Broncos Favoring the East? An Early Look at the 2011 Draft

The 2010 Draft class has yet to even strap on the pads for the Denver Broncos.  What better time to take a look into the class of 2011?

As ready as we are for football to actually start, the NFL season goes year round, and the Broncos have a group of people doing some scouting already, and we fans deserve to be ahead of the curve as well.

One of the most prevalent trends with the new regime in Denver is their favoritism for east coast players.  For instance, the SEC is widely considered to be the most NFL rich football conference in all of college football, so it's no coincidence that Josh McDaniels and the rest of the Broncos brass have used three out of five first round picks in two seasons on the heralded conference.  But it doesn't end there.

While the Broncos have used three of their top picks on Knowshon Moreno (Georgia), Robert Ayers (Tennessee), and Tim Tebow (Florida), they have also dedicated their other two top picks on ACC standouts in Demaryius Thomas (Georgia Tech) and Alphonso Smith (Wake Forest).

Perhaps this is merely a coincidence, and it should definitely be taken with a grain of salt.  But it's certainly no question that the east coast is a gold mine for talent, and 2011 may be the best group to come along this decade.  The Broncos are assured three picks in the top 64 after the Brandon Marshall trade, so they are poised to take advantage.

One well they might like to dip into is that of Butch Davis' North Carolina Tar Heels, who boast five potential first round draft prospects.  No need to read that again--the North Carolina Tar Heels can play some football, and are arguably the most talented collegiate defense we will see in the next decade.

Might one--or more--of these young studs be donning the orange and blue come 2011?

Star-divide

There was much talk on this site that the Broncos would draft Tennessee defensive tackle Dan Williams, whom they ended up passing on not once but twice.  Not that Williams isn't a talented player, but this was not the right year for the Broncos to go after defensive linemen early on in the draft.

Even more prevalent than the talks of Dan Williams were those including Alabama linebacker Rolando McClain, who wound up being drafted by division foe Oakland with the eighth overall pick.  The Broncos didn't do a whole lot to upgrade their youth at either position in 2010, and reasonably so.  The talent simply did not match the value of the picks the Broncos had.

This year--in all likelihood--it will.  Two of the Broncos' top needs heading into 2011 as far as needing a potential starter could be inside linebacker and defensive line, and the North Carolina Tar Heels boast top tier talent in both areas.

1.  Quan Sturdivant, Linebacker, 6'2" 235

4.43-4.56

Sturdivant may be the most underrated player of the bunch, but he's not one to be overlooked.  As a junior, he led the star-studded defense with 79 tackles.  As a sophomore, he led the team with a total of 122 tackles.  After playing the first couple of years as a Tar Heel at the outside linebacker position, he made the switch to the inside and had a very successful junior season.  Sturdivant is the leader of the defense, and he possesses great instincs.  He is a phenomenal finisher and as you can see by his reported 40 yard dash times, he is extremely fast for a linebacker.

Perhaps Sturdivant will be evaluated as an outside linebacker in a 4-3 defense at the next level, but he has the versatility to play any linebacker position.  A scouting report from FF Toolbox indicates that Sturdivant may have every asset the Broncos front office looks for in a player:

Do-it-all linebacker Quan Sturdivant did not spend any time learning on the sidelines at North Carolina. As a true freshman he played in all 12 games and earned five starts, tallying 47 tackles, 1.5 tackles-for-loss, one sack, one interception and even blocked a punt. That set the stage for his breakout sophomore campaign.

In 2008 Sturdivant started every game and led the team with an incredible 122 tackles, including a NCAA FBS high 87 assisted tackles.

For the 2009 season Sturdivant moved to the middle of the linebacker corps and his leadership has led to a stifling Tar Heel defense. He was not asked to do as much as far as tackling is concerned from his new position (thanks to an improving defense around him), but he still led the team with 75 tackles during the regular season and did a great job getting into the backfield -- totaling 12.0 tackles-for-loss, one sack and six quarterback hurries.

What makes Sturdivant so valuable is his versatility. He can play any linebacker position, and once he is there he can do everything one would want a linebacker to do. He can obviously use his 6-2, 232 pound frame to fight his way into the backfield, but he is also more than capable of dropping back into coverage.

2.  Bruce Carter, Linebacker  6'3" 230

4.46-4.57

There is simply no reason not to like linebacker Bruce Carter as a candidate to clog holes in the NFL for the next decade plus.  Like fellow linebacker Quan Sturdivant, Carter is known for his speed, strength, and versatility.  Probably more impressive than anything though is his prowess on special teams, where he led the nation in 2008 with an absolutely outstanding five blocked kicks.

Five blocked kicks is an unbelievable number for an entire special teams unit over the course of a season, especially at the highest level of collegiate competition.  Carter did it all on his own.

That's not to be overshadowed by his 158 career tackles, six career sacks, and two interceptions--both of which were returned for touchdowns.

NFL Draft Bible thinks he already has the inside track to the 2011 Defensive Rookie of the Year award:

The senior outside linebacker plays for perhaps the most talented front seven in all of college football, one that may feature, including Carter, four first-round picks in next year’s draft. Carter has to make enough big plays while staying within his defensive scheme to make sure that he is not considered the fourth wheel. Not an easy task. Quite often in the NFL the Defensive Rookie of the Year is a linebacker; athletically gifted linebackers who played in a pro-style defense in college can have a very smooth transition to the pros. The next in line for this honor may be Carter, a prototypical outside linebacker in UNC’s Butch Davis-led defense. If Carter can emerge from his senior season without being overshadowed by his teammates or pigeonholed as a cover-2 weak side linebacker due to his size, his draft stock could explode. It would not surprise the Draft Bible to see Carter end up in the top 20 of next year’s draft due to his previous game film, athleticism, instincts and sheer force of will.

3.  Robert Quinn, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker  6'5" 270

4.5-4.6

Up next is a guy who had 11 sacks and 19 tackles for a loss as a sophomore for the Tar Heels, along with six forced fumbles.  A guy who is expected to be the best pass rusher to come out of North Carolina since Julius Peppers in 2002.  Surprised as many on this site may be, UNC junior phenom Robert Quinn has no relation to current Broncos tight end Richard Quinn, a second round pick in 2009.

Quinn is a fantastic pass rusher who has the speed, athleticism, and overall ability to make the transition to outside linebacker in the NFL.  Some outlets are saying Quinn, if he enters the draft early, has the potential to be plucked off the board within the first two picks.  Quinn has elite level speed for his size, running reportedly in the mid-4.5 range.  That number is definitely subject to change as Quinn's weight will likely increase as he continues to add muscle mass.

Here is a scouting report from NFL Mocks on Quinn:

Quinn is a super athletic defensive end that possesses all the physical skills to take over games in the NFL.  Quinn has a rare initial burst off the line which allows him to get into the opponents backfield.  Quinn’s quick burst and overall speed makes him a target for double teams.  However, he has developed several pass rush moves that allow him to get around those double teams.  His 6 forced fumbles last season only enhance his playmaking ability.  Quinn makes his living in the offensive backfield.

4.  Marvin Austin, Defensive Lineman  6'3" 305

Austin is a guy that I definitely need to see more in-game action of.  Entering his junior season, Austin appeared to be arguably the best defensive line prospect in the country.  When it came to his production on the field, the statistics took a significant dip, and for good reason.  This is a guy who was consistently double-teamed as a junior and still managed four sacks and six tackles for loss.  His lateral quickness is phenomenal, and he is extremely stout against the run.

Some have questioned his motor, but again, I'm going to need more information on him.  As it stands, Austin is rated as the number one overall prospect in the entire draft by CBS Sports/NFL Draft Scout, which is my number one source come draft time.

Obviously, their list is subject to change, but Austin currently leads their group of all players, much less an extremely talented list of defensive linemen.

If you're a draft fan, the North Carolina Tar Heels are certainly a team to watch for 2010.  The Broncos will most likely have a very close eye on this star studded ACC squad.

just kidding. You’re a glorious, glorious soul, Sayre. Just wondering what took so long? The draft was over like two months ago! ; )

Carter sounds really intriguing as do the others. Is it every too early to invite them to a Dove Valley visit?

lol

I know, it was a long time coming, right? I should just up and put out the first mock of the season!

I don’t know if it’s too early for the FANS to invite these guys for a visit. I’m sure they have some down time this summer :)

There you go!

We invite him to a little cook out, few dogs, some brews. And if a couple friends named, say, Josh and Brian, just happen to be there, and you bring your stopwatch and i bring my camera… no harm there, right? : )

if sayre is addicting to wrinting about the draft...

then i’m addicted to reading about it.

These guys really interest me, I believe we should be looking at ILB, DL, and S in 2011…but McD never seems to do exactly what I think so he’ll probably draft a TE…j/k. Really I would be happy for any pick on defense since we are so old seemingly everywhere.

Good to see draft stuff during this offseason!

I think I’ll have to catch some North Carolina games this year if I can to see this guys in action.

So when can we be expecting your next mock? ; )

I actually think you’d make college football more interesting if you gave us your top players at each position you see us needing next yr (3 picks top 64 makes it very interesting). Of course, our picks will 32, 64 and whatever Miami ends up giving us in the 2nd.

I’d say: ILB, CB, RB, OL, DL (in no particular order)

For me

ILB, CB, DL, RB, OL in that order.

We need an ILB. However, if Mario does good this year then I can see McD passing it up. CB has to be on his mind. He has drafted 3 corners in the last 2 drafts. I wouldn’t be surprised if CB was the first position we went after. Our DL needs a burst of youth. Another good, young RB will go a long way. One of our 2nd rounders could possibly be a RB. OL is only a need if Harris or Clady have injury complications or Harris doesn’t resign. Other then that, we pretty much our OL set.

I'm attending grad school at UNC

and let me tell you, when I first saw these guys play defense it was enough to make me forget for a second that we’re a basketball school. I think anyone of them would be a great pick up.

Of the 4 up there, I would be the most wary of Austin. Yes, he’s huge and strong and supposed to be a beast, but I haven’t seen him make that many big plays. It could be the double teams, but that didn’t stop Suh or McCoy from making spectacular plays every once and a while.

by jwkcsu on Jun 10, 2010 7:17 PM MDT reply actions

Good points

In defense of Suh though, other teams had to account for Jared Crick, who is apparently just as good if not better a playmaker than Suh was, at least according to the Sporting News. They have Crick rated as the best player in all of college football.

Sayre

It’s truly amazing how much time and effort you spend on scouting the Broncos’ draft prospects. I really do appreciate it. Anyways, how do you expect to make a mock when you don’t really know what our areas of weakness are? I’m sure we can speculate, but how do you decide who we take until you know where we need it? Just speculation or drafting best player available? Ha, how do you even know who will have a good year this year in college football?

by higgyhoops12 on Jun 10, 2010 9:09 PM MDT reply actions

Thanks higgyhoops

I won’t be making any mock drafts for a while, and I am not sure they will be so frequent this year. I’m hoping to do more scouting reports for guys who would be good fits than predicting 30-35 times who will be part of our team. Perhaps I’ll mock our first and 2nd rounders, and give some suggestions.

As to gauging our needs, it’s kind of hard to to right now, but not really. I look at our ILB situation with Haggan (1 year left on contract, 30+ years old—I think) and the guys behind him, and you could say reasonably that ILB will be an area of focus this year. You could look at the Dumervil situation. If he bolts, a guy like Robert Quinn is high on the list because he has great pass rushing skills and potential as an outside backer.

You could look at our DL, which every starter is over 30. Behind them there is talent, but not a lot of big names, which sometimes you don’t need, but a lot of the time you do. McD and company have done a fantastic job of taking advantage of the depth at certain positions in the draft (WR and OL this year, DB last year).

As for knowing who will do well in CFB, that’s a lot easier to predict that you might think. One guy, Phil Steele, has predicted the last 6 national champs. Pretty impressive stuff.

A vision without a plan is just a dream. A plan without a vision is drudgery. But a vision with a plan can change the world.

by Sayre Bedinger on Jun 10, 2010 11:01 PM MDT up reply actions

I approve

Having a focus more on the players rather than the draft order would be awesome in my opinion. More features like this one, focusing a particular team, or some other linkage between a set of prospects is a great idea rather than simply mocking the same players multiple times. For instance, you could do features on particular teams that you think schematically fit what McD wants to too… or conference run downs (i.e. top CBs of the Big 10, etc.)

Great article Sayre… really appreciate all your hard work!

North Carolina is going to be scary good in 2010!

In addition to the four front seven mentioned, they also have a safety that is highly ranked in D. Williams and a corner (K. Burney) that is also ranked highly.
I had a hard time coming up with the future needs of the Broncos (which I found to be a good thing), but here is how I see it: ILB, OLB, OL, DL, RB, and S. Most of my reasons centered around depth, but injuries could play a serious roll especially on the OL. Love talking about the draft 10 months in advance!!

Their DB's have two potential AA's.

Deunta Williams and Kendrick Burney are both fantastic athletes. I didn’t include them in this segment because I wanted to emphasize front seven, but I really like those two guys. Williams has 12 picks in his career already at the S position.

I like your list. Mine would look similar with DL higher than OL, probably OLB too.

Yeah people are ranking North Carolina in their preseason college top 10 in ranking purely cause they have a beat of a D. Their offence is apparently anaemic!
Im hoping that they make a few game of the week type slots this year so I can see them in Australia!

I’d stay away from them in the top 10, but they are a top 25 team based on their defense alone.

Sayre I was wondering how long it was going to be before you started on next years draft

I always look forward to seeing what you have to say on the kids coming out of college as I have limited opportunities to see them play, although hopefully I will be adding to my sports package this year which will mean I can get some college football.

The one query I have about the guys you are looking at is regarding the 1st 2 linebackers and whether they are bigger enough for what McD likes. It would appear that he likes LBs with at least another 20lbs on them and whether these two players would be able to carry that extra weight and still be effective or if they are likely to naturally get that bit bigger?

I thought the Broncos would be assured 3 picks in the top 64.

Oh yeah whens the 1st mock due?

by SteveUK on Jun 11, 2010 1:33 AM MDT reply actions

Thanks Steve!

As to the size of the LB’s, I think they are both certainly capable of adding some muscle mass, but I don’t know that it’s essential. For Sturdivant, anyway. I think you look at a guy like Sean Weatherspoon, whom we targeted. He was about 6’1" 235 pounds, but I think if these young guys packed on an extra 10 pounds of muscle, they wouldn’t lose any speed and they would be even more of a force.

And you’re right, we do have three picks. I meant to make that edit last night. I just changed it!

First mock or mock type article will be after Thanksgiving unless I get the urge before then :)

Sayre, Sayre, Sayre

You must have loved the Shanahan defenses, you know, the ones that had all the light, but fast linebackers, the ones that were identified by pundits as the best group of linebackers in the league, the ones that gave up a lot of big runs. I hoped for a long time that the Broncos would beef up their linebackers to stop the damn runs. McDaniels seems to be doing that. Regardless of how good they may be, I don’t see your first two linebackers, Sturdivant and Carter, as being picked by McD. Sure, the Broncos now have some light fast linebackers in addition to some big ones, but that’s all the more reason they don’t get another light one in the first round, or even the second, and they may be gone after that. On your third player, Quinn, the Broncos already have Dumervil and Ayers at OLB. I don’t see another conversion project from DE to OLB at this stage and he is too light to play in McD’s D at DE. Austin, if he is indeed any good, won’t be there when the Broncos pick because we are going to the playoffs this year and won’t pick until after 20 (and won’t trade up very high for Austin). Nice try though. Here’s a thought. Maybe because the Broncos picked so many in the East the last two years, they pick in the West next year. Its nice to review the past for insight, but don’t let the past dictate the future. The Broncos will pick wherever the talent is and, as good as the SEC is, the PAC 10-16 ain’t “chopped liver.”

I must say I would definitely have you on the Scout team, were I able to make such a decision for the Broncos organization. Good look, Sayre

I don’t think it’s too early at all. We need something to fill our Bronco fix during these slow times.
The first two linebackers you’ve got listed are too small (currently), IMO. If that changes, my opinion might change also. Quinn is an interesting prospect, but I just don’t think we’re in the market for an elite or high-priced OLB. Again, though, if he effectively added 20+ pounds, my opinion would probably change to projecting him as a DG. Austin looks like a good prospect. His ability to take on double teams should project well in our defense, since it’s tough for a team to double up on him when they’ll have to double up on Jamal.
I agree that the front-seven is where we should be looking. I think we’re going to need a TE by the 2nd round, also.

November, gentlemen. We go again to their house and we make it OUR MF house!! We take our Crown from those punks, not from around those punks! We take it in November and we protect it in January. Two wins. That's it. Take it!!!
