I have a question I need answered.

My wife was talking to me yesterday and asked a question that I thought I had the answer to, but after further review, I'm not sure I know the answer. Here is the question....

Why, if an NFL team loves a college player and absolutely wants that player, why don't they tell him not to enter the draft, and then just sign him as an undrafted free agent to a huge contract? Almost like a "walk on".

An example would be, say Favre tells the vikings that this is his last year. So Minn knows they need a QB, but surely, they'll pick low in round 1. What is stopping them from contacting their top rated QB, and telling him "don't get an agent, don't declare for the draft. For you doing this, we'll sign you to the same contract the #1 overall pick signs and just sign you as a free agent."

I mean, even if they did this the day before the declare date, couldn't they do this? That way, even if college found out about it, it's either A) too late to punish him, or B) they punish him, but who cares, cause he's got himself a great new contract in a few months. Is there anything the NFL could do to the team? It isn't like they can tell them that they aren't allowed to sign whoever they want to in FA as long as that person is "3 years removed from high school"...
