I Need Mental Help
Well, I’m hopeful this post will not get me criticized to the extent that most others critical of the draft were. And let me say right off the bat, I”M A BRONCO FAN TILL I DIE!! This, nor anything else will ever affect my fandom. Now, on to my negativity.
It’s really difficult for me to pinpoint WHY but I was disappointed with this draft. It has nothing to do with taking Tebow in the first. It has nothing to do with taking Thomas over Dez. It was definitely associated with what happened in the first round though.
The 2nd and 3rd rounds make me feel MUCH more comfortable with what transpired in the first. AND, stranger yet, the Akin Ayodele pick up made me significantly better. So why is it I’m so disappointed??
I actually REALLY like Thomas. I think the issue for me is that we had to pick him in the first place. The statement that McD apparently said (I have no proof) that Thomas reminds him of BMarsh just sticks me in an uncomfortable way. I’m happy to be rid of a headcase and “me first” player but…….. I would be lying if I said I didn’t really like the guy. So now I watch our young pro bowl receiver leave and we have to replace him with a draft pick. That doesn’t sit well with me. The one for one swap that is.
As for Tebow. What’s not to love about the guy? I fall into the QB camp that rookies should ALWAYS sit for a year before they go under center. So that part really doesn’t bother me. Also, assuming Tebow becomes a competent QB, is there ANYBODY else in the NFL you would want to go into a big game with under center? I can’t think of another that’s going to play with as much heart and emotions as this guy. SO why does the first round bother me?
I think it comes back to Orton. I think he’s a really good quarterback that can take us as far as anybody else can. I’m really excited to see what he does this year. Historically the only two QB’s to play under McD for more than two years have had EXCELLENT years. Tebow being on the team doesn’t threaten Orton’s position. At least not this year. So…….? Help me out. Any psycho-analysis out there?

Excuse me but I am BRONCOTILLIDIE...not you
anyway, you were disappointed in the draft because there was so little action in rounds 2-3.
In round 1, he made 5 trades. In rounds 2-3 we didn’t make any. I anticipated at least 2 trades. I think the fact that the players we took were smart picks, but not sexy picks also has to do with it. Zane Beadles and J.D. Walton are offensive lineman. It is hard to get overly excited for an offensive lineman when they aren’t really making plays.
Decker on the other hand got BroncoNation yelling in excitement. So Don’t worry. You don’t need Mental help. The lack of trades and sexy picks is why you felt a bit underwhelmed. Or at least that is my guess as to why you weren’t thrilled.
But rest assured, this draft definitely made us better. Our Offense is WAY better after this draft then before.

To be honest, I actually agree with you in part here...
I really like Orton, and the Tebow selection makes me unsure of where his future lies.
But that said, Tebow is a great addition, and either way, the Broncos will be a better team this year and next – Orton or Tebow.
We just have to wait and deal with whatever decision is made.

One thing to remember about Marshall...
Is that Miami is paying him $10 million per year. McDaniels didn’t have a problem with having Marshall on the team. He had a problem paying him $10 million a year to be on the team.
Teams have to be smart with where they spend their money. Washington used to prove this point on a yearly basis. It doesn’t matter how good a player is, eventually you’re overpaying him. Marshall’s behavioral problems just made paying him that much riskier.
We may actually have a puzzle that we might have trouble finding the pieces too!
This is a what if; What if Orton takes us to the playoffs and beyond this year or next (if there is a next) year, what do we do with 2 or three backs that certainly 1 or 2 of them want to be starters someday? This is a conundrum that might be hard to solve…Down the road that is.
Ahh, now you understand the reason we watch this stuff, this thing called NFL Football
Seriously, without this type of “hook” that gets us thinking, pondering, cringing and being conflicted…would it be as interesting?
Here is some help
"As for Tebow. What’s not to love about the guy?"
Let’s start with the obvious. He has horrible throwing mechanics that required him to completely change his throwing motion AFTER his college football career ended… Yum.. That he took most snaps out of shotgun in college and will have to learn how to take snaps and drop back from center with three, five and seven step drops he has little game experience with. He only needs to learn how to read defenses out of an NFL offense and not some gimmick offense that only works in college. He is left handed and we have the best young blind side protecting LT in the NFL (a huge positive that is mitigated quite a bit by a left handed passing QB).
So there are a few things not to like.
In my opinion.

I agree that Tebow has much to work on & that being a back up for at least a year would be good for him
However, I’m not as convinced that he will need to spend as much time learning to operate from under center as many folks think.
For example, in 2009, looking just at 3rd down plays 76.3% (174/228) of the plays were run out of the shotgun. A quick survey of the play by play of the Cincinnati game shows that 31/51 plays (60.8%) were run out of the shotgun. My guess is that if we were to look at the play-by-play for all the games, that figure would remain fairly steady at somewhere around 60-70% of the plays being run out of the shotgun.

Our draft looks like a B- to me.
A high risk high reward pick with Thomas, whom is a project right now.
A reach in round 1 for Tebow, a big reach in round 2.
Good value in rounds 3 and 5. A good nickel CB in round 7 in case Smith continues to suck.
A wasted pick in round 6 with Seth Olsen on the roster (unless Olsen was a wasted pick in 2009).
In my opinion.
