We used the chalkboard and the TV tape of the Packers-Steelers matchup from last season when Green Bay QB Aaron Rodgers hit WR Greg Jennings for an 83-yard TD pass.

Spread offense has ability to help teams in pass protection
During a recent sit-down with two NFL offensive line coaches, I was taken by surprise. What caught my attention is the apparent shift in philosophy when it comes to using the spread formation to protect the quarterback in passing situations.

I am so stoked about the London game
Every time I think about it, I get a big goofy smile across my face :)
Booked my hotel, which isn’t too far away from The Oval.
Kirwan's article on spread pass protection was interesting
He misses the obvious on pressure tendancies, seemingly acting surprised that teams blitzed more when the opponent is in the red zone… my answer is “well duh. They have less ground to cover with the short field, so they don’t have to leave the safeties deep to protect against the big play… which leaves more people to clog the shorter passing lanes and/or rush the passer”.
He seems to think its all about trying to push folks out of field goal range, missing the obvious point about geographical context… anyway, a good read, especially given how much we’re likely to use the spread…. Thanx John!
The spread being effective in the RZ....
and we have TT…..
I like it. I like it A L O T.
One of my friends is so dead set that the spread will never work in the NFL, and for that reason, Tebow will suck. Needless to say, I told him to do some homework before writing off a guy of his talent/character. I then bet him that Tebow would have a winning record in 2 years…I feel pretty safe in that bet. :)

Has he watched any football lately
Almost every team in the NFL uses the spread at least part of the time. Both Indy and NO make extensive use of the spread and it was on full display in the SB.
Saying the spread will never work in the NFL is a bit like saying the 2pt conversion will never catch on.

Still waiting on the 2pt conversion thing
I am a bear of very little brains and big words bother me.
Yep, plus I think catching on is when it's used more
Teams only used it 53 times, the third lowest in the last dozen years. So if there were 1131 touchdowns last season, and only 53 2 point conversions, that’s a rate of .046 or less then 5 percent. I think catching on is when coaches use it more then that. A onside kick was used in the Super Bowl as well, but that is also something that isn’t used often, and believe me, I looked at all the stats sites, and it’s hard to justify doing it often. Things like 2 point conversions have their place, but they are not “catching on” in the sense that they will be used often.

by that standard it will never 'catch on.'
2 vs 1 is a strategy call, with a significant reduction in probability from 1 to 2. ~5% doesn’t sound too far off in terms of likelihood of scoring, especially for some offenses.
A better standard for ‘catching on’ would be the timing of calls, in relation to the season. It is one thing for one of the elite teams in the league, i.e. a leader of the field, to attempt it in the most important game of the year when there is nothing left to lose, it is another thing entirely when a team that struggles to keep pace with the pack attempts one early in a season when they still have their whole year to be decided (assuming they use it strategically, and not off-the-cuff, or ignorantly).
As a strategy decision, it should be regarded as a measure of tolerance, which is the gulf that separates the two teams I describe above. When the 2 point conversion bridges that gap, I would say it has ‘caught on.’
My guess is that it has, and that every team has defined for themselves, strategically when the best time is to attempt a 2pt conversion to help their odds of winning the game.

Thanks John
Someone should tell headline writers and commercial jingle writers that the song “London Calling” is about a nuclear apocalypse.
Are you saying you don't think the Broncos will
annihilate the niners??
I thought that was the point….
