tired of malcontents who can’t refer to McDaniels without turning his name into a verbal sneer. You want reason for optimism? How about considerable upgrades and a consequent increase in depth at all three defensive line positions, which addresses our biggest need?

Not that you weren't entirely thorough
But – the biggest picture of it all, that it’s hilarious to see so many people blaitanltly miss;
Is McDaniels did exactly as good/bad as the coach that he replaced. For any first year coach (let alone following Shannahan, being known as a QB coach coming into Elway’s town), that is hard to view as such a drastically horrible beginning of a career.
Can we say super – high – expectations?

I can’t add much to Spock’s reaction, but in response to your implied question, i think Champ, Orton, not to mention Dawkins and the other veteran leaders were pulling for Marshall and Scheff to be traded. After all, it was in part their expression of concern to the coach that got them benched in week 16 anyway. They were, by many accounts, not team players. So I think the team leaders, the hard workers, and the guys with the ethics to WIN as a team have answered your question before it was asked.

For everyone who trashed my post due to me being a rook poster or whatever your reasoning, I pose these questions to you: How has getting rid of Cutler, B Marsh and Scheff improved our team? What assistants from the Belechick coaching tree have had success as head coaches in the NFL? If the answers are in the draft, whom should we pick? I’m not getting on McD because I’m some delusional Shanny fanatic, it just seems replacing Pro Bowlers with middle of the road journeymen isn’t a recipe for success.
Pro Bowlers? Thats a popularity contest....
How did getting rid of them harm our team? it did not. Even with Marshall 300 catches we NEVER won the play offs, yet we won 2 Super Bowls with 2 undrafted free agents in McCaffery and Smith who were TRUE team players.
SCheffler? Drops more balls than what he is worth and could not block my 80 year old mother.
Cutler? The same QB that led the Bears to 7-9 with 26 interceptions. Oh, and to think that Orton led the same team, with LESS weapons to 9-7 and was 5 seconds from going to the play offs the year before.
So, welcome to the board, but you need to bring some facts to the table Champ…..because what you have brought is MSM nonsense that will anyone on this board will shred.
Orton out performed Cutler.
Marshall is a possession WR with no deep threat ability (though a very good possession reciever).
Scheffler is not even one of the Top 10 TE in the game.
So I am struggling to see your reasoning.

They were ALL scratching their heads and they know a thing or two about football. I love the Broncos and will always support the team but I also won’t follow blindly and bite my tongue. Go Broncos!!!

you may not be following blindly...
but you appear to be criticizing blindly. When you look at the relevant stats, you’ll see that there is thought, reason, and a plan behind what McDaniels is doing. Feel free to be critical of McD, by all means. But to yell and scream and call names while not providing analysis to support your argument is not productive.
Do I think McD has handled everything perfectly? No. Do I think he has a plan? Yes. Will that plan work? Maybe. The point is, one 8-8 season is not enough to judge McDaniels on. I honestly expected the team to be 6-10 or worse last year given that McD was in his rookie year and the lack of talent across the board, so from that perspective, I have hope. Please don’t take this as an attack but rather constructive criticism. MHR is always welcoming new members, but a certain amount of decorum is expected. Thanks!

You are entitled to your opinion. So are the kool-aid drinkers. Always fun to mix it up. Just so you know, there are plenty of others on this board that are not completely sold on McD. Many, like myself, have big doubts, but we are huge fans and as always, hope for the best. So we have downgraded at QB, WR and TE. Truth is, the old crowd wasn’t exactly winning the Super Bowl. No Mcisms and some fair questions. No one can speak to the replacement value of BM and Tony since we haven’t realized the picks yet. As for JC that’s a lighning rod topic here, time will tell us more but if last year is an indicator we substantially upgraded the team by trading him. C’mon 2 firsts and a QB that outperformed him statistically and in the W column, not to mention a team first attitude. That’s easy. As for what other Bchick assistants have done? I think it’s an irrelevant question, if nothing else, like him or hate him, Josh has proven that he’s his own man. As for your other assertions see Spock and Boydy’s comments they make excellent points that you really should consider instead of just buying into the MSM party line.

It SEEEMS like replacing Pro-Bowlers with middle-of-the-road Journeymen
isn’t a recipe for success, but things are not always what they seem. Regarding the coaching tree argument, Weis, Crennel, etc. were never fully in charge of the offense. McD was in charge of the greatest offense in NFL history. But that is still not sufficient proof that he will excel. BB gave McD a ringing endorsement, including that he thought McD was fully ready for the head coaching job. Again, alone, this fact is not proof McD will be a successful HC.
The bottom line is, no one knows. This will be a telling season. I’m not going to jump on the “hate McDaniels” bandwagon because I disagree with some of his moves. He knows a hell of a lot more about football, and has access to far more information than any of us, and we try to question him. By listening to the talking heads on NFLN, you are getting snippets of ill-informed opinions from people who keep 1/32 of an ear on each team. The wires are always getting crossed, and no one by the guys at Dove Valley has all the information to make an informed judgment on the virtue of the Broncos player decisions. Don’t forget: ESPN and NFLN are media outlets, which means they are funded by advertising dollars, which means the MORE SENSATIONAL the story, the more money they get. Truth is secondary to juice. This site is run by people who desire, above all, a true accounting of the goings-on of the Denver Broncos. I find it FAR more illuminating. There is no agenda here, regardless of what people might think about the “bashers” or the “Kool-Aiders.” We are all looking for the best information about our beloved team.
As for me, McDaniels is the head coach of the Broncos, and I will stand behind his decisions until he’s no longer the coach. I may not understand his decisions, or agree with them, but what do I know? What does any of us know? Let’s buckle up, enjoy the draft, see what these new players bring to 2010, and GO BRONCOS!

I didn't trash you for being a rook poster
I reacted to the poor logic and the boorish McDouche reference, which I’m truly tired of. The only relevance of your being a rookie poster is that if you had spent more time reading posts before jumping in you might have discovered that gratuitous name-calling is not appreciated here. As for Cutler being a pro bowler, consider that he beat out Rivers who had a QB rating of 105.5, the best in the league that year (2008), while Cutler’s 86.0 was 16th best. Cutler being picked was due to his yardage total, the result of us throwing on almost every down, and the glamour of his rocket arm and swashbuckling image. Marshall is a legitimate all pro even when you consider that he was targeted so much, because as his defenders have pointed out his being thrown to that much meant our opponents knew where the ball was going. But losing him wasn’t an unmitigated disaster because he’s a possession receiver not a field stretcher. At any rate it was a matter of drastically overpaying him (not the way to build a team, even if you don’t consider character issues) or letting him go, and the Broncos got better value for him than anyone could have reasonably expected. Scheffler I’ve always wanted to like but as somebody else pointed out he’s lazy, which might explain why he spent so much time in McDaniels’ and Shanahan’s doghouse and failed to develop enough blocking skills to show that he was at least trying.
Yet the post-Cutler Broncos were arguably better if you go by points differential, and the won-lost would have reflected it if Cutler hadn’t been handed a gratuitous win by a referee’s acknowledged error. And consider this. In 2008 the Broncos had a very good offensive line. In 2009 two of those players hit the age wall and a third went down with an injury. So three-fifths of our offensive line went kablooey, we traded away a “pro bowl” quaterback, and the 2009 Broncos were still at least as good and arguably a little better than their immediate predecessors. I don’t know about you but that fact coupled with McDaniels’ savvy free-agent signings gives me reason for optimism rather than despair.
