Civil War: Finding a Balance

With every post I have tried to remain neutral and just present facts, being a sociology major, it's more fun to watch others debate the topic then to do so myself, but as of recent, MHR has found itself in somewhat of a civil war. This war is taking place between those who label themselves, or are labeled, as "kool-aiders" and the "haters." In two well discussed posts, Reality Check on the McDaniels Era and Cutlerism Haunting MHR by atwaterassasin27 and Alexander Wall respectively, as well as subsequent posts, members here have debate for over 800 comments and over 40 rec's worth of opinion and fact. But at the end of the day, the site becomes even more divided, so as I sat thinking about this, I felt that something should be done. I am pretty new to this MHR, but after spending some time here, I have found that if people can be educated to better understand someone else point of view, it is much hard to dislike them.

Star-divide

Lend Me Your Ears!

With this post I wanted to make a call to the people of Mile High Report, to find balance in all your opinions, to learn before you judge and to act like adults. Now with these two extremes that have been formed, it is hard for a fan who supports the Broncos but doesn't agree with McD 100% to know where to stand. Being a person who loves the Broncos, like what we have done in preparation for next season, but still have a few concerns about the plan, I am trying to find this balance. So I send a message to these two warring brothers, and hope to help them see some light.

Kool-Aid Drinker: Hey guys, I'm sure you are enjoying some fresh kool-aid straight from McD's cooler. A lot of things have happened this off-season to show how we have major potential, drafting Tim Tebow, what a stud, beefing up our offense and defensive line, plus keeping some key secondary pieces like Brian Dawkins. Things definitely look up for next season, but I want to point out that those who may make negative points such as:

Drafting Tim Tebow may carry risks

or

Some of McDaniels personnel decisions aren't completely kosher to me

Doesn't mean they hate the Broncos. And here is why, to suppress or shun people who have differing opinions then you is censoring, and that is bad, especially in a country that is kind of proud of that sort of thing. Kurt Huber, a resistance fighter against the Nazi's said this:

A state (MHR) that suppresses all freedom of speech, and which by imposing the most terrible punishments, treats each and every attempt at criticism, however morally justified, and every suggestion for improvement as plotting to high treason, is a state that breaks an unwritten law.

The part in parenthesis is obviously added by me, mostly because Hitler was a Raider fan, but the point remains that when we start turning anyone that has criticism into a hater or troll, we go against allowing people to have opinions. Now I am in no way comparing MHR to Nazi Germany, just a side note. Coaches more then anyone appreciate constructive criticism, it allows them to grow, fix problems and evaluate their team. If no one ever told McD he was doing something wrong, he would never become a better coach. Winston Churchill said:

Criticism may not be agreeable, but it is necessary. It fulfils the same function as pain in the human body. It calls attention to an unhealthy state of things.

Now, it's fine to be optimistic about the future, just don't shut down others who haven't seen the light yet, while there are people who are trying to hate on our sacred team, they are a minority. Most of all, when someone presents a fact that proves you wrong, don't ignore it. Now carry on my brothers, there is plenty more kool-aid to come.

Haters: Now I realize many of you take offense to this label, and I have been called this term and been brought into this infamous fraternity many times. Now I understand friends, McD is making some strange moves, ones that are sometimes hard to accept, but we must let our unsettled nature ruin a good discussion. George Jean Nathan once said:

Criticism, like rain, should be gentle enough to nourish a man's growth without destroying his roots.

By outright attacking someone, you don't give them the time to fix what they may be doing wrong, or to allow someone to become accustomed to your side of the story. Writer Edger Watson Howe is known to say:

Don't abuse your friends and expect them to consider it criticism.

There is a difference between having a good discussion and outright destruction of another person's belief. Now I get where you are coming from, you just want those blind zealots to stop staring into the sun, but you must understand, having a positive outlook on things doesn't make them blind. Now if someone doesn't agree with you, try facts, now these are like sun glasses for them, it won't block all the sun, but it might show them the crap they are standing in. You must also realize that not everyone that supports McDaniels is blinded with hope, so don't lump a few sun starers in with everyone else, just as you don't want to be labeled with the people who truly do hate the Broncos, like Hitler.

To Both:

While there are extremists in both sides, don't assume and lump everyone into one of those two categories. It's okay to want your team to succeed, to believe in the direction a coach is taking and to be optimistic, but you shouldn't ignore those who have legitimate concerns, especially those backed with facts. On the other side, it's okay to be worried and uncertain about moves that have been made, just be willing to be shown what good things have been done, especially when backed by facts.

The Call for Balance:

My call goes out to all Mile High Report, and maybe SBNation in general, be open minded, stand by what you believe but don't tear others down for what they believe. Charles M. Schwab, the successful steel mogul once said:

I have yet to find the man, however exalted his station, who did not do better work and put forth greater effort under a spirit of approval than under a spirit of criticism.

So long as we are respectful, we are allowed our opinion. Comments such as "no one likes you", calling people
an angry mob", "whiny" or just being rude, get us nowhere, it just brings down our community. I'm not perfect , obviously, but I strive for the middle ground, because tearing each other down, from either side, does no good. I have the wise Jeremy Bolander to thank for this quote:

Perhaps the most important segment of our membership is the group that is learning, at any given time, that there is someplace safe where they can have an opinion on the Broncos.  The value of this can't be overestimated.  When John (Bena) founded this blog, the Cutler-Plummer issue had driven a wedge into the online fan base, and online Broncos communities were being torn to shreds by these divisions.  MHR is John's dedication to the idea that Bronco's fans are ultimately a team, and need to care enough about each other not to try and tear each other apart.

We start by valuing the Broncos.  And that leads us to each other.  That is what we must protect and hold on to.

So carry on fellow Broncos fans, if we all keep rooting for them on Sunday, then that's one day we'll all agree.

I seriously feel that I just read the beginning of what could be the next ‘great’ MHR contributor…

Also….there is a very old rule in debate that whoever brings up such situations as Nazi’s, WWII, etc….automatically loses the debate……

Great Post

However I would not call it kool aid drinkers so much as fans. Just like I would not call people who don’t agree with everything going on as haters but fans. I have always said that I am all for being criticle oy your team but support your team otherwise why be a fan if you want them to fail? And I chose to look at the positive side and hope for the best and if they don’t do well then changes need to be made. Either way I think all MHR posters be it “Kool aid drinkers” or “Haters” are fans of the Logo before a coach or player.

I was trying to show both “sides” that about 80% of fans aren’t that extreme. While their are those people, most fans aren’t, they are just trying to be fans of a great team. Thanks for your points.

It is the off season

therefore, not much to talk about…so we discuss all the things that are essentially unknowable…would we be a better team with Cutler as QB…will we be a better team with Tebow as QB…what if Shanahan was still coach?, when will McD get fired? Will we trade Orton? will Orton lead us to the Super Bowl? but the real question is WHEN WILL THE SEASON START? Basically we want to talk about tangible things like QB ratings, sacks, run defense but since that is old news with a different set of players, all that is left to discuss is all the “what ifs?”, and that divides us into camps….but generally important to keep in mind that we are all Bronco fans and in the end there are so many decisions made along the way that it is all but impossible to say where the seeds of success or failure are sown…but that doesn’t keep us from speculating about it!

if I could give on word of advice to either,

to the koolaiders—caution
to the haters—patience

both sides have legitimate points, and we must remember that no coach or GM has ever been perfect with every decision they have made. Therefore, we should not be to harsh on perceived bad decisions, or be too kind on every decision made. Besides, it is ultimately time that will tell on these issues.

I think many of us ...

really have no idea what goes on in Dove Valley, Between reading what the media reports, the Broncos, and our own prognosticating … in the end it is just a guess.

Sure it is great try and figure out what is going to happen, but in the end unless your are sitting besides McD and company, it isn’t going to change the outcomes.

There is no need to ally yourself in two categories kool-aid/haters rather there should just be dedicated and opinionated fans. In the end we all root for the same cause anyway!

I assume this post has been endorsed by Mr. Bena, thus dis-allowing any “Nazi” behavior from the “haters”.

Kidding, obviously.

However, as a Kool-Aid-Aholic myself…I would like to see less of the Mc________!!!, and more of the patience you so eloquently asked for in your post. I am guilty of a low tolerence for ANY negativity towards my beloved football club. As a result, even being a die-hard fan of The Denver Broncos…I was banned from this site for a period of time. I’m thrilled to be back (among the commenting masses), as I felt like a “Diary reader” with simply the ability to see others opinions, sans interaction.

I didn't refer to hater's as Nazi's

I mentioned that Kurt Huper was a resistance fighter against the Nazi’s and related that Hitler may have been a Raiders fan. Jeremy Bolander gave this quote as well:

You need to be careful about applying “freedom of speech” principles to MHR. MHR is a blog, and is privately owned, and John has full rights to decide who gets to be a member and who doesn’t, as well as to decide what is allowed to be said and what isn’t. That being said, John makes it perfectly clear in the signup that the membership will consist of anybody who wants to talk about the broncos and do so in a civil, respectable manner, so in a lot of ways, MHR does support people having the freedom to say what they want.

I e-mailed John, but had yet to receive any response.

I noticed the articles you were talking about, and found the tone………. off. Too much chest beating and repeating and not a lot of listening. I am not a big McD fan…….. but I could be wrong. Maybe he will be the Golden Boy, like Shula, and not the flop like Belichick or Shanahans first go round (both fired). I don’t think so, but I thought Griese was going to be a great QB- he obviously was not, even though he was servicable. My evaluation skills do not inspire awe in Dove Valley- with reason. But as a fan, I should be able to say that I like/ don’t like a move without being sneered at with a Hitler reference (or other assorted tired attempt to “win”). As we all should………

Great job Maxwell...one thing unique about MHR

is that the community has done such an excellent job policing itself. Maintaining that “respectful conversation” tone throughout my 2.5 year tenure here.

John has had to intervene very little in the community to maintain this, which is also surprising – considering how every other website has devolved into.

I think that all of us realize that we found something special in MHR and we all work hard to keep it in perfect balance. Sometimes a thread or two bring imbalance for a time, but generally, the majority faction of the community brings things back into balance through intelligent and thoughtful posts like this one.

Very much rec’d.

I agree Tim,

In the two posts that mwd mentioned above i think they, through depth of conversation, have come to this balance that mwd is talking about.

Sure some guys might be more stubborn than others but they are at least entering the debate.. not just blindly arguing their point again and again without even listening to other peoples counter arguments. The key as i understand it is being willing to listen, because there is no way one person can understand everything in this world so other peoples opinions can help you change, expand or confirm your own opinion.

Oh and MHR is teh awesome!

I'm going to call him McFGs if I feel like it.

I’ll continue to call McD McFGs until he learns to call plays that result in TDs in the red zone not Moreno up the middle for minus -2 on 3rd and goal.

With a lot of predictable and angry coaching, McFGs earned that name in 2009.

Steve - I was happy to be the 12th person to rec that comment

I think that your covered it incredibly well. Can I offer one other option?

Take it off the site. Talk to each other through email. I’ve done this for quite a while, and there have been very few people who haven’t found a middle ground to at least talk to each other and communicate. There’s always a risk, but by taking it, you’re also putting yourself out there as trying to be a problem solver, rather than committing to continuing the problem. Kentuckybronco and bradley, among many others, decided to take a disagreement to email and found that they actually agreed on almost everything. That’s not an uncommon outcome, although I wanted to commend both of them for their willingness to communicate, listen and appreciate other views. if you do go to email, remember that the person you’re communicating with is reaching out to you, and be respectful in doing the same. It works a lot of the time.

It’s really difficult to draw a line in the sand and say “you are negative and you are positive”, because it can vary depending on the issue, at hand. However, regardless of where a person finds themselves on a particular issue, it is important to be respectful of an opinion different from your own, even if it is completely wrong. It's not chaos. Just letting AWAL know that I don't really care what he thinks about my profile picture.

The point of this post was to tighten the community up a bit, not help you make it worse.

You've got the date wrong.

If you’re right it’s 2012. When his contract expires.

Not really.

Great post, totally agree.

I think everyone took my Cutlerism post as an attack on the haters, when it was really an attack on spouting ignorant/arrogant dribble and not directed at any ONE person or group of people. I just hate when people spout negative crap that leads nowhere, hence the tone of the post. It was an experiment to see what’s behind it all. Just felt ridiculous and rather annoying.

Good write up!

The biggest problem I see...

is people who perceive themselves in one camp or the other write defensively in order to somehow pre-empt the disagreements they foresee themselves getting from the opposing camp. This in turn makes the opposing campers more likely to post, especially defensively, and it turns into one flame after another.

"Can't we all just get along" Rodney King

maxwellsdemon great post enjoyed reading. I love MHR because I receive current up to day news about our Broncos. From time to time I like to voice my opinions and thoughts and actually am amaze by some of the reactions. I don’t take it personal and don’t mind sharing my views. I’ve been taught that people can look at the same exact picture and see it differently and we should all respect other’s view points.

Couldn't agree more.

I play a round of disc golf every Wednesday with between 5 and 8 other players and have been doing so for almost 10 years. We are a varied group from different walks of life with different political, religious and social backgrounds and we have disagreements. However we all have remained very close friends for all this time and there isn’t anything I wouldn’t do or haven’t done for any of them. Granted, we all love disc golf but to a man we would tell you it is all about getting away from the day to day for a few hours and getting together with each other over something we all love to do. The whole experience has made me a better person. That is how I am starting to feel about MHR. As far as I see it, as long as we are all Bronco fans who want to see them succeed we should be able to "agree to disagree if we have to, but we should also respect each other with the vision to see the common goal we all have. The Lombardi Trophy.

Well written, sir! And wrecked!

Thanks for your hard work. I loved the non-sports quotes and references as well as the light-heartedness sprinkled throughout. Awesome post!

Hopefully your post will have a positive influence on the community. I too felt like the air around MHR had gotten a bit … contentious … of late and thus have kind of stayed away as a result… :(

Hey btw, I’m curious as to your background as fan. Are you a fan of both the Bears and Broncos? I ask b/c I noticed you have a decent amount of knowledge of both teams and I myself have of late pseudo-adopted the Bears as my “1b” team. My wife is a huge Bears fan and they acquired the QB-that-shall-not-be-named-around-here-but-whom-I’m-still-a-big-fan-of. ;)

by tunga77 on May 6, 2010 9:10 AM MDT reply actions

lol most wouldn't admit the Bears thing!!

But it’s ok to have a B team, so long as they’re in a separate conference.

i've been a cowboys fan since Staubach, don't tell anybody.

Check my Cowboys posts though, i don’t go there. Was happy to get Morten, Dorsett, Waters etc (reeves?)…

As I have time for, mostly WCG, MHR, BGN and the Phinsider, but MHR is my #1.

Phinsider is a bit disappointing....

passionate, no doubt, and a great front page, but that community is scary sometimes.

That can be true

Another one that scares me is Dawgs by Nature, but as a whole SBNation runs a pretty awesome ship here.

Great post and points Max.

being able to actually hear all views out before developing a response is a difficult thing to do. But, in the end it does help lead to civilized conversation, which is really what most of us want.

I love my Broncos, right, wrong or indifferent.

Good post. A rare one I agree with here. ;)

The disappointing thing about his site, based on my own last experience and other examples I’ve seen, is that personal attacks on the so-called “haters” are not policed. If an all-out flame war comes out of one of these personal attacks, policing may follow. However, in general, the mods on this site allow personal attacks on the haters, almost encouraging them. Which is pretty Hitlerian. Even though he was obviously a Raider fan.
