One thing to keep in mind though, it takes three to four years for college defensive ends to make the transition to outside linebackers in the NFL. So don’t give up on Jammie (Kirlew) or sell him short of one day becoming a good or great linebacker for the Broncos.

This should help put Robert Ayers' transition into perspective. It's why Mike Mayock feels that Ayers will be the pick of the draft defensively in 2 more years.

I thought Mayock said year 2 for Ayers
I know Mayock was really high on Ayers and I even thought I heard him say he would be a factor his rookie year (ok, so this would have been a miss). However, I have read a couple posts quoting Mayock as saying Ayers would likely struggle his first year and breakout the 2nd. I (for one) think we will be pleasantly surprised by his play this year. I predict he will be our breakout player next year
I think Ayers didn't struggle a lot, but
he sure didn’t have the year that Orakpo did. But I think Orakpo was/is playing a different position than Ayers, so I think I’m going to take Mayock’s word on this and give him some more time, just like all rookies (Knowshon).

I think they play the same position now
Since Shanny is switching Washington to a 3-4. Last year I think he played OLB in the 4-3 instead of DE, and it still worked out pretty well.
