Just need to vent…
I was watching the NFL Network (which, I know, was my first mistake) and they showed two installments from their series Top Ten. The first was on Top Ten Gunslinger Quarterbacks. I figured John Elway would be in the top ten…his reputation is as a gunslinger…high risk, high reward and a rocket arm. He wasn’t. The majority of QBS in the top ten were reasonable…if not totally correct in my opinion. The list of top ten gunslingers (as far as I remember)…
10. Joe Namath
9. Kurt Warner
8. Warren Moon
7. Daryle Lamonica
6. Jim Kelly
5. Sammy Baugh
4. Dan Fouts
3. Sonny Jurgensen
2. Dan Marino
1. Brett Favre
So even though I felt Elway should be on the list, I felt okay about it.
Then I watched Top Ten Most Mobile QBs. Okay, I thought. Elway ranks in the top ten in QB rushing yards and QB rushing TDs. He is known for his ability to scramble and many of his most famous plays (such as the helicopter spin) involved him scrambling. So he was guaranteed top 5 in my opinion and I was excited.
Then I watched and was dumbfounded when I saw the following:
NFL Network’s Top Ten Scrambling QBs:
Donovan McNabb, Doug Flutie, Jim Zorn, DAN MARINO, Roger Staubach, Bobby Douglass, Mike Vick, Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, and Fran Tarkenton.
Seriously…I am old enough to have lived through ALL of Elway’s and Marino’s careers as a mature, knowledgeable football observer, and I wonder what games the compilers were watching to think that Dan Marino was (a) even one of the top ten most mobile QBs of all time and (b) a more mobile QB than Elway. I love Marino, and he is a justified Hall of Fame QB, but more mobile than Elway. What is going on?
Thanks for reading my vent. This was just buggin’ me. Am I off base here? I appreciate any comments.
