Onus is on Brandon Marshall (and his dumb agent)
Coach McDaniels stated to NFLN “we meet with Brandon and asked if he wanted to just stay with the Broncos, if so then we would tender him at the highest. But if he wanted to test the market for his value then we would tender him at the first round”.
Brandon Marshall has now realized what his value is in the current market. I think that if a team blows the Broncos away with a trade offer then they will make the trade. If not then the Broncos will keep their WR and move on. I do expect Brandon to be in a Bronco uniform in 2010.
I also agree with Sayre, Bena, KK, Stedlfeld, and others that the Broncos will do EVERY thing to trade down the #11 pick. I do understand that teams give false indications when preparing for the draft. Are the players that visited Dove the ONLY ones that McX will draft? I think not. If the Bronco board has 2-4 players that are top shelve and one ‘falls’ to #11, would they make the pick? I think so.
But if their board is ‘on target’ with what they thought would happen in the top 10 then I think McX starts the plan to garner extra picks.

Agree on Marshall
He’ll be in predominantly Orange this season, and may get an attractive offer to stay. I know I’ll get some grief for this, but, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sheffler stays too. The mockers will miss out on that magical 3rd from the Bungles. I have no problem with a trade down from 11. Just as long as C Pouncy or WR Benn from Illinois is the target.
Actually, I was wondering when
somebody would clearly state that the logic of letting Scheffler test the market is very analagous to Marshall’s situation. No grief from me! Still kind of hope somebody wants to give us somethng for him, though. Just tired of players that don’t appear buy into a team concept completely.
I agree that teams create smoke-screens with workouts.
Last year Denver picked 4 players that were brought in for workouts Moreno, Quinn, Ayers and A. Smith. But I think that had something to do with the fact that they reached for both Smith and Quinn.
Your thoughts about BM are right on I don’t think Denver will get any kind of value.
I believe the Broncos will trade down to the late teens and try to pick up Mike Iupati or Dan Williams...
McDaniels and Xanders cannot be happy with just 6 picks in the draft. And it does appear that the #11 spot for the Broncos is a void where no one we want will be there and anyone we need will be a “reach”.
Verbose in style, dispersion of thought, procrastination in life.

Well… Our shortage of picks in this draft is a self inflicted wound courtesy of McX being far too aggressive in the 2009 draft with the Phonz and Bradstater trades and then the LeKevin Smith trade in preseason.
A lot of teams want to move down, it won’t be easy. I think we can do it, but it won’t net a fortune of 2nd and 3rd round picks like we hope.
Good news about BM likely coming back. I really really don’t see how trading away a 100+ catch WR for a 2nd round pick helps McD or improves Denver in any way. I very much hope common sense wins out and Marshall returns in 2010 under a LT deal that makes sense for Denver and makes Marshall financially secure.
In my opinion.
I agree, not all trades or picks will work out..
If you hit 2 out of four then your tops. I still have hope Phonz. A 5th for Kevin Smith still looks high (unless 2010 is his year).
Whether or not the Phonz improves in 2010, we were far too agressive in the 2009 draft instead of letting the picks come to us. If we do that again in 2010, I’ll be really bummed out.
In my opinion.
Agreed....
especially when you consider that McD and team did not have enough time to prepare for the 2009 draft. They admitted as much and yet were still oddly aggressive going after players in the draft.
"Pain don't hurt" - Swayze (Road House) -- We miss you man!
The agression could have been from a limited number of guys that they had the time to look at, so when the chance came to get them, they felt they had to jump.

You could be right...
but it seems a poor strategy because the players jumped over were not evaluated in this scenerio so McD and company did not know if they were better. It would have been smarter to not trade draft picks for 2010 to move up in 2009 if we didn’t truly know the talent in the draft. It seems best to have more draft picks in the draft that McD and company have actually evaluated thoroughly.

I'm a McD supporter, McG, but
you are on target here (again, darn it). I only hope we can chalk it up to a rookie in a rushed situation…… and that the damage done is limited by the eventual development of Phonz and Brandstater into players worthy of the trades. You have made consistent and logical arguements all year regarding last year’s draft strategy. I suspect that if it weren’t that by doing so publicly he would undermine a player, even McD would bow to the logic. Whatever else, McD is a “team first” sort of guy,so he won’t do that…. I think the only way we can judge his view of last year strategy is by this year’s strategy.
As for me, I still hope that be cheering and touting for the best outcome, I am somehow influencing it…not logical, I know. If Phonz makes All Pro season 3 or 4, I won’t be saying McD knew it all along… I’ll just be glad for our team.
Very possibly Tim
But there are going to be teams that will want someone at 11 that is the Guy that gets them to the superbowl. Hayden maybe. This will be the leverage to get a great deal to move down.
I agree
1. I would only be OK trading Brandon for either of Seattle’s 1st Round Picks anything less than the 14th Pick I think isn’t enough for Brandon Marshall. So yes I think that Brandon Marshall returning is probably 75%.
2. I think trading down and drafting Maurkice Pouncey or Mike Iupati makes a ton of sense. C/G is our Biggest need and drafting one of those players and picking up a extra pick would be Great.
3. I think that Philly who just traded McNabb is a major Trading Partner because they have soooo many picks. Most teams with that many picks trade up if they target a player.
So trading the 11th to Philly for a extra 2nd Would be a Great Move and Denver will still get the player they really want.
Too far to trade down with Eagles
I think trading down to #24 from #11 is too big a gamble for the sake of receiving extra draft picks. We need at least 2-starters from this draft to improve next season. Both of your picks would be an excellent choice but I think they will be gone before the 24th pick. A possible trade partner could be the 49ers who have two #1’s at 13 & 17. The Steelers would also be looking to move up with the 18th pick.

Anyone else remember
all the people bashing McD for only placing the first round tender on Marshall? Now we find out that it was Marshall that basically decided that he’d rather see what his value is rather than have the highest tender placed on him. Seems like another class move by McD. He could have left Marshall our of the process altogether but he gave him the option to seek his own trade. Maybe people will back off McD a bit seeing as when all the info comes out we usually see that McD hasn’t been the bad guy he’s made out to be. But probably not right…some people will always bash this guy at any opportunity.

I was one of those people
I was wrong and McDaniels was right. That said, let’s not make this a blanket statement implying we should never question a decision. Questioning decisions and occasionally stepping out of the “yes line” is a healthy part of of being a football fan.
The best thing about this is that we’re not going to lower our price and it means Brandon is at least open to staying. Teams will either raise their price, now knowing that we’re not in fact desperate to move him, or BM will begin his slow crawl back to us to continue in more realistic contract negotiations.
Give me impact at center, copmetence at guard and an upgrade at linebacker - sprinkle in strides from having the same system for two years in a row - and I'll show you a contender!
Likely for whatever they can get for him
Problem is the closer it gets to the draft the more valuable draft picks become. If I had to bet on trade compensation, it would be a 2010 3rd and 2011 1st/2nd conditional.
IMO
Spoken like a true San Diego fan.
Sorry foil, Marshall will remain in Denver unless we get a trade offer that blows us away. He was no angel the last few years and he didn’t shot his way out of town. Nothing has changed for the worse that would make us suddenly give up on him at this point.
In my opinion.
I know you think thats a bad deal McD
But its not as bad as it looks. You know Im trying to be reasonable not flame the masses Orton. Future picks can be valuable if you are patient enough to marinate them. (Wow this basketball game is nuts)
But you are right about one thing. I cant wait for the Broncos to trade him, no matter how many picks they receive in return. Accepting a future pick as part of the compensation does seem like the reality to me, albeit IF Marshall is actually traded.
You see by trading the 2010 pick during the 2009 draft you really make this trade harder to pull the trigger on. Consider if the Broncos had two first round picks this year, they wouldnt need to get another first. They could simply just pull the trigger on a deal that gave them a 3rd this year and a 2011 1st.
IMO
No Way
We get our price, a first, or take a walk. We are not going to be powerhoused by Seattle, or anyone else. You want steak you pay for it.
No
The tender required 1st or nothing.
He signs a contract, we’ll try to match.
I don’t think trading him is the goal. A market based value appraisal is the goal.
We haven’t been able to negotiate with him so we’re trying to get another team to do it for us.
"My job description is to win football games. I'm a hard worker. I'm not flashy by any means, but my job is to play football and win and I plan to do that." Kyle Orton
bfree..you have always stated this but you have not answer to whom?
Bring some content to your remark. If you just plain do not like him then say so.
Never stated I didn't like him and as long as he's in a Bronco uniform I'll root for him.
I just don’t think he really wants to be in Denver anymore and I know, he’s said a lot of different things both positive and negative…I don’t know who will take him, but he is first round material, that, everyone knows and a few need a big time receiver. The draft is far off right now even if it’s only 2 1/2 weeks away. There will be a lot of fireworks on draft evening…
Was this statement in a recent interview?
I haven’t been able to find it anywhere. But I did find that when you google McDaniels and NFLN you get plenty of info about McDaniels MFn F-bomb!
FanHouse had an Adam Shefter report about Seattle signing
Brandon Marshall to an offer sheet. Part of the report was quoted from NFLN about the reason Brandon only had a 1st round tender.
find the link NFLN archives
I wasn't aware of that quote on NFLN
where did that quote come from???
This is great news to me. It means we are handling this thing with the intelligence that I expect from pure professionals. Hopefully, Marshall is growing from this and becomes a great teammate this next year. IMO still possible…..no, I am not a fan either.
Moving Quinn into the QB spot could make a big impact. I think Marshall could get that sense of brotherhood again with a young gunslinger.
Quinn isnt a gunslinger
from everything I remember of him in college he had an average arm (imo worse the Orton)

you're right
I should have said a young guy that plays with attitude and isn’t scared to take shots down the field. Its technically not a gunslinger, but its really about the attitude. IMO, Orton is too cautious and the pressure McD puts on QBs doesn’t help. All in all its a change of pace I think Marshall could warm up to.

When Pat announced that the Broncos were going to accommodate Cutler's trade request...
John wrote a post stating what potential teams were going to have to offer just to get the Broncos interested; i.e. two 1st-rounders.
The immediate reaction was loads of fans of other teams (and Bronconiks) coming on MHR and calling us/them/you/him/her/it/etc. crazy and/or stupid if we thought we were going to get some huge bounty for a disgruntled player that didn’t want to be here (sound familiar?). Some were, if I recall correctly, offering (on behalf of their team) a 2nd-round pick and maybe another player just to make us feel better.
Just saying. *
( * Not that we’re going to get a huge bounty, but that some people have an awfully short memory.)

Haven't hear a whole lot from the Bears fans lately have we?
Your absolutely right and the fact that we have so many analytical genius on here, makes me feel proud to be a part of MHR. If someone makes a prediction about who the Broncos pick (mock draft) in the draft it’s OK, because it’s construed as a prediction and an opinion. But, if you say this player or that player is going somewhere else without giving details of how you know or where did you get the information from you get chastised for it. It’s just an opinion folks don’t get your ruffles up until he’s out the door…Like McNabb was yesterday, it happens that quickly. Marc Bulger was released by the Rams the other day after I said he would be cut over a month ago, does that make me a pyshic? no, I just predicted it and the writing is on the wall with Marshall too, just my gut feeling that’s all…
Weatherspoon
I think with the addition of Iupati or Pouncey…. we HAVE to get Weatherspoon, I’m sold on this guy for sure and would LOVE to grab him and one of the big O linemen.
