Mel Kiper Overrated?

With all the news of Jamarcus finally being released by the Raiders, and potentially going down as one of the worst quaterbacks in NFL history. I thought I wonder what Mel Kiper thought of Jamarcus when he was coming into the draft. I'm personally not a fan of Mel's, and after watching his love over Jimmy Clausen in this years draft, and being pretty negative on the Broncos for grabbing Tebow where they did, I was interested in seeing what his opinions were on a recent first round bust, and if he truly did understand the Quarterback position.

This is what Mel Kiper had to say,

“Jamarcus Russell’s gonna immediately energize that Raider Nation, that fanbase, that football team- on the practice field, in that locker room- three years from now you could be looking at a guy that’s certainly one of the elite top five quarterbacks in this league.

You’re talking about a 2-3 year period once he’s under center. Look out because skill level that he has is certainly John Elway like.”

It's one thing to say that a quarterback will be great in the NFL but to make the comparison to John Elway in skill set is a little out there. Does the guy have a big arm Yes. Does he have Elways accuracy No. Can he read a defense like Elway NO. Does he work as hard as Elway did NO. Does he inspire his teamates like Elway NO. Was he the first person at practice and the last person to leave NO. Does he have Elways mobility NO. After reading this it really brought into light just how much weight I should give to Mel's draft opinions. He was right about one thing it did take a 2-3 year period for Al Davis to find out just what he had in this energizing player.

This is just my opinion thought it was interesting, let me know what you think!
