Broncos Announce Several Transactions
*** Courtesy of the Denver Broncos PR Department ***
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - The Denver Broncos on Thursday announced several transactions, including the signing of offensive lineman J.D. Walton, whom they selected in the third round (80th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft from Baylor University. As per club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Also on Thursday, the Broncos waived rookie defensive lineman Jaron Baston and designated fullback Kyle Eckel as waived/injured.
Walton (6-foot-3, 305 pounds) was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy (nation's best center) and earned first-team All-America honors as a senior in 2009, becoming the first Baylor offensive or defensive player to achieve that status in 18 years.
A three year starter at center for the Bears, he allowed just three sacks in 721 pass plays during the final two seasons.
He was first-team all-county offensive lineman at Allen High School in Allen, Texas, and was born on March 24, 1987.

Anyone else think it's weird we are signing J.D. (3rd round) before Eric Olsen (6th Round)

not really
His Agency could have a lot of clients to sign, Olsen could have some other business arrangements to tie him up, or could be buried looking for a condo, moving, all kinds of personal reasons as there’s not a really big rush till we’re a little closer to TC.
I'm glad we had this talk. -- TJ Johnson

i guess
It’s just wierd since everyone except him has signed. I can’t help but wonder if it’s a performance issue. Is Denver thinking he could be cut if he doesn’t beat out Hoch or something?

Doubtful...
It is a little atypical, but not a big deal. At this point, cutting or not signing a 6th round pick would be VERY odd. After camp would be the usual move. Besides, I don’t think the amount of money for a 6th rounder really concerns the team. The money for Elvis on the other hand, does…

He can't even come to training camp unless he's under contract
It would be odd for a 6th rounder not to be signed before TC, I think. But I’m not sure the order of signings matters much.

Definitely only kidding you, my friend! A this time of year, all we have are rumors and theories!

I don't know if his Agency could have a lot of clients to sign
But I do know that

Eric Olsen is represented by Athletes First

You rarely if ever see holdouts beyond the 1st round so order of signing 2nd thru 7th round picks is rather meaningless.
I'm rooting for Team USA at the World Cup!
I'll believe your word
I don’t know much about the order of draft signings and all that so I’m sure it’s nothing, but it still seems odd to me.

IMO
Waldon is in line to start, while Olsen is most likely going to be a backup. I agree with getting him done first, and if I had to gues Beadles, another starter, is next
If you look at the other signings
J.D. Walton has the people who are right after him already signed which really helps the slotting. Eric Olsen doesn’t have anyone around him signed which slows things down.

BINGO!!!!
The slotting issue came up again recently regarding the “logjam” that started last year with Crabtree’s holdout. Logjam is a somewhat poor metaphor (but I like it) since the situation is analogous to the opposite of a logjam. Not having an already signed player to use to slot your salary creates uncertainty over price. Agents will then wait for other signings before they proceed with negotiations.
BTW — 6th round picks such as Eric Olsen are relatively confined in what they can ask for, although a small difference between offered price and asked price can still delay reaching an agreement. The fact that Olsen hasn’t signed yet is not an issue given the nature of his bargaining position. No 6th rounder holds out.
no goats, no glory.
Man how did you guys get both of them.

This bodes well for signing Deck as well..
Walton is looking like an awesome catch.. and a worthy second prize for the people hoping for iupati.. who incidentally isn’t even going to play center this year.
Walton is on track to start if he keeps up his form and continues to make calls at the line.. Could be a good success story and having the experienced duo of Kuper and Harris on his right side should definitely help him learn and grow into his role.

Walton pretty much took all of the 1st team reps at center so he could make an impact this year which would be awesome
Hopefully Beadles can also win the competitions in TC and start for us at guard. This is great news. I hope Decker gets signed soon as well. Let’s get these draft picks signed so we can focus on a contract for Dumervil. He should be priority one after getting the draft picks worked out.
Last word was that Gary (Elvis agent) is still looking for $40 million guaranteed.
Not going to happen. More like 6 years with $30 guaranteed.
Wait --
Is that true? I’m ecstatic if Walton even took a slim majority of the 1st team snaps. I know it’s just OTAs, but that’s great! Hell, I’d be happy if he just took slightly more than the other competition at this point in the off-season.

McD also called him out as doing well
Apparently, he likes to lift his head for a minute and make sure that everyone is right before he touches the ball. He considers himself responsible, and you’ve got to like that.
All the young guys were quoted as saying that they planned to learn all positions to they’d always know what was happening. I like these guys. Great attitudes.

Thanks for getting this info out there KB
It’s an interesting set of transactions.
What’s up with bringing in RBs who end up unable to perform (09 – Arrington, 10 – Eckel)?
We live in an age when instant gratification isn't fast enough
No cost to us here. Always worth a look.
With Arrington, the good will generated with him may yet pay huge dividends.
I read in the CS Gazette
that JJ’s knee is around 85% with 3 months til opening day. I hope he doesn;t need the PUP List.

Add this onto the post if ya want KB..
The Denver Broncos signed third-round center J.D. Walton to a $2.58 million contract and waived rookie defensive lineman Jaron Baston and fullback Kyle Eckel.
Walton received a four-year deal with the standard base salaries of $320,000, $405,000, $490,000 and $575,000 as well as a signing bonus of $798,500, according to a league source.
The total base value of the deal can be boosted by a fourth-year escalator clause.
Eckel was waived with an injury designation. If he clears waivers, he could go to their reserve-injured list.
Walton was a finalist for the Rimington Trophy as the nation’s best center and earned first-team All-America status as a senior, becoming the first Baylor offensive or defensive player to do so in 18 years.
A three-year starter at center for the Bears, he allowed just three sacks in 721 pass plays during his final two seasons.

dang
I didn’t even know Kyle Eckel was on the team – wasn’t on the latest roster list that I had seen.
one extra spot right now
4 rookies still to sign…
There is still a lot of pressure on the OLB and RB positions from extra bodies, and to a lesser extent the WRs.
It looks like DL depth will allow us to take a numbers hit there in order to make sure we get the best competition possible at OLB in camp, which is a good indication of how important it is for us to ramp up our pass rush from last season.
By position alone, Garland, Alexander and Davis are under the most pressure in terms of the next few weeks, but there isn’t much they can do about it now. Maybe a fruit basket for the coach.
Why do I feel like a surprise cut is coming up???

If it comes
I would expect a Stokley cut much later in the process. Arnett, Honeycutt, Williams and Lyons are all more likely to go before Stokes.
What I find interesting is the Baston cut. Not sure what kind of DL depth they expect to take into the season, but 7 is standard on the 53, and we only have 9 right now, which makes it sound like McX are already pretty confident in their DL groupings. They are overstocked at LB, which indicates uncertainty, and understocked at DB, to again indicate a fair amount of confidence…
Looking at the roster I don’t see any indications of a surprise cut, it is just a feeling I have. Which is what makes it a surprise, I guess. :)

Weren't there reports of Alexander getting reps with the first team recently?
Not at all suggesting he has a chance at starting this season, but I would think he is ahead of a few others at the position (i.e. Atkins, Davis and Kirlew).
I would
be fine with substituting Atkins for Alexander in my comment, whilst pointing out that Atkins has been in the playbook longer, but Alexander has gotten more recent kudos. I think Kirlew is still ahead of the others, however, despite not headlining recently. I would put his stock in the “holding” category, with Alexander in the “rising”.

All I can say is
The NFL and PA need to get a rookie salary cap. Waldon’s a 3rd rounder and its being reported hes getting a 2.5 + mil deal. Way too much for a guy in his draft slot, at his position, and never playing an NFL snap before
really?
that’s 500k a year.. for such a high risk career i don’t see that being way too much. Especially if he starts for us this year, and for the next five at least.
I agree that they need to fix it, but really only the first round contracts are way too much, and most of that is the top half of the first round guys.
They automaticaly get $1.750 million for the four years...
so just add his $795k bonus and you have the $2.5 million. Not hard to figure.
plus hes gonna start
so if the 2.5 is garunteed, expect that money to go up. I know there’s no cap this year, but still we arent exactly the wealthiest franchise, so the less money we spend on rookies the better
for comparison this is a center from last years draft who was taken at 77..
77. Houston – OC, Antoine Caldwell, Alabama – Signed (4-years, $2.554M; $804,250 signing bonus)
yeah I dont know where the 2.5 is a huge contract came from?
4yr 2.5 aint bad at all! Even a 2 yr 2.5 mil wouldnt be that bad a contract but I think we got a good deal!
not everyone can be switched to RE from C like in Madden what was it 05?
that was how to bank it out there! Switch your OL to DL and sign em for 5yrs 500k and no bonus!
Davis and Sharpe to the Hall!

Im not comparing it to other years
Im just saying its too much money, for a 3rd rounder. Im not comparing it to prior years, as I think those are too much as well. It should be more like the NBA. We’ll pay you the money when you begin to perform
DB...you do understand that ALL drafted players get..
$330k first year, $402k second, $495k third and $550k fourth. It should add to $1.75 million. The bonus money is the only thing that changes. 3rd round with quarter million bonus, thats about right.
Heck yes dude
Move the best corner in the league to punter, wait for him to get cut, sign him to a 7 year 2 million dollar contract and move him back to corner

I dunno
People should add up how much gross salary they have made in their lives so far. The results might astound you. NFL players have high risk careers and a short shelf life, and often times little to no earning power later. I’m even in support of Chris Johnson (RB) holding out.
It’d be another matter if the damn league (and players’ association) did a LOT more for players pensions and health benefits. But in the meantime, I say give them a lot of money if they’re starters and hope they invest it wisely.
I gave up on the 1st Million
Because I heard it’s easier to make the 2nd one.

This is the best news...Totally the most important player for the Broncos.
If he is who EVERYONE thinks he is, then the OL is set for a long time.
Yes I believe Beadles will take over the LG spot no matter who is on the roster.
Beadles will start
Although not 100% sure it will be at LG. I hope Clady comes back, but if hes gone for a while I think they’ll slide Harris to LT and move Beadles to RT
I agree with that thought!
You, my friend, are proof you dont need to have big floppy feet and a red nose to be a clown!
+1
I’d hate to have Clady miss the opener, but I’d hate to have him playing at less than say 85% even worse. And I think you have the backups right — Harris at LT and Beadles at RT. Problem is, who is the backup then? Yikes!
by BroncosBassist on Jun 17, 2010 6:35 PM MDT up reply actions
My guess is since Polumbus is a natural LT he will start there.
I would not weaken the line with Harris at LT, Olsen at LG, Walton, Kuper, and Beadles at RT.
TOO many changes.
BTW, Clady will be ready before TC is over. Trust in fate.
Why the Broncos drafted Beatles
is clearer than ever before. The guy can basically play every positon on the line, and other linemen such as Vladimir Ducasse, Jon Asamoah, John Jerry, and Mike Johnson are not as flexible.
Great pick up for us!!!!
Very good point!
