Bronco defense rated
Most of us do look through Orange & Blue colored glasses when we post about OUR Broncos. I too am the glass-half-full Bronco fan. While waiting for TC most of us scourer the web for Bronco tid bits.
Here is some information for discussion from my projected depth chart. How good are our defensive players? Here are some ratings from the Fantasy Football world.
LDE – Ryan McBean - Adequate starter
- Le Kevin Smith - Average rotation lineman
NT – Jamal Williams - Pro Bowl defensive tackle
- Ronald Fields - Adequate starting nose tackle
- Chris Baker – Average Backup
RDE – Justin Bannan - Useful starter
- Jarvis Green - Decent role player
- Marcus Thomas – Average Backup
LOLB – Robert Ayers - Decent starter
- Darrell Reid - Decent situational linebacker
LILB – Mario Haggan - Excellent backup with some starter tools
- Wesley Woodyard - Adequate reserve linebacker / fill-in starter
RILB – DJ Williams - Excellent starter
- Akin Ayodele - Solid starting linebacker
ROLB – Elvis Dumervil - Pro Bowl pass rusher, solid starter
- Jarvis Moss - Situational linebacker
LCB – Andre Goodman - Adequate starter
- Parrish Cox - Good return specialist / nickel back with upside
RCB – Champ Bailey – Perennial Pro Bowler
- Alphonso Smith - Adequate backup corner
- Nate Jones - Solid nickel back / special teamer
SS – Renaldo Hill - Adequate starter
- Darcel McBath - Starting safety
FS – Brian Dawkins - Hall of Famer
- David Bruton - Adequate starter
- Josh Barrett - Solid rotational safety
Now I can see why most pundits rate Denver's defense in the top 10.

Click the players' names, on the right side of that page you'll find the scouting report, from SBNation/Fantasy Sports Services.

If the Chemistry is there?
DLMyers interesting post…like me you can’t wait till TC.
All these suppose experts and fantasy ratings are all subjective analysis’. Anyway if you add in Camaradrie & Chemistry our new Defense could compare to maybe the Orange Crush. I think this entire season will be hinge on the Defense keeping our team in the game and hopefully the Offense can score enough TD’s this year and win the battle of the POT…

Totally agree about the chimistry...
Which is why I disagree with Hill’s (for example) “rating”. On his own he may very well be merely adequate, but his communication skills and rapport with the rest of the defensive backfield, especially with Dawkins, makes him an integral part of an already stellar group of players.
This is an aspect that doesn’t show up with your tackling ability and 40-times, and gets lost amidst your tackle numbers, etc. IMO, if you have a player like McBath nipping at your tail, and the team is still worse off if you’re not on the field, it should say enough about how valuable you are to the team – regardless of rankings and statistics.

If Dawkins is a Hall of Famer surely Champ is as well

Did they use any explanation for their terms?
What is an adequate starter vs a decent vs a useful or an average starter? Lots of terms being tossed around, but even keeping in mind that this is a Fantasy Football publication it would help to know what they mean by them.
According to this, David Bruton is an adequate starter, apparently. He didn’t start much last year, but did excellent special teams work. Does that make him a starter? If so, how do you measure his contribution? Akin Ayodele led the league in missed tackles last year with 17, according to FO (I believe). He’s also very weak in coverage, but somehow this makes him a solid starting linebacker. You could go on with this, but the point is simple – I have no idea what they think that their terms mean. I have to wonder – do they?

????
Alphonso Smith is an adequate starter???? Says who? I am seriously cheering for the guy, but you can’t call him adequate yet given his body of work so far. The kid needs to seriously bring it this year or get out.

It says
Adequate backup corner for Alphonso Smith, or at least it does now. It may have been changed after you posted.

Here's a link with the rookie ratings
The Broncos and the Chiefs ratings are low, man we get no respect in that game at all. Wait until you see T.Tebow rating. http://www.maddenfans.com/madden-11/madden-11-rookie-ratings/#comment-3976
That's what you get when the head honcho is a Raiders fan. :p

thanks for the post, but how can they rate Chris Baker? He hasn't shown anything we can rate because he hasn't been on the field. How can they?
I’m with Doc above.
It’s an interesting read, but it sort of reminds me of the tv show, The Office when Michael has Pam taking notes and writing down how Micheal is grading his employees for a contest he’s holding. At one point, he asks her who’s ahead. She replies something like, Dwight’s got two gold stars, you gave Jim a B+, three check marks to Andy and a smiley face for Angela. Naturally Michael asks her to check to see if he gave her a conversion chart.
I think we could all use one of those. Interesting, though and thanks for the post!
It's Alex, just Alex. But you can call me Alex=)

I hope
We’ll see the type of D we saw in the first six games, throughout the regular and entire post-season.
I’m still baffled at how We allow 66 points in the first six, then the last ten we allow 258… I keep seeing more reasons to believe Our D this season will mirror the D from last season’s first six, as opposed to the last 10 (well, they can look like they did against NY on Thanksgiving and at Arrowhead in Dec. too). I won’t be surprised in the least if Our D ranks top five come the end of the season.
That's quite a long handle there, G Funk. - That's what she said.

Who wouldn't want their "D" to play that well for the entire season.
I think part of it was the opposing team figuring out your offense after watching 6 games more than anything.
More like
guys fired up and playing over their heads early in the season, then getting discouraged and tentative later on. But a big part of that was also them wearing down due to lack of depth. Even if Williams, Bannen and Green weren’t an upgrade, which I think they are, the fact that last year’s starters will be this year’s backups suggests how much more depth we have on the D-line. Another thing is it’s hard to maintain a fever pitch for an entire game or season. Eventually, you come down. Winning coaches learn to pace their teams, which means controlling their emotional state, so they’re not already burned out in the stretch run.
"Surprised to see you, Captain, though pleased." — from Star Trek episode Space Seed.
Boil it down...
There’s a whole lot of adequate, decent and average on that defense… you need more than that in order to be great, hopefully they figure it out.

And yet last year that same defense was great until lack of depth killed it.

Wow to you these ratings are valid?
Note that BDawk is a “Hall of Famer” while Champ is only a “Perennial Pro-bowler”. Then go read Champ’s “flaws” section…
“Will gamble and guess wrong at times. Could participate more in run support. A solid but not great tackler. Isn’t as physical as he should at the line.”
This, about the best tackling corner of the decade, who at times has been uncomfortably involved in our run support. I read that and realized that the guys up at SBN don’t spend much time out West.

maybe it is opposite day
as in, the opposite of each of those statements would be an accurate scouting report on champ.
I guess they figure nobody is paying attention to champ anymore. Meanwhile, if we don’t extend him, he is going into a contract year…
