2010 NFL Draft - Demaryius Thomas

Clemson_v_georgia_tech_gyszraog1zjl_medium

Bay-Bay Thomas is coming to Denver!

After three trades - two moves down and a move up - the Denver Broncos finally made a selection in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft: Demaryius Thomas, WR, Georgia Tech.  Bay-Bay, as he's called, will immediately remind Broncos fans of the recently departed Brandon Marshall on the field.  At 6'3" and 224 pounds, he's a big target, but he's not just a possession receiver.  Despite playing in the triple option at Georgia Tech, Thomas still proved to be a legitimate deep threat.  As I type this, the Broncos have traded up to the 25th and are about to make a selection...

I don't know brother

The WR pick is alright…but Tebow seems sort of like a reach. If time proves me wrong than more powere to Tim.

by JakeCaan on Apr 22, 2010 8:20 PM MDT up reply actions

yeah

if we wanted him, we need to trade up to get him. Ravens probably called Buffalo and we were willing to pay a higher price.

From the official NFL website

Wilson: Broncos ‘panicked’ with Tebow pick; Bills weren’t interested

NFL.com Wire Reports

Buffalo Bills owner Ralph Wilson denied that his team tried to trade back into the first round of the NFL draft to take Tim Tebow, and he even said the Denver Broncos “panicked” when they made their move for the Florida quarterback.

“He’s a good player, but we had no interest in taking Tebow,” Wilson said Friday, according to The Democrat and Chronicle in Rochester, N.Y. “We were not moving up to take Tebow.”

I will say that

Tebow’s personality seems like a good fit for Denver’s religous community…I imagine he’ll be a good role model there.

by JakeCaan on Apr 22, 2010 8:22 PM MDT up reply actions

Denver really isn’t really that religious, at least compared to co springs. Don’t dog religion just because it’s popular

Tebow is great because he is a WINNER and a great guy.

Nevermind; I completely apologize, I misread your post

ME TOO

This is now McDaniels team and I like where we are going. Know we need to add a couple of OL’s and a defender and I am thrilled.

I would hope you would support who we are. Not, who we are not. Coach Norman Dale "Hoosiers"

Josh McDaniels is my hero

A little scary how much he gave up for Tebow, but he should be worth it in our offense in 2 years.

McD did a great job in this draft and we will see it all unfold in a year or two...

You have to be old enough to see this is a great move, high character prospects with both picks make the Broncos winners in the first rd.

by bfree2bronc on Apr 22, 2010 8:39 PM MDT up reply actions

DT was a great pick

Tebow was picked too early and at too high a price.

Sporting News summary

Hands: Lacks elite hands, which could cause him to struggle a bit. Adjusts well to make tough catches on both low and high passes. Tends to trap passes against his body or double-catch easy passes, which leads to drops. Uses body well to shield defenders and make tough catches. Gets up high to win jump-ball battles over cornerbacks, which makes him a real red-zone threat. Caught 87 percent of the passes he had a realistic chance of catching in the games we evaluated. Grade: 7.0

Patterns: Flashes ability to run sharp and precise routes downfield, but many of his routes in Georgia Tech’s triple-option offense were near the line of scrimmage. Shows the athleticism to get in and out of cuts quickly on “out” routes; shows a burst toward the sideline to separate. Shows deceptive speed on deep routes; long stride makes him look like he is not going fast. Separates from defender and often has to slow down to wait for underthrown passes. Grade: 7.0

Run after catch: Is a big-play threat on every touch. Shows excellent quickness turning downfield after the catch; accelerates to full speed in a flash and has the speed to take plays the distance. Can outrun defenders who have angles on him. Uses stiff-arm well on first defender, and runs through would-be tacklers to make big play. Grade: 9.0

Release: Does not explode off the snap, but accelerates and quickly closes cushion on defender. Lacks experience beating jams, but has good stiff-arm that makes us confident he can handle physical NFL cornerbacks. Grade: 5.5

Blocking: Is an excellent blocker who uses his size, strength and competitiveness to eliminate man. Gets after defender quickly. If ballcarrier gets by him, shows real competitiveness hustling downfield to block additional defenders. Is highly competitive coming down the line to make crack-back blocks on linebackers to set the corner for the running back. Will become one of NFL’s best blocking receivers. Grade: 9.0

Bottom line: Thomas, a junior, is a big receiver with outstanding athleticism who shows the ability to make big plays — it is amazing that a receiver playing in an option offense has been able to average over 24 yards per catch. However, he must improve his fundamentals — especially route-running, catching and recognizing coverages — after playing in a rudimentary passing attack in college. His broken foot is almost healed, and he eventually will become an elite NFL receiver. He reminds us Calvin Johnson with worse hands but better explosiveness and speed.

If Tebow ends up like another Aaron Rodgers

or in some respects Kevin Kolb than more power to Tim, McD, and the Bronco organization. Hey I guess every fan believes they’ll be undefeated and round up Pro Bowlers in the draft before the season starts.

You guys got a good one in Demaryius Thomas.

I really wanted to see him in Red and Gold next year.

I've been rapping for about seveteen years okay? I don't write my stuff anymore I just kick it from my head you know what I'm sayin? I can do that. No disrespect but that's how I am.

Question for all you wise folks

I recall MCD saying he wanted “impact players” in the first few rounds for this year. How do you see Tebow being one of those impact players for this year?

by SpiritGuy on Apr 22, 2010 8:46 PM MDT reply actions

Doesn't necessarily mean this year

In time, he can make an impact for sure. As a QB, it’s understood that he won’t light things up immediately.

Good or bust...let the chips fall where they may with Tebow

But color me really surprised that Clausen (and in some respects McCoy) are looking like 2nd rounders. I thought both guys graded better than Tebow during the combine…I guess maybe not though.

McD's draft maneuvering is genius.

His picks have yet to play out, but the man KNOWS how to run a draft! Oh, and Xanders, too.

he's going off saying about the Broncos

saying “THEY HAVEN’T WON ANYTHING!!! THEY HAVEN’T WON ANYTHING!!” ummm we won 8 games Jamie. That’s not bad for a transitioning system. Grow up. Funny because he had Tebow in the first but hates it because we took him. Makes no sense. He thought Tebow needed time to develop, and that’s what he’s going to get here and he’s still acting like a moron. wtf?

Tell you what

First thing I look for in a WR I trade up to get in the 1st round is a lack of elite hands. This has worried me about this guy for several years.

by OrangeandBlue27 on Apr 22, 2010 10:01 PM MDT via mobile reply actions

BM's hands

Were far from elite. 2nd in the league in drops in 08. Thomas will be fine.

Yes!

I’ve been rooting for this guy to get picked. I would not have picked him as our first overall selection, but having him on the team is much better than passing on him.

As a a true #1 WR, he’ll allow McD to open the playbook some more now.
