Same Old Elvis - DenverBroncos.com
Elvis Dumervil smiled, laughed and joked with teammates as he went through drills on the opening day of Broncos' mandatory minicamp Friday. It was business as usual for a player who has established himself as one of the team's most fun-loving players, not to mention one of the league's fiercest pass rushers.

Leaps and Bounds
Perhaps the most important quality in a cornerback is selective amnesia, the ability to immediately forgive yourself for your mistakes on the previous play, game, or even season. It's the ability to dissolve the pain and retain the lessons learned.

Zane Beadles, Jarvis Moss promoted; Seth Olsen, Robert Ayers demoted | All Things Broncos
Zane Beadles, the second-round pick out of Utah who had been working at right tackle, has shifted to first-string left guard. The move was made with the limited return of right tackle Ryan Harris from toe surgery. Harris is still only taking a few snaps and in his stead, veteran D’Anthony Batiste has been taking first-team, right tackle reps.

The Broncos and Dumervil may have plenty of work to do before they can agree on a new contract, but that Dumervil was here, yucking it up with his teammates, was certainly a positive sign.

The plight of the assistants | National Football Post
On May 11th, Larry Kennan of the NFL Coaches Association made a statement that the assistant coaches are considering forming a union. Letters about this potential move went to head coaches and NFL team representatives. This was, of course, motivated by the handful of NFL teams who discontinued their assistants’ retirement accounts and benefits last year, sending shock waves through the coaching community. The assistant coaches (and their wives) are worried that salaries may start going south, that more teams will eliminate pensions, and that existing benefits will get chipped away.

Jarvis Moss must have naked pics of many many people or he is the best practice player ever. I’ve been watching this dude since 2007 and haven’t seen him flash once in a regular season game.

I don’t get it. I remember seeing a fan shot here a few weeks ago that said Moss was promoted over Ayers so it sounds like this move was made a while ago.

I’ll be watching Ayers in preseason quite closely. I EXPECT him to be good this season. Not good by MHR homer standards where almost every Bronco gets a ribbon, but good by NFL “I’m an impact player like a Top 20 pick should be” standards. This is not a good step in that direction.

But that was a VERY well played game against a team that had more talent.

I'm a bit worried as well

I’d like to think the reason JArvis is playing ahead of Ayers is because his play warranted it and not because of Ayers’s short comings.

At the very least this has to be a bit disconcerting that a message is needing to be sent to Ayers at this time.

Moss alleged promotion

has no basis in any fact coming from Dove Valley. This clinging to whispers in an attempt to find some reason for panic, concern, discord, or publicity is rediculous.

There is NO depth chart until TC. Remember. Remember last year and Coach saying if it didnt come from this building its not credible.

That's right

There is no such thing as a promotion or a demotion in OTA’s. Every player is right now given the opportunity to compete – that’s it.

In fact

in yesterday’s presser, McD talked about getting guys reps in certain plays that they had either run before and where the coaches wanted to see improvement or something new the coaches wanted to evaluate. Consequently he said anyone can be in there at any time.

I think the only telling thing is the vets who were given the OTA’s of last week to give others an opportunity to make an impression. Obviously those vets have a leg up…

moss is not over over ayers

he is replacing doom. its the undrafted rookie who took ayers place. Ayers wasn’t even on the field.

Thats right Ayer was NOT on the field

According to cbs rapid reports

Broncos position updates: Ryan McBean and Jarvis Green shared first-team snaps at RDE. At OLB, Jarvis Moss took Robert Ayers’ place, with Ayers not participating as a “coach’s decision.” Undrafted rookie OLB Kevin Alexander was in the lineup for Elvis Dumervil, who continues to miss practices.

J.Moss ova R.Ayers

man i think we shud jzt keep robets hand on da ground where he was great comin out of highschool nd then move jarvis to the linebacker spot where if u go back to dat jetz game of 2008 nd the M.I.A. games he was gettin back there nd killin the wildcat

by bigcountre33 on Jun 12, 2010 8:54 AM MDT reply actions

But would Ayers be able to be a lineman in a 3-4 defense? It's probably not the best spot for him.

If we were still running a 4-3, then that might work for Ayers, but we don’t run that anymore. I think Ayers is just fine where he is. Last year, he had quite a learning curve transitioning to an OLB and it would be a waste if we threw away that year of learning to put him back on the line where there is still no guarantee of him being effective in the future.

As far as Moss is concerned, I’m hesitant to use one game that was played one and a half years ago as an indication of success in the present. There’s a reason that he wasn’t a starter last year and I don’t believe that he is ahead of Ayers on the depth chart (not that a depth chart even exists at this point, anyways). We’ll just have to wait and see, but when 2010 starts I expect to see Ayers ahead of Moss on the OLB depth chart.

June is a slow month.

Sportswriters need something to write about. You’re going to hear news about who is skipping optional team activities and who is getting reps with what unit and who isn’t. This usually isn’t news, it is just something to hand in to your editor because you have to write something.

It isn’t coach speak to say there isn’t a depth chart in June because there isn’t. THat’s not to say that coaches don’t necessarily have their opinions on it but I would bet money that the reason Moss is getting reps with the first team right now is because he NEEDS it. Seriously, I wouldn’t read too much into this.

Ayers needs to step it up from his rookie year, I don’t think anyone would dispute that. But It is a little naive to assume that because a guy has trouble adjusting to the pro game his rookie year that he’s never going to develop. He might not – look at Moss if you want proof. But I believe what is fair is to give a guy a look at his second year. Did he improve on any success from his first year, did he rebound from his failures, or has he proven that the NFL is too much for him?

It is fun to make predictions about things from the couch and it feels good to be right, but in the end the player will provide the answers with his play on the field. I think that at this point Jarvis Moss has provided us with all the answers we need, while the jury is out on Ayers and say, Alphonso Smith.

But don’t be shocked if things don’t work out. The washout rate for first round picks is quite high. But while I think a guy’s rookie year is often telling, it may or may not tell us the whole story. On the one hand you have Mario Williams, who all the armchair Lombardis in the league was sure was a bust – and wasn’t. On the other hand you have guys like Moss, who had excessively high expectations placed on them and turned out to be what his doubters suspected all along.

The only one who truly has any sway over it is the guy in the pads. We’ll see as the year plays out what we’ve really got in Robert Ayers. But right now, it’s just something to talk about.

Why hate on your OWN team when you've got the Raiders?

Good point

these OTAs and minicamps are about team needs, and discovering them. To that end it is the bubble players who all have the greatest need, and who can be expected to be seeing elevated work loads right up until they are cut or, miracle of miracles, they make the roster.

There are a lot of ways to view things like Lloyd, Alexander, Moss and others’ increased reps, and one of them is to say that the team needs a lot of information on them in order to make cuts.

I have us at 81 (roster) with +6 rookies. On its face that indicates 7 early cuts to make it into training camp, though the pre-season PUP/IR will be available and could house Decker, Clady(I still shudder when I think that no player to suffer a patellar tendon injury has returned before 6 months, and that all but one missed the entire season, either from going to IR or simply not being ready to play after coming off the PUP) Hochstein and maybe others. Being placed on the preseason PUP/IR does NOT make a player ineligible to play in the first game of the year, but there are some rules that need to be followed.

By position here are my projected overages and deficiencies heading into camp:
QB=3/3 0(0%)
RB=8/6 2(25%)
WR=12/10 2(17%)
TE=5/5 0(0%)
G/C=9/9 0(0%)
OT=5/6 -1(-17%)
DT/NT=3/3 0(0%)
DE/DT=7/7 0(0%)
OLB/DE=10/6 4(40%)
ILB=7/6 1(14%)
CB=8/10 -2(-20%)
SAF=6/6 0(0%)
K=1/1 0(0%)
P=2/1 1(50%)
LS=1/1 0(0%)

We can ignore the punting battle by noting that it requires an additional roster slot and that there is space in the talent heavy CB list to be short one slot. Also, I feel we can ignore the deficiency at OT (though it is still very mucha worry, as the OTs have been picked clean aorund the league) when you consider the versatility of the players, especially newcomer Beadles. That leaves us with two ‘open’ slots on the regular roster and :

+40% (4 extra OLBs)
+25% (2 extra RBs (I’m including FBs in the RB list))
+17% (2 extra WRs)
+14% (1 extra ILB)
Total= 9 extra players, 2 ‘open’ slots, and +6 rookies still to sign.

Obviously some cuts will be coming sooner than later at OLB. The prime candidates are Davis, Garland, Bosworth, Alexander and Moss, with Atkins nearby. I would expect one from this group to be gone just to get us to 80. After that it will be tit-for-tat dropping players to replace them with the signed rookies. If we go by the numbers above, here is the potential pool of 13 players from which 7 names have to be dropped:

Hall, RB
Ball, RB
Baker, RB
Eckles, FB
Lyons WR
Williams, WR
Honeycutt, WR
Arnett, WR
Garland, OLB
Bosworth, OLB
Alexander, OLB
Griesen, ILB
Bishop, ILB

In addition there are a group of bubble players behind the above group, only slightly more stable:
Kelley, ILB
Moss, OLB
Atkins, OLB
Davis, OLB

If you see any hubbub about the names on any of the above lists, be wary, since they are fighting just to have a chance to make it to training camp, let alone the 53. The extra reps and first-team time are more indicative of a microscope than a future team photo…

I personally think it is a joke that all of a sudden people here think Klis has inside information and is doing good reporting

This story is ridiculous. Klis is stirring the pot. There have been no promotions/demotions as far as the Broncos are concerned. Everyone is saying Ayers is in the doghouse or Jarvis is getting 1st team reps because all of a sudden he is better than Ayers but nobody is saying that this Kevin Alexander character is better than Ayers because he is getting 1st team reps too. It doesn’t mean jack except that the coaching staff is giving reps to people who have worked hard in OTA’s in place of the guys who aren’t on the field (ie Doom and Ayers).

Just because Ayers was held out as a coaching decision doesn’t mean he was in McD’s doghouse. It could mean that he tweaked something and the coaches though he should take it easy. It could mean something entirely different.

From everything I have read prior to this I have gotten the impression from Wink and McD that Ayers has worked his butt off and is progressing by leaps and bounds. He is even taking a leadership role on the field in calling out plays and such. I doubt a player exhibiting these attributes would be in the doghouse. I could also be wrong but everyone is reading way too much into this.

Klis doesn’t know what he is talking about. He is making wild assumptions based on what he saw at minicamp and people here are believing it. Like the Mastermind said above. It is June and it is something to talk about.

I agree with that observation. However, at the press conference McD for a second time refused to talk about it. If it was an injury he would just say so right?
