Instant Reaction - Grade the Denver Broncos 2010 Draft Picks

Wow!  The First Round is done and the Broncos, like last year, were the big newsmakers.  After 4 trades, the Broncos ended up with two players.

WR Demaryious Thomas from Georgia Tech and QB Tim Tebow from Florida.

We'll have much more on the picks tomorrow as we prepare for Round 2 and Round 3, but for now, give us your grade!

I didn’t like Tebow at 11, but we didn’t pick him at 11.

Is it round 2 yet?

If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Tebow's overvalued in the first round

but considering the way they maneuvered from 11 to 23 while getting two players they wanted, I gave Denver a B.

by BoylenOver on Apr 22, 2010 10:06 PM MDT reply actions

Not Great

Let see we drafted Demaryius Thomas = who could be very solid WR but still downgrade from Brandon Marshall.

Then we draft Tim Tebow that many NFL Scouts say won’t make it in the NFL.

God I miss Mike Shannahan.

Many scouts?

Who, Todd McShay? Tebow has a vote of confidence from multiple Hall of Fame NFL head coaches.

I like Gruden.

Gruden's unemployed as a head coach in the NFL.

Great picks by the Broncos

They took my guy in the first round, so obviously I’m very pleased. Demaryius Thomas is going to be a great receiver in this league. I had no idea we were looking at him, so that just goes to show you. Wouldn’t mind pairing him up with Arrelious Benn tomorrow.

Eciting to say the least!

We all knew there would be surprises and the Broncos FO certainly didn’t disappoint in that category. Pouncey wasn’t the target everyone was so ecited about and I tried to tell you that we may have our OLine the house and we don’t even realize it. I still look for JD Walton or Matt Tennant to climb on board though and maybe Ducasse. I would love to see Gerhart come to run over Eric Berry and his bad little self… Other than that, I am stoked!!!

Still think Tebow’s overvalued like I said, but I’m ready for them to prove me wrong.

The trades made and the WR taken keep this from dropping into negativity. Draft grades are a crapshoot anyway…I’m probably going to be dead wrong. Also, the grade is nowhere near finished…there’s still more to come and hopefully this grade will get up there for me. I did like the moves to get picks in a draft as deep as this.

Best college player this draft

The big debate is how it translates to the pros. 80 some tds against 16 picks? 70% completions. Ran for 56 tds. The guys is an athlete, and McD and McCoy can do some serious coaching. I’m going to hold back on the can’t play in this league stuff until its proven he can’t play in this league. Mel can suck it!

I think we will see Tebow all over the field playing different positions. I don’t see Tebow taking over the qb postion, but rather a compliment to Orton/Quinn. Tebow is another part or piece that helps the overall team! As long as he can follow McD’s orders, we will see a great team player (in multiple positions).

D

I had to go with a D, passable but barely.

The pick we got from San Fran to move from 11 to 13 was the same we gave to move from 24 to 22, which value wise seems like a super bad trade since the jump from 11 to 13 is greater in terms of talent you lose out on than the jump from 22 to 24.

The trade with Philly was decent, a pair of 3rd rounders was fine for the drop in draft position, but the Tebow trade was horrible, giving up 3 picks (better value than we got for Marshall) to get Tebow.

As for the players, we knew we needed a WR but in hindsight I question the decisionmaking in getting rid of a proven top WR and then replacing him with a 1st round WR who has some pretty serious questions about his readiness and ability.

The Tebow pick is awful to me, he will contribute nothing to this team in the short run and has some pretty severe fundamental problems with his mechanics which will put him quite far behind the 8-ball in terms of picking up the offense, adding to that is that he will be taking snaps behind 2 or 3 other QBs meaning he will get almost no quality practice time at all during camp and regular practice and it looks like a bad pick to me. Mcdaniels has now definitely put himself at the center of attention and his continued employment as a Broncos coach will rest in large part on the success of these two first round picks.

Over all I am worried that Mcdaniels falls in love with players like he did with Al Smith last year and overdrafts or makes poor trades, that is a dangerous route to go unless you are a superb evaluator of talent and I am not sure that Mcdaniels is.

I said D also

…for pretty much the same reasons.

That said, McD knows more about QBs, and has seen more of Tebow’s new mechanics recently than I have. I’m hoping/guessing he knows something I don’t.

I also didn’t particularly like McD’s draft last year, but it grew on me once I saw the players in action and the systems logic behind it. I’m hoping the same will happen this year. I do like the value moves of trading back, though the 2 moves up always seem to cost more than I like to spend… but McD likes HIS players… we’ll hope he’s as smart as he thinks he is.

Go Broncos, and I hope it works!

simplify

You can look at it as just going from 11 to 22 for two third rounders. Depending on the trade value chart you look at, that’s either even or we made a point-value profit.

Then factor in our big board. Since we made the choice to draft downards, that means the later round draft picks were worth more to us.

Finally, the trade value for our mid-round picks for the 2nd 1st was also about even, again depending on what chart you use.

So really the only question to ask is, is Thomas worth a #22 pick? And is Tebow worth a #25 pick?

Ticked about Thomas

Not that it was Thomas as our first pick, but that it was WR that reminded the Coach of Marshall. Why didnt he keep Marshall and use his number one for another need? This is more about McD and his problems with Marshall than he wants to admit. Im still trying to understand this coach. Its obvious that if you screw with him you will be out the door no questions asked. Denver will take a loss if you cross the coach.

BMarsh is a talented possession receiver

D. Thomas is a true #1 receiver in the mold of Calvin Johnson – he has pretty good hands (saw a source where he caight 87% of the catchable passes thrown his way,) he can make the catch when double-teamed, fights off defenders after tha catch, and is capable of running away from the pursuit.

Thomas should be a good receiver for us in the long run, despite not being able to make the same impact in week 1 as BMarsh could. In time, we’ll be glad we got rid of #15.

I also like the fact that he opens up the playbook some more as he adds greater variety to our WR corps.

B

Like the picks, but I wish we had O-line help. We missed both Iupati and Pouncey. And I think we feared Arizona would pick Tebow and jumped ahead of them. Don’t know about that, but nobody picked Clausen after us, so there was a good chance Tebow would’ve stayed on the board, too. In that case, we overpaid for him.

by no-pseudo-fan on Apr 22, 2010 10:18 PM MDT up reply actions

There’s a reason Clausen didn’t go in the 1st round. Teams obviously weren’t that high on him. Arizona not taking Clausen doesn’t really say anything about the Cards interest in Tebow.

I say a solid B

I think Thomas is perfect for what we want to do. We needed a downfield threat, which Marshall never was. He is a team guy all the way. We moved up 17 picks for a 3rd and a 4th,

I am fine with Tebow. Everyone wants to say we gave 3 picks for him. That is not true.

Tebow has to be the guy of the future, doesn’t matter if it is next year or the year after. Next year he is going to be a package player, wild cat, short yardage and goalline.

Take a talented qb and develope him, what a concept.

Personally, I didn’t like the pick. But, I like the move. Most 1st round picks are thrown to the wolves before they are ready. It could be a reason for the low success rate of 1st round QBs. Most good teams won’t take a talented qb to develope, rather they get second tier guys and try to develope those. Sometimes it works and sometimesa it don’t. I like this move to get a talented player that doesn’t have to be thrown to the wolves.

Raiders

are a high risk high reward team. McClain could make an already good defense even better, as long as he is healthy.

They probably should’ve taken a QB.

Tebow in first round a bit early for my taste...so a C.

Everybody kept talking about what a deep draft this is and there are guys that will go in the 2nd round that would have been 1st rounders last year. So I was actually excited how McD moved back twice and stock piled middle round picks in this very deep draft. And then to give 3 of them away to move up and take Tebow was a bit of a let down after I was cheering McD on for the earlier stock piling. McD has now hand picked 4 QBs in two years, he better have his guy now. However, if it takes 2-3 years for this 1st round QB to see the field, I hope we win in the next two years or McD may not be around to see the fruits of his labor. I do think we will have decent seasons and McD will be around, but it is a bit of a risk for him.

I voted B

only because Tebow is likely a work in progress. I think he is going to be a great player in this league. He has a work ethic you just can’t teach and the situation for him will allow him to progress at a manageable rate which allows him to have a chance to succeed. I really hope we don’t ignore the C and ILB positions. I like Butler, but think I have zero idea of what we will do…

Although I’m not going negative on Teebow.

I was extremely excited when I saw us sitting on SF’s pick, thinking we were going to get Pouncey. Then when we traded back, thinking we were cleverly loading up on 3rd rounders and Dan Williams still on the board. I thought, “We are going to come away in this draft with a big haul.”

I thought we’ve got 6 picks in the top 84!!!! In such a deep draft, I was salivating.

WAAAAAYYYY too early to judge

Right now, I think it was a great first round. Solid solid WR pick, and then Tebow. As of right now, I am pumped about the Tebow pick, and I am still pretty skeptical about his prospects as an NFL QB. The fact is that he was by far the riskiest QB pick in the draft, but has by far the highest ceiling. The guy was probably in the top 5 greatest college players in history. He has the intangibles to be a HOF quarterback. And I’m not talking about him being a good guy. In terms of knowing how to win (something Jay Cutler severely lacked), overall leadership, and passion the guy is a stud and possibly Hall of Fame-like. And honestly, I think that the media grew tired of Tebow and hearing how amazing he was, and started to nitpick on stuff like his mechanics. Sam Bradford, from what I have seen, has a worse release point than Tebow. If the so-called experts weren’t so negative on Tebow, everyone would be ecstatic. I mean the guy won two national championships and set all kinds of offensive records. Will he be a good NFL QB? I don’t know. There is a chance that he will be a bust. And if he is, we have Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn. But there is also a chance that he will be a probowler and lead us to Super Bowls. The signs are there for both. We’ll see, but I think that it was incredibly risky, but a very good risk to take. That’s my 2 cents.

Up until the Tebow trade I would of graded it an A, but we have bigger needs that we could of addressed with that trade (Williams or Odrick) that could of had an immediate impact. I think we again fell in love with a player that likely would of been available in the 2nd round and we could of not spent so a high cost for a luxury of trying to develop a 1st round QB.

The thing I like most about Tebow is how hard he works.

Players with an astounding amount of talent but little sense to work on it always find a way to flame out.

But a player with average talent but an astounding work-ethic will always find a way to contribute to his team.

Disregarding all his talent and other intangibles, Tim Tebow is already a winner.

Just so underdog is on the official record ;-)

I love the D Thomas pick. I thank God Broncos didn’t pick Dez Bryant and think this wideout is a real steal where they got him. I am less enthused about the Tebow pick. not necessarily taking him, but giving up 2nds and moving up that high when they had other very clear areas of need. That said I think Tebow could be an exciting addition to the team and it may not pay off for another year or so.

Anyway so I give the Thomas pick an A- and Tebow a B- (leaning towards incomplete since I still don’t know quite what to think about his future. I have to put my trust in Broncos personnel.) I look forward to tomorrow though which imho will make or break this draft.

I’m not crazy about the idea of having four QBs on the roster. Perhaps Brandstater will be cut, or perhaps Orton will be even more valuable by the end of the season and McD will trade him for picks.

After being content with the QBs on our roster, I’m not happy with the Tebow selection so high, especially since he’s a project. Hopefully, in 2 years I will be excited to have him on our team. But for now, I feel like the pick could’ve been used on Odrick or had we not traded 4 times, we could’ve taken Weatherspoon.

The D. Thomas pick (although he needs to be coached up) will pay off dividends in the future. I like this pick.

Missed it by that much..

Wow. After last year’s draft and reading the mocks, there are a bunch of you that could do a better job than McD and the Brain Surgeons. I thought that they were trying to set a record for the most meaningless trades in the first round. I guess when they couldn’t find any Stone Handed Tight ends and Slow CBs to trade a first 2 seconds and a 4th for (they could probably also have gotten 6 7th rounders in return as well) they just traded up to take Tebow – who they might have gotten by staying at 42 – and if they didn’t so what?

The Thomas pick was OK but I didn’t expect to have a WTF moment in the first round. Jeesh we even got out picked by the Raiders. At least they got demonstrably better. “I just get really nervous when spending Daddy’s money” I am disappointed to say that it is still amateur hour down at Dove Valley.

McD is a liar, we are NOT trying to win now. If he had confidence in Orton we would have gone all pro center at #13 to bolster the running game, I feel really bad for Bailey, Bdawk, KnowMo. I don’t care if the bills are vikes were going to get him….we paid ALOT in a deep draft for Tebow. AM I still a bronco fan, ofcourse, but damn it’s not very fun anymore. McD is a REACHER, not all that different from the raiders, ya, I said it.

by bronco112 on Apr 22, 2010 11:13 PM MDT reply actions

I know....just being dramatic

The point is a team that was lucky to be 8 and 8 and traded away it’s proven play makers needs to use their high draft choices to get better now, not for a vanity project that will pan out in 2013, if at all. I counted at least 4 players who could start for us that were available even after we traded to 13 but these guys got cute and screwed it up again. I cut them slack for last year’s impulsive moves, but now it’s looking like a trend.

I just feel sorry for the guy who comes in to coach this team in a couple of years and inherits this mismatched group of bizzare draft choices and has to start over – again.

by mtm9 on Apr 22, 2010 11:18 PM MDT reply actions

B+

Trading: great
Tebow: risky, great upside
Thomas: risky, great upside

I think the main problem is possibly opportunity cost. Who could we have gotten instead?

I don’t think we could have gotten two 1st-round picks if one of them had been Pouncey or Iupati.

As for me, I really think intangibles matter. You take a highly skilled quarterback without any intangibles, and you’ve got Orton. Orton’s got everything except for that ability to extend plays, make something out of nothing, and assert his will on the game.

Tebow has shown all those abilities. On top of that, he’s a huge athlete. On top of that, he’s shown an ability to learn, and an attitude of being willing to apply himself. If you’re going for a risky high-upside pick, that’s the attitude you want. Honestly, I think this guy is going to be a superstar, possibly the biggest star for Denver since Elway. And he’ll never be mistaken for being a “next Elway” because he’s so different. That’s perfect.

I think underdog stated it well when he said that "tomorrow imho will make or break this draft"

I am excited about the Thomas pick. I will withhold a grade on the Tebow. We will see if there is a move to upgrade the OL depth so that we have a decent running game. We may have the people on hand right now but methinks that there is depth required and if the starters are already on the team – players to push them hard. Also an ILB. Brandon Spikes may be a target here.

We have 6 picks left. I can only hope that they are used – managed – wisely.

Obstacle or opportunity: Have we expedited our success or have we gotten in the way of our success? I guess we will see.

Thank you, John.

Grade B-

I am really not sold on McDaniels drafting strategy. That being said he knows alot more about football than me so I feel it is more of a philosophy thing. The depth in the draft really had me on board with trading down. I would have liked Pouncey at 13 or even 11 but value wise I felt it was a reach. Trading down with the Eagles for 24 getting 2 third-rounders was great but I think it took McD out of range of at least 2 of the 3 players he was willing to take at 11 (Iupati and Pouncey). I am not sure why we traded up from 24 to 22 it didn’t make a whole lot of sense NE has Moss, Holt, Aiken maybe Welker back in a year and if they wanted a wide reciever I think they would have maybe taken a chance on Dez Bryant. I also don’t believe that the Packers were looking at WRs at all and I strongly believe that D. Thomas would have been available at 24. I did like the pick and feel that he will do better than bryant and will do well in our offense but really wanted it to be 24. I think that Tim Tebow is fighter and will give his all for our team but it doesn’t change the fact that he is a second round talent and we should have waited for the value there. If the Bills wanted him that bad we should have let them have him and taken Claussen in the second round if McD really wanted a new toy that bad. Holding firm in the second round would have given us a better chance to come out of this draft smiling. I think that the players will do well and support those players but I can’t support a draft strategy that has me confused 2 years in a row.

Something to consider

In last year’s draft, a lot of folks were staunchly declaring that we absolutely had to draft defensive linemen. We drafted exactly 1.

Yet our defense rose from 30th in points and 29th in yards in 2008 to 12th in points and 7th in yards.

This year lots of folks have been staunchly declaring that we absolutely must draft offensive linemen.

Anyone else seeing a pattern here?

Grade D

B+ for Thomas, F for Tebow.

Thomas filled a need, and he was probably the best player available where the Broncos picked him.

Tebow was a little boy’s pick: McDaniels could not seem to get the stars out of his eyes long enough to realize he needed help on the lines, especially the O-line. (Shades of Bobby Anderson.) The Broncos have a good young QB by the name of Kyle Orton. They need to support him with a better cast. I fully expect Tebow to warm the bench behind Orton as long as Orton chooses to play here . . . unless Orton is jettisoned because of Tebow’s draft status, ala Brees/Rivers. Problem is, Tebow is not as good as Rivers . . .

I have given a Grade B

I think McX wheeling and dealing to pick up more draft picks which allowed us to get Tebow was superb.
Thomas and Tebow have the potential to be great players in the NFL and I love that McX have had the balls to come out and go for it.
I loved the reaction of Tebow to the pick this guy is definitely the type of man you want on this football team.
The reason I have not given it an A is because there are obviously some concerns whether both players can be top NFL players but let us sit back and enjoy the journey because its going to be exciting.

Do we need a QB?

I gave the draft a B so far because of Tebow. He’s a great guy, but we just traded for a young QB two weeks before we drated a QB in the 1st. I think Thomas is a great pick up. Huge upside and he is the big, physical receiver we need across from Gaffney and Royal/ Stokley.

A-

Although a shocking first round, I think it will pay off big time eventually. How can you fans out there NOT like this pick when you look at what Tebow has to offer? Nobody has a drive to succeed like this guy. Dedication, drive, willpower, talent….the kid has it all. Yeah, he’s raw, but so what. What college QB isn’t raw coming out, I mean come on! But one of the biggest things we should be excited about is that apparently Tebow’s learning curve – due to his drive and dedication – is shorter than other QB’s so I believe he will be starting sooner rather than later. He will be the Broncos starting QB going into next year.

And another question: How many of you fans who have been either lukewarm or haters of Orton are complaining about this pick? I’d like to know your reasons why, honestly. If you are so convinced Orton sucks how can you criticize this pick at all? The Broncos drafted one of the highest rated QB’s in round 1, what more do you freakin’ want??

And the Thomas pick looks very solid. I’m relieved they took him rather than Dez.

The Shock Is Wearing Off

I have to admit that the Tebow pick took me off guard. Right when his name was called I got an emergency call from work. Too much reality too soon.

I have bought into the conventional wisdom that he’s not ready. McD is nothing but conventional, we can all agree on that now. But as David St. Hubbins once said in Spinal Tap: ’There’s a fine line between clever and stupid". That sums up McD for me; he’s really walking that line.

However, listening to Gruden talk about him made me feel a little better.

I gave the 1st round a C. Lots of raw talent, much remains to be seen. …Future cloudy…

If we pick up a C/G, ILB, and power RB tonight I’ll be ok with everything.

Same here, the shock is wearing off…….just like any other McDaniels moves, I just have to and wait how things will play out before I completely judge.

So frustrating, but ah well. Sports isn’t always instant gratification.
