"I want to show the coaches they got a big steal," Hillis said during organized team activities last week. "That's just the way I think and work. I feel like I can do just about anything really well, whether it's running or blocking or catching the ball out of the backfield."

I agree with Hillis on this one

Maybe Hillis doesn’t fit into McD’s system, or maybe he had a different personality than McD was looking for. But as for who is the better football player… Hillis all day, everyday. All Hillis ever did was what ever coach asked him… blocked, caught, and ran hard at TE, FB, and RB. Quinn was going to be released by the Browns anyway.

Quinn is a pretty boy, Hillis is a work horse. I don’t think this trade will affect the outcome of our season too much, but the Browns definatly got the better end of the stick.

by alvinfall on Jun 1, 2010 7:58 AM MDT reply actions

I Liked Hillis

I liked Hillis alot, but I think he needed a new opportunity. He did not take advantage of his opportunities under McDaniels. He should have been more effective in short yardage, but looked slow to the hole.

I think we got the better end of the stick since we got a solid backup QB. This will always be more valuable than a fullback.

Go Payton Hillis...

I hope this is the only thing that McD does wrong. Payton is a player, like Tebow is a player, not quite the same but close. He will prove people wrong.

Wish him well...

Though one of the team favorites something just didn’t click with McD. Doubt we will ever find out but I for one will always keep an eye on how Hillis is doing in Cleveland.

Good luck, Hillis

I hope that we got the better end of the deal, that Quinn will make good on his skills. I’m not about to doubt Hillis though.

I hated when he was traded, but it was for the best.

I just hope that we don’t have to deal with a full charging Peyton Hillis coming at our defense any time soon.

Wish You Were Still Here :(

Trading Hillis was one of McD’s decisions I still question. If the Broncos have trouble with RB depth next season it will go right back to the Hillis/Quinn trade. IMHO Hillis was a potential offensive weapon never fully utilized by coach McD. I hope one of the UFAs we signed can fill in as the 3rd RB on the depth chart. Oh, Coach McD is doing a great job of filling the roster with hard working players without issues so pass on Lendale White.

There is no evidence that

he had problems learning the playbook. The only evidence we have is that he fumbled at a key moment, and caused a penalty or two on ST. He also skipped a game for a family emergency…(while understandable, it showed lack of dedication) I’m not trying to rip on hillis or defend him, just trying to point out the only facts we DO have.

Except all the times I got to watch him run on to the field and and have no idea where to go.

My evidence is based on me watching him from about 10 rows up, so it’s obviously biased. I’m not trying to convince anyone of anything. I couldn’t miss that guy and his deer in the headlights look less.

The problem is

That McD’s Offense did not call for a FB that was too small to block the bigger guys. Hillis was one of my faves, and I almost even bought the jersey…But its known that he is smaller than larsen (unless I’m somehow mistaken) and could not block as well. I mean we saw what doom did to FB’s that tried to block him…instead of slowing him down all they did was piss him off when he had to scrape them off his cleats. Maybe he did not give the PB enough time, maybe he didn’t care. If that is the case then its good he is gone. But if its not, I for one wish he had gotten a better shake.

I’m also not trying to say you don’t know what you are talking about, or what you saw. I believe you. but he did not get many opportunities in games to do anything.

Agree DenBronx

McD thought he was too small. I saw none of the confusion alluded to by Gr3yStreet. He was only in for a dozen or so offensive plays all season and he looked comfortable to me and blocked and ran well. I like his character. IMO Cleveland got the better deal.

What? Are you being serious?

Why would we regret trading a fourth string running back who barely contributed to the team at all? I really loved Hillis, but this isn’t a trade we’re going to regret for “many years to come”.

I regret trading him because he has talent

Why he got buried on this depth chart I have no idea, since all through training camp all we heard was McD was in love with what Hillis could do and he was definatelt featured in training camp last year. To me Quinn has been completely over-hyped, in all honesty, I don’t see him as any upgrade over Simms, the only thing he has going for him over Simms is that he is a former 1st round talent for whatever that is worth, but the same can be said for Ryan Leaf, Jamarcus Russell, and a whole host of other 1st round busts. I think Hillis is a special player that will have a great career, he has that it factor, he reminds me of a John Riggins type, he’s a guy you want on your team, Quinn is a guy who worries more about how he looks posing in a mirror versus being a QB. Granted we don’t know how either career will pan out, but I have seen both Hillis and Quinn, and I would lay money on Hillis being a top RB/FB player and Quinn out of the league in three years.

Hillis had the makings of a solid 3rd/4th string RB with the versatility to play some at FB and TE.
Still, even if he is able to revert to his play from the season before last I am still not sure that this was a bad trade.

Given how poorly Simms played last year and the fact that TB and Tebow both could stand another year of seasoning before being relied on for a lot of snaps, we were in desperate need of a quality backup QB.

Would Baltimore fans have been upset if they traded Le’Ron McClain and a couple low conditional draft picks to Minnesota for Sage Rosenfels? How about for Tavaris Jackson?

What difference does it matter where he was picked

Just because Leaf and the Hutt were first rounders does that make them better than Hillis just because he was picked in the seventh?

What about TD? He was picked in the sixth behind Ki-Jana Carter, Tyrone Wheatley, Napolean Kaufman, James Stewart and Rashaan Salaam who were all picked in the first round. I’d take TD over any of those first rounders.

All that matters is how they play once they get to NFL. What round they get picked in just determines how much money the rookie is going to make and how big of a bust they’ll be if they don’t work out.

Hillis was one of the true Broncos that I've seen.

For a kid to come out of college and have that kind of impact when he got his chance to make plays due to injuries to starters, and on top of that throw in a Mile High Salute, means he really was a Bronco, and wanted to be one.

I will trust in Coach on this one, but from the outside, it sure is sad to lose the Rumblin’ Redneck. Best of luck, Peyton.

Hillis

Was another guy who succeeded in Shanahans running scheme. This guy was a Mike Anderson who could catch well. If he was truely a stud, he would have been successful in a power scheme as well. Probably would have been better. Hillis is an above average receiving fullback who looked good (who doesn’t?) In Shanahans zone blocking scheme for a couple games. Wish him the best and wouldn’t mind if he proved me wrong, but never felt he could ever consistantly contribute.

what struck me as news

is that Hillis doesn’t seem to know any more than the rest of us why he wasn’t playing. Before this article it struck me as just as possible that Hillis knew why and wasn’t letting on.

At this point I’m thinking it’s got to be for a good reason (because McD strikes me as a fair coach) that is not a good idea to speak aloud for PR reasons. And what I’m thinking is that Peyton might just not have proven an ability to get a good grasp of McD’s offense. Good coaches can’t say that a player is better suited for a “simpler, more straightforward” offense. There’s just not a nice way to say that.

by tunesmith on Jun 1, 2010 4:11 PM MDT reply actions

one thing we can't lose sight of with Hillis

is that he was traded, not cut. And he wasn’t traded for magic beans either, he was traded for a very good young quarterback (I forgot what else was in the trade…future 5th?). That says something about how good he is right there.

I don’t think McX went to Cleveland and said, “What will you give us for the Albino Rhino?” It is more likely that he said, “What do we have to do to get Brady Quinn?”

I don’t think it is fair to say that McX “got rid” of Hillis. We traded him. When you buy a steak dinner, do you say that you “got rid” of your money? No, you say you bought dinner. Cementing our QB position was more important than solidifying the RB corp. So we got Quinn. Or Quinner. Steak Quinner.

The bottom line is that we improved the QB position through this trade.

The question is whether or not one of our new RBs can step up and give us production similar to what Hillis brought during his time in Denver.

Well, after we dumped Simms we needed to pick up another QB.

I’m not sure why you think this is a false dilemma. Our options were:

1. Keep Simms
2. Cut Simms and pick up another QB.

after that, if you pick option 2 then we could:

2a) sign a free agent QB
2b) trade Cleveland for Quinn
2c) trade for someone else

Feel free to state your opinion of 1 vs 2

Then feel free to state your opinion on 2a vs ab vs 2c

If you pick 2a or 2c, please specify who you would have preferred us to sign or trade for as our new backup QB.

Or, you can just decide to make snide comments about “false dilemmas” with the rest of your friends from your rhetoric class.

by Bronco$ on Jun 2, 2010 7:49 PM MDT up reply actions

I once again issue my challenge: from your perspective, based on who was available at the QB position this offseason, who would you rather the Broncos picked up to be the backup? What would it have taken for them to get him? It is easy to throw stones. It is far more difficult to come up with constructive ideas.

I am not saying Brady Quinn doesn’t have his flaws. However, he is a young player with at least some experience as a starter in the NFL. He played in a system similar to ours in college, and at least some of his shortcomings can be chalked up to poor coaching, poor scheming, and not much offensive talent to work with.

Look what the Seahawks gave up for Charlie Whitehurst this year. Its hard to get even a mediocre QB without paying a premium. Then look at the RB that Washington has been able to acquire this offseason. Veteran running backs who have been reduced to back-up status are dime a dozen in the NFL.

by DoubleJay on Jun 3, 2010 12:17 AM MDT up reply actions   1 recs

Take a breath

I am not a big fan of Quinn, nor the trade that was used to acquire him; but I do not think it was a bad trade for the Broncos. And I know that backup running backing arent worth much in a trade, even if Quinn proves to be a mediocre backup it still wasnt a bad trade. With all that said, if you are letting me play GM Hillis would have not been part of the package if I was making the trade; it’s not like the trade required Hillis in order to get down

Hillis

McD has proven over and over again that he is a control “freak” and is ego driven. My personal feeling about the Hillis affair is that as “Broncoman” said “since all through training camp all we heard was McD was in love with what Hillis could do”. Not agreeing with or not saying the Bronco “politically correct” words or disagreeing with the “boss” could put any player in McD,s doghouse. When McD puts star quality players on the bench when we had an outside shot at the playoffs in the final game last year and many times refused to allow Hillis a 3rd or 4th down and short shot at making key yardage shows me it is all about small stature McD,s ego. He promotes “team” all the time but in actions he is a little Napoleon. You don’t see “Doom” or Orton, or Dawkins sporting any new “big money” contracts after all they did for “team” last year. McD will create a winning team and will return the Bronco,s to contender status, but it will be over the bodies of some great players who sacrificed for “Team” and were never rewarded. I would eventually like to learn the “real” story behind the Hillis trade because it certainly has NOT been published. Good luck Peyton Hillis, I am rooting for you!!

Systems Makes Players

After watching the 2009 season and the relationship between Hillis and McD, it became abundantly clear that McD never intended to use Hillis to his fullest capacity as far as helping the team win last season. I’m thinking this was all due to the fact that McD basically felt that Peyton lacked the loyalty he was looking for and the schemes and offensive strategies McDaniel’s implemented just didn’t suit nor exploit Hillis’s unique talents.

In 2008, Hillis blasted onto the scene and show cased his skills within a Shanahan West Coast offense and zone blocking scheme, and for four or five games Hillis played (prior to his season ending injury), he did not play like a lowly 7th round draft pick. Had Hillis have had the opportunity of playing the 2009 season with Shanny as HC and the same zone blocking—West coast passing attack; Hillis would still be a Bronco.

Secondly, had Hillis not gotten injured in 2008 and missed the last 4 or 5 games, the Broncos make the playoffs and thus saves Shanahan’s job. From what saw of Hilli’s performance in 2008…….he made the offense run much more effective and teams had to account for his ability to exploit the zone blocking scheme by breaking off big gains and hard running on 3rd and short and his ability to catch the ball out of the back field.

How well Hillis performs in Cleveland will depend upon what sort of West Coast passing attack/zone blocking scheme that Cleveland will run; b/c its abundantly clear that Hillis performs best in systems that zone block and uses the West Coast offense. Any other system Hillis will look like a 7th round draft pick.

However, I’m going to reserve the right to chalk up everything that has transpired since the firing of Shanahan to the hiring of McDaniel’s, to the trading of Cutler, Marshall, Hillis, and Scheffler(sp) as “Destiny and Change”. Nothing is Etched in Stone. Its a new season in 2010, both Shanny and McD must show they can win and Cutler, Marshall, Scheffler, and Hillis must prove they can perform and win within the new systems and teams they now find themselves.
