Mr. Bowlen, It Is Time

Today, Patrick Willis signed a 5 year contract worth about 50 million dollars. The contract is worth 29 million in guaranteed money and keeps one of the best, young linebackers in San Francisco. Since being drafted in 2007, He has garnered such awards as: Defensive rookie of the year, the Butkus award, NFL Alumni Linebacker of the year, and a 3 time pro bowl berth. He has a very long, promising career ahead of him.

The biggest news is that he is the first person to sign a long term extension since the 2010 season became uncapped.

Jump, Skip, Hop

Star-divide

Why is this such a big deal? It is a big deal because we have one of the most promising, young pass rushers in the league who is waiting for an extension. You want to know the 2009 salaries for the Broncos? It is sure to shock and disgust you as it shocked and disgusted me.

1. Champ Bailey: $9,001,525

2. D.J. Williams: $8,605,590

3. Andre Goodman: $7,806,240

4. Brian Dawkins: $7,182,210

5. Knowshon Moreno: $5,080,000

The top 4 all deserve the money they are receiving. They are all hard working, effective players. Without these players, our team would be considerably worse. Knowshon isn't deserving of a top 5 salary IMO, but it's understandable since he was # 12 in last years draft. It's the price you pay in the draft.

After the top 5 is where it really gets ugly, shocking, disgusting, and every other word you can think of.

6. Ben Hamilton: $3,890,000

7. Chris Simms: $3,466,500

8. Daniel Graham: $3,400,000

9. Ronald Fields: $3,055,720

10. Renaldo Hill: $3,006,110

That's right. Ben Hamilton and Chris Simms were number 6 and 7 on our team. That is almost unfathomable. Kyle Orton made less then Chris Simms and he is WAY better then Chris Simms.

Other notable player salaries:

15. Alphonso Smith: $2,460,000

16. Brandon Marshall: $2,200,340

17. Ryan Clady: $2,065,850

26. Kyle Orton: $1,095,000

27. Chris Kuper: $1,016,370

33. Jarvis Moss: $740,000

38. Elvis Dumervil: $540,980

52. Eddie Royal: $389,810

So a couple of notes. Jarvis Moss made more then Elvis Dumervil did last year. Eddie Royal was the 2nd least paid player on our team. If you want to check out all of the salaries you can look here

The thing that sticks out to me is that Elvis Dumervil was in the lower half of salaries in 2009. Elvis was arguably our best player in 2009. He led the league with 17 sacks. Let's take a look at Dooms stats since coming into the league

Defense Stats
YEAR TEAM G TOT SOLO AST PD SACK FF REC INT YDS TD
2006 DEN 13 17 14 3 1 8.5 1 0 0 0 0
2007 DEN 16 39 34 5 4 12.5 4 0 1 27 0
2008 DEN 16 24 17 7 0 5.0 1 0 0 0 0
2009 DEN 16 49 42 7 3 17.0 4 0 0 0 0
Career 61 129 107 22 8 43.0 10 0 1 27 0

The most important thing is that his best year in just about every category was in 2009 with Josh McDaniels. He got 49 tackles, 42 solo tackles, and 7 assisted tackles. The most noteworthy thing was that he was the NFL sack leader with 17 sacks. He also forced 4 fumbles.

Dumvervil is a young, hardworking player with no character concerns. He has done everything that McD has asked him to do. He transitioned into the 3-4 and flourished. He was a real force in the pass rush. Teams were becoming more and more wary of Doom as the season progressed.

At the age of 26, Doom still has a lot of football to play. He gained his first pro bowl berth and first team all-pro selection in the 2009 season. However, other then sacks, Doom's statistics aren't overly impressive. 49 tackles is his career high and that was last year. For a little comparison, Mario Haggan totaled 63 tackles last year. Due to Doom's size, he is not a big factor in run defense (pun not intended).

Regardless of any perceived weaknesses of Doom, it is absolutely imperative for Denver to give Doom an extension. Forget his sacks, forget his tackles, and forget his game all together. Resigning Doom is imperative because it is going to send a message.

Josh McDaniels has made it clear what kind of players he likes. He likes hard working, determined players who care just as much about the team accomplishments as they do for individual accomplishments. Elvis Dumervil fits that mold 100%. He has done anything and everything that the coaches have told him to do. He is a team player and he works hard. He has never been suspended for anything. He is producing well on the field.

So Mr. Bowlen I hope you are listening. You need to open up your check book and sign Elvis Dumervil to a nice, big paycheck. If not for his on field abilities, then to send a message. Show every Bronco that playing by the rules, working hard, and producing on the field will result in getting exactly what they deserve. Show them that hard work pays off.

Show the entire Bronco organization and every future Bronco that you are paying attention to everything that they are doing. You're actions will speak volumes. The odds of you signing Doom to a long term contract were relatively low due to the CBA situation. However, the 49ers were able to sign their best defensive player to a contract extension. If they can do it, then so can you. Mr Bowlen, it is time.

The 30% rule

I don’t understand the 30% rule but it seems to causing some issues.
I don’t know how it impacts doom for example?

I know the 49ers have had to do some serious “working” on the edges of the CBA language to get Willis his money.

You could also argue willis is a more complete player than doom is over the full range of the game.

Controversially I’d also argue that DJ, Champ, Andre and to a certain degree Dawk are all over paid as are just about all rookies from the 1st half of the 1st round.

Doom should get some big $$‘s but i can’t find any logical argument to say he should get more than say 7 million a season.

In fact i can’t really argue that any of the players should get more than that.

by AlleyCat. on May 5, 2010 6:20 AM MDT reply actions

I don't understand the 30% rule either, but it is causing some issues in resigning players

Adam Schefter reported that the 49ers found some sort of a loophole. Willis is definitely a more complete player then Doom. That’s why he got such a nice payday. I think Doom is going to make somewhere in the 4 year, 34 million dollar contract. with 20 million guarenteed, but that is a total guess lol

I think what this post proves is...

how messed up the whole team structure was for the last several years. In the next few, I believe you are going to see some changes in the hierarchy of season payments. Hopefully, more even across the board (relatively speaking).

I am REALLY curious on what the Tebow contract will look like….

I imagine he'll get

similar money to knowshon. Probably 2-3 mm in the first year. Working off of Moreno’s money, and pick.

I have a feeling

that is Bowlen and McD’s #1 agenda this off season. They will pay doom and they will pay him well. (Stats) Mario Williams career sacks: 39.5. Dooms career sacks: 43. (off-field) Unlike Brandon Marshall escalating the fight leading to D-Will’s murder, Elvis was smart enough to tape a conversation leading to Clark’s conviction. He even seemed to stand up for Brandon on the witness stand trying not to shed a bad light on his teammate. He is a Bronco and he will stay one for years to come. I have no doubt about it.

and also

is the knowshon money artificially high?
Didn’t clady get picked at about the same spot? If so i assume that discrepancy would potentially adjust quite a lot this year?

The rooks will include signing bonus money

2nd year players are the cheapest is you are looking at nothing but base salary. Since they’ve already been paid their money up front, you will just see the base (like Eddie’s)

Those 1st round picks are just killer with their crazy salaries. No way Bowlen wanted to pay for 2 1st round picks in both 2009 and 2010. That is why the Phonz trade made so much sense.

Funny how that arguement falls apart when you look at the facts. Mid to late 1st round picks have very reasonable salaries for the type of talent you can draft there if your scouts are any good.

Clady will be an incredible bargain for Denver over the next few seasons.

Apparently this was the awesome, pre-injury Alphonso Smith.

by McGeorge on May 5, 2010 8:02 AM MDT up reply actions

That is just Ayers base salary

his 9.7 guaranteed makes it more like 3.5 million per year. Not crazy high but still top 10 on the team.

Neither Bowlen or McDaniels have ever hinted that the trade for Smith was done to save money.

And considering the Broncos DID draft 2 players in the first round again this year the evidence backs them up.

The new CBA...

I am a huge advocate of a Rookie Salary Cap to be included in the new CBA…Un-proven rookies making huge sums of money (many of which never end up making an impact on the game) have seriously restricted the owners from being able to properly reward proven and successful young vetrans…

I agree with your post and I am hopeful that Mr. B will get Doom his contract soon but the looming issues involving the CBA, and specificly it’s effect on Mr. B and the Broncos from a business perspective, may prevent immediate resolution.

That probably includes the Broncos, sadly. Doom will get a nice paycheck, but it may not be until the new CBA is signed.

While I'm generally on your side here

In all honesty Doom is no Willis. WIllis has been off the charts every year since drafted and barring injury might go down as one of the best MLB to ever play the game. (Ive watched him a lot as he’s my fav non Bronco) Maybe I’d just like to see Doom perform well another year to prove it was no fluke. If you look at his sack distribution, he got a lot of them early on, and when teams figured him out he was slightly less effective. I love him don’t get me wrong, I just think he needs to do it again to warrant that kind of money. And yes I do expect to get bashed for this position I’ve taken lol.

I can't say I'm shocked or disgusted...

I haven’t felt that way since JC threw his epic and extended fit.

I agree, though, on one point. Elvis Dumervile excudes the characteristics McD preaches— great motor, productive, team guy, on field leader (by example, at the very least) and presumably a great locker room presence. I figured he’d get his extension by now. But at the same time, Willis is the exception rather than the rule in this labor environment, and I think the delay on Doom is purely business.

Plus, doesn’t his tender put him at right around 8 on the list? Not good enough for his production in a normal year, but this isn’t a normal year.

Doom is definitely taking a raise this year, but still not the raise he should get

if we don’t sign him this year then when free agency rolls around in 2011, he is going to bounce and head over to Miami and reunite with Nolan for big time money.

i don't know

not signing doom to a new current-structure deal is risky, at best. he is the only player not to sign his tender, and has not been in dove valley. mcd says he is ok with that, but i’m not sure that doom is, or will sign his tender soon. if he has to play at his tender, i think he may be gone next season when he can walk(currently). we could franchise him, but then he’s getting paid top $, so what’s the point? don’t know what the holdup is, but i’m actually concerned. i don’t believe he’s getting his deal this season, are there even any talks going on? he may be expected to sign and play, or sit. that would not be a wise stance to take. let’s hope something gets done now that the draft is over.

as far as the top 5, i only have a problem with d.j. at his salary. i like the player, he’s been moved around, but i think we could do better. i just don’t consider him an elite ilb. just me, maybe. champ can stay as long as he likes, in my opinion. i do not agree with the popular “trade champ now” view in the least, value be damned. special player, even now. dawkins and goodman made more than i thought, but both played very well last season, and i’m glad to have them. i just would hope goodman tackles better. there sure is a lot of youth in the secondary now to push all of them, and eventually they all will be replaced. they’re really going to have to earn it with this group, though.

overachieving young players will always be underpaid, and proven veterans overpaid, no matter the cba. i don’t know how you legislate that with multi-year contracts, but a rookie cap is definitely in order. the top 10 picks alone are ridiculously overpaid before they even hit the field. willis’ contract calls for 2 signing bonuses. this needs to be addressed in the new cba also, as cash contracts can’t be the answer to franchises that are supposedly not making enough money. either way, i just can’t imagine no football in 2011, so something will get done, sometime. right?

by davecheffy on May 5, 2010 9:33 AM MDT reply actions

I really hope that they figure it out

Doom needs to stay a bronco, despite his struggles against the run, he is a VERY valuable pass rusher. He needs to be paid like the top 10 player he is on our roster. D.J. definitely is getting paid well, but I’m not sure he deserves THAT much.

Trading Champ is not a good move at all. He is a special player and still has games to play. He is still hanging with the best of the receivers. I personally think, he will walk next off season. I hope he doesn’t, but I see him going to a winning tream.

Rookie Cap is definitely needed. top 10 picks don’t deserve to be paid that much when hard working veterans aren’t even paid that much.

Mark My Words. Football will not have a lockout. The players and owners all want their money. They will no way let there be a lockout. They will either agree to play another year while working on negotiations or one side will cave in. But there won’t be a lockout. It’s not going to happen. The NFL is way too good of a money making business to have there be a lockout.

2010 is an uncapped year, but

Considering there will likely be a cap in the future, of roughly $115M to $125M (unknown until a new CBA is in place), the team is currently operating at $101,658,735 total. This says to me, wait until you see what free agency brings, then worry about renegotiating contracts. From a business perspective, why would you pay more for something than you have to?

(I also can’t remember how much remains in dead weight payments to players who we still pay to not play for us… like Tatum Bell and Travis Henry for example).

But personally, I agree with the idea that signing Doom to a new deal would send the right message, as long as everyone doesn’t want a new deal as well…

From what I’ve read/heard the owners don’t really want one. But I could be mistaken.

if he was such a great game changing prospect why did no other team make any attempt to sign him. Sure it would have been a first and a third, but a guy who racks up 17 sacks is worth it right? If that was the case why did it not happen?

Calm down

Actual salary is an irrelevant number. Contracts have so many bonus and incentive clauses the the actual salary players make is an almost mythical number.

Dooms 1st+3rd tender equates to a little of $2.5 million per year. Probably less than he would like, but not unreasonable.

by SlowWhiteGuy on May 5, 2010 11:13 AM MDT reply actions

total contracts are relevant

if you want to assuage the effect of looking at the top salaries. Also, it should be noted that no salary data we have is 100% accurate, since it isn’t ever “officially” released. But it is usually close enough, I’m just pointing out that you wnat to double and triple check your sources.

In the examples of the top 5 up above, they all make considerably less in 2010 then the figures you have up there.

Overall though, I like the point of the post. If Orton plays well, we may be in a pickle deciding who to use the Franchise tag on…

If Orton plays well is irrelevant IMO. I don’t see us signing him to starter money when he is not the future of the franchise. With Harris, Champ, Ronald Fields, Wesley Woodyard, and all the rest of the free agents. I don’t see us franchising a QB who is not our future, but maybe that is just me.

Ok, maybe not average-wise, since there are a ton of non-stars, but the elite pass-rushing ends get some of the HUGEST contracts… Elvis is… turning elite on us, and I like it.

I think it gets done first before signing draft picks.

that would be nice.

I think it would send a good message going into the season.

How have the Patriots handled situations like this?

With this whole “team first” mentality that is being installed, do the Broncos now expect players to take less money? I don’t remember hearing much about big money contracts being signed in New England, except maybe “the great” Tom Brady, but didn’t he even opt to take less money in his last contract? Would it set a bad precedent in Denver if we start throwing big money contracts around just because the rest of the league does?

Love how the Denver Post put out an article about this just today

MSM shows their lack of teeth…can’t even come up with their own material.

Nothing new I guess.

Don't want to be ungenerous,

but I do believe that Doom’s stats were inflated a bit last year by playing against Jamarcus Russel. What was it, 4 sacks in one game? Doom is a great player who I want to have on our team for a long time, but if he hadn’t played against J Russ, he might not have been the NFL sack leader last year.

that's a fair point

It still takes skill to get to the QB, but I definitely see where you are coming from. I think McD wants to make sure Doom keeps up his production before they give him a big, fat contract.
