McDaniels, Tebow and the 'It' Factor
via d.yimg.com
I was chatting with anothe member this afternoon, and he mentioned his discomfort with the article in today's Denver Post on the 'It' factor. He brought up a few very legitimate concerns, too. I understand his feelings. I agree with much of it, too. I'll tell you the good side that I see, though, for whatever it's worth. Please bear with me - it covers a few different areas, but there is a point to the journey, I promise.
As you might know, in my former life, I was a physician. One of the things that I learned was physio-postural analysis - how to see what was 'wrong' with the human form, posture and gait; to be able to break it down and analyze it in a way that leads to a better diagnosis and treatment. Many of my patients had conditions that were created or exacerbated by the way that they stood, moved and carried their weight. For example, I saw quite a few cases of what's called 'thoracic outlet syndrome', or just TOS. TOS is a nasty problem. It's a pinching of the nerves that come out of the neck (mostly the brachial plexus, which emerges from the openings of the 4th through the 7th vertebrae of the neck), down the shoulder, through the hole or 'outlet', down into the upper thorax of the body and from there out into the 4 main nerves of the arm. when this pinching occurs, the arm usually goes numb. In bad cases, the patient begins to lose use of the hand and/or the arm. The only western treatments at that time were PT and a choice of two surgeries, both of which are excruciating and neither of which works more than about 50 percent of the time. One was the removal of the 1st rib and the other a removal of part of one muscle in the neck - the splenius capitus, so the procedure is called a partial splenectomy, although it has nothing to do with the organ called the spleen. Removing that part of the muscle created, in theory, more room for the nerves. We had a perfect record on curing those patients if we got them pre-surgery. Why? Because I could do the postural analysis that told me why they had the problem and I had developed the techniques to fix it. I'm not smarter than other docs - I just had training that let me view from a different perspective.
When McD watched Tebow, from the very start of this draft, what he saw was a player with a problem that most everyone else saw as difficult or impossible to fix. That was why we heard so often about the mechanics issue (some people called it a 'release' problem - that was totally inaccurate. His release points were fine - it was the postural problem that ramified into weakening his throws, causing some to float, the long windup, etc. As McD watched and listened, he realized that he knew from watching exactly what was wrong, and those around him just plain didn't. he was hearing lots of negative comments that in his own mind were failing to see what the problem was and how to fix it. The longer he watched and listened, the more he became convinced that he had found a QB whose 'problems' were easily overcome. It came down to one simple thing - Josh McDaniels really does know more about the QB position and how it is played than most of the league. At this point, I think that this is fact, rather than conjecture. Some will hold their decision until they see how well Tebow does at the NFL level, and I think that's perfectly logical too. But, consider this:
There has never been any argument about Tebows 'intangibles', most of which are quit tangible. You often really do know when a guy is a leader, a winner, and when one is not. There are lots of leadership styles, but among NFL QBs, one factor that seems consistent in the best of them is that they know, from their toenails to their hair follicles, that they are winners and leaders and nothing that anyone ever does will change that. Some just have it inside - some seem to radiate it. Either way, you feel it when you talk to them or listen to them. I went through a similar experience some years ago - about a dozen years ago, it was.
Finding the It Factor
Just over 12 years ago, I watched the Michigan football games a lot. A number of my friends had gone there, and we watched the QB struggle that Tom Brady went through. Brady was caught in what should never be part of college football - a political situation. There was a lot of pressure on the AD and therefore the coach to play a certain QB. He wasn't in Brady's class, really, but at the time, that wasn't as clear as it is now. Brady has improved a lot of his weaknesses. Even so....At one point, under pressure from the alumni, the coach was putting in Brady and the other QB each for a quarter, and letting the one who had the best quarter start the second half. At times, the coach would pull whoever started the second half and put in the other QB for the 4th quarter. It was insane. And, it often ended in Brady coming in to try to salvage the game, which he frequently did.
via kellylowenstein.files.wordpress.com
During that time, I caught an interview with Brady. It was short, but it was also obvious to me that he was one of those kinds of people who don't have any doubt about themselves or their purpose. He was sure that he was the best QB, sure that he was a winner, knew he was a good leader and nothing - not even the bizarre mechanistic doings of the coach, et al, was ever going to stand in his way. To most scouts, he was the guy who couldn't even beat out so-and-so. Then he was injured for Combine and couldn't perform. He fell to the 6th round.
But when New England took him, it was obvious from the start that he was different. Belichick didn't know how far it would go, but he knew that he had something rare. Then they had to cut a new key, because Brady kept working and training, arriving before the janitors and often leaving after they had closed down. In this respect, Denver has at least two player who are similar in their approach. Kyle Orton has always been first to arrive and last to leave. You can like him or hate his work, but you can't dis his work ethic. And to be fair, Tim Tebow seems to be exactly the same. I haven't heard that much on Quinn and Brandstater, but I doubt that they are far behind. All of them know what the stakes are.
Did I expect Tom Brady to be a Hall of Famer, based on what I saw? Not at all, but in retrospect, I'm not surprised. Did I expect that if he was given a shot, that he would be very successful? Yes, I did. He had that air. He also was a very good player - far better than the man he was in competition against - and I got to enjoy watching him quite a bit. The strange issues around the coaching and the pressure from the AD and the alumni is a matter of record, by the way, if anyone cares enough to check it. It's a strange story. This tale is also told briefly in the book Moving the Chains: Tom Brady and the Pursuit of Everything which was written by Charles P. Pierce. It's a pretty good read, by the way.
What McDaniels sees in Tebow
Right or wrong, what McD sees in Tebow is that same kind of air that Brady has. He also sees that with the proper coaching, which Josh believe he can provide, he has reason to believe that Tebow can be as successful at the NFL level as he was in college. I can see how he may well be right. The NFL game is very different from the college game, but there are big overlaps, too. Tebow is learning the NF game at a rapid pace, and it's becoming clear that McD's perception of the problem and his solutions to it have been precise and correct. That's huge. If Tebow had the kind of motion last year that he does today, he would not have lasted into the later 1st round. Denver would have been in a fight to obtain him.
I understand the issues that McDaniels making these statements in May will create, and I also worry about the effect of this on the team. It's not what I would have wanted, but I have to admit - I also understand. Just like those patients of mine who were looking down the barrel of a very large healthcare gun - painful surgeries with uncertain outlooks but who really weren't that hard to cure - Tebow was a great unknown to most coaches and a clear issue with a clear 'cure' for McDaniels.
What we're seeing here is just how good Josh McDaniels is at analyzing the movements that make up the QB position in the NFL. No other coach really understood that the problem was based in the compensatory motions of the right side and arm. It's that simple. It says a lot about McDaniels, things that those who dislike him may have trouble rectifying with their prior position on the subject. Time will tell.
Given McD's clarity on this issue, I don't blame him for being excited. He has found a player who learns almost immediately, who carries the air that some of the best winners carry, and who can be coached to his highest possible level by McDaniels himself. Josh is excited for Tebow, excited for the team, and most certainly has a little ego (perhaps, to be accurate, more than a little ego) about the fact that he was the one who saw what others didn't, and has obtained a player who may well be, for McD, what Brady was for Belichick. I'm NOT suggesting that Tebow will be that successful, but I also wouldn't put that possibility aside too quickly. McDaniels does have that kind of skill at coaching QBs. Like Orton, Tebow loves to be coached. Player who love to learn excite McD. To find that kind of skill, the 'intangibles' and to be able to obtain him because of a problem that others missed and he could fix quickly has to be exciting him beyond his normal boundaries. I can understand why he's making the statements that he is.
I'm not ready to proclaim Tebow the starter for this year, but if it happens, I won't be surprised. Regardless of how it affects the other QBs, McDaniels is also getting the other players ready for the fact that they are going to have a new QB soon, and that McDaniels himself considers the guy to be a winner who will lead the team to lots of victories. He wants the rest of the team to be a as excited as he himself is, and as Tebow has to be. Tebow, no matter how anyone felt before this was made public, has to be in heaven over this situation, if you'll pardon th phrase. He's found a coach who can fix the problem that was creating all the controversy, who believes in Tebow as much as Tebow believes in himself, and it's pretty much a perfect situation for the two of them. McD wants the team to see that, to understand it, and if Tebow is as successful in training camp as McDaniels expects, yes, he could start this year. Until the issue of his mechanical problems and their solution was made public, I wouldn't have been at all comfortable with this possibility, but given the facts as they are unfolding, I'm getting increasingly comfortable with the option. I'm not ready to claim that he's going to be ready to start this year, but if not, it won't be that long.
I feel bad for Orton. Another year of McD training would have put him on a much higher course, professionally. I hope that Denver can keep him as a backup, but I suspect that there are a few teams for whom Orton would be a much better option than the man they are playing with. Quinn is, to me, an enigma. He has done nothing professionally but play badly. He was, I fully agree, a heck of a QB in college, but so far, he's been nothing but a loser as a pro. Can McD work that same magic on him? I have no idea. Orton was learning quickly, but he's a quieter leader - very popular with the players, but not loud or arrogant. At the same time, Tebow's kind of leadership may be popular quickly as well. Tom Brandstater? Lots of teams keep a player like him - lots of potential, inexpensive, might be a good third option. and, again - McD may be able to fix the physical mechanics and footwork. He may turn into a valuable player - as third QB, 2nd backup, or as trade bait. Brandstater is, for the Broncos, a no-lose situation right now.
At this point, I suspect that there is any doubt of how this will play out. I'm trying to get used to it. Any way you look at it, right now we have nothing but reports from the coach. They often are made for some effect, and you have to take all with that grain of salt. This is the coach who was praising Chris Simms on his work ethic and progress the day before releasing him from the team. Not all is probably as it seems. However - one thing is obvious.
Josh McDaniels thinks that he's found his QB. He's going to work that fellow as hard as he can, and Tebow is the type who will welcome that kind of demand. They are entwined. I don't claim that McDaniels career is lined to Tebow's - injuries happen, things go sideways, and anything can still happen. Brady Quinn might really be developing as we've been told. Orton is still the starter going into camp, and anyone who thinks that Orton will give up the starting job easily just doesn't know the man. Brandstater is an afterthought, mostly through a total lack of info on him, which may be a statement in itself. Time, and camp, will tell.
But as a fan, I am happy for McDaniels in this. If half of what he's telling the media is accurate, and I think that in this case it's likely, McDaniels has done something that is fairly rare and extremely positive. All of his work, throughout his life, has been aimed at becoming the head coach of a professional football team. He's worked toward it. He's sweated, he bled, he studied and he picked the brains of some of the best mind in football, college and pro. He seems a likable guy, in a profession that tends to be very insular. Coaches tend to spend time with other coaches. They talk football, they argue and agree, they trade information on plays, schemes, and palyer. somehow, McDaniels has learned about the QB position. He's learned to break down mechanics. some people just have that knack - I taught Oriental Medicine to a doc who also had studied applied kinesiology, and he was able to show me Western ways of analyzing the body that were remarkable. McDaniels, somehow along the line, understood much the same thing that I had to study. Some people just are naturally good at it - others work very hard. My own belief is that both are part of this outcome, but that's just one opinion.
Even so - Denver fans should be congratulating McDaniels on his level of understanding of the mechanics of that position. They might also recognize that this was the guy who claimed that Tebow's problem was jut the 'he dipped it a bit". Like all coaches, he knows when to lie with a straight face to influence the outcome he wanted to produce. Because he didn't let on, Tebow was available late in the 1st - a value pick, really - and McDaniels' knowledge led to a dedicated young man overcoming a problem that had many teams and pundits writing him off as a bad investment. Not one observer saw what was really happening, except a coach who many still claim to be too young, too arrogant and too inept to be in the job he holds. That's worth thinking about.
It should give those who still are sure that he's going to be a disaster for the Broncos a little pause. Apparently, this guy really does know some things. He even knows some that a lot of other coaches missed on. Will Tebow go on to Brady-like success? I'm not there yet - frankly, not by a long shot. There's too much work to do, and as anyone who's been around for some decades knows, a lot can go wrong that we never really think about in advance. But let's give a little credit where it is due - If he's as successful with Tebow as is being reported, he's done something very rare. He's proved that he really is as knowledgeable as his reputation when it comes to QBs and mechanics.
It has also shown that he can manipulate the draft to his liking - even with the medical concerns, D. Thomas was rightfully the first pick in the draft for Denver. His ability to stretch the field vertically will be a delight for fans and QBs alike. Like many, I get flashes of Eddie Mac when I watch film of Decker. The linemen? They will have to prove themselves, but I like what I see so far - men who have played a lot of games and can cover multiple positions. I loved heading Beadles commenting on how it's better to learn the entire playbook of all line positions, so that you'll always know what everyone else is doing. Perrish Cox may turn out to be a diamond in the rough - we got him at a very good value. I'm already a fan of Jammie Kirlew, and I look forward to seeing if young Syd'Quan Thompson can return the way he did in college. It was a good draft.
And I loved this from our second round pick:
Having such a large group -- no pun intended -- of newcomers to the Broncos offensive line will help the transition for each player, according to Beadles.
"All offensive lineman are the same -- we always get along, no matter where we're at," said the second-round pick. "To be able to come in with these guys and build some camaraderie and work together and learn together (is great). Learning together is a huge thing. It's just better bouncing things off multiple guys and that's a definite advantage for us."
It's time. The old ways left with the players who couldn't get on board. Those who didn't have the right attitude are out, and they were even set up with new teams that fit their own desires, which was a classy thing for Denver to do. The new are in, and what I'm hearing is the quiet buzz of the beginnings of a new way of doing things. OTAs will start shortly. Does anyone not remember that Ryan McBean was the starting LDE in the first OTA, and many, myself incuded, thought that it was just an OTA, and things would change. He stayed at starter through training camp and most all of the 2009 season. Keep a close eye on the OTAs. Many things will be revealed that will tell us where this team is going. And while this can be a dry time for new information, it's going to be a great time to get acquainted with all of our new players. With the writers on this site, we'll be meeting someone new several times a week.
Personally, I can't wait. Go Broncos!

Well said, doc!
I hope this all works. I’m sick of .500 ball and no playoffs for the last five years. We need winners again.

Absolutely, mdierk!
I would bet the farm that making .500 last year is sticking in McD’s craw. He’s doing a lot to change that, and with Chris Baker coming on at NT, learning from the Man Mountain himself in J. Williams, Branson coming on as a TE/WR, Ayers progress and the kind of talent that we’ve brought in on FAs and the draft, as well as some darned interesting UDFAs, I’m hopeful for at least a wild card berth. Time will tell – and will tell if Harris and Clady will make it back. We’ve got a lot of talent – now it needs to come together!

How about only 1 playoff in the past 11 years
Can’t wait either – things are looking up.

Great Work!
I never knew the back story behind Tom Brady getting jerked around on playing time at Michigan. Interesting stuff. I agree with McDaniels. Tebow is a winner, and winners win.
All work and no play makes Homer something something.
Winner do win
I first heard that from John, and I think that it’s far more important than most fans expect. When your player expect to win, know what it takes to win and want it badly, your team gets more tough to play every week. The last of the complainers are gone – now to some playoff football!

yep everything's fine now, brilliant draft, we're set a qb for years to come and McD is vindicated!!
Or we could wait and see what happens on the field?

Doc, can you remind us...
Was Brady getting swapped in and out for Drew Henson or Brian Griese? Weren’t all 3 of them at Michigan at the same time, briefly?

I thought it was Henson the last year....Greise was ahead of him when he entered college....but I could be wrong.

I believe that it was Henson
If I’m right, Griese was there first. Henson had some kind of pull via the alumnus council – I don’t recall all the details, but I did research it a while back to make sure that my memory hadn’t gone south entirely ;-). It hadn’t the whole thing did little but delay Brady’s ascent to starter and lose some game that they could have won. It also dropped him in the draft, but the Pats did make up for the little error with his next contract. Weird stuff, but there you are. Brady overcame it, just like he overcame every other issue. It’s what winners do. Frankly, Orton has also done that, but he doesn’t have that ‘glow’ that some of the best do. I’d be thrilled if we kept him as backup when Tebow starts – let’s be honest, it’s coming. I doubt it though – too many teams need a QB as good as he is.

Thanks.
I watched the SportsCentury special on Brady, where they detailed that part of his career pretty in-depth, but I forgot the details. It seems he was close to transferring at one point, but then the chip on his shoulder came out and he refused to do it. I wonder how much that played into his drive to be the best? Kind of like Tebow saying he loves the doubters, because they fuel him, and he wants to do everything possible to repay the Broncos and McD for their faith in him. It’s VERY hard not to love the kid, isn’t it?

Yes, I think that was it
He wasn’t going to danged well let anyone run him off, and in the end he did succeed. Much like Tebow – it’s a trait that most of the best winners do have.

WOW
Just wow.
Thank you for the write up Doc. You have a knack for not wasting words and keeping a nice clear line of thought. Really enjoyed it. Lots of new info for me as well. I really, really hope you’re right on this one.
Speaking of winning (whining), I can’t believe the last time Culter had a winning season was High School. Maybe Tebow’s history of just plain winning means a lot more than most are allowing…

JC's last winning season; I had let that totally slip out of my consciousness
I wonder if that affects a player after that long; seems like real self-confidence may take a hit, and one might have to “fake it”.
You'd have to believe
that over time, it would certainly lower your expectations. Or maybe you just start blaming the circumstances instead of your own ability…

Love the logic but...
Wouldn’t that make Colt McCoy the great quarterback in the draft ever?
By the way, I hope McCoy rips it up in Cleveland.

Great job Doc...
You know how much I love Kyle Orton, but I just have a feeling its already Tebow time.
I would LOVE for Denver to offer KO a starting QB salary to stay as back up…that would make me so stoked for our team. But I really like Kyle, and he will be a better starter than 2/3 of the NFl, and deserves that chance. If Tebow comes on strong, i hope Kyle gets the chance at somewhere like Arizona or Buffalo, where he can be a good starter and team leader.
Thanks for a great perspective!

Awesome article doc. I love reading your opinions and comments. You have a great way with words.
I love this team that McD is putting together. I am hopeful for many positive things but it is hard to shake the doubt from so many years of mediocrity. I hope we have many reasons to cheer this year especially in a division that is getting tougher.
Have to believe that Orton is our starter
Excellent post. I am also stoked about Tebow (and Quinn from the recent reports). However, with all of the Broncos offensive issues with the line of scrimmage last year, and Kyle’s ankle injury, Kyle still had a very respectable year. I like the guy and the player. However, even with McD’s comments on Tebow, I have to believe that a team with playoff potential starts a QB with proven experience this year. I just don’t see giving the reins to Tebow or Quinn, who are not NFL-proven players (in the win-loss column), whereas Kyle’s win-loss ratio is so compelling. 2011 is a different situation with Kyle’s contract coming due. However it plays out, I love having 3 to 4 quarterbacks with so much potential, led by a coach whose specialty is teaching the QBs.

By the way, I’m in Carlsbad, just down the coast. Always nice to touch base with another expatriate Bronco fan. You make a lot of good points – personally, I’m in the ‘start Orton’ camp, but I’m beginning to wonder if McD isn’t preparing us for Tebow. I agree with you – we’ve got a lot of talent at QB. What a change in one year!

I have to tell you – even coming from a greenbelt at the foothills west of Denver, coming to Carlsbad has been a delight. The town works hard on keeping things green in terms of recycling and such. The world leaders in breeding amaryllis – you see them all over at Xmas – and a flower called ‘ranunculus’ are here, and their fields in spring are astounding. There is also a local strawberry grower, and you’d swear they were dipped in sugar. The weather is great and the people are remarkably friendly – Shelby came down from Malibu and Thousand Oaks, and she’s constantly amazed at how nice people are. I would look forward to seeing you – I know the best brewpub in the area, too.

Great stuff, Doc.
I’m really glad we find ourselves in this situation (having too many potential starting QBs), especially when you look around the league and see teams like Jacksonville and Buffalo, who have maybe one quality starter….. maybe.
Having a head coach who is a QB guru doesn’t hurt, either. I’m really excited to see what level of success these guys can have under the tutelage of McDaniels.
If Taylor Swift were to try and tackle me, I'd let her.

Thanks Doc great post. You’ve validated what I’ve felt for quite sometime how lucky Denver is to have an exceptional coach in McDaniels. I too look forward to the possibility of another QB with the “IT” factor and it’s great to hear Elway giving his endorsment. I do feel for Orton who has without doubt been a great team leader but I feel that Tebow will eventually be the Franchise QB who will leads us to the big party and another Lombardi Trophy.

Doc, I always like your post.
I hear John Elway’s interview and he said about the excitement that he first came to Denver and compared to Tim Tebow. He also said something like him the first son of Denver and Tebow the second. Correct me if I’m wrong.

Here's Elway's comment
“I think there’s a connection already with Tim Tebow and the way he’s acted, come in answered with the media, the type of person he is. He fits perfect into this community,” Elway said. “I think that’s why everyone is excited about him because they kind of feel like you know he’s the next son of Denver. That’s how I felt when I came in.”

Great work as always, Doc.
I was floored when I read the original article. I consider myself pretty knowledgeable about football and some of the fundamentals of the QB position, but I was giddy as could be when I read Coach McD’s explanation of what was going on with Tebow’s right side, and how it was causing some of the problems. That kind of analysis…..well, for a second I was wondering if McD has been reading MHR and MHR U!

Negative Nancy :)
Well, I don’t actually believe the counterpoint that I’m about to make, but it’s always possible that McD believes he knows this stuff, and that he knows something that no one else knows… and that he’s actually wrong. It’s also possible that Tebow is just a big Eddie Haskell talking about how he’s working really hard on the new motion – I saw footage on him from the ESPN documentary special and he had a high throwing motion like we’re seeing now – but at some point he reverted.
So, nothing has been proven yet, but it’ll be awesome if McD ends up right. There’s a great way to finally earn coaching respect from the rest of the league (and the pundits).

You're not negative -
you want to see the evidence with your own eyes, just as WB suggested above. I don’t disagree at all – part of being a head coach is lying when it improves something – anything. The thing is, I think that he’s right. If you find even some highlight film, if you can see the big windup, ignore it and watch the right side. You’ll see the exact thing that McD is saying. As someone who used to get paid to find the same kinds of things, I’m very impressed that McD caught it and no one else did. A guy out here in CA was paid to put together a video of Tebow, and after doing so, he commented that he didn’t think that the guy would ever be a success in the NFL. Obviously, he needs to look more carefully.
What I will wait to see is whether or not Tebow can keep to his motion with a couple of 300 lb angry men bearing down on him. That’s a very different situation, and from a medical view, he’s better off working hard on the new motion for as long as possible before that kind of test. I hope for the best for him.
Gnothi Seauton
To play devils advocate
It’s possible others did see it but were unwilling to move into the first to get him. Maybe they were waiting to steal him later on. Not to mention that apparently there were multiple teams interested in moving up to get him. So maybe these other teams saw what was wrong and thought they could fix it to. Not saying that’s the truth but it’s not out or the realm of possibility.
With regards to McDaniel's comments, I don't see how fanning the flames of the hype can help either Tebow or the team.
Maybe he just couldn’t contain himself but it seems like maybe he should have taken a cue from Bellichek and kept things a little closer to the vest.
I agree
I think I’ve said this before, I like Tebow, like what he could become, but by raising a players expectations, calling him “franchise”, giving his the “it” factor, makes it so much harder for him to succeed. If we as fans set a fair expectation, start in 2011 with 3500-4000 yard and 20+ TD’s, which is pretty achievable, and he meets them, it only build confindence. But if we set false or to high expectations, start as a rookie, play like Elway and Brady, and win, and even if he has a good season, but we finish 8-8 or 9-7, we fans are going to be furious. Having a good season and meeting or beating expectations will be much more benificial to a player then to have high expectations for a great season but only have a good one. Hype can help sometimes, but by putting unneeded pressure on a young quarterback, you may stunt his growth if he fails to meet the hype and struggles to bounce back.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
I agree and hes already taken a shot at Orton to begin with . Everyone forgets that Josh is still a pretty young coach but hes really putting himself into a situation that could go bad very quickly
The leader of our football team defensively is (safety) Brian Dawkins and it will certainly be the quarterback on the offensive side and last year that was Kyle Orton.
As far as i know the players named Orton a captain which means he was a leader on this football team . To address Brian as a current leader and address Orton as if he used to be the leader is just wrong because the last time I checked a week earlier McDaniels was adamant that Orton was the starter so if hes still starter then realistically he shouldve been saying the leader on defense was Brian and the leader on offense was Kyle.
But in its entirety Orton right now is the QB so he has said which would make Orton the leader as I said before if people dont think this was caught by Ortons agent and the players as well you are kidding yourself .
This is gonna end badly because hes not gonna shut up and let it play or at least manipulate it behind the scenes in silence .

Yes, I’m from a rival team and think that 4 draft picks for Tebow is absurd. But, I also want to learn more about this because I want to understand whether this guy is going to become the starter and be good.
New body. Same soul.
If you want to read about "this so-called fix"
try here. Here’s the relevant material:
The problem with his delivery, McDaniels said, was not as much the left arm action as the right side body reaction. Tebow’s nonthrowing arm was flailing, and his right side was bailing out. He’s corrected the throwing motion and cocked position, is releasing the ball quicker, and has eliminated the inaccurate sidearm passes. McDaniels had Tebow tuck his right elbow, straighten his shoulders and concentrate on forcing the “15” (on his jersey front) to fall off (figuratively) when he throws.

Great article Doc. As always a pleasure to read... An Observation
if you will…
At the beginning of the offseason, Mr. Bowlen had a press conference, where he inplied
we may be getting a new QB. I remember thinking, Mr Bowlen, came across excited at the
prospect. It even created a local media buzz.
When we traded for Quinn, all of that spectulation seemed to die out.
Could it be… that the move for Quinn, ( Remember the compensation ) was smoke and mirrors
before the Draft.
Since Observations are " Just my best guess" What if McDaniels, suspected, He may have the
answer to Tebow’s throwing problem…some time ago.
Pitched it to Mr. Bowlen…and as we say, the rest is history…
We may never know, but then it is after all, just an Observation.

Nice writing as usual. Hmmm. As I was reading about Brady’s adventures at Michigan, I thought of Orton’s years in Chicago. Sounds like you have purchased tickets for the Tebow express. rocko, I'm not any train.
I’m always going to be a an Orton fan. I don’t think that he’s going to get an entirely fair shake this year, and that’s truly a shame. I’m simply reading what seems to be going on between Tebow and McD. To this observer, there is an intensity there that McD hasn’t shown to or with any other player to date. I think that’s going to matter, at some point in the year, and Tebow will get a job out of it. He’s going to be well-trained, and it won’t happen unless he’s ‘ready’ – I’m not sure that a rookie will be, but that’s a long discussion.
McD seems to be drawn to the young man, and vice versa. That’s really about it. The rest will play out.

better athlete and football player
probably right. Better QB, very debateable at this time. My point however was really just that some QBs are brought in to learn for a few years, some are just thrown into the fire. It obviously depends on the player, the situation of the team, and the coaches. Seems it is becoming more common to just throw them out there and let them play. I think McD is aiming to do that.

It's like a secret weapon
when your coach can see something subtle that everyone else misses and realize the player is a better bet than everyone else thinks. It’s nice to be headed up by a quarterback guru in a quarterback driven league. Tebow is in a pretty good situation. Like you, Doc, I expect Orton to start. Right now, Tim’s probably either third or fourth on the depth chart, and no matter how steep his learning curve I can’t imagine him catching Orton between now and September. I’d be surprised if he became the backup before the end of the season. But if he does move ahead of both Quinn and Brandstater during his rookie year he’ll probably start in his second. Thanks for the background on Brady. So much of good drafting has got to be knowing those insider stories, maybe having lots of contacts around the country . . .

starting in his second sounds ideal to me... But if we're going to spend this season bringing A LOT of youngsters up to speed... maybe we do throw him into the fire if coach believes.

Just a thought...
Quinn and Tebow have the same head start on the playbook. And Quinn didn’t really accomplish anything at Cleveland. So, the argument could be made that Tebow, if he’s as talented as everyone says, could certainly be ahead of Quinn on the depth chart already.
And Orton, he only had one offseason before he started for the Broncos last year. He played pretty well. Who’s to say Tebow couldn’t learn the playbook (or some of it) just as fast as Orton, then his natural abilities might shine through? Expereince vs ability. Is it possible he beats Orton hands down by the start of the season?
I’d probably root for Orton to start as well, I’m just saying its certainly possible. I’m sure there are several quarterbacks who have done it before.

Going from the college to the pro game is a big jump
Having played QB in the NFL gives Quinn a big lead over Tebow. It’s not just a matter of learning McDaniels’ playbook. The speed of the game makes it a huge adjustment going from college to pro. Orton has more experience with McDaniels’ system and has playing experience as a starting QB. Right now he’s lightyears ahead of Tebow. Beating Orton hands down before the start of the season? Do you realize what’s involved. Remember how totally lost Brandstater looked the very first time he was on the field in a real game? And that was just preseason. We all know how complex McDaniels’ system is, and how much better Orton should be with a years’ experience with it. It didn’t suddenly get uncomplex when Tebow was drafted. I wouldn’t rule Brandstater out of the mix, either. He might beat out Quinn and be second or third on the depth chart.

I wish I could agree that that
If Tebow isn’t ready to start and they dump Orton a year early McD will be ripped by every pundit commentator and half-fan in he country. the sad thing is, that time, they’d be right.
It’s not that I don’t understand that pell-mell charge to Tebowville, but until he’s won the job, it’s foolish to get rid of the most experienced QB Denver has, and a player who won’t win by himself, but will, consistently, win if you put a decent team around him. We don’t know that about Quinn or Brandstater and we don’t know anything about Tebow in terms of the NFL. Orton had a good year last year with some decent coaching for the firs time in his career. Dumping him doesn’t do Orton or Denver any favors.

It's not just mechanics....
First of all, excellent article Doc! Thank you.
There is no doubt McDaniel’s has already put his stamp on Tebow. I call it having a Teboner. Most of us, myself included, seem to have one as well. The guy is so passionate it’s just plain exciting.
However, Tebow’s ability to be game ready is more about his ability to read defenses after he understands the playbook than it is about his mechanics. While there is zero doubt about his work ethic, it’s not all classroom learning. It takes a while for a QB to understand the speed of the game, the different looks, etc.
On top of that, McD’s playbook takes years to master. We are not running a version of Urban Meyer’s spread so most of it will be brand new to Tebow. And based on his wonderlic score, we aren’t dealing with a Brain Doc, Doc. So while I understand McD’s Teboner, and while I am well aware of Tebow’s work ethic, I just don’t understand why everyone is talking mechanics. It would seem to me that the real issue for him would be the same as nearly every other QB to ever enter the League.
McD will play the best player. We know this already thanks to Mario Haggan and Tony Carter. IMO I just can’t see Tebow being the starter this year. Or even 2nd string for that matter. More importantly I think the real issue will be his ability to pick up the playbook and read defenses. I wouldn’t be surprised or disappointed if it takes him 2 years but just can’t see it being done in 1 Summer.

Tebow hasn’t even played at the next level. He’s got to learn the playbook and learn to play QB at the next level, and you’re way underestimating the difficulty. Right now I’d say he’s fourth string.

And Brandstater
just may out play them all. Let’s throw that one in the mix also. Nobody knows what will happen and all the speculation is bull. Orton is the best on the team right now. I think he will be the best all season also.
I'd love to see Brandstater surprise everyone
and be the number two man going into the season. I’ve been wondering how much progress he’s made since last year.
"Surprised to see you, Captain, though pleased." — from Star Trek episode Space Seed.
I won't be sad if you turn out to be right
because it’ll mean he’s embarked on a hall of fame career. But even great QBs are usually not effective their first year unless their team has a great defense and powerful running game, with the rook’s job being mainly not to give the game away. But even this limited kind of success has happened only on teams which had no real alternative to the rookie QB. If they’d had a reasonably effective vet they’d have played him. The Broncos do have a reasonably effective vet. If Tebow nonetheless beats him out even before the start of the season it’ll be a pretty remarkable feat. A more likely scenario is Orton gets injured around midseason or later, Tebow comes in and rallies the team, and after that is never dislodged.
"Surprised to see you, Captain, though pleased." — from Star Trek episode Space Seed.
I lean that way
But as person who likes to be based on solid ground, is there any actual evidence that Tebow is anywhere close to Orton or Quinn right now besides the fact the McD likes him? Not really.
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
They rigged the Wonderlic on him
They put in questions on evolution……I think that everyone is talking mechanics because quite frankly, if he had kept the long windup, he’d be committing too many fumbles – it exposed the ball, and they’re tougher on that in the NFL so it wasn’t a small issue – the time it took to make the throw was also of concern. According to McD , that’s fixed now, but it’s yet to be tested at game speed, which will happen this summer in preseason.
Yes, now he needs to learn the footwork, the playbook, reading defenses under center, etc. You’re right about the playbook being quite different, ditto the terminology. It’s a lot to learn, and I’ve always said that I am leery of starting QBs as rookies unless the circumstances are pretty much perfect. McDaniels was making the point that Tebow seems to be absorbing material much faster than usual, and that’s great – but not enough, on its own.
But at the same time, McD will do what he sees as best. Tebow has no pro experience, and that makes a huge difference over Quinn vs. Orton, for example. I hope that McD takes some time to let Tebow develop, but at this point, that’s the huge unknown. We’ll just have to wait until training camp.
Gnothi Seauton
I'm on board
And would figure Orton will start. I’m just countering the playbook argument. I’m not convinced Orton’s prior three years has anything to do with learning McDaniel’s playbook? Orton will obviously have a year head start, but I was just suggesting that Orton was able to start after just one offseason with the new playbook, so its in the realm of possibility for Tebow to do it as well. I’m not wishing for this to happen, just saying its a possibility.
Still got your Creedence...
by OutOfYourElement on May 8, 2010 3:17 PM MDT reply actions
Its not just about knowing the playbook its about being able to read defenses and knowing the playbook well enough to change the call against certain looks .
Orton had not only extensive time and experience learning to read nfl defenses he gained this experience under center which is much tougher than from the gun.
Expecting Tebow to learn all this stuff as well as how to play under center well enough to surpass Orton or Quinn is a tall order.
It is...but my money is on him doing it...and if not, we still get KO...so its a win/win situation!

but I’m worried McD is letting his guard down and giving away too many of his secrets…LOL
I understand the issues that McDaniels making these statements in May will create, and I also worry about the effect of this on the team. It’s not what I would have wanted, but I have to admit – I also understand. Just like those patients of mine who were looking down the barrel of a very large healthcare gun – painful surgeries with uncertain outlooks but who really weren’t that hard to cure – Tebow was a great unknown to most coaches and a clear issue with a clear ‘cure’ for McDaniels.
What’s funny to me is a not so common fact (at least here at MHR and analyst in the media) that one day people will look back on McDaniels and see the very things you are talking about and state it as if it was theirs…
Denver fans should be congratulating McDaniels on his level of understanding of the mechanics of that position. They might also recognize that this was the guy who claimed that Tebow’s problem was jut the ’he dipped it a bit". Like all coaches, he knows when to lie with a straight face to influence the outcome he wanted to produce.
I guess we will live with rose colored sun glasses on and everyone else will just keep squinting at the sun…
Well written…… I agree whole-heartedly but it will probably become a frustrating situation. The short term outlook kinda sucks for EVERYBODY. Meaning; Tebow, McDaniels, as well as the fans and entire Broncos organization. I’ll explain my thoughts:
When John Q Public considers what it costs to be a fan, and how lucrative it is for owners, coaches and players to be connected to the NFL, the “win now” montra overtakes all other strategies and concept of “rebuilding” any franchise is a project with a very short leash. There was once a day when a rookie quarterback could throw 150 yds, 2 to 3 INTs, including 1 TD (in a losing effort) and the franchise would walk away consoled by the fact it was a great “learning experience” for the kid. NOT SO in 2010!
When it comes to public opinion, there is nobody to compare this kid to (at least in professional football). If football fans (as a whole) were asked to grade Tebow on a scale of 1-10, the desparity would be astronomical. A huge percentage on the 8 or 9 end would face another huge chunk on the 1 to 2 side of the spectrum. Both the media and the fans (alike) talk about this guy like they do controversial entertainers. A few days ago, I listened to a “watercooler conversation” regarding the “like-abiltiy” of Lady GaGa and Adam Lambert in the world of pop music. If I had to interpret their overall approval rating, I’d say half see them as 9’s…… and the other half 2’s. There were no in-betweeners! Although Gaga and Tebow share very little in common (LOL), the love him or hate him anology is spot on for both.
All that leads me to this….. Tim Tebow is untested. We all agree with that. What’s very different is that his “success” or “failure” will be magnified ten times that of every other rookie in the league. That’s unfair but reality. Thousands of voices on either side (of this silly spectrum anology) are waiting on pins and needles to say “I told you so!” and that doesn’t do much to elongate the learning curve. No matter what the results are from Tebow’s first start. The headlines will read; “McDaniels was RIGHT” ….. or….. “McDaniels was WRONG”.
The area I fear most for the young man is dealing with failure. The likelihood everything will turn to gold (as it has in high school and college) is all but nil. It’s the one area tim is not only untested, but hasn’t even had a lick of practice. I hope and pray McDaniels sits young Mr Tebow on the bench and doesn’t bring him into a game for much more than a few snaps (to hand the ball off) during “garbage time”. I say that with every hope Tim will become a superstar some day.

Excellent article!
Gotta love the competition that KO will have for the starting gig. That does nothing but help everyone of them get better!
I’ve never had to be swayed into thinking Josh knew the QB position better than most. Hopefully he will be a “tad” bit more low key with the comments from now until preseason. :)
Thanks much for the article!
