Broncos Claim Running Back Kolby Smith
The Denver Broncos have announced that running back Kolby Smith, recently waived by the Kansas City Chiefs, has been claimed by the team off of waivers.
Smith, a 5'11" 218 pound back out of Louisville, is entering his fourth year in the NFL. In three years with the Chiefs, he rushed for 540 yards and three touchdowns.
A back with a good combination of size and speed (4.50 40 yard dash at 2007 NFL Scouting Combine), Smith will provide the Broncos with some good competition at the running back position heading into training camp. At Louisville, Smith rushed for 1,698 yards and 16 touchdowns while splitting time with backs like Michael Bush, Lionel Gates, and Eric Shelton.
Smith was drafted by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2007 NFL Draft, and finished the 2009 season on the Chiefs' injured reserve.
The Broncos also waived linebacker Korey Bosworth and punter A.J. Trapasso.

nice
My somewhat ill-informed sense of Kansas City is that they are very talent-rich at running back, so releasing this guy doesn’t necessarily mean he’s not very good.
He was really good, just kept getting hurt.
This is a good pickup for you guys, if he can stay healthy.
My long, drawn-out predictions that no one cares about, nor will bother to remember:
1. Todd Haley will still be the Chiefs Head Coach up to the 2011 season.
2. Clancy Pendergast won't make it to the 2010 season and was never intended to. Last-minute hire for a position that needed to be filled.
3. Todd Haley will not be the OC at the start of the 2010 season.
For once...
…the comments from another team’s fan is actually helpful and not “bashing”. Thanks jbj
I promise my next comments on the Arrowhead Pride to be a positive one.
the deal with Kolby
he showed a lot of promise until getting hurt two seasons ago against the Bucs. He has never recovered. He came back and Haley tried giving him the starting job and he got reinjured… I think its more of the Broncos picking the brain of a player from a division rival
Good points
and thanks jbj and tomahawk.

Agreed
Make lots of promises to get info about our team, then he’ll be cut.
Note to Kolby: If you talk I’ll hunt you down like a dog.
lol
There’s the rivalry we know and love. I was getting worried we were headed for hugs. ; )

Thank you sir
In 2008 he hurt his knee not sure on the specifics but it put him out the whole season and last year he hurt his ankle but not sure on the specifics either..
well, its not really an injury issue in my humble opinion
Thats simply bad luck.
An injury issue in my opinion is when you have the same ligament, tendon, muscle or bone that is constantly being injured. This is what makes a player injury prone.
Having various muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons injured is simply bad luck. The good news of this is that when they heal, they tend to heal back stronger than what they were when they tore, ruptured, fractured or were broken.
I’m not too concerned with his past injuries if what you stated was true. He won’t be the #1 or #2 back for us anyhow, and will only be thrown into games under certain situations or to give our guys a breather. His play time will be limited, but that does not limit his contributions!

It wasn't a MCL/ACL i think it started with a P.

that would be a serious bummer...
the comeback record from those things has been less than inspiring, and our LT Clady is dealing with one himself…

Yeah like i said below, he doesn't seem to be able to cut back like he did early on.
Man i just wish the season would start, I’m tired of waiting.
What I remember
is that he was a pretty good player. injury wise, sounds are a lot like Ryan Torain.
Now that that is over.....
Can we give him back and get that Charles dude instead?

I guess that answers that, regarding the punting game.
I don’t know much about Coquit other than he is young and comes from a kicking family, so he has been around football most of his life. I still worry that we haven’t sewed up the special teams and that is an important ant part of the game.
This guy Smith doesn’t impress me in the least. Sounds like they brought him in to steal some plays which is a good thing I guess. He’s been over there in their system for 4 years and hasn’t quite got it, so what makes the FO think he can get here? I don’t know…
Probably because he has been injury prone and was productive before that

Beat me to it
I was going to make the same observation. Torain came to mind as soon as I read about Smith’s injury history. But Shanahan was not deterred. I gues we’ll see if it was just a bad streak of injuries for either player or whether they are indeed injury prone. Still, it doesn’t bode well.
It's not a question of getting it.
He a smart guy that works hard, just had some bad luck with injuries and a crappy o-line. That’s about all i can tell ya about him, he didn’t get to much air time.
Colquitt was a coffin corner machine
in preseason and camp last year, I was surprised as hell when we took Berger instead of him midseason… Hopefully he can keep his form for a year with us and give us a punter for years to come.
I dot know why we got rid of Brett Kern....as soon as we did we started losing!

Your punter is our punters little bro, if he is anything like the rest of his family, he’ll do just fine.
K.Smith just never had a chance, he was always behind either a good back or a big money back,(Larry Johnson) that the team was hoping would get his act together. With the injuries coming at times when he might caught the coaches eye.

I like Kolby
Since we dont need him as a starter, I see him locking up the #4 spot behind Knowshon, Buck, and JJ.

If Baker is healthy,
I think the running style of each would make him (Baker) a stronger candidate for that last position.
numbers, numbers
I’ve had my doubts regarding whether we CAN have a 4th RB — besides Larsen.
Here’s a quick cheetsheet:
QB – 3
RB – 4(3 + FB)
WR – 6
TE – 3
OL – 9
TOTAL: 25
DL – 7
LB – 9
DB – 9
TOTAL: 25 + 25 = 50 + 3 specialists = 53
These are the numbers from last year, although I’m including Larsen as a LB. The RBs proper were: Moreno, Buckhalter, Jordan, Hillis.
It’s tough to see how or where we get the room. One place I would look is WR, but I don’t really like that idea. We could short OL but I don’t like that either. The best way to go seems to be to borrow the TE for blocking and go with 4 RBs.
Larsen was a 2-way player last year so you could say we actually went with 25½ on offense and 24½ on defense but there’s still a number problem. We could simply go short on defense (by declaring him a full-time FB) and that would allow 5 RBs. We’d actually be continuing with last year’s roster numbers since we did have one more RB when Jordan and Hillis are included [I’m only considering the core players: Arrington (added) V. Jordan + Hiliis (cut or traded)].
My point here is that I’m predicting we may go with 4 RBs. And I’d be curious to see how others solve the problem.
no goats, no glory.
Colinski
Marquez Branson has been practicing at Fullback also. Maybe between him and Larsen they can afford to keep 4 RB’s. Just a thought.
Character may be manifested in the great moments but it is made in the small ones -- Philip Brooks
Good point
but to date Larsen hasn’t seen any LB reps, and he talked like LB was a thing of the past for him. He may see reps there in training camp, but I think he is a true FB now, with LB experience. Without reps I don’t think they will view him as LB depth anymore, though.
However Branson for sure will be considered a dual depth/STs player, so he will be part of the TE 3 on the 53-man roster.
Reading between the lines, Larsen is on the bubble.
It looks like Denver is giving themselves two viable options for the RB depth chart to sort itself out, while providing competition at FB. I don’t see a lot of competition at the top of the RB list, though Moreno and Buck are a good combination of temperaments and should push eachother.
Arrington hasn’t been reported on at OTAs, not even in return duties, so I don’t see his position being any more secure than anyone else’s at this point, however, he has versatility and experience, so I will predict him as a keeper. His 3rd down play alone (blitz pickup, RAC ability from the backfield) may be worth keeping him.
So that puts us at (3). We won’t keep more than 4RB/FBs. I just can’t see that being possible without a serious deficit elsewhere.
Competition at the bottom is heavy: Hall, Ball both have experience on the roster and in Denver’s practices, but aren’t sure things. Baker is the lone young gun from the 2010 rooks. Eckles, Larsen and Branson are all less than sure things at FB, and only Branson scores marks at another active roster position each week outside of FB/STs. Smith is a talented vet with a 50% off tag because his expiration date is past…you never know. Sometimes there isn’t anything wrong with it and you get a steal. Other times it is unusable.
My guess is that Branson beats out Larsen and Eckles, and ? makes it as the 4th RB. I personally would like to see Ball make it, and I hope he is up to the task. We need his ‘type’ in our stable…he would be hell on tired defenses late in the year (squat, heavy, low to the ground), so here is hoping he has the chops to compete.
We aren’t just struggling finding enough numbers to keep RBs, we are struggling to find enough roles. there are good reasons to keep almost all of them, and in the end we may be choosing a backfield identity more than talent.

TC battering ram
He’ll be used to reduce the wear and tear on the other backs during camp and preseason.
