Denver Broncos Sign OL Maurice Williams
The Denver Broncos have announced the signing of offensive tackle Maurice Williams. Williams, 31, has spent the first nine years of his career with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and was a second round selection out of Michigan in 2001.
Williams started 100 of the 105 games he has played in in the NFL so far. The 6'5" 302 pound lineman has experience primarily at right tackle and right guard, and will give the Broncos an extra body while Ryan Clady is out for the summer with a torn patellar tendon.

That is good news in terms of depth
bad news in terms of confidence in Clady’s recovery.

I'm thinking both
He wants depth and Clady insurance… I have a feeling Clady is headed for the PUP list

Doesn’t hurt that we are playing Jacksonville this season. On a side note, maybe Denver will wait until after the Jacksonville game to trade Brady Quinn to them.

funny side note --
it could hold some merit, though, if Quinn turns out to be a short term posture and less of a long term guy.

Great news in terms of Clady healing completely.
I don’t want him rushed onto the field. Much rather go without for the first few than have him re-injure himself or slow his recovery.

Not really
Who knows if he will make a full recovery or not, but this gives the Broncos an experienced NFL starter to take his spot this offseason, potentially for the first couple games if we need him. If we were legitimately worried about Clady’s recovery, we’d have probably made a play for the younger OT’s on the market.

Was he released over the weekend, picked up by the Lions on Tuesday and released again today? What was that all about?
Released by the Jags,
claimed by the Lions, failed the Lions physical. This all happened last December. Apparently his physical issues have cleared up if the Broncos have signed him.

Williams, who was a second-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2001 draft (43rd overall), made starts at right tackle, left tackle and right guard in his nine years with the team.
He was waived by the Jaguars this past December after losing his starting job, just two seasons removed from a mult-year contract extension. He missed the ’08 season after injuring his biceps in pre-game warmups before the season opener against Tennessee that year.
He also missed 11 games in ’02 with a fractured leg, but did start 16 games in five seasons as well.
Williams turned 31 this past January and having started 100 games in his career — he’s played in 105 overall — has been through plenty of physical battles. Williams worked out with the Detroit Lions earlier this year, but was not signed because, at least in part, of some concerns over his ability to make it through training camp and into the regular season.
At 6-foot-5, 302 pounds Williams does have size Broncos coach Josh McDaniels wants on his offensive front. And his ability to play multiple positions is one of McDaniels’ criteria as well.

This may only be some veteran help amongst all of our youngsters... Doesn't necessarily say anything to the future of Clady/Harris
Nice pick up.

He’s exactly two minutes thirty seconds behind in his recovery. ; )

Nah! with everybody saying
Tebow will be the starter then Harris will stay at RT to cover Tebows blind side.
Weird
The bio I read said he has started most of his career at LT, and played RG. I will make an update

His experience being at RT and RG with only 2 games at LT complicates it a little...
However, if he is an upgrade over the other guys that we have, that is a plus. Our depth on the OL, IMO, was still not good even with the recent additions.
Williams adddition is good news.
Depth
is always appreciated by me. If Ryan Clady isn’t all right at all in 2010, we know that Williams can do the job. Hopefully, he’ll be a major impetus in us beating his ex-teammates in Week 1!

Just to know
He played OK in the first part of last year for us.
Bad news: when he was cut in the second half of the ’09 season; he went to the Lions; but he cannot pass the medical test there…

what's his medical issue?
or why was he cut(better youth?) can he perform as a stop-gap for 4 games or so? that’s pretty much all we’ll need-hopefully, that is
taste my blitzkrieg!
sign doom now
Torn patella is more than 4 games
And I’m not sure one of the youngsters will step up that quickly. Then again, Clady did. Williams has some run-game chops so I’m hoping for the best.
Still bummed about the pickup game knee injury though. I know guys have to do something to stay in shape but pickup games seem to put more than their fair share on the IR

4 games?
Clady is out 3-4 months. That’s about mid August for a return, give or take a few weeks. I’m glad for the vet backup, but still hopeful for Clady. Torn patella can be more or less severe – we don’t know much yet. If anyone has any specific or inside info, please let me know.
Gnothi Seauton
There's info just read between the lines
The Broncos IMO brought this guy in to compete at OT, considering he came from a power scheme, has played both OT positions, and only weighs 302lbs. The Broncos drafted interior OL, and I doubt they would get this 10 year vet to start or even backup one of the rookies at OG. He was mostly likely brought in to play OT or be the backup OT/OG on gameday.
So yea it doesnt look good for Clady especially considering the injury.
Yeah
He waas cut; because we had 2 rookie tackles and our GM Gene Smith wanted more play for them.
He can be easily a stop-gap guy for 3-4 games a tackle- IF he is 100% Healthy!

As I wrote
We had 2 rookie tackles last year; and he (and Tra Thomas) got less and less playtoime; plus Mo was injured in the end.

Harris to LT
Williams to RT, Clady to heal. When Clady is ready then move WIlliams to RG unless Zane is ready and Harris back to RT. Big power Oline with options depending on how the rookies develop with one of the options being time. Polumbus to the unemployment line, maybe Hoch too. My real question is Fry to start?

I was impressed by the job done by the inside guys for the Jags, including Maurice Williams, Brad Meester, and Vince Manuwai. They opened a lot of holes for Maurice Jones-Drew and anchored very well in the passing game.

Williams is a versatile lineman who can line up at either guard or tackle and has started at both positions for the Jaguars. While he is above average in a lot of areas he really does not stand out in any one. He played in and started the first game of 2008 but he missed the rest of the season after being placed on injured reserve when he tore a biceps. He is a good athlete with long arms and has above average initial quickness and is a good knee bender which allows him to leverage his blocks and do more than just hold his own. He has adequate lateral range, in pass protection, but can struggle when out on the island so he looks more comfortable when playing inside at guard. He is quick to the second level but tends to let his base get narrow and will lunge at opponents at times. He has improved his hand use and can punch with some power but is inconsistent when it comes to keeping his hands in good position. While he is good enough to start for most teams he could improve his play with added off season work.
Scouting Report from ESPN prior to last season.
Soo if Clady and Harris are both healthy...
do you guys think this guy start at gaurd for us opposite Kuper??? Or is he just depth at tackle?
Depends
The play of Beadles/Olsen/Olsen could factor into that. Either way, there will probably be a nice player starting at LG for us.

Great flexibility and strong RT experience too
Whats not to like here.
Adding a stable of capable veterans who have proven that they can play at this level mixed with a lot a physically talented rookies. Not only that it seems almost everyone added recently can play multiple positions. That has to help.
If you are adding them into games in rotation or you have depth for injuries to sustain a long season with capable backups that are not significant drop offs in size speed and talent , that seems to be a pretty darn rationale strategy.
I must say, I like the significant emphasis and execution this off season on getting bigger more talented beef in the trenches on both sides of the ball in the OL and DL improvements.
(cross posted here, better in this thread)

Versatile
Big
Experienced
I think a lot of you guys are reading too much into this on your speculations on Clady’s injury. Maurice here became available and he fits the mold of a capable backup and I would imagine its never a bad thing to have depth on the offensive line. Just watching some of the Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers experience last year, I bet they wished they had more depth on their roster on the OL. Not to mention our OL issues.
I like it from a depth perspective, especially since he can play multiple positions. Its not like he was a dedicated LT for his entire career of something.
