Tebow turning down '7-Figure Endorsement Deals' to focus on football

All's been quiet on the Tim Tebow front since the end the end of the Broncos' Rookie mini-camp.  Turns out Tebow has been quite busy, living in Memphis, TN with his agent, Jimmy Sexton.  Tebow has been using the time to work out - the NFL bars rookies from working out at the team facility - and staying focused on football.  He has also been inundated with endorsement offers says Ben Volin of the Palm Beach Post.

"I’m trying to work hard and not get my mind cluttered with all that," Tebow told the newspaper about endorsement deals that come his way. "When it gets to the point when something needs to be presented to me, I see it. Right now, it’s all ball for me."

It's hard not to like that last statement, "....it's all ball for me."  Part of becoming great is the desire to work for it.  Tebow obviously has that in spades.

Is it hard for Tebow's agent to see one of his star clients turning down such lucrative offers?

Star-divide

"Within the next five years, Tim clearly has a chance to be one of the most endorsable athletes on the planet," Sexton said. "I had one CEO of a major Fortune 500 company tell me, ‘You know what, Jimmy? For a corporation to put a face on their brand, this guy (Tebow) is the real deal. He’s the one guy who’s not going to be a scandal two or three years from now.’"

That's huge point #2.  Tebow is highly unlikely to end up on the back page in some kind of scandal.  That will leave to endorsement deals open - assuming he is successful and the Broncos are winning.

For now, Tebow is doing the Brett Favre routine - working out at private high schools, going through drills with high school players.

"I got in a lot of good work, and I met a lot of good people," Tebow told the newspaper. "It was so much fun to get back in high school facilities, to get back to your roots and just know that level is where you started. I worked, hung out and just had a great time."

Of course, the well isn't completely dry for Tebow - he's already signed deals with EASports and Nike.  Beyond that, however, the commercials can wait.  It is all football - and that has to make all Broncos fans happy.

There was one more tidbit in the article that made me smile - Tebow has been trading texts with John Elway.

"I’ve texted back and forth with him (Elway), and that’s truly an honor," Tebow said. "He has been very supportive of me. He’s one of the all-time best."

Another example of how Tebow gets it.  Several quarterbacks in Denver have almost shied away from shadow of Elway.  Tebow will seemingly bask in it.  In Denver, that is half the battle.

Way to go Tebow

But if I were him, I’d sign some deals with sponsors. It hasn’t hurt Peyton Manning, and I’m sure it won’t hurt Tebow either. There will come a time, if he pushes them all aside, that they no longer want him.
Other that that, I think it’s fantastic that he’s so focused on football. That’s what we need, and he shows his maturity and dedication with every word, and every action that he does. He truly is one of the only players who’s actions speak louder than his words, for the good, not the bad.

But with Manning, how many deals did he sign before his 3-13 rookie year?

That was an important developmental stage in his career – if he did sign any big deals, I didn’t hear about them back in the day.

Got to disagree with one sentence.
There will come a time, if he pushes them all aside, that they no longer want him.

I can see a company using that to their advantage. They could say something like Tim Tebow turned down indorsement offers from Company A, Company B, and Company C, but agreed to indorse our product. Could work out very well.

by CompUser on May 13, 2010 11:45 AM MDT up reply actions

Absolutely...

If he pans out, he could be one of the most loved athletes in the country. I don’t see any company shying away from having him tied to their product.

by Kgrone on May 13, 2010 12:10 PM MDT up reply actions

That also depends on how they were rejected

if the PR guy says “sorry but Tim will never sponser your product” – then they will never be back.

If the PR guy says “Tim wants to get his feet wet with the team before doing any endorsements” then the companys will call back in about 6 months

It has affected Payton

Payton Manning has only won 1 superbowl and appeared in 1 other and this is his 13th season coming up. Elway won two and carried his team to 3 others in 15 seasons, yet Manning is on pace to break all QB lifetime acheivment records. He’s too distracted by his commercial whoring to win the big games. I really don’t like how many commercials and advertisements he’s in (mostly because he’s not a bronco and I have to stare at his face during Bronco game commercial breaks, although the one where he’s getting all pissed at the 4th grade kids in a pickup game is pretty funny, oh and some of those Sony HDTV commercials were funny too.) He’s still a commercial slut.

Gimme a break

The reason the Colts only won 1 SB in 10 years is not because of Manning… its because there are 32 teams trying to win the prize every year, and some of them are equally good or better as TEAMS than the Colts have been… aka NE, Pitt, NOLA last year, etc.

Manning is the best QB in the game, and blaming any lack of success on him is patentedly absurd. If anything, he’s the only reason the Colts have been as good as they have been (which has only been one of the best teams in the NFL for the past decade).

As maxwellsdemon said… one of the most unfounded comments ever…

This dude is killin me!

I was so pissed when we gave up 3 picks to draft him. I was yelling at the t.v, cussing my beloved Broncos, making my wife think I’m cuckoo for cocoa puffs. Well, she already knew that. Anywho, I am really warming up to this pick. Tebow is really making it hard not to be anything but thrilled about getting him. I am still skeptical on whether he can play or not, but off the field this kid is Rod Smith times 10.

What a drag it is getting old. - Mick

I'd say he's Rod Smith times 1, which is still pretty good

Most NFL players work hard. I think when he actually gets in the league he’ll find that his work ethic, while good, is not as extraordinary as he thinks.

hard to compare him to Rod Smith

Two totally different people playing two totally different positions :P

But if you are comparing him to his work ethic and priorities with the game, you could be on track with something!

by Broncs55 on May 13, 2010 6:58 AM MDT up reply actions

I think thats exactly what he means

hence the words “off the field”

This kid has all the personality traits and work ethic, and priority valuations of some of the ALL-TIME Bronco best. I mean WHO TURNS DOWN 7 FIGURES BEFORE EVEN PLAYING?!

think about that….marinate in it a minute….if you were playing a sport where a working life-span of 10 years is a GOOD LONG RUN in the league….where injury could dismantle your entire career ANY GIVEN DAY….even TODAY!!! and he turns down 7 figures on top of what he’s gauranteed…..I LOVE THIS PICK….man I hope he makes all our excitement worth it ON the field

I wonder what the Vets think about him?

You hear guys like Ray Lewis popping off about him in the media and now you hear about him turning down 7 figure deals. On the surface it sounds great that he is interested in only football but I wonder if there’s going to be some resentment in the locker room from some of the vets that dont get the big offers like Tebow is.

You probably get this a lot. This isn't the real Caesar's Palace is it?....Did Caesar live here?

I have to imagine its nothing new for them

Every year the first round pick comes in with a bigger contract than the majority of the team before doing a damn thing on the field. I know it would frustrate me, but it comes with the territory and you just have to hope the kids live up to there contracts and don’t measure their own success by their relative paycheck.

How Can You Not Love This Guy

I think and hope Denver fans look back on the drafting of Tebow the way that 49er fans (and I was a few decades ago) felt when Joe Montana was drafted (running QB, weak arm, a winner in college who can’t play pro ball). I can still remember the day Bill Walsh announced Montana as his starter over Steve DeBerg, the prototypical pocket QB. The entire 49er community was in such an uproar about what an idiot the new coach (a professorial type at that) was and how the 49ers were destined for 5 more years of horrible football. Not saying Tebow will have Montana’s career path. Just a lot of the same jibber jabber from then seems to be rehashed here and now.

Love it John

Gotta love this guy. This action SHOULD create a domino effect, but sadly it probably won’t. What a classy move here by Tebow. I love that Elway is giving the kid tips and pointers. Wonder why he’s never reached out to our other young QB’s, or at least from what I know…

A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is drudgery. But a vision with a plan can change the world.

by Sayre Bedinger on May 13, 2010 7:15 AM MDT reply actions

Part of it

I would imagine, is that he did. Elway has always been somewhat involved in the organization. He probably has talked to many of our QB’s, of course when a QB comes out and says I have a better Arm than Elway had….I wouldn’t expect Elway to keep talking to him after that.

I also think that part of Elways absence from the hallowed halls of Mile High may have something to do with a power struggle between him and Shannahan…..(this is purely and entirely speculative) I wonder if his reason for wanting to be more involved is

A. Shannahan the Czar of football (whom i’m hoping to meet at Redskins Training camp this year and get my Broncos hat signed!!!!!) was there and would not give St. John ANY say in anything….

B. He likes McD and now that he feels the organization is going in the right direction, we get some talent that he respects, he feels he has been gone long enough and established his life enough that he can afford the time!

I don’t know if ANY of this is true, but it would make sense.

Mike and John were thisclose when John was playing. John really expected to be a part of the management and the ownership when he retired.

Mike didn’t really want John’s interference. He wanted to run the team almost dictatorially.

Tiger suffers from narcissism. Tiger is in love with himself (and apparently 100 other women, boo ya) I don’t see this with Tebow. He’s about as genuine a guy as I’ve ever seen. You look at this guy and you think, okay he can’t be for real he is a creation of the media or his own success. But the more you get to know him and hear other people talk the more you realize he is for real.

Tebow from what I have read, isn’t out preaching the gospel. However he has acted on it in his way of life, and he has put specific phrases on his “warrior paint” under his eyes.

In fact, he said, almost unbelieving— ‘I think we just got John Elway’, because he wasn’t sure it could possibly be true.

Thanks for rekindling those memories!

Elway’ leadeship and effort was phenomenol, and added to his physical talent was only able to be defeated by far superior teams. BTW, if Elway doesn’t get a huge thigh bruise that keeps him out of the second half against the Bills in the AFC chanmionship, I think he takes us to yet another SB.

Yeah, but I was...

…a kid. So, I was counting on about 14 straight. The thing with Elway was that he was viewed almost unanimously as a paradigm changer. He might have been the first of super-hyped athletes. So for Denver to pull that off was absolutely jaw dropping. It redefined exciting.

Excited, but Guarded

I was excited when Elway was drafted, but I also was concerned with the pressure that would be placed on him. (I also took lots of heat here in Baltimore!) Dan Reeves was protective of Elway, perhaps too much, and it took Shanahan to release the final talent to get him over the top.

My concern with Tebow is that the pressure on him will be enormous and immediate. McDaniels does not demonstrate a lot of patience and I have concerns about putting Tebow under too much pressure too soon. In addition, I hope Tebow concentrates on football and does not get caught up in other issues. I want to enjoy him playing on Sunday. What he does with his personal life is fine, especially since he is unlikely to get into trouble and hurt the team, but I am not big on putting athletes on a pedestal. Frankly, I am not big on putting anyone on a pedestal… we are all human.

I had watched Elway at Stanford

I thought he was the best college QB I had ever seen. Very, Very excited. His early struggles made me aware of the difference in college and pro, but I knew he was going to be good. However, I did not yet realize how much the rest of the team needed to be improved before we could actuallly win a SB. Eventually, and retrospectively, I decided that “the reason” Elway had so many come-from-behind wins was that he was placed in a trailing-4th-quarter position so frequently by the extremely conservative style of Reeves. Reeves seemed to only release the hounds in that last quarter, and Elway was able to respond. Shanny changed that, and Elway’s stat line and bit time wins moved right on up.

BTW- nobody asked directly, but I think Elway was the better college QB of the two….not statistcally opinion, but the “eye test” on the field variety of opinion.

“Elway is ONE of the greatest QB’s of all time.” Come on Tebow, everybody knows he IS THE BEST of all time. I’m just kidding of course.

This pick may be the greatest thing the Broncos have done in years or it may not work out, we’ll find out in the next couple seasons, but it won’t be because of lack of effort and poor attitude. And I’m fine with that because realistically that’s all you can ask for.

Tim Tebow = player my nieces/nephews can be proud to support.

That’s the biggest thing to me. This is a player that my nieces and nephews can look up to and not have to make excuses for his personality traits. The last great Broncos quarterback was Jake Plummer, in my opinion, and I would love to hear what he thinks about Tim Tebow joining the MIle High City. I know Jake pretty much hates Shanahan, but if I remember right he was always a fan of this city and the fans here. I would love to know what he thinks about Tim Tebow, considering they have more in common that most people admit to.

was asked specifically and repeatedly to admit that the Superbowl ad cost him some potential endorsements. It seemed the questions got pretty “pointy” as if to show him as being stupid for having done that. I thought it all very petty.

He’ll have his choices of endorsement deals and I’m sure he’ll be valued as an endorser.

Tebow is still human

I remember when we got Elway and that was all you heard about. If I remeber right some questioned his winning ways at Stanford. When he didn’t come right in and win right away people dogged him. He was under such scrutiny it was unbelievable. They even questioned his choice of what kind of candy he gave out at Holloween. Remember that? I wasn’t thrilled when we drafted Tebow. I wanted some major OL help. Tebow has his feet on the ground and I do like that. I even think he may run some Wildhorses formations this year. Tebow seems to work real hard and that is what I respect. You can have someone that has all the talent in the world and not suceed. Give me someone who is willing to work hard anytime.

I'd have to check, but

I think we lost Alzedo to a brain tumor. :(

We have probably said it several times,

yet how can you not like Tebow whether you are a Bronco fan or not. I mean this shows where his mind is at (not that we didn’t know already). Concetrate on football and deal with those other endorsements at a later time. I also think that because of who he is personally, you know he is going to be careful about what he endorses anyway.

All the blocked quotes were perfect epeciall the last one. Denver is Elway’s town along with the whole state of Colorado. It is a big shadow when you are a QB for the Broncos. However I think Tebow is the guy who, as you said, will bask in it.

The headline is an overstatement I think

Not to put too fine a point on it, in the first quote Tebow did not say he has or would turn down any offers. I think all you can take from the statement is he isn’t personally seeking them out. I’d interpret that as he is letting his agent work out the details to the point of a singable contract. I am in fact glad to hear the things he is saying, but I don’t see him saying he won’t do endorsements. If I missed something in the article, my apologies to you John, but in the absence of hard evidence I’m still betting we see him with an endorsement contract or two by training camp.

One note

Tebow’s agent, Jimmy Sexton, is also Philip Rivers agent as well as some coaches, and isn’t the type of agent to thrust his clients onto the market. So while I’m sure Tebow wanted to stay focused, he sure wasn’t arguing with his agent over this, his agent has shown that he doesn’t need his players and coaches to be in the spot light, as long as they get big, long contracts, which they do, then he’ll be making plenty of money.

I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.

“The kids were just awed by how far he hit the ball,” Sexton said. “The best thing about Tim is he thinks he’s just another guy and acts that way. He’s oblivious to everything going on around him. He doesn’t think he’s a big deal. I asked him the other day how he stayed so humble, how come he didn’t get the big head compared to a lot of other athletes.”

“You have to decide what you have to be proud about, and being a football player doesn’t make you any more special than anybody else,” Tebow said. “Football gives me a platform and with that platform comes a responsibility and obligation to make a difference in people’s lives.”
