Broncos sign free agent WR Dicky Lyons, release RB Chris Brown

The Denver Broncos on Monday signed free-agent wide receiver Dicky Lyons, a first-year player from the University of Kentucky.

The club also on Monday waived rookie running back Chris Brown, whom it signed as a college free agent from the University of Oklahoma on April 26.

Lyons (5-foot-11, 190 pounds) is a first-year wide receiver from the University of Kentucky who joined the Broncos as a free agent on May 3, 2010

He played 39 career games (28 starts) at Kentucky from 2004-08, totaling 141 receptions for 1,752 yards (12.5 avg.) with 18 touchdowns.  Lyons finished his career ranked fifth in Kentucky history in receptions, fourth in receiving yards and third in touchdown catches

Here are some more numbers from Lyons' time at Kentucky -

Returned 29 kickoffs for 687 yards (23.7 avg.) during his career at Kentucky... Became the first Wildcat to post multiple touchdown receptions in three consecutive games as a sophomore in 2006... Registered a career-high 12 receptions vs. Middle Tennessee State (9/13/08) as well as a personal-best 124 receiving yards (3 TDs) vs. Florida (10/20/07)... Attended Holy Cross High School in New Orleans, where he was a three-sport standout in football, golf and track... Totaled nearly 2,000 receiving yards and returned 15 kicks for touchdowns during his career at Holy Cross in addition to handling punting duties for the school... Father, Dicky Lyons Sr., also played wide receiver for Kentucky (1966-68) and had his jersey retired by the school... Dicky Lyons was born on Nov. 18, 1985, in Metairie, La.

Aw man

I just fanshotted this. lol.

Chris Brown was considered one of the free agent prospects that people thought could make the team and be effective.

He was the first player released. Just further proof that we have no idea what to expect with McD.

Other facts

Richard Lyons Sr. was on UK’s team in 1966-1968. His jersey was retired after his performance. Dicky’s performance wasn’t quite as spectacular – he has borderline speed (to, to be fair, it’s about Brandon Marshall’s, so it’s not awful), not a great explosion and he’s got velcro hands. Basically, he’s a possession receiver who’s tough, catches the tough ball and isn’t all that fast. It may take a year, or a few on the PS, but he could produce for Denver ala Rod Smith.

Dicky was dropped with a knee injury and missed the last 6 games of the season. For this reason, he wasn’t invited to Combine and dropped off of many team’s draft boards. Two things are interesting, though – one is that his team’s production went south when he was injured. Second is that even with ,missing 1/2 of a year, he finished his career at Kentucky with 141 receptions for 1,752 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns, ranked fifth, fourth and third, respectively, in school history. Not bad for someone who missed half a year. He could be a good project. He returned five kickoffs for a 29.3-yard average as a freshman before opponents began kicking away from him

It all starts with the lines

Two Things;

I think Broncos are still concerned about depth at WR or maybe they just need them for TC and looking to add an additonal WR for the PS.

RB situation I think is looking great and if Toney Baker is healthy he should be the 4th RB on the 53 man squad. As far as Chris Brown he didn’t have a chance to beat out “Buck” or Arrington. Toney is the guy for the red zone.

Two of our WR are injured too...might just be the need for bodies for practice until these two get healthy. :)

I think he was too much like Moreno & Buck

What we need is a FB who can get the 1st downs on 3rd and 1 or score on 1st and goal.

I think he will catch on some where he’s got talent just not enough to displace Buck or JJ.

The name says it all

Does this guy not scream “Special Teams Superstar” to anyone? Now that he’s healed from his injury, this is a great guy to have on your scout team at the very least. Dude probably does run-through’s like they are the national title game. I could easily see him getting a a year on the PS provided he is eligible, and making the final roster in 2011 as a special teamer and potentially a reserve WR role if Stokley calls it a career after this year.

A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is drudgery. But a vision with a plan can change the world.

Dicky Lyons Jr. is the real deal

Being a lifelong Gators fan (now Broncos fan via way of Tim Tebow), I got to see Dicky Lyons in actions for a few years when the Gators would play Kentucky. Besides Randall Cobb, a very athletic and dangerous QB/WR on Kentucky, Dicky Lyons Jr. was another player the Gators had a lot of respect for. He is dangerous out on the field, and has done a number of great plays against the Gators. Even with a sub-par quarterback, he still did damage against the Gators top-ranked defense.

On top of that, Dicky Lyons Jr., as his name implies, has a father of the same name who played in the NFL as a defensive back. He was drafted in the 4th round in 1969 by the Atlanta Falcons. I think Jr. also has other family members with professional sport pedigree, if I remember the announcers talking about it properly (Verne Lundquist can actually be informative at times.) I imagine with his family, Lyons Jr. probably understands a lot about the NFL and the work ethic they require to succeed.

With that said, I’m not surprised to see him signed after being a free agent. I wish him much success with the Broncos!
